  1. I liked the book a lot, because it's about lacrosse and lacrosse is almost my favorite sport. There are couple of reasons why I liked this book. One is it was a great book, it had a lot of people yelling and getting mad at each other.
There are some mean people and some nice people in this book. Todd and Jeff are the nicest players. Todd is overweight and the doctor told him to lose weight! So he plays lacrosse. Jeff, the coach's son, tries to help Todd become a better lacrosse player. Garry, Todd's brother, has played lacrosse for 4 years and is a little nice. Michael is very, very mean. He is the top scorer in the league. He doesn't want Todd to play lacrosse because he thinks Todd stinks. Evan is also very mean. He likes to be around Michael all the time.
I would recommend this book to people that like lacrosse. It was a great book and I think those kind of people would like this book very much.

  1. If you're coaching boys lacrosse, this is the book for you. However, if you're interested in girls or women's lacrosse, don't waste your money here. There's only a few pages on girls rules and even those are skimpy and practically useless.

  2. This book is NOT for US field lacrosse, boys or girls. Indoor Canadian...i suspect it is great, but I have no clue.

  3. This book is not about lacrosse played on grass fields. It is about indoor "box" lacrosse.

I'm sure it's a fine box lacrosse book, and some drills would cross over, but you need to be clear that this book is not about "normal" lacrosse.

I also bought "Lacrosse Technique and Tradition" by Hopkins Coach Dave Pietramala. That one is great.

  4. The title is misleading. It is not about the game of lacrosse as we know it in the United States.

I assumed that I could trust the "Dummies" books to be a good general resource. However, this is not published in the U.S.

It is mostly about the game of "box lacrosse" played indoors in Canada. The section on coaching your players how to cross-check pretty much says it all about how useful it is to the U.S. youth coach or player!

  5. This book is a great overview of the sport of box lacrosse. It does mention differences between box and field lacrosse and briefly discusses women's lacrosse as well. It's discussion on the equipment, positions, skills, and tactics of box lacrosse is it's strong point though. The Dummies title is misleading as there is plenty of information contained inside. Overall if your interested in learning more about box lacrosse it'd be hard to go wrong with this book.

  1. I was highly disappointed with this purchase and felt like I just threw away fifteen bucks. There is nothing in this book that anybody who has any experience at all in the gym, would not already know. I'm not even sure that a complete novice would benifit any from this book. I immediately gave it to my tri club to use as a give-away/door prize. Or maybe somebody could use it to start a fire. Tried to give it zero stars, but the website wouldn't let me.

  2. TriPower is a fantastic plan for both men and women to achieve balance, build core strength and stay injury free during tri training. Power in all 3 sports comes from proper form and technique, and the program outlined here supports and balances out all 3 sports. Balanced strength training is the key to not getting injured, and this book more than any other i found achieves the best balance you can get.

  3. So I'm 37 now and competed in triathlons for 12 years before taking a few years off due to 3 small children (well, my wife actually had them...). I started using this book because i had gained some weight and I was worried about injury. Not only did this book help me get mileage back up injury free - but I'm going faster than I ever have before. MOST IMPORTANTLY: If you follow the book, it doesn't take a ton of time. As someone who is time constrained - I can do this program in the evenings at home. 2x/week it takes 20 min. 3x/week it takes 5-10 min. For the past 12 weeks I was running only (no swimming except occassional cross train). I finished my half marathon and am now going into core tri-training. I got back in the pool this week and WAS FASTER than when I was swimming 3x/week - I believe because of the strength/core training. MUST HAVE!!

  4. This book is a terrific overall fitness reference. If more people trained and stretched to improve total body function using this book, we would see a rapid decline in chronic pain and disease.

  5. I have been training triathletes and made a mistake buying this book. This is basic knowledge, nothing new, nothing to add to the information out there. If you are doing your own program and this is new information, then this is the book for you, if you have a background in training and understand the basics of core and strength save your money.

  1. I coach high school Lacrosse in Missouri, and have found this book a valuable tool in teaching Lacrosse to my players and their parents. I also loan this book out to other coaches and assistant coaches. The book is very comprehensive, but it is so easy to understand, that a total novice at Lacrosse is able to understand the game and even feel like an authority. It covers rules, history and strategy. In an area where Lacrosse is relatively new, this book is a god-send

  2. This book is an excellent tool for novices of the game. It gives chapters about the positions and techniques of the game and could be very helpul if you are learning lacrosse. It is also a resourceful tool as a coach (of kids under about 14) and gives pointers on all aspects of the game. If you have been playing lacrosse for a while you may want to look to another source for information about the game, although this book would be somewhat entertaining.

