  1. As a sports nut I should be ashamed there were so many facts about Ernie Davis I knew nothing about. Yes, I knew he was the first African-American to win the Heisman--and he won it when the civil rights issue was at its zenith. And yes, I knew he died tragically young, but had no idea leukemia claimed him at age 23, before he even got to play a down in the NFL. And I did not know the Cleveland Browns, who drafted him to play alongside fellow Syracuse legend Jim Brown, retired his jersey number. But I know all of this now, thanks to watching THE EXPRESS, a tribute to Ernie Davis and his collegiate career. Sure, it's a little sappy and reeks of melodramatic cliches at times, but overall this is a very moving story about a young man of strong moral fiber fighting not only tacklers on the field, but a society determined to keep him at second class status.

THE EXPRESS features a superb cast, including Rob Brown in the lead role. Brown plays the young Syracuse superstar with calm demeanor and resolute determination; other actors, given the racial tensions of the setting, might have been tempted to go over the top, but Brown keeps the lid on. I thoroughly enjoyed Dennis Quaid as gruff head coach Ben Schwartzwalder--a man who must go on a personal journey of his own, as he discovers he's not as open and tolerant as he originally believes. And I really liked Darrin Dewitt Henson playing the proud, yet always defiant, Jim Brown. The football scenes--particularly the 1960 Cotton Bowl against an angry Texas team--are gritty and realistic; sports fans will enjoy the action, while everyone else will enjoy the humanity THE EXPRESS so aptly depicts.

  2. In the interest of full disclosure -- I am a football mom, a football fan, and a sports movie aficionada.

That said, this is a wonderful movie which I would rank right up there with "Remember the Titans," "We Are Marshall," and "Friday Night Lights." If you love any of those movies, as I do, you will love this one, too.

OF COURSE the director takes some liberties; that's called "dramatic license." But this film is powerful and inspirational -- and isn't that what most of us who like sports movies want to see? I'm buying it now for my college football player son to watch. Dennis Quaid and Rob Brown do an excellent job, as do many of the supporting players. And the football scenes are exciting -- I heard myself yelling at the TV as Ernie ran for a touchdown.

    But it -- I don't think you'll be disappointed.

  3. Received item very quickly and in excellent conditiion. Will definately order from them again!!

  4. Having attended SU and seen the Ernie Davis memorabilia around campus, I was always interested in his story. I felt that this movie gives a good portrayal of the university, Mr. Davis and the turbulent times during which he played. I give it two thumbs up and definitely 5 stars!

  5. This movie was the same price as in the stores but stores did not have it in blu ray only Amazon had it. My order arrived before Christmas in a timely manor. Only down side was the plastic container that protects the DVD was crushed luckily the DVD was intack and still worked. This was a gift so that was a downer. I did not view the movie so no movie review from me sorry.

  1. I think of Forrest Gump (1994) directed by Robert Zemeckis as a fantasy or a fairy tale set in the real world, and what a marvelous tale it is.
It's been 15 years since I saw the film for the first time with my 13-years-old son. We were impressed, touched, and moved by it equally. We laughed, we could not contain tears, and we lived together with the hero, the childlike, naive, and innocent Forrest Gump, the most unusual lead character you can think of. FG was a big hit when it was released, and it went on to receive 6 Oscars including for The Best Picture, Director, Best Actor, Best Visual Effects, and Best Screen Play. The film's Oscar status has made it one of the controversial choices among the film viewers. Some completely agree that FG deserved all its awards and its love. The others, and quite few to that believe that the film is totally overrated, sickly sweet, and it is nothing more than the American propaganda of mediocrity. They believe that the film's main idea is, follow the orders, do what you are told, and even if your intellect is low or almost non-existent, with a little bit of luck, you would achieve the success in your life and even would change the history by simply being at the right place in the right time. How wrong I believe they are. You can't think of Forrest Gump as a real person. He is a fairy tale character, or rather the embodiment of a human with no cynicism whatsoever, the candid, pure, innocent man who is not quick or witty but who knows bad from good and right from wrong and through whose eyes we see the historical events in the live of this country for about thirty years of the last Century. Forrest may not be an intellectual prodigy but he was led through life's hardships, by the inner moral compass if you will and he knows the very simple truths that he never misses - love and loyalty to his mother, his friends, the girl he loves and his Country.

