  1. you need to get used to the short handle, but after that you won't use anything else. incredible splitter for how light it is. excellent camp tool. stays sharp , excellent metals

  2. I got the 28" splitting axe and liked it so much I got the 28" chopper. At that time I got the Fiskars sharpener and let me tell you that after a few passes I got both axes to shave hairs off of my forearm. These cost a little more than the regular axes but if you take pride in your tools and like functional beauty they are well worth it. To those that say that the handle still breaks well you can break just about anything if you mis-use it. I hear the warranty is pretty good.

  3. I bought a Fiskar axe and sharpener. I've used the axe before and decided to get one of my own. It stays sharp through alot of wood especially fat lighter. Great product.

  4. performed as advertised and noted by other reviewers on light duty yard work and log splitting for fire wood. can easily see this as a must have for any woodsman.

  5. well made, however it is far too light weight and did not come with any real edge; understandable, it is a splitting ax. for something this light though, it should have been sharp. overall it is a quality product just not on the scale of anything more than a pack ax

  1. I have the Fiskars version of this axe and am writing this review to tell you how to save your money. The Gerber-branded version of this axe bears the Fiskars stamp molded into the polyamide near the non-edge side of the head. Go to your local outdoor store and check it out if you don't believe me.

Picked up the Fiskars version at Lowe's for $20, and couldn't be more pleased. Excellent for making tinder, could be great for other things but I've only had it for a day. The only difference with the Gerber is that it does not come with the ballistic sheath (comes with a hard plastic safety cover/handle) but Gerber will send you the sheath if you ask nicely. It seems to fit well in the ice axe loops in my pack so I will probably just tape the blade if I take it camping.

My review only achieves four stars because the handle is rather slippery. Pick up a roll of hockey tape and wrap from the butt of the handle up, and you're still paying half price.

  2. bought this for the hubby to use in his law enforcement job, and is has come in handy SOOOO many times. He was even able to chop down a tree that had fallen in the path of his vehicle into small, moveable pieces so he could continue his pursuit. He takes it with him everyday on the job and to date has used it more times than he can count! An absolutely awesome buy!

  3. The axe is a great size and works great. The only thing that I can think to say is that the metal is a little soft. It doesn't seem to slow it down though. It is durable and a great size. I love it!!

  1. Fiskars wood-splitting implements can't be beat. We have the axe and hatchet and they are the best we have ever owned --- and, with 5 fireplaces, chopping wood efficiently is important.

  2. I own a few Fiskars axes. This hatchet is excellent! Well balanced and keeps it's edge.Very durable handle.I suspect it would last a million years in a landfill..Nice nylon sheath included. This is the perfect small hatchet for preparing kindling.Hot knife through butter..Easy to control.

  3. Nice little hatchet but it comes in a large, molded plastic snap-in case with a big carry handle on top. It would look good on the garage wall but it's too bulky to carry in a backpack. Sending it back and will look at an Estwing hatchet from Home Depot instead.

  1. I am a volunteer with the National Park Service and spend a great deal of time cutting invasive exotic vines and other noxious plants to try to save mature woodlands.

I used a new tool today to beat down some Chinese Porcelain Berry vines and it worked extremely well. To date, my tools of choice have been a 22" machete - for English Ivy, Winter Creeper, Multiflora Rose and tall Japanese Knotweed, and a 12-inch bow saw for anything over 1.5 inches in diameter. I also use a weed cutter (grass whip) for secondary knotweed cutting, etc.

I have found that the difficulty with Porcelain Berry is that it hangs away from native plants, is swingy and poorly supported. It's often so dense that one can't get close enough with hand pruners or loppers to make much progress. And the machete requires tedious, exhausting and repeated hacking. Today I used my brand new Fiskars brush axe on it, expensive at $39 through Amazon, but worth every darned penny.

It's a bit shorter than a machete, very light and well balanced. The handle is high impact plastic and absorbs shock well, the blade is short enough to be relatively safe, and the blade is strong, anti-corrosion coated and takes a good edge. But most of all, the downward pointing hook serves (similar to a grass hook, brush hook, bill hook or ditch bank - which are much heavier and unwieldy) to keep hanging vines and springy arms of shrubs from sliding off the cutting edge. The rounded point of the hook also impacts the ground before the blade, which helps to preserve the edge of the blade.

