- Inner-city youth discovering their strengths, pushing limits and getting a chance to see the world is heartwarming. The actual double dutch jumping is pretty exciting.
The best part of the film is that the you the viewer, can vicariously become a part of the team.

5 comments about Kathy Smith - The Rules of Fat Burning.
- I love this exercise DVD. I owned a few other exercise DVDs, but this one, The Rules of Fat Burning, is the one that I always come back to. I had this DVD for about over one year and I am still using it. Over the time, using the DVD shapes my body and also keep me interested.
- If I were to recommend any DVD to someone just starting out exercising, it would be this one. Kathy Smith doesn't just give you cardio workouts, high intensity workouts, or weight lifting. She gives you two sessions of each, allowing you to build your week. I have used this DVD five days a week for six months, and still find it effective. I like that I have the choice to pick and choose, and yet I also have the structure of something I am familiar with. I will agree with the other reviewers that the cardio workout is hard to learn at first, that the warm-ups are missing, and that there is no section that works out your abs. But you can easily overcome these flaws (take a little time to learn the routine, warm up yourself, and substitute your own ab workout). Rarely do you find such a good mix of workouts on one DVD. It's worth every cent.
- In this video, instructor Kathy Smith has taken portions of her previously released workouts, chaptered them, and organized them on one nice, programmable DVD. The excellent chapter menu allows you to choose amongst each of the six workouts offered, and you can program them to play in any order you would like, doing just one workout or all six; you can even select the same workout more than once. The six workouts are comprised of two "long slow" cardio segments, two interval cardio segments, and two weight training workouts. Full descriptions are provided below.
1) Long Slow 1, Low Impact (20 minutes). This workout comes from the Timesaver Cardio Fat Burner video. Kathy uses mostly basic steps--eg, v-step, knee lift, hamstring curls, grapevines, etc.--but the choreography becomes a bit more complicated as the segment continues, and Kathy frequently takes it from the top. However, the moves are fun, and it's a high-energy workout.
2) Long Slow 2, Kickboxing (15 minutes). This segment is taken from the first half of Kathy's Kickboxing Workout. She leads simple drills using the jab and cross punches plus front and side kicks. Some jump kicks are included, and there's also an easy combination towards the end.
3) Interval 1, Functional Fitness (20 minutes). This workout comes from Functionally Fit Peak Fat Burning, and it alternates two minute high intensity intervals with lower intensity recovery periods. During the latter, you get in a bit of lower body strengthening with moves such as squats and lunges. Overall, this program is more athletic-like, less fun.
4) Interval 2, Jump Rope (17 minutes). This segment comes from Aerobox, a video Kathy did with boxer Michael Olijade, who leads the workout. Michael takes you through progressively more difficult jump rope variations; one of the background exercisers follows along without the jump rope. Simple boxing punches/footwork segments come in-between the jumping segments.
5) Weights, Upper Body (20 minutes). This segment comes from Timersaver Lift Weights to Lose Weight. Here Kathy uses a dual track system which allows you to lift lighter with more repetitions or lift heavier with breaks between sets. Kathy begins with back work, moves on to chest, biceps, tricpes, and finally shoulders.
6) Weights, Lower Body (20 minutes). This segment is also from Timesaver Lift Weights to Lose Weight. Most of the exercises are performed in a standing position (squats, lunges, side/front extensions, etc.) to work your legs, but it also includes some lying hamstring/glute work using a chair.
Overall, this is a very versatile DVD providing a variety of workout options. However, there are a few minor flaws: 1) there are no warm-ups or cool-downs, so you'll have do some light cardio before as well as some stretching after, and 2) there is no abs work--the 7-minute abs segment from Lift Weights to Lose Weights is excellent, and it's a shame it wasn't included here. Otherwise, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this DVD for advanced beginner to intermediate exercisers.