  3. Hey, I'm a 14 year old all county state and divios player and sting attack/ meddie for the chappaqua cross fire. i hily sagest you ording this book. 3 years ago this book got me into to the game. i had the skills but not the rules down. it was fun to read and i still look back at it. email me i always luv to talk about lacrosse. hell ya my email is bballjg87@aol.com and title it lax stuff. thanxs great book and good luck

  4. This book helped me out a lot. I play goalie and defense and this book has very helpful sections on both postitions. My firends and I brought this to our team practice and our coach read it and said that he will use all of the drills given to help us out. This is a very good buy and i reccomend it to every beginning and advanced player out there.

  5. My 9 year old son just started to play and we knew NOTHING about the sport. This kept it simple and also helped us to help him at home.

  1. David Pietramala and Neil Grauer have managed to take a classic and update it without sacrificing the integrity, spirit, and purpose of the first edition by Bob Scott. This Second Edition is an absolute must read for any lacrosse coach, player, and fan. Pietramala has done a masterful job of giving the reader insight into the modern game and his own personal views on the sport and the players, much as did Bob Scott before him. Neil Grauer has performed a flawless job in fine tuning the syntax and overall style to make it a very enjoyable read while remaining instructional. Truly the best contemporary book on the sport of Lacrosse. It is a rare and wonderful glimpse into the mind of a great player/coach, and the legacy that is Johns Hopkins Lacrosse.

  2. As noted in the title, this is an update of Bob Scott's classic book on Lacrosse technique and coaching from the 1970's. Coach Pietramala has provided the best of both worlds in this edition. He has retained much of the old school, tried and true techniques and instruction from Coach Scott's original, while adding new techniques and strategies from the last thirty (!) years. I have played the game for 35 years and coached for six, and I have referenced the original edition countless times. Having Coach Pietramala's updates and observations included make this an invaluable reference and a must-have in any Lacrosse coaches library. It's also a great history of the legendary Johns Hopkins program for any fan of the sport.

  3. Whether this book was updated or not it still
does a great job! From the time this was first written
in the 1970's till now, Lacrosse has become the fastest
growing sport in the US. If you want to know the inside poop
of the Johns Hopkins program, you'll love this book!

  1. Hi,

the book seemed fine, but the box was open and the pages turned back alittle.

  2. This book is a welcome addition to the lack of material on lacrosse, but it doesn't add much depth to the subject and is not very useful as a reference or as a tool for coaches. I would recommend Dave Pietramala's book over this one, hands down.

  3. This is a very good starter book, especially for teaching the basics to youth. Definitely worth it for a youth coach or assistant coach, or anyone trying to teach the fundamentals to kids. Very reasonable price. I learned a lot from it.

  4. This is a good book for a new lax coach at the youth level. Not for an experienced coach or someone who wants to take things to the next level. Provides basics of the game and running a team. Better than most books of this type.

  5. While I haven't finished reading the book yet, it has had some great information so far. I have never been a coach for a sport & this has helped out with practice ideas & skill development.

  1. I've been coaching girls lacrosse for youth and high school for years. Bought this book because it was new to the market and advertised that it was for advanced players and coaches so I thought I might pick up a few tips.

    Unfortunately, I was greatly disappointed.

First, the book got me off on the wrong start by stating that the traditional women's positions of first home, 2nd home, 3rd home, Attack and Defensive wings, center, third man, cover point, point, and goalie had been replaced by the men's position of attack, midfield, defense and goalies.

WRONG!!! The women's positions are still valid and widely used. In fact at the 2009 US Lacrosse Convention, women's coaches and umpires were told to use the traditional names of the positions. Specifically, "If you coach the girls game, you teach the girls game - and that includes the correct names of the positions." This statement was met with great applause by the thousands in attendance.

For this author to state that the girls terminology for positions are confusing and strict, is a joke. I have taught girls as young as 6 these positions and they "get it". It is not difficult for them. They also know where to spread out on the field and how to set up to take advantage of the entire field as well as how to play both offense and defense despite their position. The names of these traditional positions is not limiting in any way, shape, or form.

Despite being upset by the page 7 comments regarding the names of positions in this book, I continued to read on - only to find lacrosse "basics" rather than the "advanced" information I had been fooled into believing existed in the book.

For example, there were sections on the equipment you need to purchase in order to play, how the game is played (length, the center draw, out of bounds, stand on the whistle, etc.), fitness, conditioning, making sure you plan for practices, conditioning during the off-season, and recruiting.

Very little on drills and strategies.

All-in-all, I would have to say this book is not what the title "a guide for advanced players and coaches" leads you to believe it is.

  2. Excellent resourse for getting a Jr Girls LAX program started early. There is more than enough information for beginner to advanced players, more specifically for coaches. Easy read. The Hopkins way.

