  1. That's right. Our shop uses these 231's for regular duty and tire service. These things last for years despite being dropped on the floor, not oiled regularly, and zero maintenance. Typically the power selector knobs are the first thing to go on these wrenches. If you need good performance and a tool that will last a long time then this is your wrench.

  2. Strong impact for around the garage, has lots of torque takes nuts off be careful when tightening may bust your nut!

  3. Not bad at all reliable. Not as powerful though as some of my other impact guns

  4. I'm a professional diesel mechanic, and I will not buy any other impact but this one. My first one lasted me for 10 years, through drops, kicks, no oiling, etc. I only don't have it anymore because I moved and sold it to a friend who still uses it. I have put this thing head to head with impacts 3 times the price of this one, and it has always been the strongest and most powerful. Most of the people in my last shop borrowed mine because it was the most powerful in the shop, and nearly everyone at my new shop has one. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

  1. Nice tool, best features, Lightweight, lite stays on and the head is short for getting into tight spaces

  2. This thing is comically powerful. It's got enough oompf to drive a 3" drywall screw right through a couple of 2x4's, drive a 1" spade bit through most any lumber, install concrete anchors, etc. I can't say how well it'll hold up as I've only had it a few months, but it's proven to be total overkill for drywalling, great for auto repair, able to easily put 3/8" holes in concrete, etc.

The only complaints I have are minor. The battery life isn't quite as good as some reviews claim. During a day of medium hard use, you'll swap batteries a couple of times. That's fine at home, because they charge in no time, but if I were regularly working away from my charger, I'd want to step up one level and get the LXT Makita lithium-ion driver with the 3Ah batteries. For home use, this one is the best choice though, because the smaller batteries are considerably lighter. So it's not really a complaint, just a caveat.

The other 'complaint' is that this thing is too powerful for some work. My Bosch PS20 driver is still what I use for lighter duty tasks when I want a little more control over how deep/hard a screw gets set. Inherent in an impact driver is an inability to feel how firmly a screw has been installed, because the tool doesn't transmit much twist to your paw. That's great when you're installing a bunch of 3" screws, because it doesn't tire your wrist out. To tell how hard the tool has driven something, though, you almost have to go by sound. The louder the tool, the harder it's hitting the fastener.

All in all, though, this is a very well made tool that does more than you can reasonably expect. If I had to have just one power tool, this would definitely be it.

  3. The product came quickly and was what I expected. Lithium-Ion batteries make this item light weight and easy to handle the built in flashlight gives you light whenever you use it and being an impact driver it doesn't have that kickback you get when using a drill/driver. I recommend it to anyone and with free shipping this product was well worth it.

  4. I work for long periods screwing self-tapping wood screws above my head installing blinds. What this model provides that others don't is the lightweight. Li-ion batteries at only 1.5 ah fit that bill well. You sacrifice a bit of run time between charges, but I have found that a charge lasts all day and if I need a charge, the 1.5 ah charges in only 15 minutes plus I have an extra battery always charged, so this isn't much of a problem for me.
The impact action works great for self-tapping screws, almost like it was designed for them. It requires much less pressure from me, which is better for my back. I find that the clutch, which is NOT adjustable, is set at a good, all-around level. I find that I can control the penetration very easily between the clutch torque level and trigger speed control.
Next, speed is critical and the faster the better for me and this thing is quick. I tried other lightweight cordless tools and found the speed sorely lacking. I bought this from Amazon refurbished and it looked new to me. I have nothing negative to say about this tool!

  5. This is an excellent tool. It's everything I expected and more! It drove 2 1/2 screws into solid wood and countersank them with no problems. And taking out screws was superb also. As a woodworker, I can't rave about this tool enough!