The movie covers the look at America not only from Forrest's point of view. Another look at alternative, rebellious, counterculture America was very well presented through Jenny's life. Between them two, I believe the film's creators were able to show the changing times and changing face of this country. Technically and visually, the film is a marvel. The best songs of the time that were used in the film soundtrack are great and I don't mind them sound almost all the time -the more the better. Tom Hanks had achieved the very difficult task. His Forrest is simple but not laughable. He is a decent and very good man. It is not easy to create such idealistic character and to make him alive and sympathetic. There is not a single false note in Hanks' performance, and he absolutely deserves the Oscar.

When I rewathed the film recently, it touched me as deeply now as it did 15 years ago, and this is for me the sign of not just good but a great movie. And that's all I have to say about Forrest Gump.

  2. I can watch this movie a hundred times (probably have watched it at least 40 times). I love it. Every I know loves it. My husband imitates Forrest every now and then and gets people at ease and laughing. It is an American Icon!

  3. Robert Zemickis is no stranger to making films that go back in time. Whether it be through time travel in "Back To The Future" or through the accounts of a simple yet intellectual challenged man named Forrest Gump. In Forrest Gump Tom Hanks takes on the title role of a Alabama man who overcomes odds only to face more as he grows older. While many will give this movie 5 stars and critics and movie goers alike loved this movie, I will give you an honest opinion that differs. This movie will take you on an emotional rollercoaster with some laughs thrown in otherwise it would be unbearable. The visual effects are excellent and were state of the art at the time of the films release in 1994. This movie is very far from being a comedy though. It has some comedic elements but they are there only to neutralize the impending doom that comes to most of the characters throughout the movie. Forrest Gump also unabashfully reeks of a conservative message that the person who obeys and belives in God first and foremost, believes in his country no matter what and has morals no matter how unintelligent he might be will survive over everything and everyone else. At what price though one must ask?, When this movie and the main character must deal with abdonment from just about every character. Anyone who has experienced abdonment issues should be warned this movie will definetly bring these issues to a head. It is anything but a feel good movie. While the character Forrest Gump must be looked at as commendable and a good person you cant help but feel sorry for him ( not because he has a low IQ but rather because of all the people that leave his life). You simply walk away from this movie feeling bad overall yourself. I'm still confused as to how this movie could ever be labeled a feel good movie. It's tragedy is what it is. Here is a man of humble means and intelligence who goes on to experience the 50's through the 1980's in America, helps shape popular culture by pure accident, has run ins with president and celebrites, by pure chance, becomes successful in the shrimp industry with the help of a hurricane, by pure chance becomes finacially stable for life because he invest in Apple Computers, but what does any of this success mean when all the people he cares about leave him or die? This movie sends the message the opposite of what's really important. Forrest becomes rich in materialism and noteriety but is he really rich in spirit and personal life when everyone he cares about is gone? The movie winds down and concludes by trying to soften this blow with the revelation that Jenny who now lives in Savannah Georgia after years of promiscuness and drug use now has a son who is actually Forrest's very own biological child. This even comes off sad and confusing. And for me was the final straw for this movie having any redeeming qualities. Did Jenny really get pregnant by Forrest that faithful night she decided to hop into bed with him? Only to leave the next morning abdoning Forrest once more? The movie only hints that Jenny and Forrest had sex together. Yet by having a scene where Forrest and Jenny's son both tilt their heads the same way while watching tv we are to believe without a doubt he is Forrest son.Based on Jenny's track record for sleeping around the odds are pretty high that other guys she was with could had passed a gene on to the kid that makes him tilt his head. Titling ones head is not uncommon at all and most certainly doesnt give proof positive evidence that Forrest is the father. If Jenny found out she was pregnant soon after in her transient travel assuming she hadnt slept with anyone else how did she know for sure Forrest was the father? Regardless of Jenny's troubled past I would think if she cared at all about Forrest she would had contacted him before the baby was born to tell him it was his child. If she was sleeping around as the movie hints at throught out her adult life, then the story and movie leaves an unexplanied gap. How did Jenny known Forrest fathered the baby? The second scenerio which i'm afraid is even sadder, Is Jenny got pregnant sometime after she left Forrest's house by some other guy, and when she found out 6 years later she was dying she decided she could call upon good old dependable Forrest and use his lack of intelligence and good naturedness against him and tell him the kid is his knowing he would raise the child and would do anything for Jenny. Either way the motives of Jenny which go unaddressed is heartbreaking none the less. and in my opinion leaves her character with no redeeming qualites whatsoever. Afterall she could never give her love to Forrest his entire life, even though he offered unconditional love to her, but only when she is dying and needs her son to be raised by someone she knows is dependable does she give her love and self to Forrest. As the movie ends and Forrest is sending his "son" off to school just like his momma had done for him you get the sense of sadness. Not because things have come full circle, but because the movie leaves many things untied as to whether or not Jenny lied to Forrest about him being the daddy. And if she didnt lie then she selfishly prevented Forrest from knowing his only child until she was close to death. And robbed the boy of his first 5 or 6 years of life knowing his daddy. After watching this movie you will feel you invested 2 1/2 hours of your life only to feel cynical, angry and empty all at the same time. This is no American Classic it is an American Tragedy at best. For some reasons many years ago I opted not to go see this movie as a teenager even though my entire family and some friends all went into the theatre together for the same showing on opening weekend. As I went several rooms over to watch "Wolf" starring Jack Nicholson to a near empty theatre and thought I was missing out on pop culture history perhaps.. Years later I watched Forrest Gump numerous times on tv, cable and video, and realized I was glad I never saw it on the big screen. In closing for this review then I'll give some advice based on my experience. If your thinking about buying this movie, go buy Wolf on dvd instead. Trust me you'll be a hell of lot happier and not depressed afterwards.

