5 comments about If You Didn't Bring Jerky, What Did I Just Eat?: Misadventures in Hunting, Fishing, and the Wilds of Suburbia.
  1. It's been a long time since a book brought tears of laughter to my eyes but Bill's book did just that. He is an example of all of us, if we would be honest enough to admit it that is.
When I read about his bowhunting in bedroom slippers it really hit home, I made it to the driveway once wearing mine.
I would recommend this book to anyone who needs a laugh, but be prepared to read it once you begin you will not want to put it down. The only sad part about my experience was when the book came to an end; I sure hope Bill has another in the works.

  2. A great book. Very well written. I teach journalism and English and use examples from this book often. Poetic, poignant, and just plain fun.

  3. I have been reading Bill Heavey's column in Field and Stream for years, and he has never failed to entertain me. His book has not disappointed me, it is packed with the same brand of tongue-in-cheek humor. If you are an outdoorsman, you willl definately relate to Heavey's soul baring escapades. I highly recommend this book

  4. I'm serious, I made a mental note of the only laugh in the book. In an introduction it is said Pat Mcmanus goes for the belly laugh while this author goes for a chuckle. Chuckle is apprently a codeword for humourless. The author goes into more tecnical details about hunting and fishing gadgets than Pat does so if you like reading about junk to carry on a hunt this will be a plus. But if your are looking for a humorous take on the outdoors look elsewhere.

  5. Stumbled across this after reading one Bill's columns in Field & Stream & having a friend tell me he had a book. Have been reading a story or two each day...makes a great bathroom book. My favorite is the one I read yesterday about Bill taking his preschool age daughter "hunting" (helping him scout for deer sign) and then coming home & watching big buck videos together. Kind of reminded me of myself when I was little. All in all it's a great book for anyone who loves the outdoor lifestyle.

5 comments about Fifty Places to Fly Fish Before You Die.
  1. There are a lot of places i realy wish i could go fly fishing. Unfortunatly, there are only a few select places that are affordable. and those that are doable just don't have much description convincing me to go. if there was only some background info or narrative this book would go be a much more useful guide.

  2. nice book, but i would like to see more pictures of the different species!! also some maps to locate some places would be great...I live in argentina and the 3 places chosen are great, although you must be a millionaire to fish rio grande!! Fortunately we still have a lot of places here to fish for free.
I would rather see a book where they tell where to fish and spent little money (as an example the book tells you that i f you want to fish rio traful, the only way to do it is going to arroyo verde lodge and thats no true!! you can do it for free if you want..there are accesses by foot or you can reach it by the lake, an there are other private places much more cheaper, but why they dont describe that??). Do not tell me where i can go spending $ 5000 a week because its obvious i could go everywhere with that money!!!!

  3. A wonderful book for the fly fishing enthusiast. A keepsake for all fishermen. A must have for the coffe table!

  4. This is a beautiful book, one that is smartly designed and packaged, pleasant to leaf through and to handle, but somewhat lacking in substance.

Here's an example of the kind of lapse that would have been caught had the book been written for hard core fisherpeople. We read, "The South Island of New Zealand is awash with beauty and teeming with trout". And then a few sentences later, "The South Island trouting experience is certainly one of quality rather than quantity. A majority of the rivers simply don't support large numbers of fish. Some of the most fishy-looking water you can imagine may not contain a single fish".

So is the South Island "teeming with trout" or is it not?

Ultimately it doesn't really matter. This isn't a book about information - it's a wonderful collection of vicarious fishing trips. I'd never flicked a fly rod when I got it, yet I was engrossed, transported, and in the end captivated.

The settings range from intimate, "Brown Trout on Letort Spring Run", to grand, "Steelhead on the Dean River". Along the way we encounter tarpon, bonefish, snook, pike, redfish, all manner of salmon and trout, and even something known as a giant trevally that lurks in the waters off Christmas Island.

And the photographs are stunning. I only wish there were one for every destination.

Recommended to wile away a winter's afternoon while waiting for the ice to break.

  5. It was a very good quality book, very informative. It is NOT a full informative planing trip gide, but rather a good place to start planing your own trips.

5 comments about Fisherman's Ultimate Knot Guide.
  1. I'm sold on this waterproof plastic card concept. Great knot illustrations, too. Amazon.com also sells this author's ROPE KNOTS printed on plastic cards - just do a search for PROKNOT and you'll get 14 essential rope knots on a 6 page waterproof plastic fan pack. I keep both on my boat but could just as well use the PROKNOT cards for camping or tying stuff on the car. These cards rock!

  2. Fisherman's Ultimate Knot Guide is a great little guide worth the money takes up very little room and keeps the rust out when it's been awhile since you tied those knots.