5 comments about Bosch PS40-2A 10.8V Impact Driver w/Holster.
  1. I don't usually write reviews, however this one is worth writing. We saw the Bosch 10.8V Impact Driver at a trade show. Seemed like a good product, but my husband and I were both rather scepitcal because of the battery size. I read a lot of reviews and everything seems positive so we gave it a try. It has been worth every penny and then some. We are both in the construction biz and use it on a daily basis. It has amazing torque for such a small impact driver. The batteries last only slightly less than our 18v drivers and unlike the regular cordless batteries, they are just as good on the last screw are they were on the first. You don't actually realize the battery is going dead until the driver stops. The guys that work for us have been impressed and we have to keep a close eye on thing to make sure it doesn't disappear!

  2. I saw this tool demo'd at my local Woodworker show but was still wondering if the price was too much. Amazon sellers beat the "show" price by over $10 plus free shipping! Anyway this impact driver excels at driving all types of screws. If you need a drill this won't double as a drill because of the impact drive but man it'll drive screws all day long on the Li-on battery plus not wear our your grip or your arm holding it.

One caution - if you haven't used impact drivers before it sounds strange when it really starts cranking but it's working. Also be carefull about going full trigger until you get used to it or you may find yourself driving the screw right through something on way in too far. It has power to spare but you limit the torque by how much power you apply on the trigger.

  3. full charged battery doesn't work outside when the temperature is lower then
25F.IF YOU WANT TO USE IT OUTSIDE IN THE WINTER ,DO NOT BUY IT.

  4. I install Blinds, Shades, and Shutters nearly every day. In an average day I drive 100 screws varying from a #6 X 3/4" to a #10 X 3" at eye level or overhead. I have owned the PS20 since they first came out ($300) because size and weight really make a difference at the end of a long week. Besides size and weight, the things I like about it are; the battery lasts for several days, the LED, and the instant torque control via the finger switch. What I don't like is the low RPM and the fact that when the batteries get cold, they don't work. When the PS40 came out I read it's reviews and was turned off by the constant mention of the impact noise, but I finally gave up and purchased one. Yes, the noise is an issue but not as much as I expected. The thing I like most about it is the RPM, I can chuck a small drill bit or a VIX bit (not recommended by Bosch) and not have to carry a second drill motor. I also really like the higher RPM because driving a screw faster decreases fatigue (the impact feature also really decreases felt torque in my wrist). The only things I don't like are the previously mentioned cold battery issue, less control of the torque, and impact noise. The cold battery issue is easily resolved by moving my tool bag from my van to my shop at the end of the day (also limits possible theft), the torque control issue just takes a little more attention, and the noise is off set by it's speed. As I said in the title, this tool is nearly perfect. Thanks Bosch.

  5. This is a great tool to use especially in my line of work in cabinetry, and the battery does last because of the way this driver drives fasteners,it is not as heavy on power. It will drive fine screws all the way up to heavy fasteners. It is fast in undoing fixings too.Highly Recommended.

  1. Impact drivers have been around for a long time, but only in recent years available in this form. The popularity and use of screws for all types of projects has made the cordless drill/driver ubiquitous. Cordless impact drivers take this concept a step further. Utilizing rotory impacts that produce instantaneous torques much higher than a practical battery driven driver could produce as a continueous torque, the impact driver can drive screws with considerably less effort. The impact driver can be smaller yet drive larger(much larger)screws. It reduces the effort expended. It makes driving screws when in an awkward position practical. Also, fewer striped heads or screw torque-out occur with an impact driver. Impact Drivers spin at higher speeds than even the fastest drill/drivers, driving screws much more quickly, then when they sense resistance, automatically switch to impact mode. This higher speed is also good for drilling small holes thru metal, in that most drill/drivers run too slowly for this application. Finally most impact drivers will drive a 3/8ths diameter 6 inch long lag bolt into solid dry oak without a pilot hole easily, yet handle a light screw with precision and no fear of over-torqueing. If you don't have one, get one.

