  1. My daughter and I are great fans of Cary Grant movies. She is only 18 and thankfully has great taste in regards to the golden age of Hollywood movie making and the actors from that time. Cary Grant is one of our favorite actors and we own, Arsenic and Old Lace, Charade, An Affair To Remember and The Bishop's Wife. We recently watched and enjoyed Holiday with Grant and Hepburn, I thought Grant was hilarious when he did his acrobatics. Also we have enjoyed watching in the last month Houseboat, the Philadelphia Story, and My Favorite Wife. So it is not said lightly when we say this movie was irritating. My daughter was home sick one day from school recently and I put this movie in for her(and me). (By the way the only medicine she was on was ibuprofen for the cynically minded)
About thirty minutes into the movie we turned it off. The rate at which Hepburn talks is incredible and irritating; though this is a true screwball comedy, I found that the intelligence level of Hepburn's and Grant's characters belittling of their caliper of an actor. Though Grant plays a scientist that is so engrossed in his work that he is innocent in his social graces, I thought he could have done more with his implied intelligence to stand up to Hepburn's character.
By writing this I realize I am the minority of opinion, but I will not let my high regard for Grant and Hepburn as actors be my only reason I like this movie. It is possible we will watch this again in the future, if so I may update our opinion of the movie.

  2. "Bringing up Baby" is a very famous screwball comedy which was a box office failure on its release but has become a cult classic. Starring Katharine Hepburn in her first outright comedy, she is at the heart of why the film failed in 1938. In simple terms, there was just too much of her. Whilst spirited and entertaining, she is also irritating and ruthless and it is these qualities which detract from the film. Cary Grant is not simply pursued by this wilful heroine but positively harassed. Many audiences of the time did not take to Hepburn. The film is typical fast moving, fast talking Howard Hawks (the director) and the supporting cast are excellent but there is no sane character to ground the film and Hawks himself felt this was why it failed.

This 2 disk package contains some great extras. The print is excellent and Peter Bogdanovich provides an unusual commentary, quoting from Hawks himself and observing how the filming occurred, very much from a director's viewpoint. Bogdanovich remade the film of sorts as "What's up Doc" with Barbra Streisand and Ryan O'Neill in the 70s and that suffered from the same relentless heroine as this film does.

There are 2 really good documentaries included. The first is a TCM film on the life of Cary Grant. It would have to be the definitive work on the star with appearances by 3 of his wives providing great insight into his personality. The other documentary is one of a series about filmmakers, "The Men who Made Movies", cutting together a couple of interviews with Howard Hawks. It is particularly amusing to hear him comment on the French critics who have overanalysed his legacy when all he says is 'I did it because I liked it and if I did not like it, I did it until I did." It is great to hear the director skewer their pretentions.

Lastly, there is a technicolour short film from the Warner's vault and a very young Susan Hayward can be glimpsed poolside. The cartoon is a takeoff of Hollywood stardom with the heroine goose imitating Katharine Hepburn. The Howard Hawks trailer gallery is really a marketing exercise.

The DVD is excellent value but even better if purchased as part of the Classic Comedy set from MGM/Warners.

  3. The hilarity and hijinx are non-stop! Just when you think it can't get any funnier - it does! This has been a favorite of mine since I first saw it in the seventies! My sister and I were home from school with a bad case of the flu when this movie came on and we couldn't stop laughing all the way through! It was every bit as good as I remembered and the group of teens watching with me who swore they would hate it for sure since it was so "old" couldn't stop laughing either and had to cofess that it was a great movie !

  4. This is one of those movies I can watch over and over again. The chemistry between Grant and Hepburn creates a perfect foil for the snappy dialogue interspersed amongst somewhat silly but completely engaging situations.

Movies from this era understand that every character matters, that they add the spice to the movie. Hence, the constable, the gardener and even the dog add to the overall screwball energy. Movies today don't seem to pay that much attention to such small details.

Hepburn is delightful. In fact, the first time I gave it to my younger brother to watch he absolutely fell in love with her. Her distinctive voice works to her advantage here as the flighty but well meaning Susan Vance. Her incredible energy and innocent machinations add depth to a character which could've descended into stereotype and annoyance if not infused with Hepburn's considerable charm.

Grant is, of course, letter perfect in a role that turns his leading man suave reputation on its head. Instead of the smooth Cary Grant, we are pleasantly surprised by his David, a nerd and rather bumbling, which offers great opportunity to bump up against the insanity of Susan, though by the end of the movie one realizes that she's not only drawn him from his shell, but allowed him to recognize that the very ordered existance he had set up with the very controlled Miss Swallow was not the answer to his dreams as he once thought.

If you wish to watch a textbook, delightful, adorable and engaging screwball comedy, I highly recommend this one as the epitome of the genre. Not to be missed.