- Overall, this has to be one of Kathy's best DVD's! Not only does Kathy provide 4 different, challenging, and fun cardio workout, she also provides two weight lifting segments. ALL SIX of the workouts are challenging whether I've been doing them for weeks straight or have just popped one in to supplement another workout. Kathy is fun and lively--I always find her encouraging (even when she's pushing me to my limits).
And, I love that Kathy doesn't repeat herself constantly. Sure, Kathy moves fast and you may have to rewind the video a few times when you first start out (which is the benefit of working out with a video and not with a live instructor), but this allows you to go through the workout without stopping once you have it down--a major plus if your going to continue to use the video for several years, as I have. Several previous reviewers have complained about this aspect of her video--they must not be willing to work hard. If you don't understand a move, rewind and push the option on the remote! Being physically fit doesn't just fall into your lap; it takes effort!
- I was excited to take this DVD home, but discouraged as the first few minutes (what felt like an eternity) she was discussing fat and calories. I was hoping to get right into the aerobics.
And then, the aerobics came on. There was no description on how to get into the moves. In fact, I felt like a complete idiot in the privacy of my own home, trying to keep up with her and get the correct moves. As soon as I thought I got the moves right, she went into a different set of fast moves. Perhaps I am not coordinated, or this is really not for beginners like it said.
I gave up on the video after 3 minutes of trying to exercise. I may not return it, but I don't think I'll be using it anytime soon. I will move on to someone who helps direct you through the fitness. I bought this video in the discount bin, and was instantly reminded you get what you pay for.

5 comments about Ropesport: Advanced Workout.
- I love this workout tape.
I started with the Ropesport intermediate DVD and moved up to this one. It's a great half hour workout with a variety of jumps. The intermediate stops and starts, but this one has a quick ten minutes of jumping and you've already started working up a sweat by the time the warm up exercises start.
If you get bored with the jumps featured in the video you can add different ones, detailed in the DVD (the intermediate DVD has a bunch of alternative jumps as well, which I actually prefer more).
Yes, the "celebrities" are annoying and the participants in the tape yell and whoop so much that it becomes annoying, but considering how good the actual workout is, I've gotten over these annoyances. (And to be truthful there aren't that many jumprope DVDs, so there's no alternative but to adjust.)
- Who knew skip/rope jumping could be so interesting? When I first watched this DVD (I watched it without skipping to begin with) I was blown away at the variety and expertise of rope jumping. I also wondered if I'd ever be able to actually do the moves - it looked difficult. I realised that as I was an inexperienced rope jumper, my skipping was not up to this level. I needed to buy the beginner DVD. It was definitely worth the money. The beginner DVD shows you all the different moves and gives you tips on how to learn them.
This DVD more or less assumes you know the moves & gives you a workout. I'm steadily working my way through learning all the moves - you don't need to be able to do them all before doing this Advanced Workout - just modify the workout. I try and learn one different move each week - of course some you get very easily and others require a little more persistence.
I liked this Advanced Workout DVD - it's a quality presentation that has a motivating workout. Eric Niles is a very reassuring and encouraging trainer (by the way, he can really skip!). I also like the CD that matches this workout (an additional purchase). You can save it to your iPod and workout anywhere - very handy. Thoroughly recommend this DVD BUT if you haven't done ropesport before it's worth buying the beginner DVD first. One things for sure, the more I skip, the more my fitness improves and my skipping ability.
One further important item - the jump rope. You have to have the right type. Plastic or leather jump ropes don't do the job. I've got both and Eric Niles states on his beginner DVD that you need the right rope. He's right, the plastic or leather ones are not flexible enough & get tangled up too easily. I purchased my jump rope from the jumprope website.
- I really like this workout! I had my doubts at first with the celebrity hoopla, but don't be fooled. You don't have to use a jumprope to get the full benefits. I kept hitting myself in the face with the rope in my tiny workout room so I opted for cutting two lengths of rope about 1 foot long. It works really well and I'm not hitting myself in the face anymore. It feels good to get such a great cardio workout. I keep getting a better workout each time since I'm getting the footwork down and feeling more confident.
