  1. How ironic is this movie? Success goes to Rocky's head, and he loses his edge. The same could be said for Stallone, who was really adrift at this point. Rocky III is a big step down from the previous two movies, and even though I can see Stallone trying to make it great, he's not succeeding. Best part? Apollo Creed, of course. The segments in his dingy gym are really alive, and his motivational speeches are great. By comparison, Rocky's slow-talking, slow-thinking character is becoming tiresome. Worst part? Oh, for Heaven's sake, that Mr. T does not work at all. After topping a class act like Apollo, Rocky is beat by this dumb punk? Both fights are quick and one-sided - note how quickly Rocky thumps Clubber in the final battle, which is rather unsatisfying after his two epic clashes with Apollo. Nevertheless, I own this movie, because hey, it's Rocky and it's got rousing music and stuff. You could do worse.

  2. Great Movie. A good movie for all boxing fans and education on boxing. Excellent acting by Sylvester Stallone. Mr. T plays a fabulous role and surely one of his best films. A great low key film. Awesome direction by Sylvester Stallone, the movie seemed very real. Almost one of the greatest films ever made.

  3. This is such a good movie!! I love all the Rocky films!:) Mr. T is really, really tough in this movie, even kind of scary.

  4. You know why I love the Rocky movies? Honestly? It's because you *really* get into the fight scenes. They get your adrenaline rushing. You treat the bouts like they are the real thing, and happening live on your television. That's definitely the number one reason I originally fell in love with the Rocky series.

Another reason is the splendid build-up concerning Rocky's character. You *want* him to prevail with a victory because you watch him train and workout hard -each and every day- for the final showdown with his opponent.

What makes the third Rocky film stand out in my mind is the fact that his opponent is none other than Mr. T! He plays a VERY convincing bad guy, with a really mean attitude, and shows exactly what he's made of in the ring.

Rocky finds out the hard way what happens when you mess with Mr. T (going under the boxing name of Clubber Lang).

There's a ton of emotion with this film, which easily separates the emotional impact compared to the previous Rocky films. Now more than *ever* before you want Rocky to win the final match against an opponent who's easily much bigger and badder than he is.

Will Rocky win? Is Rocky's spirit *really* into winning this big match-up or has becoming champion made him lose his edge? Watch and find out.

  5. The sheer level of stunt casting, preposterous dialogue and the hideousness of Clubber Lang as a character make this my least favorite "Rocky" film to watch--and there's really nothing to suggest to me that it's cinematically superior enough to make up for these faults. It's like a bad, early-'80s comic book where in order to make the hero seem larger than life, the villain has to be a ridiculous charicature of a human being. Mr. T is alright in the role--doing his best with what he has to work with--but the moments of forced sentiment set into motion by killing off Mick are done better in the fourth film, and Lang falls short in one of the important categories of being a villain: The best villains are guys you love to hate. With Clubber Lang, I just wanted him off the screen.

  1. This is a great 'feel-good' movie. It's got something in it for both guys and girls: football, bar fight, personal problems, internal struggles, and romance.
My wife and I both love this movie and watch it whenever we want to watch something light and fun; with, of course, a guy-gets-girl happy ending.

  2. Nobody's a bigger Keanu Reeves fan than me and this is Keanu at his best! I already owned this movie and watch it every time it's on television. I keep my niece's kids while she works on weekends and her eleven year old son plays football. I thought he might like it so we sat up late one Saturday night and watched it. He loved it too. For him, it rated right up there with "The Matrix" so I bought it for him for Christmas. He was thrilled!

Keanu Reeves plays Shane Falco, a former college football player who lost a bowl game because he froze up. When the regular football players went on stike, replacement players were brought in to finish the season. Reeves plays the quarterback and Gene Hackman is the coach. The replacement players consist of a swat team member, a convict, a former soccer player turned pub owner and a sumo wrestler, among others. Although the games are serious, there's also romance between Falco and Annabell, the head cheerleader. There are alot of really funny scenes and some great music. I ran across this movie by channel surfing one night and stopped to watch it because, believe it or not, I though Keanu Reeves was really cute but I didn't have any idea who he was. I started watching and liked the movie. It was on several times that weekend and I watched it every time. I've probably seen it about twenty times and I'll keep watching it. I highly recommend it. It's serious and light-hearted and I think it'll appeal to anyone, even those who aren't football fans.

  3. Very average sports film. Nothing real touching here. I love Gene Hackman and Keanu Reeves though.
I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't rate it anything spectacular. Very forgettable.
The once scene that really stuck out to me was the one in the bar where they played Sting's Every Breath you Take before the two kiss. That was a little too deep for two people who just met each other a couple weeks ago.
Otherwise, the characters were all pretty likeable and funny, storyline was fun too.

