5 comments about DEWALT DW257 Heavy-Duty 6.2 Amp Deck/Drywall Screwdriver.
  1. I originally purchased the latest Type 3 version of the Dewalt DW257 VSR deck/drywall screwdriver primarily to fasten 1/4" and 1/2" concrete backerboard underlayment to plywood subflooring for tile work. It drives 1-1/4" and 1-5/8" backerboard screws flush to the surface quickly and easily with almost no effort. The DW257 is very well balanced and light weight, has a comfortable pistol grip and trigger position that make it easy to work with all day long. I like the large variable speed reversing trigger switch and the trigger lock location because it makes it virtually impossible to unintentionally lock the trigger in the on position while using the tool. The 6.2 amp motor is smooth and powerful and because it turns at only 2500 RPM's, it is very quite. I have used the DW257 to easily drive 3-1/2" and 4" deck screws flush to the surface of 2X PT lumber and yet, it can also be adjusted to flush set screws in 1/2" drywall and greenboard with no paper tear through. This makes for a very versatile tool that can handle a wide range of fastening tasks that a 4000 RPM drywall only screwdriver can't. When considering it's modest cost, the DW257 offers better value and performance than many of it competitors more expensive models.
The depth sensitive control is easy to adjust and once set, stays put. The metal tipped adjustment collar locks securely to the clutch housing and has never accidentally popped off while using the tool. The clutch operates smoothly and works the way it should.
Overall, I would recommend the DW257 to individuals who needs a powerful, well balanced combination deck/drywall screwdriver that is easy on the wrist and comfortable enough to work with all day.

  2. I purchased the DW257 about a month ago and layed the boots to it immediatley. I intalled a new sub-floor on the already existing 3/4 inch floor. I used 3" floor screws to go into the house floor joists. Worked beautifully, the screws zipped right in. The depth adjuster worked great.

I have alot of drywalling to do as well. I have been using it for the drywall that I am now doing (waited to write this review untill I used it on drywall). Again, the screws zip right in, the depth adjustedment makes this tool dummy proof.

I have read a couple of the reviews above. You certainly have to learn how to hold and balance the tool in your hand for clean fastening (like any other tool). Once you do that... this tool is it!!

  3. I went out and got this for a deck I was putting up. After owning the DeWalt DW 257 for 24 hours and using it to screw down 5/8 pressure treated deck boards to 2X12 joists the thing wrung itself completely in half. Immagine the look on the clerks face when I returned the gear/ clutch assembly in one hand and the body in the other. Needless to say I got a refund and bought something else. While I love my DeWalt framing nailer and a DeWalt/ Emglo compressor I'm now leary of buying yellow....

  4. rather get the DW272. I don't know if it was an isolated instance, but I couldn't keep the nose assembly tight. I believe the threads were stripped, and it wouldn't stay tight.

The DW272 has not had the same problem. When I purchased it, my instinct said "plastic isn't durable and it looks like it could be weak at the nose", and well in this case it proved to be true.

I certianly wouldn't rate the DeWalt tools based on the quality of this drill/driver...they make better products, I own many...and will continue to buy them.

  5. Bought the DeWalt as an "extra" to help speed up some home decking projects.

This unit has more power than my old, more sturdy Milwaukee, but is probably worse at keeping a consistent depth. You do, of course, get the hang of it and you can work "by feel" to get pretty good results if you just take the adjustable collar off the gun for important flush work.

A bigger problem is that the magnetic bit holder seems too weak for the work. The bit gets twisted into the holder and you can't get it out. When that happens, you just have to buy a $5.00 replacement holder and go on.

I would think this was a problem with the bits themselves, but it has never happened with the other gun and it occurs with or without the depth collar in use and working with the same materials on the same projects.

Perhaps it has something to do with the tolerances being to tight for the DeWalt holder? Whatever the cause, it's the time-consuming trips back to the store for the parts that are the real killer in using the DeWalt.

5 comments about Milwaukee 6791-21 Remodelers Kit 6.5 Amp Screwdriver with Assessory Package.
  1. I have been doing a lot of drywalling recently while remodeling my home. For a while I tried to get by using a normal drill to do the screws (nailing drywall is a ridiculous pain). The problem was that I had a terrible time setting the screws to the right depth. I was using a couple of those special drill bits that advertise the ability to help set drywall screws. I learned my lesson. One big problem was I had to use different thicknesses of drywall with different applications.