  5. I've seen this movie about 50 times and it NEVER stops being funny! It's clean, it's silly, it's just a GREAT laugh without any ugliness or violence like everything THINKS it has to have today to be good. Cary Grant is totally out of his "leading man" character in this movie and he's fantastic! This shows no matter what he's asked to play, he's up for the challenge. Katherine Hepburn is one of my all time favorites and as always, she's at the top of her game as a fast talking, often confusing (to poor Cary's character), EVER hysterical, rich girl who seems to have lost her tiger. One of my favorite movie scenes is when she loses the back of her dress and he has to walk her through a restaurant close to her back so no one can see her " accident!" This movie is defintely worth watching over and over especially if you've had a bad day in the "real world" and want to escape to a rip roaring good time that's BOUND to make you giggle and make that bad day melt away!

1 comments about Rhubarb.
  1. If you've never seen this 1951 screwball comedy, you have missed a real gem. A cat that can fight and beat dogs, an eccentric baseball team owner who dies and leaves the team to the cat (Rhubarb), the cat's guardian (Ray Milland) whose fiancee is allergic to cats, a group of gangsters who believe Rhubarb is hurting their earnings in the field of betting (the team begins to win after they believe Rhubarb is good luck), and the dead owner's relations who have been left penniless by Rhubarb usurping them in their inheritance all mix together to make great fun for cat lovers and baseball lovers alike. Nobody remembers this one very much because it is rarely televised and also because it was made by Paramount, a studio that tends to neglect its many classic films. In fact, the expression that the Joker utters in the 1989 Batman film : "Never rub another man's Rhubarb" refers to this film, although almost everyone assumed a more unsavory meaning for the expression. The baseball team in this film starts to turn their luck around when one batter pets (rubs) Rhubarb before a game. It really is a great family movie, but not many people at all have seen this one and thus few understand what the Joker was talking about.

This film is finally coming to DVD July 1. That is the good news. The bad news is that there will be no extras included.

  1. We bought this DVD after seeing it played at a local golf store. It immediately caught our eye and we stood there watching it. It's great. Everytime we watch it we get more out of it that we missed the first time. You need to watch it more than once to get all the information you need. We will watch it every spring before the first round of the season.

  2. Great Video. I got a hint so good that I won my club championship.

  3. DVD .Lots of information and humor.Good instruction for beginners.Recommend it to beginners and intermediate players.Has helpful advice on how to cure slicing , swing, too many things to list.

  4. This is a funny, helpful DVD. As a beginner, I love the doable strategies. I highly recommend this DVD - a blessing for people like me who want to play golf and don't know what to do or how to improve. Thanks Gary!!

  5. Great instructional program. I almost bought the book but am glad I went with the DVD. The DVD clearly shows how do do almost everything you need to get going and is entertaining as well. Gary is the best. I have never played golf and plan on taking a lesson or two before I hit the links. This was a great primer !!! I bet I will return to it many times.

5 comments about Keeping Mum.
  1. We were expecting a comedy, and kept waiting for this film to be FUNNY, but it was only barely so. It took almost the first whole hour just to set up the story's predictable comedic end, and felt like a 30-min sit-com padded out into a feature film to accommodate a big-name cast. Maybe it's too subtle for my wife and my tastes -- but we found it disappointing, not that funny, nor touching. Maybe some will find it enjoyable for its love-story theme and recognizable actors/actresses.

If you want more enjoyable comedies on similar themes (murderous elder women), try "Arsenic and Old Lace" (a classic) and John Water's "Serial Mom" (campy, over-the-top).

  2. This is the question raised by the film KEEPING MUM. Amazingly, this is a wonderful, sweet, romantic and funny film. We are treated to Rowan Atkinson in a surprising and sensitive lead performance. He is so much more than Edmund Blackadder, Inspector Raymond Fowler or Mr. Bean here. As much as we may love those other characters, his performance here can make us forget they ever existed. He plays the Reverend Walter Goodbody who is a tad on the dull, passionless side. That is until the arrival of the mysterious and charming Grace who is the families' new housekeeper. Grace hunkers down and works to repair this family who's lost it's way.

Richard Russo and Niall Johnson have crafted a completely captivating script. It's fascinating that a film with so many murders can be so gentle. Maggie Smith is a pure delight as Grace, a woman who has an interesting past, could there be a connection here?

This film is a pure delight and should be seen and talked about

  3. Dame Maggie Smith is the best actress of our century, proven so many times over the decades, this little movie is sweet, funny and shows how versitile this grand lady is in her acting :-) She's the best!!! Thank you, Dame Maggie Smith!!

