  1. Please - a real figure skaing fan wants to see skating not Michael Feinstein hamming it up. Very disappointed in this DVD. This seems to be a trend - guess the real fans aren't protesting enough!!

  2. Scott Hamilton is a genius on ice & this shows that to perfection. I love the others he has picked to join him as well. I think ice skating is a beautiful sport to watch & I love it.

  3. I wish I could get my money back on this. It was all about entertainment and the pianist whose personality I found grating. A showy night club like atmosphere, not at all what I expected with fine skaters and classical music. The camera kept cutting back to the musician and the whole mood was Las Vegas like and not world class skating.

  4. The DVD would not play on my DVD player but only on my computer. In addition, you can tell it was spliced because of the poor video playback. I would not recommend this DVD.

  5. I LOVE Scott Hamilton. The reason I love to watch Scott is because he is so full of energy and skates fun-to-watch programs. I was so disappointed in this DVD. I did not know who Michael Feinstein was, MOST of the music was very slow. If you like slow music, you will enjoy this dvd. But if you like high energy skating, you will be dissappointed.

  1. So many people are saying "It's a great message - following your dreams." Sure, that is a good message. But when the Disney writers teach young girls that it's "fantastic" to be an ice skater and nerdy/geeky/boring to be scholastic, then we have a problem. It's movies like these that tell girls that they should focus on dresses, makeup, and hair (which is fine if their life isn't consumed by it...) and dream to be world-famous figure skaters. But getting a full scholarship to Harvard to study physics? Why would any girl in her right mind throw that away to pursue a silly dream where you'll be famous for a couple years and then everyone will forget about you??!!!

Girls need more messages showing how they can excel in math/science/engineering especially if it's obvious they have a talent for it. They can pursue something more worthwhile than skating around on the ice.

Parents - don't buy this for your daughter.

I gave it two stars instead of one because it was kind of fun to watch... I just don't agree with the message.

  2. I AM TAKEN PHYSICS AND THERE WERE SOME ERRORS IN THIS MOVIE FOR EXAMPLE: At the party, Casey states that "velocity times momentum equals acceleration". This is false; velocity multiplied by momentum yields only mv2, which is just kinetic energy multiplied by two. This isn't an expression for acceleration, and is not fundamentally meaningful. In fact, force divided by mass equals acceleration.

  3. I purchased this film for my 6 and 8 year old neices and they really enjoyed it. It's a great family movie with a positive outcome.

  4. Fast delivery. Excellent condition. Good story. A nice relief from all the blood, gore and sex that seems to be only thing they film any more.

  5. I bought this used for my daughter, remembering how it was from years ago. After time has passed, I still appreciated the message in this film: that being WHO YOU ARE, despite parental expectations and categorization by athletic and academic ability, peer grouping, and stereotyped career/life paths is most important. Making yourself happy with who you are while still striving to make the best of yourself is a great message for coming-of-age and grade-school tweens who will realize that being smart and athletic are not mutually exclusive. Defying the narrow columns that young adult life sorts kids into is a great idea. I appreciated the main actress and her down-to-earth, positive, and mature perspective on her goals and challenges. She went for it, even if she didn't expect amazing success. The fantasy part of exceeding all expectations is a bit off, but this again is a movie for children, not an academy award category film. My eight year old will love it.

  1. It is a quick moving movie with great camera shots. The story line is heartwarmingly romantic about two Olympic skaters. One is a Hockey Player and the other is a 'couple figure skater'. And how there paths collide. The comedy is light hearted and but real to the characters being portrayed. You feel thier struggle and share in their truiumph. And laugh with their relationship. It is a feel good movie all the way through.

  2. - Doug's confession to his blue-collar buddies in a crowded bar: "I've been doing a little... figure skating."
    - Doug's incredulous brother: "You've been doing what?"
    - A confused voice from the back of the crowd: "Finger painting...?"

A manly man's guilty pleasure: I happen to think that THE CUTTING EDGE is a really good, fun movie, even with the sissy venue and the pretty, pretty outfits. It helps a guy viewer's sensibilities, though, that D.B. Sweeney plays a gritty, down-and-out hockey player who reluctantly shifts to figure skating.

She thinks he's a neanderthal. He thinks she's, um, temperamental - but maybe the voice-over in the movie trailer said it best: "She has a nickname that rhymes with 'rich.'" 45 seconds away from the Olympic gold medal, and then it all falls apart for gifted figure skater Kate Moseley and her just-not-cutting-it partner. Elsewhere, when Doug Dorsey suffers a horrible injury on the ice, it spells the end of his hockey career. Where else can Doug turn to but... pairs figure skating? He's willing to give it a try. His prickly new partner, Kate, is more skeptical, to put it nicely. She rages at her Russian coach, "What is this? Final stages of Ukrainian alcohol psychosis?" Not surprisingly, Kate Moseley goes thru skating partners like tissues (8 partners in 2 years). But we all know it's gonna work out... eventually. That is, after heaps of Kate's smirky "Toe pick!" remarks.