- Thought I would as I'm not like most ordinary people - love jumprope. But there was definitely too much talking.
Also there should be more options provided if you're:
a. not in possession of a jump-rope, or can't use it where you are for some reason
b. not picking up the moves as quickly
c. more advanced moves
I'll use it every now and then - not a total loss!
- I to skip the basic workout. Although I cannot jump using the jumprope, I use the handles and I get an excellent workout. I especially enjoy doing the situps at the end. I can really feel it in my abs. I really enjoy working out and its important to find something that you really enjoy doing.

- This is a great video which makes you sweat but I do recommend if you're new to jump roping to get the beginners first. I'm new at it and it makes you work up a sweat.
- I weigh 200lbs and I am a 5'6" female so I am not in the best cardio condition. This Intermediate workout was a piece of cake. You do more turning of the rope than actual jumping. 3/4 the DVD is stretching and instructional and the rest is sissy jumping. If you are a guy or an athletic male/female looking for a challenge. This is NOT it.
There are jumprope segments in Aerobox (with Kathy Smith + Michael Olajide) that are SOOOO much more challenging.
- Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2R0NHN9CYRL31 We bought the basic video in this series, but I had already been jumping for awhile so I was beyond it. I didn't check any others and now I'm at the point where I don't want to be influenced by anyone else.
You'll have to read the other reviews to determine if this video is to your taste. My approach as seen on my site is much more free-form and doesn't include any celebrities except my grand-daughter, Amara, who hasn't been discovered yet.
Maybe your best bet is to risk ten bucks on the DVD and also check out my site, 'Quest For Endorphins', via my profile. Knowing two approaches is always better, and you can use the strengths of both. If you're not really active now, and you really get into jump rope, it will change your life, so I guarantee it's worth risking ten bucks.
Everything on my site is free. A lot of the material is about motivation, but the crown jewel is JumpRock, which I 'invented', followed closely by Heavy Hula Hands, which I really did invent as far as I know.
I'm 61 in a month and started learning jump rope at 55. I did not expect the results I've gotten in my wildest dreams or to be able to jump rope like this, or that it was even possible for someone non-athletic. Between ages 30 and 55 I mostly rode an exercise bike for mood and energy for a half hour every day, so there's nothing in my background to indicate I should get these results, which is why I think almost anyone can, and since there's no drudgery, I don't consider it 'hard work'.
My video shows what I would consider an intermediate workout if I did workouts. It's a video I have posted on my site illustrating 'exercises' you can incorporate into JumpRock, which is dancing. I didn't learn jumprock by doing the exercise routines, I learned JumpRock and developed the routines from JumpRock, which is really just dancing, which is what it's all about for me.
You can see samples of JumpRock to hundreds of songs on the site, and I tell and show you everthing I know, all for free. I'm trying to raise my profile and the profile of 'Energy Focused Exercise' so I can promote it on a larger scale.
- I am new to jump roping, I love the music and the instructors. To me they make it interesting and fun. The music makes me want to keep going and going. I would recommend this as it got my heart rate up.
- Unfortunately, I cannot give this video a good or bad review. I made the purchase thinking, "this is going to be easy because I can jump rope". I actually LIKE to jump rope. However, when I made the purchase, I wasn't thinking that there isn't space in the house to watch the video AND jump rope. Therefore, I had to return it. Good luck to those of you who have purchased it and have had success with it. For those of you thinking about making this purchase, make sure you have space to actually use it.

- This is not really a workout video. First, the three instructors give you detailed information about choosing the jump rope that is right for you, the proper apparel, etc. and then they go into basic jump roping skills, such as resting moves (turning the rope in figure eights and double turns) then the basic two-foot jump, lunges, jacks, etc. There is a short 15-min introductory workout that briefly goes over these elements but they stop a lot. The main instructor is Louis, and Eric and Kelly are really just there to add cheesy commentary or occassionally offer advice. They then have a section just for free-styling and you are supposed to do your own thing.