The Makita LXT 18 volt Lithium Impact Driver is the best I've used, and I've used most of them. It is the right combination of battery power/capacity, weight and overall size, with an excellent feel. The batteries are easy to switch, and the charger is fast. The light is one of those features that looks gimicky but turns out to be really usefull. This is my second impact driver. The first being Makitas original 12 volt model. It took six years of hard use to wear out the batteries of the original, the driver itself is still going strong. As soon as I find the original 12 volt batteries for the right price I'll replace them and have two drivers (very usefull). There are a couple of cons. The battery charger has a fan to control battery temp when charging. If you leave the battery in the charger the fan will run long after the charge is complete. The noise is agravating in an otherwise quiet shop. Really annoying on an otherwise terrific product. The single biggest con is the price. Come on Makita! This thing is just too expensive. Also Makitas solution of offering the same driver with a less capable battery at a lower price point is just plain dumb. Sounds like a dopey MBA's idea. MAKITA! REDUCE THE PRICE OR YOU WILL LOSE YOUR MARKET SHARE! This is a very competitive area with good offerings from Rigid, Dewalt, Milwaulkee, and others. Makita leads the pack in tool quality but trails in value. The Makita LXT 18 volt Lithium-Ion Impact Driver would have gotten 5 stars if not for the price.

  2. am not happy with this product. i don't know the reason but it spins out of screw quite often. my guess is it's overpowered. i also have a 14v impact driver and it is just great.

  3. I got this impact driver to replace my Bosch 14 volt. The bosch worked great, but the battery would run down fairly fast.
The Makita, with it's Lithium battery runs all day long. I previously had gotten a Makita Lithium drill/driver to replace one of my Porter Cable NiCad cordless drills, and I love it.
The problem with this Makita is that there isn't enough "feel" in the trigger. It's very hard to slowly startup when screwing in something. The driver wants to go right to full speed, so you slip out of the screw or tear up the head.
The balance of the driver is fantastic, and fit and finish is normal Makita quality, but I'm sad now that I sold my Bosch for the sake of extra run time.

  4. Just bought this gun a couple of weeks ago and all I can say is.. WOW!

Screws just melt through wood (and keep on going if your not careful!)

The Good: Drills ok, but it's strength is in driving screws and bolts! I have a Panasonic 15.6V drill (which I love) but this gun requires little pressure, does not torque the wrist and has an amazing battery life. The little LED light sure is handy as well. Light weight and powerful! You don't know what you've been missing until you've tried one of these!

The not so good: Drills ok, and a little loud, but heck, it's an impact driver, what do you expect? If your not careful, you can send a screw right through a piece of wood (and it takes surprisingly little effort!). This is a great gun for decks, etc..

If you're looking for just a cordless drill (your one and only) I wouldn't start with this one. A cordless drill would be much more versatile than an impact driver BUT... If your looking for an impact driver, and know what their limitations are, this is the one!

Will report back in a few months to offer feedback after I've put it to the test!

  5. Needed impact driver to do assembly work for a very large retailer. Friends and co-workers recommended Makita 140. Because of it's light weight and long battery life I feel I made the right choice. Would recommend it to anybody.

  1. These 2 replace my old cordless Black and Decker and Skill rachets. They are much lighter, have great battery life and plenty of power. I own a bicycle shop and they really come in handy and are used daily..

  2. Received in good condition and in a timely fashion. However I have not used it enough to really rate its performance.

  3. I bought this a month ago looked and thought nice but I will never use it...WRONG! Lots of torque and the right angle drive gets you into really tight spots. Did a job on a machine that I had done the same repair a year ago, cut the time in half. This isn't an electric screwdriver, although it could be, it's a socket wrench. Gtreat item the person who said it wasn't strong is NUT's. BUY IT!

  4. I purchased this on a whim at a daily special and I have been more than pleased with it. It holds a charge for a very long time--I really am yet to run it down from the initial charge. I've only used it a few times, but have been impressed with the real "tool feel" of this one. Lots of torgue and speed make short work of most jobs and the off-set head is great.