Not that the story breaks any new ground or anything, but even though it unfolds in conventional ways, it's graced with terrific dialogue, snappy heated banter, nicely developed character arcs, and, most notably, marvelous performances by D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly. And it's no surprise, really, that their roles here are what folks remember most about them. In the bonus feature, Sweeney recounts past experiences in which he'd tripped on something and some stranger had inevitably called out, "Toe pick!"

Sweeney and Kelly bring a palpable heat, some really nice chemistry. D.B. Sweeney is likable from the start, coming off as a regular cat. Moira Kelly has the trickier part because her character is such a, uh, demanding diva. But we eventually do get to see her vulnerable side, and your heart goes to her. Still, she's really great at delivering that offended, nose-turned-up look. Anyway, the contentious rivalry, the training montages, the class war (he comes from a working class community, she's from a filthy rich family), the falling in love unwillingly, the big skating finale at the end as they go for the gold and break out the unholily brutal Pamchenko Twist... these are all easily predicted signposts. But how can you not get pulled in? THE CUTTING EDGE is irresistible stuff, and very romantic.

This DVD is the "Gold Medal Edition" and includes three bonus features: a sneak peek at THE CUTTING EDGE: GOING FOR THE GOLD (which, by the way, features neither D.B. nor Moira and isn't nearly as good); the original theatrical trailer; and "THE CUTTING EDGE: Reflections from the Ice" - an 11-minute-long retrospective as Sweeney and Kelly reminisce about their experiences in making the film. We learn, among other things, that both leads had to learn how to skate in prepping for this movie and that Moira Kelly broke her ankle in the first week of shooting.

  3. **SPOILER ALERT**

I recently caught The Cutting Edge on television late one evening while working at home. I was going to switch channels but when I saw and heard hockey and Olympic references I kept the channel there and am very glad I did; I was rewarded with a funny and heartwarming story that I might otherwise have ignored had I heard about the "romance" aspect. This movie was an absolute joy to watch thanks to the superb acting by all involved. Great acting has been lacking in so many movies I've seen lately, so go figure I can only find great acting in old movies...this one is 18yrs old now. Moira Kelly should have received an Oscar for her perfect portrayal of a snotty, selfish, spoiled rich girl with, as we find out later on, has a soft heart. Of course, that Moira is a stunningly natural beauty doesn't hurt, either. Her acting skills were top notch here and she is notably skillful at portraying emotion perfectly for the scene and dialog with perfect timing.

Along with DB Sweeney, the two actors had perfect chemistry and timing especially at the key points in the movie. The supporting actors and even the secondary background acting made The Cutting Edge so very watchable; it was well-written and the direction and final editing made this one worth watching again. So, I bought the DVD and it is just as entertaining viewing it again even though I know what happens; that's rare for many movies.

The ending is not a giveaway, but you can clearly see through the actors that they are falling in love but don't yet know it and then you begin to see how perfect they would be for each other...the balance so needed in a relationship. The "Kate Moseley" character so needs to be loved and DB Sweeney's "Doug" reveals the character is not as shallow as one may initially believe. I really enjoyed watching this movie and, because of the outstanding acting, will probably watch it once per year or so like I do with other well-done movies that have become perennial favorites. Highly recommended...and this review is coming from one who is not into romance movies at all. Almost forgot: the DVD quality is a very good quality transfer.

  4. Yes, it's an old movie. And yes, it's very predictible. However, the two young actors where excellent and it parts of it were humorous and very entertaining.

I've seen this movie about 15 times over the years, and still enjoy it very mucy each time I watch it.

  5. I have to get a little gushy here. I love, love, love this movie! I can watch it again and again and still savour every moment. The two leads are perfectly cast in the forms of D B Sweeney and the gorgeous Moira Kelly. Even the minor and supporting parts show inspired casting e.g. Roy Dotrice as Pamshenko, the Russian skating coach. Kate's Dad has a smile to die for and the other competitors on the rink are superb with the border-line satire just hovering but never over-stepping the mark.

The skating sequences are beautifully edited and the tension is pitched at just the right level. The humour has humanity and is never profane. The story-line is a tried and true formula, but I still cry every time I watch it.

This is a movie you can share with your kids, your partner, your Mum, your mates.

Buy it, watch it, put it into your collection of best-loved movies---just like me!

  1. I don't think they decided if this will be a remake or a sequel of The Cutting Edge. It was a good movie but the identity crisis caused too many issues. You could predict what would happen when, which makes it a remake, but going in, you think it is a sequel.

At any rate, if you watched the original, you probably won't be very interested in this one. If you didn't watch the first one, you may enjoy this one more as it has been updated.