This tool cuts through vines up to 1 inch like a hot knife through butter! I reckon it is twice as effective as the machete for swinging growth and 4 times as fast as a lopper - plus being much lighter than a lopper. It works equally well on living and dead brush. If you are familiar with the difference between bypass and anvil blades (one for green wood the other for dead wood) on pruners and loppers, you know that you really need two tools if you go that route. Combined with welders gloves, the kind with the extra long gauntlets, I have no reluctance anymore toward bashing into vines that stretch over my head or under shrubs.

My only complaint, and it is minor, is that the handle is not rubberized and less smooth.

All in all, this tool is a joy to use.

  2. This was a great tool...until it broke and flew hundreds of feet into the woods. I used it to cut Asiatic Bittersweet and Porcelain Berry vines. It was great! It really did a nice job of cutting those vines. Good balance, sharp blade, quality shape to cut and pull vines away.

One day, I was cutting vines and the blade broke right off the handle. It was bizarre because there were no prior signs of damage. There were no cracks and the blade did not feel loose. So for the love of Crumb Cake, be careful with this tool if you purchase one.

I am happy to report that after I sent an email (including pictures of the broken tool) to Fiskars' consumer affairs department, they said they would forward the pictures to their quality control department. They were very helpful and quick to respond.

  3. This is a great product, my only complaint is the plastic protective sheath it comes with. I had a little trouble getting it back into the sheath the first time and ended up cutting myself on it's superbly sharp blade. Oops.

  1. I'm a fan of Gerber in the first place but this ax really went beyond my expectations. It ties on easily and conveniently to a pack, is light, seems virtually unbreakable and chews through trees like a hot knife through a cold stick of butter. Working wood for shelters, fire circles, benches and a plethora of other needs is very important in the forest. So you need a solid, reliable tool to get the job done. Now that I own it, I won't go on the trail without this Gerber ax. It's become one of my favorite pieces of gear.

  2. Has good heft, and bites into woods VERY well. Mildly concerned about the small area on the back side of the axe, if only for being able to hit it with something (ala splitting logs), but not enough to cause me to get a new one. I'm a little suspicious of the plastic looking handle, but its took the abuse I've thrown its way so far so I guess I can't complain too much.

  3. Having great success with my Gerber knive (steadfast) over the years, I purchased the camp axe and continue to be amazed! At first I thought it might be a bit long and heavy to pack but now I never camp/hunt without it. The high carbon content holds an excellent edge and in a pinch I've struck flint rock against it to spark a fire (used w/ magnesium in wet conditions). I used it to field dress elk and older deer to split a tough pelvis when my gigli saw was missing (just make sure the bladder is clear)! The tang is great for hammering in tent stakes since no one seems to remember to bring a hammer. I was concerned about the composite handle but it have held up well in the temperate climate of Kentucky though I haven't have enough extreme cold conditions like the high country to know if it would become brittle and crack. However I have camped/hunted all my life and now consider this part of my "essential" gear and that's not an easy feat!

  4. I have numerous trees on my property and I bought this for tree trimming and to make wood chips for my grill. It works great for both. It is very well balanced. The 17" length extends your reach and makes for a powerful impact without swinging it hard. The blade is holding a good edge. I'm thinking of getting one for my son who does a lot of camping.

  1. This is a mean freekin axe. Doesn't vibrate your hands when you come up a lil short and smack the log with the handle. Your not breaking this axe!! I just got done smashing the back of it with a sledge and she shows no signs of wear. No more hickory handles or fake fiberglass, this is the real deal right here. Get the sharpener while your at it.

  2. This is a super sharp axe that is perfect for limbing logs and removing bark. It is lightweight, ergonomic and is nearly indestructable. I highly recommend this great axe at a great price.

  3. I have purchased fiskars axes before and absolutely love them, they do nick up pretty easily but the cutting ability of these axes is so awesome it's a small price to pay, buy the sharpener and prepare to be amazed a how easily this ax slices though everything in it's path

  4. This chopping axe is great for the small tasks that don't require a larger axe or chainsaw to perform. Good solid handle and manageable weight make it a useful tool.