Then I bought this beauty... Let me say this: If you are drywalling or planning to drywall soon stop reading this review and buy this now! Drywall went from being a necessary pain to being actually a bit fun. First off the screw gun's ability to set screw depth acurately to within 1 /64 of an inch is awesome. A little click to the right or left with the nozzle and you're ready to rock. Next, 6.5 amps of power... wooowww! This thing has the torque and speed to easily power drywall screws through my century old wood framing. My normal drill choked often on this. Thirdly, magnetic tip. You don't realize how nice this is until you are putting up drywall panels on a 10 foot ceiling. You can one hand those screws all over the place within reach of your ladder. Just don't let it make you so lazy you start tipping over your ladder in an attempt to reach that one last place just barely out of reach... Fourthly, rugged steel case. Fifthly, the ability to drive basically any screw anywhere, wood or metal, with all the included bits and attachments. Sixthly, it's Milwaukee. That means built to take whatever you can dish out and a lifetime waranty.

    Don't drywall without it!

  2. Look no farther, this is the gun to buy. I bought this screw gun almost a year ago when I was going to have to drive a LOT of screw. I built 4 large decks this summer and it has saved me time beyond belief. The gun has enough torque to drive 3 inch screws through 2x cedar into pressure treated wood with no problem. The auto depth stop works flawlessly, and I can drive screws 40-50% faster than with a cordless drill. I also recently used it to put down a metal roof and it works great for that too. Before buying this model I had the opportunity to use a Dewalt gun (the kind they carry at the big home stores) and it's no comparison, this one wins hands down. More comfortable to hold and use and has more power for driving the screws.

  3. My dad uses this when he goes roofing, and he says that this is great! I've watched him use our old screw gun and new un reduces the rate or time used on the same job by half! Also good for getting the dog off the couch if you don't use any screws.

  4. This is my first drywall screwdriver, and I researched alot of them before I chose the Milwaukee. In the end, it came down to Milwaukee's name, this driver having a hard nose (as opposed to soft plastic) and the torque of an electric tool. I've used it for a couple weeks now and don't know how I managed to hang drywall without it. After taking a few drives to set the depth, I haven't broken the paper once, haven't snapped the head off one screw, and have hung full sheets of drywall by myself without using nails. Now my only concern has been missing the stud.

Now the cons: I have big hands and cannot get the trigger lock engaged with the hand holding the grip. The only way I can get the trigger lock pushed in far enough is to use a finger on my "free" hand. If you have to angle the gun to get screws in tight corners sometimes requires a hand screwdriver to finish them after the gun has driven them as far as it can. And of course since it is electric there's an extension cord that follows you around.

I may consider purchasing a cordless screwdriver in the future to elminate the cords, but this tool is going to be in my arsenal for as long as I'm working.

  5. Other reviewers have already said how good this tool is. Easy to use, light, balanced, powerful and Milwaukee smooth. They make such good motors for screwdrivers and drills. This gun is a pleasure to use for hours on end.

On Amazon's page, they suggest you add a steel carry case. THIS KIT COMES WITH THAT STEEL CARRY CASE. NO NEED TO ORDER ANOTHER ONE. Just order this kit and you'll have it covered.

  1. This is the model to use for driving seldrilling screws through many layers of sheet metal. I bought to drive #14 and #12 screws to assemble my metal building. The versa clutch is a must. Works great where other models weren't fast enough or didn't have the adjustable torque.

  1. makita has produced a very comfortable gun to use.I have found it to be quite well ballanced especially when set in the lock on position, so that the trigger finger is on the upper part of the gun. the only draw back is that you have to remove the tip to remove screws. we will have to see how it holds up to the test of time.

  2. This tool is the greatest. I've been useing screwguns for 20 years and none can compare to this one. They say the clip breaks, none of mine out of 4 screwguns has. Maybe if some people didn't drop it on the ground the clip woulden't break. It will back out screws in reverse if you push to the side A little when you apply pressure. The speed of this screwgun has allowed me to hang approx 15 more 12' sheets per 8 hour day. It pays for itself very quickly at that rate. This product is the best ever made.

