  1. Poor execution of a good idea. The nut used to tighten this in the desired position simply doesn't work. It's very easy for the setting to change as you're using it. So what good is it if it won't stay where you set it? Not much, I say.

  2. Works good, what little that I have used it. Had a little trouble getting the right setup, but after expermiting a little it worked good.

  3. I have been pleased with the workmanship and functionality of my "scribe" which I've used mainly as a compass. I like the fact that the device locks in whatever position I want. There are a number of features that I haven't explored. There is a built-in sharpener, and I figure if I need to do a really large circle I can just put in a long pencil instead of the stub that it comes with.

I keep it handy in my shop. A good value.

  4. Great idea and well built. I first saw it in a wooden boat magazine and thought it looked good. As a wood worker, drawing circles is a common problem. I've used it a couple times and have these observations:
    1. It holds it's position and measurement quite well.
    2. It is constructed of good materials.
    3. The pin pulls back for safe stage, but doesn't stay in the extended position without the help of a little electrical tape.
    4. I think it would be nice if the pin side would also swivel to allow larger circles.
Would I recommend it? Yes, but the builder could improve their design a bit.

  5. The joint makes it easy to work with. The only thing I would like to see changed is the pencil holder. I would like to be able to use a mechanical pencil or pen. The pencil provided (standard #2 pencil) is the only style that will fit. I'd buy it again.

  1. It does just what it is designed for - assists in laying out measurements for molding and trim. It is fairly easy to use, once you get the hang of it. The directions are somewhat vague, so it took a bit of practice to determine the best way to mark the cut lines on molding. Otherwise a real handy product that easily fits in your tool belt.

  2. I bought 1 because I was going to be installing new trim on all the doors in my house, and then got a second from my wife for christmas. It was actually a good thing. I have the first one nailed down on a lond piece of 8" wide Pine which I use to measure the length of the cut that I need. The second one I carry around with me and use to mark the door jam for measuring, and then to line up the trim for install. I reccomend using a nail gun instead of a hammer because I found you need a third hand when trying to use the hammer and the tool.

All my reveals were perfect, and the miter cuts were right on.

The main diffrence between the metal and plastic is that the metal tool is 1/4" reveal and the plastic is 3/16" reveal. I thought 1/4" is a bit much, but the 3/16" looks perfect. For those worried about using a plastic tool, it has held up perfect for this project, and will be fine when I go to replace all the trim when I replace the windows.

This is a great tool, and really sped up the time it took to install the trim.

  3. Use it to do the trim on the inside of a whole house. Cut the time in half. Very few recuts with this.

  4. This is a handy tool that takes a bit of getting used to.

    Pros
You put it to the casement much like a speed square
It automatically gives you a 5/16 reveal
You can drag it along the casement to scribe your line, if you like
Is handy to push molding against to nail
    Grooves for automatic length measurement

    Con
The slots for hooking rule too small for Stanley Fat Max

  5. This might be useful for a DIY newbie, but any pros thinking it's something a tool junkie needs to hang trim- forget it. Just another solution looking for a problem.

  1. The product has satisfied the needs and wants of the person I have given it too. If he could purchase from denali again, he would. I appreciate the quick shipping times, customer service, quality of product, and excellent product pricing.

  2. It needs extention to calculate angles for stairs, this small addition to it will make it more useful

  3. 4 degrees off at 180 degrees,(176.2 laying flat on all surfaces)
    .6 degrees off at 90.0 degrees (89.4 )
    Cheap means cheap.

  4. I bought this to use to install crown molding. So far I have not used it on the job, but from everything I can see, it should do just fine. While I do not have anything to check it out with, it is right on with a square.

  5. Right out of the box it was 4 degrees off and there is no field calibration provisions. I loosened all of the protractor screws and was able to get it within 1 degree. Time will tell if it's any good.