  4. Keeping Mum is one of the best movies I've seen in a while and it has everything, murder, comedy, sex, you name it! Maggie Smith is perfectly cast as is Kristin Scott Thomas and let's not forget "Mr. Bean," who is equally as good in this delightful movie. Much better and far more entertaining than the usual shoot 'em up crammed with special effects movies that seem to be engulfing our cinemas. If you just want a fun movie with a story, yes a real story, and some laughs, Keeping Mum is one not to keep mum about!

  5. saw this advertised on T.V. and didn't know what to expect but, since I'm a fan of Ms. Smith I decided I'd give it a watch . Well, I found it was to be on 4 more times between then first time and the next few days . Did I watch again and again ? If home , you bettcha .

Rowan Atkins ...pleasantly surprised. I thought all he could do was Mr. Bean . I was wrong.

Kristin Scott Thomas ...great in her part of the negelected wife .

Patrick Swayze ...I was surprised to see him ...he did his job well as the letch .

    Ms. Smith ..... always a pleasure .

quite funny and I too recommend it. I won't go into story detail as it's been done and done again on here . so you decide .

5 comments about Happy Gilmore (Widescreen Special Edition).
  1. I was expecting a funnier movie. The only funny part was Gilmore hitting golf balls down the street into the neighbors windows. The rest of the movie was boring. The fight with Bob Barker is not bad but it I had seen it a couple of times in reviews so it lost its humor when I saw it in the movie. This movie is something you would want to watch when your drunk.

  2. I think I laughed once during the whole movie. It really surprises me how many people thought this movie was hilarious. I've only recently watched a couple Adam Sandler movies because I told a friend I didn't like Adam Sandler(I couldn't stand his routine on Saturday Night Live), so he challenged me to watch some.

He raved, and others of my friends raved, about Happy Gilmore. Well I watched it and I just thought it was so dumb. That idiotic voice he uses sometimes and beating everyone up...it was just so stupid to me. I would've stopped after the first 10 minutes, but I thought I owed it to my friend to finish the whole thing. Yuck! This was the typical Adam Sandler that I expected and do not like. Click was pretty good. I was surprised to like that one. But Happy Gilmore gets a big thumbs down from me. I guess I'm the odd ball since everyone else seems to love it. Ha.

  3. This is by far the best Adam Sandler movie, if you don't have this in your collection you are missing out.

  4. This is one of my all time favorite movies. It's even better now that it has HD quality.

  5. I actually went to a driving range and tried the running swing...I think the club went farther than the ball.

O yeah, the DVD review. This is one of the classics you can pull out and watch once or twice a year, and it doesn't get stale. The humor is never ending - from Gilmore's run-ins with Shooter McGavin, to his interactions with golf coach Carl Weathers, to the male nurse running a nursing home sweat shop where Happy's grandmother has to live because she can't pay her property taxes. The price is right after watching a pro-am tournament confrontation with Bob Barker.

Happy's outrageous behavior during the tournaments, not to mention that of some of the spectators, would actually make television coverage of golf way more fun to watch.

5 comments about The Legend of Bagger Vance.
  1. This is undeniably the greatest golf movie ever. The story is fantastic, involving the great depression, Bobby Jones and a war hero(played exceptionally by Matt Damon). However, the best part of this spectacular film is the acting. I love Will Smith as Bagger Vance, and with Matt Damon as the main protagonist and Charlize Theron as Ms. Idelle Envagordon, you simply cannot lose. If you love golf and movies, see this one.

  2. This is one of my favorite stories of all time. The story is well told, carries a powerful message and appeals to all age groups in all walks of life.

  3. If you like golf, romance, a wonderful musical score, a good story, a great cast, and a little fantasy, you'll love The Legend of Bagger Vance. The scenery is breathtaking. The story is uplifting and fun. I enthusiastically recommend Bagger Vance.

  4. This is a movie ostensibly about golf, but in actuality it is about life. A once superb golfer sinks to a life of drink and gambling. Challenged to participate as local color, he begins to practice his swing with a view of playing in a tournament with legendary Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen. From nowhere Bagger Vance appears, guides him to the mentality and courage to really take part. He rises to the occasion and when able to carry on alone, Bagger Vance disappears,

Beyond the obvious lesson about life and inner strength, the golf tournament itself is lovely, with the actor playing Bobby Jones particularly displaying a beautiful swing. Matt Damon does well as always.

  5. A delightful film about finding one's swing. A retired golfer is pushed back into the game even though he is convinced that he has lost his swing for good. A whimsical caddy comes along to show him how to find it, which is really a metaphor for finding oneself.

This movie is replete with spiritual metaphors that are sure to make you more aware of how one's path, or purpose, can only be found through the effortless ease of oneness with all.

Sit back, relax and allow yourself to sink deeply into this deeply creative and profound film.