So basically they just teach you the basic techniques and then you're on your own. It's not the structured workout I was looking for...but if it works for you go for it. They do a very good job of breaking down the steps and giving information.
- This is a basic introduction to jumping rope. A good dvd for beginners since it introduces you to basic jumping. Video provides easy to understand instruction on how to jump correctly.
- Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R38BJIO5VQSMQK I got this DVD a couple of years ago when I had already been jumping awhile, so I was already past needing it. I didn't check out any of the others and now I don't want any outside influences.
You'll have to decide for yourself whether this DVD is to your taste. My video review shows how I would go about learning to jump from scratch. As usual, I'm too long winded, so I'll have to pick it up on another review. I already reviewed Ropesport: Intermediate Workout and posted what I would consider some exercises for an intermediate routine.
Whether you purchase this DVD or not, I hope you'll visit my site, Quest For Endorphins, and see what I learned on my own. I'm not about exercise and fitness. I'm about JumpRock and energy which yields the same result and is psychologically more motivating on a day-to-day basis. I'm definitely not about using will power to make myself exercise, which is how this all came about.
Visit my site via my profile to see what I'm talking about.

5 comments about Jump In!.
- One of the great disappointments of my childhood is that I never learned to double dutch.
One of the great things about the Jump In DVD is that it shows you how to jump double dutch. The movie itself goes a ways to both demystify double dutch, and show it off in spectacular ways.
Corbin Bleu and Keke Palmer are good spoilers for each other. He's a little Disney, and she's a little ghetto. You end up rooting for both of them together.
We wanted to watch this movie over and over in my house; it appealed to the boys as well as girls, and that's hard to do. It had the boxing, and the cool jumping moves that excited everyone.
It was refreshing to see a movie that wasn't about hooking up or anything sensual at all. Free from all that garbage, you could just sit back and gawk at the beautiful hair braids, the flashy costumes, and watch the incredible jump rope moves to the booming sound tracks. There were ear to ear grins at my house, as we kept rewinding to see that last cool move. That made it one of the 7 happiest black movies of all times.
- I've seen Jump In on The Disney Channel before and I liked it right away when I saw it.In Jump In I loved all of the cool moves & stunts they did when they did Double Dutch.Corbin Bleu gave his Best Performance when he played Izzy Daniels the boy who choose Double Dutch over Boxing. When I saw this movie it brought back alot of memories from my Childhood that I use to jump rope alot & doing double dutch. When I went to my aunt's house to spend time with her kids I watched the DVD of Jump In! with my aunt's kids and they liked the movie my cousins are ages 7 and 5.Buy Jump In it's worth watching it and the kids will love it!!!!
- I bought this to view because I am a music teacher and one of my lessons was to teach the song from this movie "Jump to the Rhythm". I wanted to watch it after teaching the song. My students loved it! It has a great message to it, about being yourself and fulfilling your own dreams not the dreams of someone else.
- Wish there were more movies like this. Completely clean. Shows good family life and people working out problems within their relationships. My 5 and 7 year old loved it and the 7 year old said it was his all time favorite movie. Even my 3 year old enjoyed watching some of it. It also got my kids very interested in jump roping. Definitly 5 stars!
- Pulled in two directions, Izzy Daniels must find a balance between his passion for boxing and his promise to help his friends with an intense double-Dutch jump-roping competition. Live-action, Jump In! combines themes of friendship, hard work, and individuality with energizing hip-hop music and impeccable choreography. This DVD was selected by the ALA's Association for Library Service to Children as a 2008 Notable Children's Video, and it is the winner of the prestigious Andrew Carnegie Medal, awarded by ALA for excellence in the field!