  3. This tool is a real powerhouse screwgun. I've only been through aboout 15 pounds of screws so far. However, when driving #10-3's into framing lumber or when drivine 1-1/4" 'rock screws, this tool is perfectly happy. The speed takes a little technique to handle, but when it comes, you realize just how much more effecient you become when building. The nose-cap is designed to pop-off for removing screws. I've found this to be very helpful in the unusual case that I have to un-do something. The tool is very durable and it works circles around any battery powered tool. Also, it's lighter than most screwguns so you can handle it all day without problem.

  4. I never thought I'd say this, but maybe it has TOO MUCH power for the task? Nahhhhhhhhhhh. It will tear the heads off screws like they're plastic if longer than 1 5/8ths. I used some 3" for something and it kept ripping the heads off if I went full throttle with it. As for the clip, yeah, it stinks. Plastic belt clips are a ridiculous idea. They should be metal, plain and simple. Save the plastic for the B&D tools. Workaround: Get a holster. As for the tips getting chewed up. Yes, if you use standard #2 tips made for a regular screw gun, it will eat them alive! You would need the hardened ones like the Dewalt DW2402. Personally I use the regular ones, and they last me on 1 5/8ths coarse threads. You can get a 25 pack of dewalts for 8 bucks. Bottom line, I like it. If you frequently kill tips when you work, dont get this gun. Your style of work will not mesh well, the gun is too powerful. If tips usually last you pretty long, this is the gun for you.

  5. tool is very powerful, not for the first time user. as in the past, very pleased with Makita product.

  1. This product is very well made. Its construction is clearly heavy duty not like some of the other brands that I bought and returned. Drives the screws perfectly every time -- plenty of reserve power. All of the adjustments are on the tool and thus do not require external tools.

  2. I was laying over 3000 sq ft of hardibacker. It seemed a perfect job for an autofeed screwdriver. I bought a SENCO because my local store was out of the Makita. The SENCO couldn't sink the screws through the Hardibacker. I went to the local rental shop and got a professional version of the SENCO. It was better, but I still had to finish off setting every screw. Finally, I found this Makita. It handled the job perfectly.

  3. This gun works much better than the Senco guns I have, although I don't like the cord. Easy to change the depth, or size of the screw, tool-free. I have had the same problem as others, a lot of the Senco screws do not work with this gun, but the Pam fasteners work better than Makita collated screws.

  1. The Milwaukee drywall screwdriver is a priceless tool if you've got a job bigger than 1 sheet. The depth settings are convienient and have good granularity of adjustment. You may have to try a couple of brands of bits however. I've found that the bits with ridges on the blade faces work best. They allow you to be slightly off 90 degress (perp. to the wall surface) without camming out. The rubber finger grips on the top of the Milwaukee make it comfortable to handle. It's well balanced and powerful. It takes a few practice screws to get the hang of it but it's by all means worth the (money). You'll use it every chance you get!

  2. This is a plain, bare bones screw gun for drywall installation.

It has a soft start feature that helps the motor last longer since some people rather pull the trigger for every screw they shoot.
People who do tons of drywall just lock the trigger and keep driving one screw after the other.

It's designed to shoot screws in all day. Nothing fancy, no clutch, just a depth stop.

I actually use my clutched cordless drill for most drilling and general screwing. I only break this out for drywall. It has the advantage of being lighter weight with pretty decent balance.

If you're going to screw into something that's maybe questionable in strength might benefit from a clutched drill or a clutched screw gun or just going slow with this. These screw guns are really fast and since they're foremost intent is screwing into wood or steel studs having that type of adjustability really isn't required.

This is about the least expensive, no frills way to go for a screwgun and a brand that's been making these for a very long time. It's a good dedicated drywall screw gun.

For decks I might use a clutched gun or just one of the slower rpm screw guns that are geared for more torque to drive longer, fatter screws.