  4. The hidden meaning in this strike where the rich players were fighting the rich owners
was that corporations had killed unionism?
We get the popular actor Keanu Reeves playing a "popular" scab.
Since no body won in this fight,
and everybody lost, the movie is certainly a type of double think?
Below the comedy in reality you have American sweat shops opening in the big cities
at slave wages and illegal alien workers?
Laugh at this all you want,
you are laughing at the fall of American industry.
My Dad and his brothers fought to get a fair living wage
for working men, and like the social security system
    the result today is lost?

  5. I cant rate this movie since I didn't get a chance, someone stole it before I got to see it. I will purchase again once I get a list together

  1. I really liked this movie and recomend this movie to any high school basketball coach. this movie shows that the schools are about academics 1st and not just sports, which is the way it should be. but unfortunately it's not like that with most schools which is just sad.

  2. The storyline has been done to death: determined coach comes to rescue the kids. This time it is a largely minority basketball team and Ken Carter, who played for Richmond High thirty years ago, comes to turn the kids into students, athletes and a team in that order.

Lots of basketball, lots of insights into the kids and their lives. Gritty, gritty, gritty. The script is above average as are most of the performances.

But there is never any doubt that this movie is a star vehicle for Samuel L. Jackson. He is the movie. He overpowers everything and everyone around him. I am sure that real movie critics have a set of words for this kind of bravura performance.

Jackson is simply great and he carries the movie on his shoulders, rendering Ken Carter as a truly fine man, someone who cares about the kids entrusted to his harsh discipline and clear goals.

If you want to be inspired, if you want to feel that there is hope out there, see this movie: Samuel L. Jackson's Ken Carter will convince you that there is a chance things will come out okay.

  3. Coach Carter is an inspiring movie that teaches young African Americans to respect themselves, rise above stereotypes and invest in their own education to secure a better future. Directed by Thomas Carter, Coach Carter is based on the true story of Ken Carter, played by Samuel Jackson, who takes the job as the basketball coach of the high school team in Richmond, CA. Carter is determined to change the lives of his players, to make them champions both in school and on court. He transforms a team that only won four games in an entire season to an undefeated team. As the team climbs on its winning streak, Coach Carter finds that some of his players are failing their classes and not following the terms of the academic contract that they signed promising decent grades. As a result, he locks up the gym and cancels practices and games, which stirs enormous opposition from the whole neighborhood.

While the story of Coach Carter is inspiring, the movie exaggerates the fate of young African American men: either go to college or end up in jail. This dramatization is effective however as it gives the viewer a better understanding of the dangers and temptations of life on the streets of the poverty-stricken and crime-latent neighborhoods of Richmond. This understanding makes the viewers more sympathetic and appreciative of Coach Carter's unconventional methods and supports his actions (signing academic contracts, locking up the gym, canceling games, etc.), although a bit outrageous. In a scene where the school board and the parents vote against Carter's lock-out, you can't help but standby Carter's side and hope he achieves his goal. This scene, however, is dramatized and embellished in the movie as the school board/parents vs. Coach Carter hearing to vote against the lock-out didn't actually occur. In reality, the principal supported the lock-out and even though Coach Carter received phone calls from parents complaining about his decision, they supported his lock-out after listening to his explanations. Since the true conflict resolution was amicable, the movie has to fabricate the vote-out scene to create tension and enhance the excitement of the movie. In addition, this embellishment adds to the credibility of poor the Richmond neighborhood with fairly uneducated parents who do not appreciate the value of education.

Another discrepancy between the movie and Ken Carter's story is the academic contract. The movie depicts players reluctantly signing Coach Carter's contract, promising a 2.3 GPA, decent class attendance and participation, and proper conduct. Some players are irked by this stringent set of rules and tension rises between the coach and the players. However, in truth, Coach Carter actually worked with his players to draft the contract together. They wanted to be pushed beyond the average 2.0 GPA required of athletes to compete in California schools and decided to set the bar higher. If this truth was told, the movie would be boring; hence, it was altered to create the rising tension and conflict and enhanced the movie's appeal.

On the first day of practice, Coach Carter says, "Sir is a term of respect, and you will have my respect until you abuse it," as he attempts to teach the group of players with poor attitudes mutual respect. This becomes the strong foundation that builds up the team and is pivotal to the transformation of the players' characters and their outlook on life. Samuel Jackson's versatility as an actor is visible as he shifts from demanding coach, compassionate teacher, angry parent, and disappointing member of community--all delivered and made real by his authoritative tone of voice, body language and expressions. Jackson's presence--like a drill sergeant commanding respect as he unites his team--carries the movie and gives it an edge, differentiating it from a typical feel-good Disney movie. The role of Coach Carter is one of Jackson's strongest performances. The casting of the players gives an eclectic mix of characters--funny, cool, troubled, serious, scholastic--each likable in his own way, making the movie experience more enjoyable for the viewer. To top it off, the soundtrack is upbeat and exciting to add to the overall basketball theme of the movie. This movie is definitely worth the DVD price, and more.