  3. I have used the tool and find it very helpful. Good price. Fast shipping.

  4. Buy it, use it, love it; enough said.

  5. This is a great starter to intermediate knot tying manual. 'Ultimate' might be stretching it but it's close. Definitely adequate! You would 'the man' if you mastered every knot in this manual! The envy of every other deckhand for sure! ciao, Scott

5 comments about What Fish Don't Want You to Know: An Insider's Guide to Freshwater Fishing.
  1. I got this as a birthday present for my mother, who is an art teacher. She likes to go fishing, but is obviously a novice. This book was supposed to teach you everything you need to know about fishing, and after talking to her about it, it certainly does! The best thing about this book is that it is easy to read, and enjoyable. Unlike a manual or guide, this book is fun to read. The author connects to the reader through stories and jokes, while at the same time providing vital information that only a fishing guru can provide. My mother read this book very quickly and easily, and is actually reading it again out of enjoyment. She always tells me how much she likes it and what a great book it is. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for good advice on everything concerned with freshwater fishing, or for anyone looking for a gift for someone they know who likes fishing. This book will turn them into experts! The book has wonderful pictures and a very easy-to-read layout. I am very satisfied with the purchase, and I know you will be too. A+. 5 stars!

  2. Great stories to read but as a guide for real fishing information that translates to more fish..... Not really....

  3. Before I bought this book, I've been fishing about 8-10 times. I really don't care for fishing because I'm so bad at it. But this year I decided to give it a try again but this time I wanted to research the sport instead of going out there like clueless. To get me started, I bought two fishing books: this one and another rather thick book.

What I like about this book is that it gives you the most important info you need to make you a decent fisherman. For now, I don't want a book that gives me a PhD in fishing. I just want to have a decent clue when going out, and that's exactly what this book did for me. It's not at the Dummy level nor is it at the pro-fisherman level either... right in the middle where I wanted things. Meanwhile, my other thick book sits there collecting dust. Maybe I'll get to that other book sometime, but for now this book has given me enough to try out for several outings.

  4. I have been fishing all my life and was to surprised to actually find a few helpful hints in this book. The personal stories are entertaining and I could relate to some, especially early childhood memories of fishing with my dad.

  5. This book was an excellent insight into how fish think. It was fairly introductory, and there was probably a lot that a seasoned fisherman would already know, but I found it enjoyable. It seemed to have a lot of info about protecting the sport, and had somewhat of an "us versus them" feel when talking about people who were against fishing. A fun, quick read for anybody who wants to know a little bit more about fish and their habits, some strategies for catching them, or if you just want to get away into your own head when the weather isn't cooperating for you to get out on the water.

5 comments about Outdoor Navigation With GPS: Hiking, Geocaching, Canoeing, Kayaking, Fishing, Outdoor Photography, Backpacking, Mountain Biking.
  1. This book was just what was needed to get going with a new geocaching device.

  2. I've been a basic-feature gps user for several years, but decided it was time to figure out the 80% of the buttons/features which were greek to me. This book was perfect for the task. I read it cover to cover (simultaneous with testing features on my newly aquired rino) in just a few hours -- time well spent. Text is sufficiently technical and detailed to fully capture the information, but written in an interesting and simple manner. I especially appreciated the correlation with compass and paper mapping techniques and the information on what to do if/when the gps unit fails (batteries dead, dropped and broken, etc.). Also agree with the reminder to "put away the electronic toy" and watch where you're going! After all, we go into the wild in order to see the wild -- not view it on a 2 inch screen.

Only suggestion for future editions: some of the illustrations were too small to be maximally helpful. Since "the big picture" plus small details are both necessary to truly follow the examples related to paper mapping techniques, I would have preferred seeing the full map view (as is) plus a "blow up" illustration of the details.

  3. Just what I needed to get started with my Garmin 76csx. Good price and arrived on time.

  4. Now in an updated second edition, Outdoor Navigation with GPS is a no-nonsense guide to basic GPS navigation skills, useful for all kinds of outdoor activities ranging from hiking, mountain biking, and fishing to geocaching, outdoor photography, canoeing/kayaking, and any other activity involving the negotiation of wild terrain. Written in a jargon-free style accessible to readers of all backgrounds, chapters cover how to program waypoint coordinates and reach them, prepare for and recover from disaster, read topographic maps, and much more. Black-and-white photographs and diagrams illustrate this "must-have" for outdoorsmen in the modern age.

  5. As a newhbie to GPs, I found this book, Outdoor Navigation With GPS: Hiking, Geocaching, etc. easy to read and understand.
All aspects of GPS useage are covered fully and concisely.

  1. I recommend this book for the beginning angler. Well written and very informative. The book covers all elements needed to enjoy fishing and to catch fish. Love the book!!!

  2. I feel that it is my duty to help bring down the review score that this book is getting. some people are obviously mistaking this book for another. The mini is a waste of paper. A book like this is an abuse of freedom of speech. How should a book about "how to fish" not give any information on how to fish. Robbery is against the law; and that's what this is. The best part of this book is the advice of bringing a sandwich with you. You'll need it when you catch no fish. I suggest getting any other book on the subject if you wish to learn about tying knots, casting, bait, etc. The purchaser of this book is sure to be dissatisfied at any cost. I guess there is a lot to be said in the title "Fishing for DUMMIES (MINI)".. Maybe I was a "little stupid" to buy it.

  3. Terrible. Will not help you begin to fish. Poor content, organization, and editing. Bookbuying for Dummies. Dont waste your money.