  3. Once again, Milwaukee delivers a quality tool. This gun is a vast improvement over their older, less balanced screw guns. It fits the hand well, is not overly heavy, and runs screws into either wood or metal studs without hesitation. The only complaint I have about this one versus the older models is the trigger lock. It's now a recessed button, which is very awkward to operate with one hand. But even the DeWalt's isn't that convenient, so this is my screw gun of choice. Plus, it has a 5 year limited warranty, which none of the competition can touch.

  4. I bought this tool after checking out all the other brands. I really like that it is very light weight and comfortable to hold. This model is not all plastic like some of the other brands.

  5. A must for anyone who is serious about "flying rock". After a short learning curve and not hesitating to move fast you can screw off a whole sheet of dry wall in one to two minutes. My only criticism is that it is difficult if not impossible to engage the trigger lock with one hand.

  1. Several years ago I retired my corded Makita drywall gun which I had used for years and bought the DeWalt DW272. This gun is fast and reliable! The 'dial-up' depth setting is simplicity itself and never faulters. The gun is light; powerful; well balanced; and rugged. For the average homeowner's drywall needs, this gun is all that he/she needs.

I recently purchased the DeWalt DC520 18v drywall gun (which can be very pricey), because I hate dragging around a cord. But for the overhead work I still grab the DW272! This is a fabulous screw gun for the money! If you are in the market for a corded drywall gun, get it, you won't be sorry.

  2. Dewalt is good but why does Amazon have to bait us and mislead by its claim of a higher retail price of 189.00. It sells everywhere at no more than 99.00

  3. I am a remodeler. I am not committed to any brand of tools, Some brands do better on one tool, and some do better on another. Overall Milwaukee is the brand I use the most, but a drywall screwgun I went with DeWalt. I have no complaints with this gun. It is fast, powerful, light, and has easy depth adjustment. I have been using it for the last year+ and havent had any problems with it.
If you have drywall to do, and you dont have a drywall gun you are wasting time. It is worth the money.

  4. As stated elsewhere, if you don't need 130 lbs of torque, and most of us dont, this is a great gun. Two things worth mentioning though:
    1) Throw away the manual immediately, it is less than worthless. It will only serve to confuse you and upset you to the point of frustration. Why most manuals are so poorly written I will never know. I guess they figure at the point where you're reading the manual, they've already got your money! Bench Dog is a shining example of the opposite BTW. Their manuals are clear, concise, thorough, I can't say enough about them.
    2) DO NOT use bits with a cut by the bottom of the bit. These are the longer bits, maybe 2 inches long, sometimes 2 sided? they will stick in the gun, you will have to take it apart and send away to Dewalt for a new bit holder.
Use only 1 inch long flat sided bits, they are held magnetically, you don't need the extra grab that the other bits give.
Still a five star rating for the tool itself, just these caveats.

  5. This appears to be a v. good driver, except the manual is very poorly written and the illustration insufficiently informative. In addition, the plastic sleeve that adjusts the depth of the screw was so tightly screwed on that I has to mount the driver in my vise and use a wrench to unscrew it. Once this was accomplished the driver works as expected. The manual would not even be required, except the overly foreceful assembly as indicated above made me doubt if I understand the function of the parts.

  1. What a wonderful tool! Hung a new ceiling with this tool and a jack by myself - much easier to have the screw gun loaded and ready to go when your other hand is holding the drywall up.
Also speeds up the hanging process ten-fold. You can easily hang a 4X8 sheet in under a minute - I'd never come close to that with my old drywall screw gun.
I was looking at a new makita gun for $79, and for the extra $20 it was well worth having the autofeed.
I would recommend this tool to anyone doing decking, drywall, strapping, etc. work.

  2. I have owned this tool for over a year now and have driven at least 1000 screws with it with ZERO problems. I am an avid DIY'er and am remodeling our house and when it comes time to hang drywall, this tool is an asset! The depth control works very well and just sinks the screws below the surface of the drywall and the head of the plunger leaves just the right dimple to fill with compound. I have used this tool while remodeling 3 rooms of our home and for installing sheets of drywall in a garage addition and all I can say is I LOVE THIS TOOL! If you are going to be installing drywall and are considering this product to speed things up, GO FOR IT! you won't be dissapointed! I have not tried this product for screws longer than 1-1/4 but if I need to build a quick frame for something, I doubt i'll be dissapointed.