  4. "Forrest Gump" (1994) is a classic, iconic American movie I think will live on. It's about a generation (about 30 years) from John F. Kennedy through the L.B.J. and Nixon administrations and beyond. Much of the early movie is comic. At the beginning and end of the movie we see Forest waiting and a feather floating through the air: life goes on, the circle of life persists and endures. Forrest, mentally challenged, learns to run like a house afire to get away from his enemies and his demons.
Through a groundbreaking process we see Forrest's image merged with the real images on newsreel footage of the American presidents he meets. He isn't greatly impressed by famous people, fame for himself or money. He's loving, extremely loyal, kind, gentle, naïve, trusting, courageous, and a lot smarter about life than most of the people around him.
Tom Hanks, the quintessential American movie star of the last thirty years, does a fantastic job as Forrest. The movie is full of adages and sayings (like "stupid is as stupid does") that Forrest repeats and lives by. He and his mother (Sally Fields) have a deep connection, and he has one love in his life, his childhood sweetheart, Jennie. She's a sixties love child who deeply disappoints Forrest by becoming part of the 60's and 70's drug culture, but their love triumphs.
Because of his ability to outrun everybody, Forest Gump becomes a football star and an accidental hero in the Vietnam War saving Bubba Blue, the shrimp fisherman he's befriended. He also saves Lieutenant Dan Taylor (Gary Sinise) who eventually becomes his business partner and life-long friend. He goes into Bubba's shrimp business after the Vietnam War, and he becomes successful along with Lieutenant Dan.
The movie reaches into pathos, but it can be excused for those excesses. It's a classic. Life just happens to Forrest, everything is accidental, not due to his planning, but he endures as an American icon.

  5. I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED TOM HANKS IN ANYTHING HE DOES. FORREST GUMP IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES. WOULD BE NICE TO FIND A SIMPLE MAN LIKE FORREST. GREAT MOVIE.

  1. Item was received quickly. It was in great condition. Bought it for my son, no complaints.

  2. The movie came in brand new with no scratches or anything but the dvd box did have a crack on the side but it was nothing serious.

  3. I ordered the Love & Basketball DVD from iNetVideo. The first new DVD I received was lose in the DVD case and got scratched during shipping. I emailed them and they mailed another new one to me asap. That's awesome customer service and I will do business with this company again.

  4. Eleven-year-old Quincy doesn't know what to make of Monica, a girl who can outplay any of the guys on the neighborhood basketball court. Soon he is infatuated with her and, much to his surprise, she is eager to become closer to him. Best friends all throughout the following school years, the pressure for each to be recruited by college basketball coaches brings them closer together and their love blooms beyond friendship. This movie shows the real love of basketball. Basketball is more than a sport and you could see that with this movie. This movie displays the hardships of becoming a basketball pro such as losing friends and lovers.