  3. Johns Hopkins coach Janine Tucker, whose previous book is the benchmark introduction to girls' youth lacrosse, has now written a comprehensive and detailed reference book for players and coaches at the high school level and above. From advanced individual techniques to team strategies, she has put together a one-stop resource for players and coaches (minor quibble: I would like to have read her approach to fast break defense). Although I have coached high school girls' lacrosse for a number of years, this book will be my primary reference in preparing for next season.

I particularly appreciated the bonuses: entire chapters dedicated in detail to effective practices, offseason conditioning, and the college recruiting process.

Note: I was moved to write this review after reading the first Customer Review, which in my judgment is unfair and completely erroneous. Read my comment to that review for more details.

  4. This is probably the most comprehensive book out there. Lots of information covering many aspects of the game.

Please don't let unfairly negative reviews fool you. I'm a (somewhat) experienced lacrosse coach; I own this book, and I learned some good stuff from it. Even if you think you know everything, and you think you teach a skill the right way, it's helpful to read how another coach teaches and explains the game. They may use a word or example or term that makes better sense. Simply, what I liked is that a top-level coach pushed my understanding of the game a little further.

  1. The first and only lacrosse coaching book I've bought. Very helpful in teaching basic techniques and organizing practices. Offers many themed games and drills that provide variety and fun for youth practices. Also provides tactical drills and games for "A" teams. I highly recommend this book for any coach looking for some fresh ideas or any prospective coaches looking for an introduction to the sport.

  2. I was asked to coach girls High School Lacrosse, I never coached before, but played mens, this book was A-Z everything you need to coach girls or boys lacrosse.

  3. This is the best book that I've read on coaching lacrosse. It's reads very easy and makes it easy to teach. I'd recommend that all new and old coaches read this book at least once.

  4. I am new to the game of lacrosse, but have volunteered to help coach my son's team of beginners (first & second graders). This book was a tremendous help in explaining the general rules, structuring practices, and drills.

The book references a coaching system called the 'Positive Coaches Alliance', which gives great pointers on approaching practices and general coaching philosophies. I have coached soccer for six years and still found some of the coaching methods to be very helpful. Not only for lacrosse, but for caoching in general. I will be applying these techniques to soccer (along with modifying some of the lacrosse drills).

I highly recommend this book as your first lacrosse resource.

  1. This is the definitive "how-to" book on lacrosse! Kelly Amonte Hiller has proven her successful coaching skills on the field, and her book is a comprehensive insructional manual on how to play her brand of winning lacrosse.

Beginning with an introduction which highlights the importance of adopting a positive attitude towards the game, Amonte Hiller imparts her detailed, thorough understanding of the game of lacrosse. In a clear and concise manner, chapter by chapter, she breaks down the mechanics of the game, while providing helpful photos of specific skills, as well as diagrams to illustrate her instruction.

The format includes both individual and team development skills, and concludes with specific drills to effectively master the game.
This is a book which will provide comprehensive instruction for the novice coach and player, as well as help fine-tune the skills of an experienced coach and advanced player. Its approach is simultaneously analytical and user-friendly. A "must-read" for any player or coach looking to improve their game.

  2. what a powerful tool for every coach, player, and student of the game of Womens Lacrosse. The authors do a phenomenal job of laying out the basics to the cutting edge skills one needs to coach and/or be a champion lacrosse player!

  1. This book is perfect for coaches and players who are new to the game of girls'/women's Lacrosse. Several years ago, when I was recruited to coach my daughter's youth league team, I searched high and low for a book, such as this one, covering the girls' game. I found plenty of books for boy's Lacrosse and a few that had a chapter or two covering girls' Lacrosse. Often, these books covered very outdated techniques and methods. Bottom line, there was no comprehensive guide for teaching and developing young girls into well-rounded Lacrosse players. Coach Tucker's book is a great guide for dad's like me who have men's Lacrosse experience, beginning coaches, new players, and, of course, baffled parents. My favorite section covers the suggested drills. Each drill is clearly defined and well diagramed. She also provides great advice for managing practice and keeping the girls involved and excited about playing lacrosse. I plan to implement many of her suggestions into my practices. A must read for coaches and parents who are interested in developing technically sound players who love the game of girls' Lacrosse.

  2. Don't let the title fool you, anyone with an interest in girl's lacrosse will benefit from reading this. Players, Parents, Coaches, etc. It does a really nice job of going over the basics and emphasizing what is important for a female lacrosse player. She offers some fun games and drills that can be used at any level.

  3. Whether you're a lacrosse player, parent of a player, or a coach, this guide will teach you some important concepts. Games and drills to improve ability are included.

  4. This is an excellent tool for getting a better understanding on how to support and help my daughter improve in lacrosse. I wanted to play an active role by getting the book as well as equipment for both of us. Now we toss the ball to each other and practice what we've read in the book. She's definitely getting better.