  5. I received this axe today, having received the Fiskars Power Gear Loppers yesterday - wow!!! Cleaning a lot, thinning it out and removing roots is going to be a lot easier.
BTW, I told my wife I had gotten them for her Mother's Day Gift.....of course I was joking, but she's not about me sleeping in the pickup!!!! But Fiskars products are first rate.

  1. This is by far the best axe I've ever owned. My friend and I used this axe to split two chords of wood in a day. Let me tell you, I have some tough, fibrous and knotty logs that my usual maul had all sorts of problems with. This axe made short work of all my wood. I was surprised that for a lighter axe, it was engineered to be comfortable yet very efficient at what it does. I was apprehensive about it since it looks so different than a conventional axe but I am very pleased that the handle is so durable and withstood some hard hits when we missed a few logs (hit them with the handle) late in the day. I would definitely buy another with no hesitation. I also recommend the Fiskars sharpener. It works like a charm on this axe.

  2. Purchase this axe for my husband. When I asked his opinion of the axe his response was "beautiful."

  3. Fiskar's short handles are annoying at best and a buddy with their chopping axe nicked his boot twice already due to its short length. My old splitter and axe handles are a full 8 inches longer than fiskars and are more appropriate for normal sized people. If you're 5 feet tall or less then enjoy a very good cutting tool. Other people think twice.

I ground down the splitting flare on mine and keep it in my pickup for chopping big logs that fall across the jeep trails. Works nice for that purpose.

  4. Fiskars Super Splitting Axe with 28-Inch Handle and 4-1/4# Head #7854 - The handle is too short. You lose a serious amount of mechanical advantage by having only a 28" handle. Because of this, my old dull ax could perform as well if not better. Also the head can be sharpened as a knife. But if you use it often you will run out of space for sharpening. After using it I think it was designed for occasional recreational splitting. I do not recommend it if you plan to do much splitting.

  5. This and the companion chopping axe are great tools. The splitting effort with this is much less than with a convetional splitting maul. Quality and workmanship are excellent.

    Two issues:

    1) The handle is short. If you're over 5'4", this is a one-handed toy. If you're 5'4" or less, this is perfect (unless you want an excuse not to split wood). My wife absolutely loves it. Did I mention that the handle is short?

    2) The nonstick surface treatment makes it unsuited for close work - making kindling out of a single log by hitting the log and axe together on the floor. When you do this, the log often slides off the head and jumps inwards, hitting the hand holding the axe handle. Hard to describe, but this is not the tool for making kindling.

In summary - very nice tool for general purpose splitting for less vertically enhanced folks. Too light for really large and knotty logs, but lots less effort for the bulk of the wood. Despite the short handle, doesn't make a good hatchet for tall people.

  1. Surprisingly good for splitting firewood considering how light it is. Works well - recommended.

  2. I bought this axe after watching the Fiskars axes being run over with a giant truck and not breaking. Fiskars axes being made in Finland so they seem like good quality. I've been using this axe to split a lot of wood. It does a decent job on softer wood like pine. It doesn't do so well on the harder woods. This is due to the edge being too soft. It rolls very easily. Now, I'm not a metalurgist but I can tell you that either the steel used in these axes is very low quality or they just harden it very soft (53-54RC)so edges won't chip. I think it's both. In contrast, a high quality, axe type steel can be very though yet at the same time can have a thin edge to chop well. This isn't the case here. I do like the fiberglass handle that's why I still use this axe. The handle is very light so most of the weight is on the head. In summary: Good hande, not so good head/steel.

  3. I haven't gotten mine yet but my friend has one that I've used several times and it's the best hatchet I've ever seen, so I'm getting one from Amazon instead of stealing his. My ethics should be a shining example to everyone.

*Later* The handle gets slippery in winter and after a couple slips I wrapped it with athletic tape, 1/4" cord-spiral wound with gaps about 3/4 finger width, and another two, tight layers of athletic tape. And I cut the top handle off the case to save space in my pack. Holds its edge very well; which is a good reason to improve the grip; and I still think it's the best you can get.

  4. I have purchased several of these axes for my family and we love them, they are extremely sharp and cut with ease, the one fault that I'm willing to put up with is that they do dent and nick the cutting edge pretty easily because the blade is so fine edged, even when nicked up they cut way better than other axes, I have never found a better cutting edge than these

  5. Never had an hatchet that worked this good right out of the box. Great for cutting small camp wood, limbs and branches.