  1. well i love this movie very much and i think that it is romantic, and comical at the same time. i love kevin costner anyway and think that this is a really good movie because of him

  2. If you like to play golf this movie is for you.
Kevin plays a washed up pro golfer trying to make a comeback.
when Rene Russo meets kevin she is trying to learn how to play golf.
Don Johnson is her boyfriend a pro golfer.
This is a great romanic comedy, A must see.
    I rate this DVD a 8 from 1to10!!

  3. Why is it good for the guys? Hits all the high and low notes about why golf is so addicting and so crazy making, and a bit about how to make the ladies happy too (tango never hurts)
Why is it good for the gals? Face it, those athletes are attractive, but this one is actually a real human being, but I won't give away the best part
Why is it good for laughs? Hmmm, can we all say Cheech together? PS - He does a helluva tango)
Why is it a great movie? 1. Plot 2. Tension 3. Casting (have I mentioned Kevin Costner? Have I mentioned Rene Russo? Have I mentioned Cheech Marin? Have I mentioned the rest of the wackos? And yes, Don Johnson is in it too, playing the sleeze y'all know he is) 4. Photography - If y'all ever wanted to know what west TX looks like, here it is, complete with armadillo 5. The Waffle House 6. It's a spa!! (Insert wading pool here)6. You can actually learn something about golf in this movie, if you want to 7. Kevin Costner (again - but hey - he's worth mentioning twice)
Rent this, buy it, but whatever you do, don't miss it.

  1. What a wonderful movie. The photography, the story, the character and acting. I am not a big golfing fan but the storyline is a "you can do it!" and entertaining for the whole family. Stephen Dillane does an excellent job, as usual. The animated golf ball to make you feel you are with the ball in the air is awesome. Wonderful creativity to move you through the game. And bringing a happy tear in the ending tops it off for me.

  2. This is an uncomplicated and pleasant movie that gives you a little bit of everything: Comedy, drama, class clash, romance, father/son struggle and a feel good ending. The acting was perfect by all, especially the kid caddy who deserves an oscar for his comical and endearing performance. He had us laughing out loud everytime he opened his mouth.

Great for kids too - there is no gratuitous sex, violence or langauge.

Even if golf isn't your "thing" (it's certainly not mine!), I think you will enjoy this emminantly likeable movie.

  3. This is one of those stories that makes you feel good, and is filled with inspiration and hope. This movie is great for almost any age, entertaining, and even a bit educational (economic-class discrimination, and common attitudes pertaining social-order at that time, are highlighted). Overall, a big thumbs-up for this movie -- a good, inspiring, family film that basically says "follow your heart".

  4. Good family entertainment and an inspiration for golf fans or players. Have watched it twice while my son, who has just taken up golf has watched it 4-5 times.

  5. Can a movie about golf be that good? I wondered that too--until I watched it. It is more than "that good." While it's no Chariots of Fire, it's has the same genes. Rich, inspiring, motivating, and even family-friendly. That's a rare combination. It's about virtues such as working toward a goal you believe in, tenacity, courage, and humility. It's about integrity. It won't necessarily make you want to play golf; but it may make you want to take the high road through life. Worth owning.

  1. I have seen many pieces of george's work and this is the best one yet. his monologuein this one is by far his greatest

  2. If you want to laugh in hysterics and relate to ordinary every day life, you will want to watch this video. Carlin does it again, as he describes words and phrases in relation to air travel and more. He is one of the best comedians of over two decades and after seeing Jammin' In New York (1992) for the first time, I do not at all regret this purchase. This one should be in any Carlin fan's, albeit, comedy-lover's video collection. Enjoy!

  3. This video is a perfect example as to why George Carling is known as such a great comedian. His opinions reflect your opinions you're yo scared to share. His acts are funny, as well as very intelligent. Every word he says we can relate to. When he performs, you know he is passionate in it. I'd reccomend this to evryone.

  4. This is one of my favorite Carlin DVD! I think if you like George Carlin and think he's funny, you should buy this DVD and you'll realize he's very very funny and a pure genious! I also suggest you pick up "Life is worth losing" Carlin's next DVD soon to be released. I don't get offended about anything Carlin says but in that one i got offended with like 2 things he said. Then he explained more and i just realized how stupid i was. Carlin is always making you step back as a human being to look at yourself and people as a whole. Look at how ignorant we sometimes act but at the same time talking about all the little things that we all do but never talk about. BUY THIS DVD i have 11 george carlin HBO specials and i never will regret paying a penny for them.

  5. I've been watching some of my Carlin DVD's again after his untimely death. It's sad to say goodbye to one of my favorite and one of the greatest comedians of all time. This set is one of his best and well worth checking out.

    R.I.P. George
    You will be missed.