  4. What I get from this movie is this: Honor Your Contract, Sir!

Think of it, how many of us really honor our contract? In fact, many of the big banks and insurance did not honor their side of the contract: protect their customers (investors).

If you have problem with your kids, students or even yourself, just remember this: honor your contact. It is the basis for human civilisation.

Coach Ken Carter is really a role model for me: I am quoting him now in my current one-to-one and big group coaching programs. Thanks.

  5. Have always liked this movie and wanted to own it. Living in CA, what I do like about this movie is about the way things are in some parts of this state. Towards the end, the team did not win the finals BUT what matters is the passion that every player had. Secondly, the way coach made every hostile individual come together and work as a team. Excellent screenplay, can't say enough about this movie. KUDOS to Ken Carter - the coach whom the story was based upon. Wish every 5-10 yrs a Ken Carter is born and be the Catharsis of the society!!!

  1. It certainly started out as just another football film (though over-directed with a hyper-active camera)...the parties, the sexual shenanigans, the over-the-top characters. I was ready to pan the film.
But then it heated up. Once the season started, and the football action became the centerpiece, this film shined. The characters were compelling and you really felt for them and their individual situations.

I am not a Billy Bob Thorton fan, but I was pleasantly surprised by his controlled performance. Too often the coaches in football movies are completely over the top. Thorton had the strength to get on people - but he never over did it. It was a football coach. And the movie ended on a strong note. The half-time speech Thorton gives during the final game is something that gives a former football player goose bumps. It really encapsulates what its truly like to be a part of a football TEAM...and how powerful that experience can be.

I have seen movies like "All the Right Moves", "The Program", "Varsity Blues" and the laughable "Any Given Sunday". NONE of them can hold a candle to this movie. Any football player or fan needs to watch this film...the best football movie I have ever watched.

  2. Good movie. Missed some key points from the book like the academic scandal which only adds to the drama in the title game. Overall good movie though

  3. Loved it! My grandson was a lineman in this picture!

    REALLY!

  4. The idea of the inspirational sports drama is not a new one. It has been ravaging havoc in the cinemas since the dawn of time, and while they are truly a dime a dozen, there is rarely a film that actually captures the very meaning and essence of the sport it is championing. All too often the films are littered with so much saccharine `goodness' that the whole point of the story is bogged down by clichéd Hollywood atmosphere. They all wind up blurring together in a long line of disposable, familiar, sports movies.

    There is no oomph!

That is why I absolutely love this movie. `Friday Night Lights' is not your typical sports drama. Stripped down and basically bare to the bone, this film is as rough and tough as they come. With the grit needed to really pack a punch to the gut, and the emotional core to elevate this from the ashes that are every other sports film, `Friday Night Lights' is a shining beacon on the game that has become the lives of so many.

This is one of the only sports films to actually make the sport the leading character.

The film is based on the true story of a high school football team in West Texas. The team consists of your `typical' members, from the star player (who happens to be black) to the quarterback struggling to leave his home-life off the field, to the careless rebel suffering at the hands of an abusive father. INSTEAD of playing to each cliché like it was the saving grace of the film, and exploiting each storyline for each tear it can muster, this film allows the players lives to further embellish the power of the game itself, breathing life onto the field, where it belongs. Instead of focusing our attention on how these young men are going to patch up their lives off the field, we are brought to the sobering realization that if they don't patch their lives up ON the field, their lives are basically worthless.

This game is EVERYTHING to them, and you feel that in your soul.

With an onslaught of powerful performances from Lucas Black, Garrett Hedlund and Derek Luke, as well as an amazingly moving turn by country superstar Tim McGraw, `Friday Night Lights' has not a single wrong note. As the film draws to its dramatic and heartbreaking climax there is a moment where everything seems lost and broken only to have it all come together in the most meaningful and appropriate of ways. It isn't forced, it isn't out of place and it isn't sappy; it is just right.

    Yes, I cried.

  5. i could give this 5 stars. i will admit that it takes alittle time to get things going in the movie. i watched this movie AFTER i watched... THE GREATEST FOOTBALL MOVIE IN THE ENTIRE WORLD....any givin sunday. this movie just blew that piece of crap outta the water. i liked the acting of that country singer...he seemed real natural. worth watching...nice ending...all the way.