  5. I bought two of these on special at Home Depot and I thought they were great. I thought I had "lost" them and so I bought two more before the special expired. That was in the last week of February and now just a little more than two months after purchasing these, two have just stopped working in the last week. They have a full charge and the charger light is green, but when the button is pushed...nothing. They were not abused or treated badly in any way. I kept them charged. I know they have a one year warranty (I have to send it to them at my cost), but I had never expected to use it. And the fact that two of the four died makes me wonder if it's not an isolated problem.
And it's really too bad, because before they died I would have rated these as one of the best tools I have ever owned. They are far superior to a portable drill for so many jobs. I hope Skil replaces the problem ones quickly.

  1. this is a nice tool to have if you are putting in a deck (for all the screws) also for tight spots that a drill wont get to but I expected a little more power. I guess if I wanted more power there are bigger impact drivers, but that kind of defeated my purpose of having one. overall I am happy to have it and the LED light helps. I would recommend it.

  1. I spend a lot of time at the track with my car and I end up doing a lot of wheel changes. I've owned a number of different tools for the job and borrowed a lot of others... which is how I came across this one and decided to buy it. I've been happy with it ever since. It delivers enough power - quickly - to break loose lug nuts that are on tight or are stuck in place by months of road grime. When tightening, it seats the wheel nicely against the hub. Overall, it makes the job of changing wheels much easier and much faster.

In addition to being useful and delivering power, it's been very durable (been knocked around more than its fair share) and shows reasonable battery life.

A good tool at a good price. Recommended.

  2. This is awesome product! This make changing a flat tire almost like nascar it's so good. My husband tells everyone about it.

  3. I track two cars and repeatedly need to remove lug nuts. This thing twists them right off with great enthusiasm. I love it. My track buddy has one too and it makes pad changes and wheel rotations a cinch. Double battery is a bonus too, always keeps one ready to go.

  4. This item was purchased for my husband. Every tool he owns is DeWalt. Before purchasing a cordless impact he looked at several brands. After reading up on different cordless impacts he found the DeWalt DW059K-2 to be the best on the market in his opinion. This product seems to have the most ft lbs of torque then any other cordless model, and that is what he was looking for. Thanks DeWalt!

  5. I was a little wary of the cordless impact tools that are out, I just didn't think they'd have the power I expect out of an impact wrench, or the battery life, or just be worth the cost. I got this to help working on restoring a 67 mustang with a lot of rusted, frozen bolts. This tool has come in handy on many occasions and it really does pack serious strength.
My only con so far with this would be its weight. To house all that strength it's a fairly beefy tool. If I were holding this all day long it would start to wear on me. Since I only use it for select operations I don't have much of a problem with it.

  1. This Driver works very well and has lots of power for its size. It will definitely reduce fatigue when working, especially overhead, which was the main reason I bought it. I thought I could find a small holster like the Bosch drivers, but none are available. Carrying case looks really good but is often difficult to get in and out of the elastic bands if you don't want to leave it lying out on the job. The second reason I bought this tool was that I thought it would be more convenient than a full size drill but it isn't. If you're looking for easy accessibility I would definitely get a Bosch.

  2. This replaced my wife's ancient (and huge) Makita 9V drill. She uses it for general household purposes, and specifically for drapery installation. It is small, light, and handy. The light is usable and the tool has plenty of driving power. It spins a drill bit a bit faster than the Bosch, but neither should be bought as a primary wood drilling tool, as the drill speed is slow by wood drilling standards, though it works fine for my wife's purposes. (All the minis are slow.) The speed is fine for light metal drilling and, of course, general drill/driver use. The build quality is better than the Bosch, in my opinion, and MUCH better than the Black & Decker mini. This is a well thought out product.