  5. It's a true statement that there are a lot of these kinds of love stories out there. This brand of movie is made almost every week, but there are few films that (for me at least) are able to transcend their own genre as well as `Love & Basketball'. Sure, there are avenues of this film that don't sit as well with me as others, but the bulk of this film is fantastic, and Sanaa Lathan's performance alone is well worth the price of admission.

Monica and Quincy grew up as neighbors. They have always had one of those quarreling sibling relationships, mostly due to their common interest; basketball. Quincy's father was a pro-ball player, and so his future seems predestined, while Monica's drive and dedication make her a better player, and an unlikely rival. As they grow up they stay friends, even if they are constantly at odds, until they realize that they are less like siblings and more like lovers. Basketball continues to divide them, as they split their focus and find that it is conquering them instead of them conquering it.

While much of the storyline feels rather `familiar', there is something special about this film.

For me, it is undeniably Sanaa Lathan. This girl is amazing, and this film marked the start of my personal love affair with her. She is not only physically stunning, but her talent as an actress is undeniable here. She is flawless as she balances Monica's life goals with her actual life, never taking away from her pained curiosity or her hearty dedication. The prom scene is especially memorable as her jealousies and insecurities are made subtly obvious. Her on-court scenes are filled with an intensity that only comes from a complete adoration of the game, and the strife she endures at the hands of her oppressive (albeit loving) mother is completely believable thanks to Lathan's remarkable understanding of her character.

    Oscar, you should be ashamed!

I'm less impressed with Omar Epps, but he has never really been anything more than a pretty face to me. I haven't really seen his talent but I understand why my sisters love him. He has a genuine quality in scenes, but mostly he seems to be playing a character instead of playing a person (if that makes sense to you).

A few `clichés' aside, `Love & Basketball' is an extremely good film that feels fresh and exciting and beautifully balances out the many aspects of the film that make it so wonderful. The script is rich enough (despite some generic relationship issues) to allow us to really get to know Monica and Quincy, on and off the court. Between their love life, home life and work life, `Love & Basketball' understands how to give each side of these characters a life all its own. Yes, the film is far more concerned with Monica than Quincy, and it shows, but that doesn't mean that Quincy's character becomes a stock character. This may be Monica's story, but Quincy is a BIG part of it.

Take it from someone who is not a fan of sports or really of sports based movies; this is a movie you really need to see!

  1. This Blu-ray is worth the price! At first, I debated purchasing it because it didn't show the entire Super Bowl but this is better. It tells a great story going game by game with great commentary from Jim Henderson and WWL radio. I was happy when they showed us winning and still a bit upset when they showed the 3 game losing streak. I choked up a bit (again) when they showed Hartley nail the winning FG in the NFC Championship game.

The story is told from a definitively Saints and Who Dat Nation perspective. It's like no one else matters, not even Peyton Manning, he's an after thought (in the film). They do a good job of capturing the spirit of the Saints, season, each game and the Super Bowl.

If you are a Saints fan this is a must buy and if you're not you'll still enjoy a great film.

  2. I just got this title in on Tuesday, and in the two days that have elapsed I've watched this blu-ray disc 3 times already.

It's really well written, and is split up into 3 main segments. The first is a prologue that profiles the history of the team (briefly) and sets up the Katrina and post-Katrina struggles of the city and the team. The next segment includes a significant amount of high definition highlights from the regular season and playoffs. They don't skimp on the highlights either - they do a great job of telling the story of each individual game, supported by lots of highlights and game film with the unforgettable calls of Jim Henderson and Hokie Gajan of WWL Saints Radio.

The last segment highlights the Super Bowl. A good amount of player interviews put the game's significance front and center, and you are then immersed in Super Bowl XLIV. After a brief conclusion, Saints fans are treated to scenes from the Super Bowl victory parade on "DAT Tuesday" during "Lombardi Gras."

There are a decent amount of special features - highlighting Jabari Hargrove, Sean Payton, Deuce McAllister, and Jeremy Shockey. There's also significant Saints coverage and interviews from Super Bowl Media Day.

All in all, it's worth every penny.