  2. i really liked this it was a great movie and the twist and turns of alex's feelings for jackie were what made the movie for me.when the two were together it was like doug and kate all over again only pissed off and confussed. great movie people who hate it can but this is a movie where you see what can happen when pair skaters fall in love.

  3. I would highly recommend this seller. Quality product and service. Seller described the DVD exactly.

  4. This being the 2nd Cutting Edge out of three-I would rate it the poorest. It's humor is dirtier and curler than the other two. Would not let my kids watch this one. The acting is really well done though and its fun to watch the extreme sports.

  5. i am very pleased with amazon for their prompt action in handleing their orders. i would recamend amazon to anyone for their dedication to the customers

  1. In short, this was a requested gift for my dad, well, I got it for him, and he LOVED it! My favorite personally is the original, but he loves all 3 of them! Based on my dad's experience since he has the movie, I rated it 5 stars.

  2. I absolutely LOVED this movie and i thought it was the best out of the three..although i HATED the fact that Jackie was divorced(I'm a romantic and i wish she was still with Alex)..anyways..i liked this movie because it was different from the other two,story-wise. Even though some parts were a little disappointing..it was still a great movie! i enjoyed it very much and i would like to add that Matt Lanter is HOT AS HELL!!

  3. I'VE GOT ALL THREE MOVIES, AND THIS ONE IS JUST AS GOOD. IF YOU LIKE ICE SKATING, YOU'LL LOVE THIS MOVIE,

  4. love the sappy movies with happy endings. This movie is right up my alley, a nice story.

  5. I love these great endings. The Stars have great facial expressions and i enjoyed this movie the best of the 3.

  1. This movie will show you one way to overcome disability. Watch it to find out how.

  2. I also saw the older version of this movie and I like this one better. It's such a heart-warming, tear-jerker movie that any caring person would love.

  3. This was a great movie- I love all the familiar Nova Scotia scenes, and being able to recognize local people as extras. It made the movie interesting on another level, in addition to a wonderful story line.

  4. This DVD tugs at your heart. I fell in love with 70's version, but wanted a more up-to-date version. Got exactly what I wanted. Happy with purchase.

  5. my nephew requested this as a birthday gift, and I wasn't able to find it locally, so was happy to find it on here.

  1. This is a great movie! This story also infuriates me!
To watch an innocent young girl fall into the hands of a older man who doesn't have her best interest at heart, and then watch her reaction when her boyfriend condemns her for "cheating" on him, is not only heart breaking, but infuriating.
Where was her boyfriend when she needed him, BEFORE all this happened? Is a 16 year old girl supposed to know how to handle all of the emotions created by innate talent, sudden fame and extreme beauty when constant temptation is hovering? I need to watch this movie again just to find out if her PARENTS WERE EVEN ALIVE!

  2. The marriage of Maria Braun, Summer of 42,The innocent,Love story, Ice castles, and Don't look now were the most arresting, reminded and emblematic love movies during the seventies. Not only because the unerring fatal tragedy that nestled behind these unforgettable moments of elusive happiness, that never could materialize themselves by the well known destiny's caprices. The first two during the WW2 and the four last ones due the sudden fatality.

"Ice castles" looks like - at first sight - as a primary love story. A promising talent from Iowa who is really disposed to participate in Olympics, sees how the disgrace stoles the only chance to be part of the selected sporting elite. And how, despite this irreversible fact, the love is capable to undertake the unexpected mission: to redeem itself and rescue the best of ourselves.

Despite of the fact I was in my middle twenties made me to preserve into my emotional environment, the haunting musical score of Marvin Hamlisch and the youthful freshness of their protagonists.

Maybe, for this actual generation, the film may seem a mite dated. But far beyond nostalgic and aesthetics considerations, this film will remain in the memory and hearts of all of us who still believe the love is not only the most excel human passion but besides, the driving force of the human soul.

  3. I purchased this CD because I had once watched the movie on TV what seems like a hundred years ago when life was indeed simpler. This is a "clean cut" film about a young lady who had been ice skating her whole life on a country pond, and learned to love the sport. A local woman who appears to be a good moose hunter, decided she would train her for the nationals. She wore a homemade costume and out-skated the country's best.

A fashionable woman who trains Olympic "wannabes" watched her and decided she was Olympic material. The rest of the movie tells a story about a beautiful girl who was forced to change her "country" outlook on life in exchange for all the glitter and glamor associated with the road to Olympic success. A tragedy, however, changed the rest of her life and she, with the help of a longtime friend, worked to overcome this seemingly impossible hurdle. A wonderful lesson for all of us.

I highly recommend this to anyone who would enjoy ice skating, and a light-hearted romance movie. This film arrived in a timely manner, and in better than expected condition as the vendor described.

  4. I really liked this movie. It has a great story line and shows how much one can accompolish even when challenged.

  5. I received my DVD ahead of schedule and the product was of a very high quality. I have no problem in recommending this distributor to other customers.