5 comments about Stainless Steel 6" Digital Caliper with Extra-Large LCD Screen - Instant SAE-Metric Conversion.
  1. If you are not in need of precision calibrated measurements, these calipers will do just fine. I have a few sets of calipers and I was in need of a digital set to perform metric exchange in my lab. All of my required measurements are needed in metric and this one does exactly that with the push of a button. It comes with an extra battery which is nice to have, the case is molded to prevent bumping around and it has a slot for the extra battery. I have been very pleased with the performance of this tool.

  2. I am mostly satisfied with this device. It seems to be easily accurate enough to serve my needs, and it is easy to use.

The only reservation I have is that the cover for the battery compartment slides off too easily, often while I'm trying to make a meaurement. And the spare battery they send you doesn't stay put in the little indentation in the foam in the case, so every time you open the case the battery is floating around somewhere.

  3. Shipped on time, delivered on time, and no problems. What more could you ask for?

  4. I bought this caliper after someone on a fishing forum recommended it for measuring the small parts on fishing reels. I have been amazed at the quality but even more so at the fantastic price I paid for it. Went to my local Home Depot and couldn't find anything even remotely close for this price.

  5. It might not be the best caliper on the market, but for the $$, it was well worth it.

  1. This device accurately measures distances (and the laser is a great cat toy, as well!).

As noted in some other reviews, the laser spot is not bright enough to be seen in bright sunlight. Other than that, it's fine.

Accurate. Ergonomic. Comfortable. Nice size. Easy to use.

  2. This equipment is small but you can measure distances up to 30 m (100 ft) with and accurancy of 6 mm (3/8"). Great when your are checking distance during my inspecrions.

  3. Very good product. Cannot beat the price. Use it in construction every day. Very accurate.

  4. This is a really good product. It uses a Leica Geosystems measuring components which are on of the best. It measures on semi-reflective surfaces. The beam will reflect off of very dark color, such as near black gray or brown, but will not work on pure black, such as black cat or a high gloss black computer case. You will get error 255. The laser in the device is straight and is not supposed to be reflected back into the lens. This will blind the optics and cause a 258 error. The surface it is used on does not have to be flat.
    Ttesting:
It will precisely measure a flat white wall, silver colored tv, dark gray cabinet, very dark brown molding, vertical and horizontal steel piping, clock face, semi-translucent plastic cutting sheet leaning on a faucet at a 65 degree angle, white carpet, a milky white metal chair back and people.

It will not properly measure a silverstone black desktop case, black japanese ebony wood table, a black cat laying on a white carpet. These will give a 255 error.

It will give false readings if measuring through a window or a mirror.

The device does add its own length to the measurement, so the device measures from rubber back of the device to wherever the beam hits.

    Invoice cost ~$30-40
I found and bought it for $45.

  5. I am an appraiser and typically wear out 3 to 5 fiberglass tapes a year measuring houses. I had purchased a sonic measuring device which was pathetically unreliable unless you were measuring a short unobstructed inside corner to inside corner. The laser is a huge improvement in that it gives you pinpoint accuracy for measuring point to point, but don't throw your tape away. The laser is great for certain measurments, but not practical for others. the addition/subtraction feature is really handy. Using the tape and laser together priceless. Probably cuts my measuring time down by 30% to 40%.

  1. Easy to use. Very adaptable to a variety of situations. Great with both horizontal and vertical modes or even both at the same time.

  2. This is a very good product for the "do it yourself" folks and will come in handy for many home improvment projects. I used it for installing drop ceiling in our basement and it made the job much easier. The unit is compact and has a flat base which allows it to be placed on pretty much anywhere. I was disappointed that the hanging strap is not included in the package, which would be very useful for drop ceilings etc. I improvised by mounting the wall mount frame on to a piece of 1X6 and then attaching the 1X6 to the joists. This allowed me to use the rack & pinion system to adjust the height accurately. The laser beam is not very powerful. It gets fuzzy at longer distances. Overall, a good value for the price.

  3. I really am trying to love this level.. but I keep trying to use it in these certain situations that make it completely useless. I don't want to poke a bunch of holes in my freshly painted walls (the level lets you poke holes in walls to hang it).. so I am forced to stack it on chairs to get this thing to be of any use. What this thing should be able to do is point the horizontal laser up and down. So that you could have it set on a counter at 5 feet.. and point the horizontal laser up to the opposing wall at 7 feet. Unfortunately.. you can't even try to angle it up as the shielding will block the laser. Very frustrating.. I've found I've just stuck with my good ol' bubble level in 4 out of 5 cases.