  3. They start off with a little back ground on the saints and then head into the magical 2009 season, giving highlights of each game. The highlights are edited so it feels like a watching a movie. They spend much more time on the playoff games and the Superbowl. The entire movie is narrated giving it the documentary feel. The special features are really nice too, most of them are not longer the ten min, but there well worth watching. It looks great on blu-ray and sounds good. All in all I was impressed with presentation of the season and what highlights they showed.

  4. Shattered expectations are tough to take. I thought I was going to get to see the whole game.
This would be a very nice DVD with all the extras if only it had the whole SUPER BOWL game included like I mistakenly thought it did. If you want highlights ONLY of more games than just the Super Bowl, then this DVD does a nice job of delivering that. If you want to be able to watch the whole game, don't waste your money; cause this DVD doesn't have it. VERY DISAPPOINTED.

I guess I'll try iTunes like a commenter suggested to the other 1 star reviewer. Don't waste your money here like I did unless you're happy with nothing but highlights. I'm not. I was on track for a great Saturday. This is almost as disappointing as if the Saints had lost. But they didn't! Who Dat?

  5. I was very disappointed in the DVD--I bought the best games of the season and the NFC Champioship game both of which included whole games, so why is the Super Bowl just highlights? I have seen this DVD advertised and in no way is it stated that the game is not part of the DVD--very misleading.

  1. I have loved Lucas for twenty years. So glad I found it on Amazon. It has such a good message and fun actors. Loved it.

  2. The DVD has both full-screen & wide-screen editions on opposite sides. Video quality is what you'd expect from an 80s movie. There are no extras, but I didn't expect any. Disc is in a keeper case (not the half-paperboard variety). The movie, itself, is exactly as I remembered; a surprisingly confident nerdy kid tries his best to catch the eye of a girl. You can't help but like almost everyone in this movie. All-in-all, just a light, feel-good movie that doesn't become unbelievable.

  3. I ordered "Lucas" to enjoy with my 11yr old grandson, who's going out for football next year. The movie offers a lot of "messages" that I think got through: respect for others, respect for those a little different than ourselves, not following the pack, etc. We had great discussions about the characters afterward.

  4. what a good movie, really sad that he had all these problems during his youth and then the 80's were gone and he tried a come back but everything went right to dvd. Now he is longer with us, I just wonder what they will say about this movie and some of the other movies he made
Good movies never die, so i say get this movie it rocks

  5. The death of Corey Haim prompted me to come and order this DVD. It was one of his best performances; thinking of it made me sad that he never found his footing as an actor during his adult years.

I realize that this is supposed to be my review and not Roger Ebert's, but I can't help but quote a couple of things he said. About Haim's performance in "Lucas": "He creates one of the most three-dimensional, complicated, interesting characters of any age in any recent movie. If he can continue to act this well, he will never become a half-forgotten child star, but will continue to grow into an important actor. He is that good."

Ebert listed it as one of the top 10 films of 1986. I agree with that assessment. It's a quiet, well-written, beautifully acted movie.

    RIP, Mr. Haim.

  1. Simple: good story, good acting, and well done. Doesn't matter if you like football, this is just a very good family movie.

    Watch it!!

  2. THIS IS NOT JUST A CHICK FLICK! (ALTHOUGH PISTOL PACKING SANDRA IS GREAT IN THIS MOVIE) I CANNOT WAIT TO BUY THIS MOVIE! WELL WORTH THE $$$ YOU WILL SPEND ON IT. THE STORY HAS A WONDERFUL THEME TO IT. IT IS A MOVIE THAT YOU GET UP FROM WATCHING AND KNOW YOU WILL BUY IT!!!!!

  3. I remember looking forward to this movie and being utterly disappointed on the way out and the reasons are many. The story had potential, but the director chose to turn this into a made for Lifetime Channel Tv movie. All directors manipulate the audience to an extent, but the Blind Side does not allow the audience to think at all. We clearly know who is a big bad meanie and we clearly know who the saints with halos are. And there are no in betweens.

Take for instance the portrayal of football itself (I was really looking forward to some insight into the sport of football in this movie, but my little sister seems to know more about the sport than the director does). The coach of the OTHER team was a devil and all his players were little demons. Michael's team were the good guy underdogs that you MUST root for unless you are a communist. And Michael shoving his meanie nemesis all the way down the field and over the fence? Why was this scene necessary? If someone were to actually do that (and they never did or will), they would be ejected and suspended. And even if it were to happen, a total brawl would ensue on the field. Was the director trying to get a laugh? That would be the way I would expect to see football portrayed on an episode of I-Carly, not in an Oscar nominated film.

