  1. The title of this movie perfectly describes the acting. Even The Little Giants had better actors than this, and those kids were only like 4 or 5 years old. Ok, so they were probably 12...that's not the point. Second String tries to use those inspiring lines that all football movies have (you know, the ones meant to give you goose bumps), but they don't succeed at all. In fact, they fail with flying colors. When I first saw this movie, I decided that I'd rather be the sunblock boy at a senior citizen's nude beach than watch it again. Needless to say, I haven't seen it since.

  2. Second String was shown on TNT first.

    real basic feel good movie.
Dan Heller is a 1st round 1990 QB Bust, who was drafted i think by the Eagles, who gave up 2 first rounders to get him, which turned out to be Junior Seau and Emmitt Smith.

John Viot is the head coach of the Buffalo Bills now, and has just made the playoffs with Doug Flutie at the helm. After they beat the Giants and make the playoffs, Viot wants to pick up a QB with a big arm to get the team ready for the playoffs.

because they can only sign one player a week during the playoffs, they get Heller, a not so good Insurance broker.

He signs with the Bills even though they doesn't want to, and the whole time, his wife Teri Pollo (Meet the Parents), is supportive and behind him.

and just by coincidence, the entire Buffalo Bills staring offense gets a stomach virus after eating oysters to celebrate making the playoffs.

so in steps Heller and the second string offense to lead Buffalo into the Super Bowl.

they get lucky against San Diego on a punt return for a TD, then go out and beat Miami for the title game to play Minnesota for the Super Bowl. and you can guess what happens at the end...

the movie is EXTREMELY corny, but also funny. its got some good stuff, like Heller's locker room speech after the title game, and some pretty neat football footage including real football clips from the Bills.

what is also cool is that for the shots at Reich Stadium, home of the Bills, they shot that stuff indoors in a smaller football field that is made to look like the real Bills stadium, like the scaled down Alamo in Disney's Davy Crockett.

overall, Second String is a good movie, but it is nowhere near The Replacements, Any Given Sunday, Remember the Titans, or Necessary Roughness. Like someone said, honestly, Little Giants was better than Second String.

  3. Bellows is supposed to be Doug Flutie?
That's who this movie was originally
supposed to be about. I hear Flutie-
ball got a paycheck on this one too.
They stole the money. Since it's sort
of about Douglas Richard Flutie, I'll
give it a merciful ** out of five
    since amazon.com's rating scale is
lamost as liberal as Hitlery Clinton!

  4. First off, I have to say this is not a horrible film but there are many other football films out there that are waaaaay better. One I can easily name is Friday Night Lights. That one is an underrated classic. Second String, on the other hand, has so many sports cliches (the kicker with no confidence getting it back on Super Bowl, the tired run down player who wants to show he can win, the talented quarterback nobody gave a chance, the arrogant quarterback who doesn't care about anyone, the ruthless coach who doesn't believe in his player until the very last moment, the..okay I think you all get the point), that it practically ruins the whole flow of the film. Gil Bellows is fine but has no screen charisma. I think it would have been better for him to be cast as a coach and have Eads as the quarterback struggling to get his self-esteem back. Jon Voight looks like he's played one too many control freak coaches (Varsity Blues anyone?) and looks like he doesn't want to be in the film half the time. Anyway, unless you're a fan of one of the actors in the film (I love Eads that's why I got it) this film may not last long in your DVD collection.

  5. great acting, great story line , and the sequence of events is wonderful. the director of this movie should be given a golden globe and academy awards.

  1. Freedom's Fury is a documentary on the events surrounding the Hungarian Uprising of 1956 and the famous 'Blood in the water' match that followed it. It's a solid, journeyman work but lacks the emotional connection and human drama that separates good documentaries from great ones.

Much of the documentary shows newsreel of the events leading up to and during the Hungarian uprising of 1956. For someone unfamiliar with those events, this part is informative but I believe takes the focus off the individuals involved in the story. There is a good interview with Kati Marton about her families escape but the film needs more of these individual stories and less of newsreel footage. This would have given the viewer a greater emotional connection to the people involved and really bring out what it was like to be there.

As for the famous match, I was surprised at how little of it was shown in the film. I would have like to know more about how the participants felt during the match, both Hungarian and Russian. I felt the filmmakers should have developed the characters a little more, again to help the viewer connect with them. There was some of that but not enough.

  1. We bought this for our son because it contained the short "How to Play Football", which is one of my all-time favorites. As with most of the 'toons of that day, much of the verbal humor is subtle and goes right past the kids. My wife and I are laughing at the sarcasm, the kids are laughing at the visuals and we all have a good time.

  2. One of the best of Goofy. When I was young (1988 approx.), my sibling and I used to watch it at least one in a week and we were laughing every time.
Few years ago, I found it in a video store (like Blockbuster) and I rent it and enjoyed like in the 80's.

I strongly recommend it for yourself or for your children. You're gonna love it!!!

  3. This is such a great DVD....and the words "classic" and "favorites" truly describe this DVD. It's so much fun to watch over and over again....fun for kids of ALL ages!!!

  4. Lots of fun. Ths kids love it. Baseball, Hockey, Basketball, Football, Golf, and Gymnastics.

  5. The DVD didn't work at all. I tried it in my DVD player and in my computer and it didn't work in either.

  1. This movie has become one of my favorites. The story comes together beautifully.I also liked watching the extreme skiing. This movie was not promoted well. This was unfortunate as the actors did a great job.J.R.Christine(Judy)-Michigan

  2. Aspen Extreme (1993) Former A-Team writer Patrick Hasburgh branches out with this endurance test disguised as a movie about two Michigan guys who move to Aspen, Colorado. They become ski instructors and in a completely surprising turn of events, meet up with every ski movie cliche you could think of. The lead meets a wonderful female disk jockey who truly understands him and a rich woman who wants to use him as a plaything. Hmmm. Which one will he choose? The sidekick gets mixed up in some shady dealings and nearly drags his buddy down with him. How will he pay for this crime? Uh oh! What about that nasty German ski champ who has taken the trophy four years in a row? Who could possibly beat him? And why won't the actress playing the rich woman (Finola Hughes-Generation X) stop smiling? There's nothing funny here! So, hey, Patrick, I don't think Mr. T. and Dirk Benedict are busy; might be time to start thinking about that reunion show!

  3. We were SO disappointed when we opened the DVD case - and a DIFFERENT movie was in there! We still don't have Aspen Extreme. TOO MUCH TROUBLE to send it back.

  4. Realistic of Aspen, characters excellent, & ski scenes exilerating. A definite A+++++.

  5. This is a classic coming of age story with a ski twist. Speaking of skiing, there are great shots of Doug Coombs and Scott Schmidt ripping. Plus it has great fun with cliches. Dig it!