Also, the thing is super delicate when on its mounting platform.. any kind of touch will knock it off line and you have to re-finetune the positioning... it's just not that professional of a laser level if you ask me.

  4. This isn't the be-all and end-all of laser levels, but for the price it's a very nice unit. The out-of-level indicator that interrupts the laser beam when the unit is tilted too far to accurately self-level is a great feature which makes hand-holding reasonable for many tasks. This is good because the thing is otherwise a bit difficult to get into perfect position. To cast a horizontal beam, you essentially have to place the level at the exact height you want. There's an elevator adjustment on the mount that goes through a range of about six inches, but you need to get the unit mounted within that range on your own. I tried to use the tripod mount screw hole, but for some reason it doesn't fit with either of the camera tripods I have at home. The positive magnetic engagement with the mounting base is another nice feature. Still, I'm happy with it and would recommend it.

  5. Works great, lines show up great even in sunlit filled room.

Very handy for hanging multiple pictures at the same level.

Only downside is small pinholes left in drywall, but they are very hard to notice.

  1. I am no handyman so I do not know what all can be expected of an item of this nature---but I have not as yet found anything that it doesn't do supremely well. This is a great relief to my wife also because it is easy to work with, yet maintains enough rigidity that I can take a number of measurements by myself rather than call for help.

  2. We run a new steel sales shop. This tape outlasts any other we've tried, even some much more expensive than this model. It's tough, durable design makes it a welcome addition to our tool sets. Gerdau Ameristeel-Fargo

  3. This is the epitome of a construction tape. Solid case, sturdy tape, fast recoil. As a laborer in the brick construction industry, this is a very popular tape measure. It is not fancy, but why would anyone need a fancy tape. It is a solid, good priced tape and it makes me wonder why anyone would buy another more expensive, plastic-cased tape. The buck stops here - the Stanley tape is all anyone needs.

  4. Normal high-quality Stanley workmanship didn't apply to my tape. The first time I extended it to its full 25 feet, the blade literally fell off, the spring motor unwound, and now I'm left with a $12 paperweight. Stanley needs to work on their engineering for this tape to prevent the tape from so easily separating itself from the spring motor. Maybe it wasn't assembled correctly to start? Strange, I haven't encountered this phenomenon with any other steel tape measurer.

  5. I really like the feel of this product - it feels very solid.... I am very happy I bought it.

  1. Nice product. Scuff-free padding is a plus. Lack of markings for inches and centimeters on side adjacent to wall for easy measuring and marking is a minus.

  2. It doesn't matter whether the special features of this level work as advertised or not, if it's not reliable as a level. The first one I bought was dramatically off-level, by about 1/8 inch over the length of the level. (This is easy to check. Place it on a nearly level surface and carefully note the bubble position. Then spin it halfway around, as if it were on a turntable, and carefully check the bubble position again. If the positions are different, the bubble vial is not level.)

I got a replacement, and it was also off-level, though not as much. Its bigger problem was that the bubble was so small, it was nowhere near as wide as the distance between the level marks. This makes it impossible to see accurately whether the bubble is centered or not.

This level appears to be a clever idea very badly executed and without any kind of reliable quality control. What on earth good is a level that isn't level?

  3. This is a great tool for hanging pictures, shelves, towel bars, toilet paper holders just about anything that needs two marking points, you can make the marking points accurate and level every time, The only improvement that the tool needs is some sort of steel pin on the back of the accumark sliding bracket piece to make the marking points on the wall this would work great and you would not even need to reach for a pencil.

  4. This level, for one, arrived damaged. For two, it was not level. I placed it on a surface and it showed it was not level. Fine. I then turned the level around and it showed that it was not level in the other direction. While the "Accu Marks" are a good idea, it needs to be paired with a better quality level. Needless to say, it was packed up and shipped back to Amazon.