  1. A program that has a library of drills that Little League coaches
will be able to use in practices. The variety is well explained and though
the pace of the video is quick, it keeps your interest.
We were only able to use about 2/3rds of the drills but
they all worked well. Looking forward to next season to try the rest.
I recommend this for parent & coaches of Little Leaguers.

People who bought the above program also recommend these popular baseball products.

  2. "The one constant through all the years, has been baseball. America has rolled by like
an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again.
But baseball has marked the time. This DVD, this game, is part of our past. It reminds
us of all that once was good, and that could be again. Oh, people will come to Little League practice.
People will most definitely come. ... THE 59 MINUTE BASEBALL PRACTICE"

Baseball Coaching:Schupak's Baseball Super 8 DVD Set Also consider Marty Schupak's baseball 8 DVD set popular with Little League parents & Coaches.

  3. You see, you spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball,
and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time.

    ~Jim Bouton, Ball Four,

This DVD "grips" you like baseball does. Your practices will not only be
good for fundamental skills but your team will enjoy them. No doubt after a day at work
and commuting home, leading a Little League team of 10, 11 and 12 year olds in
a practice can seem like a chore. This program will simplify youth baseball
and put some fun into your practices for you (the coach) also.

Marty Schupak also produced these popular DVDs available on Amazon.

  4. I've heard a lot about this video and was only disappointed in one aspect.
The video goes about 20% too fast for me and should have had more detailed explanations.
The drills themselves really scored high with me. Our team did have better
practices using the content. If you get anything out of this, it should be the concept to
intertwine fun with skills. Also to keep practicing throughout the season.
I would recommend THE 59 MINUTE BASEBALL PRACTICE
to all Little League & youth baseball coaches and parents.
His book "Youth Baseball Drills" is also very good and compliments
    this video.

  1. Director John Lee Hancock masterminds a movie based on a true story of an over-30 baseball player who makes a comeback and finds himself with another shot at the major leagues. Dennis Quaid plays Jim Morris, who actually played for the Tampa Bay Rays as a relief pitcher.I've seen "The Rookie" so many times that I feel like I was behind the plate, catching a Morris fastball. "Field of Dreams","The Natural",and for that matter Kevin Costner's portrayal of Billy Chapel in "For the Love of the Game", all have an underlying theme along with "The Rookie" and that is the relationship between father and son.In "The Rookie" that relationship is strained and if the ending doesn't get to you...nothing will.

  2. Strongly recommend this movie. Dennis Quaid is awesome. Also, Brian Cox has a great role as the main character's father.

  3. I thoroughly enjoyed THE ROOKIE, and there is only a very small handful of sports movies I like. THE ROOKIE is the true story of an aging, small-town Texas high baseball coach and science teacher names Jim Morris who just happened to have a faster draw than Glenn Ford. (If you're too young to know who Glenn Ford is then you might need to research the "Westerns" section.)

This film is uniquely told with a short prologue that is so unique and creative, that no sports movie director would ever have come up with such a thing. The film opens and progresses showing the continuous nature of American life through the eyes of a young boy whose dreams are bigger than his feet can carry him. But not too late in life, his dream and childhood passion is fully realized and the reward for him is timeless, just as the reward for us results an unforgettable and inspiring movie watching.

I might add that this movie is clean family viewing. You can watch it with you pastor's grandmother in the room and not have to be embarrassed about anything. (Occasionally, though not very often, Hollywood does something right.)

Another more classic baseball movie that I highly recommend (and also a true story) is THE STRATTON STORY starring Jimmy Stewart, June Allyson, and Frank Morgan.

  4. this movie is so allsome i recomened it to eney baseball fan or player its my favorite movie

  1. I have shared this movie with the local track team and it always draws an emotional response. It is a great movie for challenging teens to reach for their dreams- while not letting other influences and partying or just plain bad luck detract from their lives. And it does this without being preachy. This is one of my favorite actors, Billy Crudup's greatest movies.

  2. I loved Without Limits. This is a film to watch when you are laid up on the couch with a running injury. Inspirational portrait of a cult hero, the favorite of high school cross country teams across America.
The perfect Christmas or birthday gift for your high school cross country runner.

  3. dvd was in great conditions and was quickly delivered. all I expect when buying a dvd. thanks!

  4. Described well and was in quality condition. Delivery was slow though. Order and recieved 3 other DVD's ordered from other vendors a week sooner.

  5. As our family has several members involved in cross country, we are all very inspired by the story of Steve Prefontaine, although we do feel that the rating of the movie could have been reconsidered for sex and language, so that we could have been better prepared! Rating says PG-13, but this man was quite "friendly" with the ladies when he wasn't running, and it left us squeamish watching it with our teenager who does not act or talk like this! Otherwise a great story! To see the bond that developed between runner and coach, and how much they gave to eachother was moving.