  3. Just got this for my work bag to use whenever and I love it. Battery lasts forever. Fits my hand just right and love the balance feel of it. GREAT PRODUCE!!!! Only bad thing is, I want to buy American made produces and thought that this would have been that, but it says "made in china" on the tool. NOT COOL!!

  4. Until I bought this tool, I was chucking my screwdriver bits into my 18V Dewalt drill. Holding that over my head to hang cabinets got real old, real quick. I bought this unit, and fell in love at first trigger pull. I also find that not having to change bits back and forth makes me much more productive.
I also do automotive work, and the small size is very handy for getting in to do interior work.
    Pros:
The grip is just perfect. Someone else said it was too big, I have very small hands and it fits me perfectly.
Power, this thing has more than enough power.
    Clutch works great.
Durability, a battery seems to last forever, and it comes with two.
    Weight, it's very light.
Fuel gauge: Let's you know the state of charge of the battery. Very handy.
LED work illumination You can also turn on the LED by pulling the trigger just a tiny bit to aid in starting screws without turning on the motor.(see cons)
    Cons:
Using the unit left handed, I seem to keep bumping the fed/rev switch. Not a biggie
LED light is focused too low. The screwdriver tip is right at the very top of the LED beam. It should be closer to the center.

All in all, I love this tool, and it is my tool of choice if I have to turn a fastener. It's not a drill, it is a driver. for this job it is superb.

  5. It was a tough choice between this and the Bosch, which many friends have. It's been only a week since I got this and I'm totally sold. The Milwaukee has got a lot of power: I used it on about 35 3" screws into PT (same battery) and it's a breeze with pocket screws and trim heads. Great for cabinet work.

I've used the Bosch a lot and it would have been fine, but this is newer and better. I made the right choice.

  1. I bought this drill to replace an older on I had. The drill and the drill driver work great. I've gotten out some tough screws that I wouldn't have been able to do without the drill driver. I also like the light on the drill driver. It helps a greast deal when your in a tight corner and cant see the screw head. I really didn't care about the light that comes with it but so far I'ved used it a number of times and it really comes in handy.

  2. Have been using this for about 2 months. Only used an impact driver once prior to buying this, but that convinced me to buy one. I tend to buy Makita tools (also own some Milwaukee). This combo set is great. I mainly use the impact driver for installing cabinetry. It is light enough to use one-handed, freeing up your other hand for positioning the work; it is simultaneously powerful enough to drive just about any screw into any material- without breaking it. Furthermore, it has relieved some elbow tendonitis by making the screw-driving process less laborious. The MForce drill is also a great power driver in and of itself.

  3. this is my second kit , impact and light are great , very powerful, battery lasts long. The drill chuck is very weak and bits get always loose

  4. The impact driver is the best drill I've used in my 10 years of construction. It fits in small spaces that other drills can't and the power is amazing. It's especially nice for making and installing cabinets and the LED light comes in handier than you think. It's comfortable and light and is easier on the wrist because of the size and weight. I recommend this drill to anyone who wants to make their job easier.

  5. I bought this for the drill and the good price about one year ago. The drill is very good, the impact driver and light are both AMAZING. Wonderful set!

  1. This is the best power tool I have had so far. High quality workmanship - it is a pleasure to hold it in your hands. Very powerful. I have never used impact drivers before. This was a real eye opener. I used to use large corded drill to drive large screws. This does better job: (a) breaks less screws (b) drives them better by not breaking the thread in material (c) unscrews them better. The battery lasts long and charges very fast. I love how I can finally have the tool on the belt as it is so small. I also love the built-in light - works miracles in dark places!

I only wish this could also be used as a drill driver as I don't want to have two almost identical tools - one for screw driving and other for drilling. Why not have a switch on one tool to do both jobs?