  5. This product is excellent for hanging things at home. I got tired of marking up all of my walls when my other levels slipped. This one sticks to the walls, without leaving marks, while having to apply only some pressure. The "accu mark" targets look like they may come in handy, but aren't necessary since you can just add masking tape on the top of any level and mark your holes on the masking tape.

5 comments about Bosch DLR165K Laser Rangefinder Kit.
  1. As a land surveyor I appreciate the compact size, rugged construction and accuracy of this device. It can be used in three measuring modes; metric, feet/inches/fractional inches and decimal feet - which I use for my work. It really does measure to a 1/16th inch. I think Spectra Precision, a manufacturer of survey instruments, makes the DLR165K for Bosch. Spectra Precision makes the same unit with their name on it, in a different color, and calles it the HD50 which sells for $179. The Bosch presently sells through Amazon for $144.46. Specs are the same. Why pay more? I have the Bosch and love it!

  2. Simply amazing product. Not to turn into a Bosch cheerleader, but they have yet to disappoint me. I do kitchen design and remodeling. Now, it takes me all of a minute or two to get all my interior wall dimensions taken down to get my computer model started. Try measuring the interior width of a dark closet full of clothes and boxes without one. No more need to ask someone to hold "the dumb end" of the tape measure for you. Just don't throw away that old Stanley 25' just yet.

Seriously, I'd give this 100 stars if it was an option.

  3. This is another well-built and extremely accurate tool from Bosch.

A bright and easy to locate laser highlights your target, and with another touch of the button will supply measurements accurate to within 1/16th of an inch at 165 feet CONSISTENTLY; I personally tested the unit before trusting the readings.

Internal math functions for area, volume and even calculating height from a distance are all built in to the unit and work effortlessly.

The unit is solid, light and very manageable.

Now for the BAD NEWS... it only has 3 measurement formats available: metric, feet w/ decimals, and feet and inches w/ fractions. My industry deals in inches w/ fractions such as, 100 7/8" - and the only two non-metric formats available from this unit would display this same measurement as either 8.4063' or 8' 4 7/8" and would then require conversion.

This inconvenience may or may not effect everyone; however, the price of this unit will defintely continue to turn every head. The other laser units with this accuracy and quality are all over double the price of the DLR165K, making this unit affordable, if not perfect.

    I'm very happy with mine.

  4. I bought this product one month ago. I checked it only so far because I'm planning to use it with starting of June. I checked it in the range of 8m (24ft) and I'm very satisfied. I fixed it then checked the repeatability and it was wonderful. As given in the specifications it really measures in +/-1.5mm (1/16") tolerance. It easily fits in the hand. It has a carrying case for convenience.

I didn't checked it at daylight but the main purpose of my buying is to use it for indoor measurements. So it was very good choice for me.

  5. I will use this tool in locating reference marks related to finding survey benchmarks outdoors. Based on an afternoon's testing, it appears to be effective to about 75 ft. in outside use, which makes it fine for me in typical situations (like measuring distances to reference marks like telephone poles across busy highways)

While I wait for the Dewalt targets I ordered to arrive, I tested it out on a standard size traffic cone wrapped with a couple of bands of 4" 3M-type reflective material. This makes the laser beam's dot MUCH easier to detect (looks like a flash of fire). The red-tinted Dewalt laser-enhancing glasses make it about 20% easier for me to detect the beam, although their shape makes them a bit awkward to wear over ordinary eyeglasses.

The beam reflected well off of dull fire hydrants and mid-bright telephone poles. It's swallowed up by black materials and whites that are too bright. Almost impossible to detect the beam in full sunlight (but something like the reflective traffic cone makes it possible).

The maximum "natural" range I was able to attain was about 110 ft., in dusk conditions, bouncing off a yellow-colored wall. Since there isn't really a sighting mechanism, it's hard to "hit" a target much smaller than 3'x3' at 100 ft. In addition to difficulty tracking the dot, it's hard at long distance to hold it on-target for the 2 sec. or so it takes to compute the range.