And at the end of the film, do we really understand who Michael Oher is? All we get is a caricatured sketch of him. The film was all about Leigh Ann, and not Michael. Some have argued the focus of the film is about Leigh Ann's good deed, and that is all good and fine, but I would like a bit more depth to Michael's character. That was who I came to the movie to see. And I am not totally willing to coronate Leigh Ann and her husband as total saints yet either; I believe that there was more to the NCAA investigation than we were led to believe. But once again, the director was unwilling to let the audience think here. The audience was clearly TOLD the NCAA was the big meanie. All black and white and no grey is the EASY way out.

Finally, I do not believe Sandra Bullock deserved an Oscar for her performance in this film (or any other film she has been in for that matter). Her performance was pretty much exactly what you would expect; very little subtlety or nuance. She was pretty much happy, mad, and sad everywhere the script told her. Not a bad performance, but if one saw all the other female leads that were nominated, Bullock's performance was easily at the bottom of the bunch. Heck, even a few that WEREN'T nominated were better. Amy Adams, for instance, turned in a FAR superior performance in Julie and Julia. I guess if Taylor Swift can get a Grammy for album of the year, we really can't be surprised if the Academy hands out an undeserving award or two.

  4. "The Blind Side" is a wonderful, unforgettable masterpiece that's destined to become a perennial holiday classic.
Everyone in your family--from youngsters to the older--should be enthralled with this magical movie experience brought to us by John Hancock.

As writer and director, Hancock has gathered together a once-in-a-lifetime cast who enwrap you in a family so real that you feel like a member. Based on real life, the Tuohys of Tennessee find and nurture a homeless young black youth, Micahel Oher. They eventually adopt him and consider him a full-fledged member of their Christian family. They're also responsible for his becoming a multi-million dollar football star at Ole Miss.

That's the heart of this story that will have you laughing one minute, and trying to choke back your tears the next.

As the pistol packing, brassy Mother Lion, Leanne Tuohy, Sandra Bullock absolutely electrifies, giving the performance of a lifetime. Her Academy Award performance puts her firmly in the pantheon of movie greats. Like her legendary predecessors, Bette Davis and Vivien Leigh, Bullock has the magical spark that connects directly with the viewer and when she confronts a gang of thugs who threaten her newly adopted black son, Michael Oher, the hair on the back of your head tingles when Bullock gets right in their faces and spits": "You threaten my son, you threaten me!" Looking fabulous with her new blonde do, wearing knock-out fashions and exuding electrifying charisma, Bullock brings us an unforgetabble heroine to love forever.

Most of us can barely remember those actresses who've recently snared the Best Actress honor (quick, who was that French actress who won last year for "La Vie En Rose") Sandra Bullock, however gives us a fiery, fabulous heroine that we'll be discussing and thinking about for years to come.

This is hardly to say that Bullock is the only one who did great. Hancock's entire cast--from the extras in the background, the school faculty, the athletes, the young performers in Michael's welfare housing projects--were all extraorinary.

The Tuohy family became like people you'd love to have as neighbors: Tim McGraw is the handsome, genial head of the Touhy family and owns a chain of Taco Bell restaurants that make him a multi-millionaire. His two children played briilliantly by Lily Collins and the scene-stealing, impish Jae Head, enhanced this story-book family.

The Blind Side should have won the Oscar for Best Picture but many of the big city movie critics hated it. New York Magazine was especally notorious for its steady stream of sarcastic observations about Sandra Bullock and the movie itself. Maybe it's staggering box office ($255 million domestically as of 3/14/2010) was a deterrant. Numerous other critics were aghast that Sandra Bullock was actually winning awards for her role over Meryl Streep.

Bullock proves herself to be Hollywood's greatest star. She's a brillant commedienne (i.e, The Proposal, Miss Congenialty) and now with The Blind Side, a brillant dramatic actress. She's going to be around for a long, long time and now her millions of fans are wondering what her next triumph will be?

  5. The Blind Side is a great family movie filled with drama, warmth and humor! Sandra Bullock gives a super performance! Good casting.