  2. After much lamenting between the Bosch PS40 and the new Makita BTD142HW 18V 1.5 amp hour Li-ion Compact Impact Driver, I decided to give the Bosch a try first. I have other Bosch tools and the build quality is great. The tool is well balanced and the light works well. Unfortunately it just didn't have enough power or speed for 2 1/2" deck screws into pressure treated compared to even my 12V standard Ni-Cd Ridgid. Way to slow once the impact action started. Perhaps I'm another victim of you either get a powerful one or a weak one. Took it back and bought the Makita today. The unit is only a fraction heavier but much more power and speed. It buries screws with ease and is very very fast. I like the chuck better too. For the homeowner or electrician I think the Bosch is a great tool; beyond that I'm not convinced.

  3. Although the design and construction of the PS40 is very good, mine did not produce much torque. Bosch claims 800 in-lbs of torque, but I doubt it. For example, I attached a 1/2" socket and tried to remove a 5/16" machine bolt. The PS40 couldn't do it - not enough torque. I then used a hand wrench to remove the bolt, and it only required a moderate amount of effort to do so. My old Milwaukee impact driver had no problem removing bolts of that size. As another test I held the socket with my hand as I pulled the trigger all the way back. I was easily able to prevent the socket from turning. And this was with a fully charged battery.

It might be good for hobby use, but not in an industrial setting. I returned mine to Amazon for a refund.

  4. I purchased this driver to help me in my work as an electrician. It's a well designed very compact tool, but won't replace my drill.

First, the features. It's so small! It gets into places my 18 volt drill only dreams about and with the LED lights is very practical. The quality of build is apparent, and I like the balance of weight when it's in your hand. The handle is also well shaped and the direction switch is easily reached with your thumb, something I have to strain for with my 18 volt. The batteries last well although I haven't taken up Bosch on their number of screws driven on a charge claim. But the 30min. charge time seems pretty accurate. It turns at up to 1800 rpm and comes with 2 batteries.

I've tried the tool out on a number of applications. Driving screws into wood, I have found the hammer action begins too soon, on a 1 inch screw the hammer action drives about 3/4 of it. The hammer action also seems to drive in smaller increments, and these two add up to it taking a long time to drive a 1" screw into wood.

I've also tried it out on driving wafer screws into Q-deck. Q-deck is that steel ceiling in warehouse type buildings that is ribbed and wafer screws are about 1/2" and come with and without self-tapping tips. Again the Bosch PS40 begins the hammer action too soon for quickness and I prefer my regular drill for this too.

For my liking, this impact gun works best on steel stud construction, again with wafer screws. Steel studs are a thinner metal than Q-deck and the screws drive in quite rapidly.

The best feature of this gun for me is it's size and weight. There are plenty of times when I'm up a ladder and can just drop the thing in my pouch instead of hauling up my 18 volt drill. It might be slower in some applications, but it is much more convenient to use. And with the hammer action it's also easier to screw without straining against the torque of a conventional drill.

It's also quite handy for removing doors off of panels or any kind of steel box. You can get up to 8 or more screws per cover and with a screwdriver this can take a while. Just be careful when replacing the screws, the hammer action will start to strip the screws if you overtighten.

As a trademan, speed is usually of the essence which is why I refer to it taking too long in some applications. this is not necessarily a fault of the tool, it depends on your priorities. You need to weigh that against the size and ease of use for your needs.

  5. Got this about a month ago, works well for a small lightweight driver. Drives sheetmetal and sheetrock screws perfectly well, drives nuts and bolts with a socket attachment reasonably well. Even drives lags, but not very quickly. I use it daily as an HVAC installer and find it to be quite handy, you never even notice it in your tool belt. Got my set at Home Depot and it came with the flashlight free, a useful addition - I swear the driver, light, two batteries and charger weight less than my Ridgid 18V impactor with single battery.

I've even used this working on a few cars, removes lots of small fasteners quickly and easily. The built in LEDs are awesome.

I carry it into my house each night to avoid letting it get cold. If you use cordless tools in the cold all day or MUST leave your stuff in the truck overnight, Ni-Cad batteries are where it's at.