  4. Wow! When they say "mini", they mean Mini. This book is tiny. The content however, is actually fairly good. It's a very quick read. The print is actually not too bad for the physical size of the book. It had mostly fairly basic information, but the size would allow for it to be thrown in a tackle box or fishing vest if you wanted. Again, just the basics, but worth the price. My wife thinks it's very "cute" too.

  5. I originally bought this book for my boyfriend, but I love fishing and know very little about the tricks of catching a fish. I have learned so much about lures and fish and how they think in order to catch fish better. This book is awesome! I totally recommend this book to any "family fisherman" if they want to know more.

  1. Last summer i introduced my wife to fly fishing. I decided she needed a guide to knots. I chose this one. She is using it. but i found myself consulting it from time to time so i got myself one as well.

  2. This is a handy booklet to keep in your flyfishing equipment. The leader info is excellent though I found the diapgrams to tie a few of the noes a little confusing. My major beef isthat it is described as a "streamside guide" it should then come with a waterproof case or something to protect the pages. I use a small ziplock bag to keep mine dry

  3. I thought this was a good guide to keep with me - it is fairly straight-forward, and easy to follow, as well as being easy to reference quickly.

  4. great reference for a great price. I've been learning how to fly fish and it's extremely valuable for a person who never learned how to tie knots. It's broken down into line backing, backing to line, line to leader, leader to tippet, tippet to fly. very specific and very easy...

  1. For very good information tool for the novice flyfisherman and it's even a good reference guide for the more experienced flyfishing individual.

  2. Nice, all about this fishing method. A lot of graph and fotos.
There is a better choice off orvis that came in hard cover

  3. Good General Guide, good reference materials but not that helpful if you are already and experience fly fisherman. I did not really learn anything new. But good book anyway.

  4. My father, has been an avid flyfisherman for 20+ years and we got this book for him. It was well written and demonstrated many great techniques that many dont know about. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to learn more or who is just beginning to fish.
    Thanks for the great product.

  5. Great book very informative, incredible pictures and drawings, very easy to follow.
Highly recommended to all fly fishermen.

5 comments about The L.L. Bean Ultimate Book of Fly Fishing (L. L. Bean).
  1. Well written with great illustrations. Perfect aide to learn to cast. Could use a bit more detail on how to fish different types of flies, but great all-round guide.

  2. Bought this book before fly fishing for the first time. Great pictures and text. goes into detail that I won't "outgrow" for a long time.

  3. This is a composite of three previously published L. L Bean guides: fly-fishing, casting, and fly tying. The first part is Whitlock's book on fly-fishing and is one of the best (the other being Rosenbauer's Orvis book) introductions to the sport of fly fishing. The Whitlock illustrations are always great, and the information is top-notch. You will find out everything you need from fly lines to fly rods to knots to basic flies.

Add the other two parts and this is an excellent overall view of all three areas. Because of the comprehensive approach, it is one of the best "how to" books on fly-fishing available.

Don't be fooled by the "L.L.Bean" title--the book does not promote their products. It is a top-rated introduction to fly fishing, casting, and tying.

  4. This was a reccommended book for any flyfisherman. I bought the Orvis and i just had to have the L.L. Bean book too. Both are great products. L.L. Bean has outdone themselves what a great book for any fisherman. This is a father's Day gift and i can't wait to give it to my dad. He will love it.
    Thanks,
    Chase

  5. Great result when you use a buying catalogue like Cabelas, Orvis or L.L. Bean and combine it with the information of this guide... they should make an spanish version

  1. John Gierach has written another book for the fisherman, and like his others, this one is an instant classic.
Reading Gierach is both entertaining and enriching, as this trout bum has paid his dues and spent a lifetime in felt soled shoes. A classic, a fun read, and perfect for any fisherman or sportsman with an affinity for the outdoors.

I bought this book while on my way to fish John Gierach's home stream. I bought the book at Mike Clark's shop in Lyons, and while there, John Barr walked in. John Gierach's books have brought me much joy, and someone I most certainly look up to and aspire to be like some day. I highly recommend this book as your first Gierach book or just another one in your collection.

  2. Yet another well-written book from one of the best writer's in the fly fishing arena. It's like intellectual bubble gum for the fly fishing mind. Easy to read and lasts a long time. Insightful.

  3. If you like Gierach, you will like this one. He just keeps doing it. As usual, he is funny, thoughtful, interesting, entertaining. More than just fishing stories, but mighty good fishing stories nonetheless.

  4. This book is great. I love his writing style. The stories in this book are catchy and informative. However, I noticed most of the material comes from articles and excerpts from Fly Rod and Reel and I think other books. Not sure if it was all the chapters because I haven't kept up with his other publications. It would have been nice to read a book with chapters that haven't been published already. Regardless, still a quality book and a delight to read.

  5. Gierach keeps pumping out the kind of material that takes you to the stream with him, but also challenges the reader to feel as deeply about the experience as he does. For any flyfisher who has a "...home river" or enjoys the challenge of new water, making new friends, or watching nature unfurl its majesty before your mind's eye, "Fool's Paradise" is a book you'll thoroughly enjoy.
