5 comments about Rocky III.
- **1/2 1982. Written and directed by Sylvester Stallone. A lot of workout, two boxing matches and a wrestling match for this second sequel. The characters don't have any psychological depth anymore, hence the movie is not as good as the first episodes.
- (The following review was written by Karyn's husband, Ted)
Ask anyone you know which Rocky movie was their favorite and they will gladly tell you: 'Rocky 3, the one with Mr.T!" Yes, Stallone returns to the ring for a third time, but Rocky is bloated with fame and success to the point of having forgotten the reasons why he fought so hard to get there. He is reminded very quickly by a relatively unknown fighter named Clubber Lang ( Mr. T ) This walking timebomb has followed Rocky's rise to the top and is convinced he's a sellout-a 'paper champion' with no balls. Stallone stars, writes, and directs with amazing precision as he wants us to see Rocky as just a man. A man who has given in to the very lucrative endorsement deals and temptations that come with fame and being a world champion. Rocky seems to have it all, but has he sold out? Has he lost his soul in his desires to be the best? ( Tiger Woods, are you listening?)
Mr. T educates Rocky the hard way, defeating him like a spoiled step-child in front of the world. Burgess Meredith returns to try and talk Rocky into turning down the fight, but ends up having a fatal heart attack after being abused by the terrible Mr.T. This is a pivotal moment for Rocky as he could just retire for good. Apollo Creed ( Carl Weathers ) also returns as Rocky's best friend and trains Rocky to get back what he has lost-That's right, baby-The Eye of the Tiger! The training montage was invented by Stallone and this one is vintage 80's, but in a good way, not cheesy. Adrian and Paulie also return for the third round and we see how Paulie has feelings after all as he feels left out in the cold by all Rocky's attention. After all the blood, sweat, and tears of the training montage, Rocky is ready to payback Mr.T with a re-match.What is truly amazing to watch is the pure hatred Mr. T has for Rocky- He even makes it very personal when he insults Adrian in public-inticing Rocky to fight. We can feel the never-ending rage that Clubber Lang has even by himself as he trains ! Mr. T is ready to open up a can of whoopass, but underestimates Balboa's determination and persistence in the final fight. I still stand up and cheer as Rocky takes the abuse but keeps fighting like a pit-bull against Mr.T and realizes that Mr.T 'Ain't so BAAD! You ain't so BAAD!'
A truly remarkable victory for Rocky ( The first complete victory since parts one and two were considered a 'tie', remember?) and by far the most entertaining boxing film of all time. Rocky! Rocky! Rocky!
- I think the matchup vs Mr. T was great. "Prediction?...Pain." That's my favorite line in the whole series. I remember watching this as a kid and is a classic in my book.
- The Rocky franchise died with the first. There can be no others, as a matter of continuity. "There ain't gonna be no rematch." Remember that? And, yet, there was. That was the pinnacle of the story, breaking the Creed's will. This was never about winning, so much as not giving up. But, whatever.
If there was going to be a second addition, this should have been it. With Clubber holding the title and Rocky determined to take it. That would have been fine, but, no...Sly wanted riches. I can relate.
Now, if you can forgive all that, there is fun to be had. It comes by way of Clubber Lang, the most awesome character of all Rocky's opponents. MR T plays this role very well; his best performance of that era. Without Clubber, however, Rocky III does not stand all that well.
Although it is the most fun of the franchise, it is a miss in any other capacity.
- Positives:
Great montage depicting Rocky's life after winning the title.
Terrific bad-guy turn by Mr. T as Clubber Lang.
Fun mix of boxing/wrestling with Hulk Hogan portraying Thunder Lips.
Final fight scene.
Apollo Creed's training of Rocky.
Eye of the Tiger. Great song that's still catchy after all these years.
Stallone pokes fun of himself by pointing out all the plastic surgery he had done after Rocky II.
Negatives:
Burt Young is awful. Whether it's due to performance or material is immaterial, as both are wretched.
Talia Shire adds nothing to the movie. Again, whether it's performance or material is immaterial.
Burgess Meredith...overacts. At least his character dies early.
Overall:
Lots of fun. Holds up well.

- Oh my God, if this movie was any slower, it'd take a month to watch. They went a little nutso with the musical score, too.
But what really irks me is why they used a Scot, Brian Denis, to play Morris' father. You might remember Denis as the milky-eyed uncle of William Wallace in Braveheart ("You've got the look of your mother." "learn to use this, it'll teach you to use this.")and as the alcoholic father of Daphne Moon in "Frasier." They couldn't find, out of 158 million American males, an American to play an Amercian in a baseball film, set, guess where, in American? I guess Chow Young Phat was too busy to accept the role. Why not have Charo play his American mom? Shame on Diznee. Muy malo pelicula.
- An excellent family movie. It doesn't get any better than this as far as family movies go. No foul language and NO nudity. It is a drama that is fun to watch as a family stuggles to deal with the father's sudden thrust into the limelight of an aged baseball player.

5 comments about Friday Night Lights (Full Screen Edition).
- ***1/2 2004. Co-written and directed by Peter Berg, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS is an adaptation of Buzz Bissinger's Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream . Another football movie telling, this time, the story of a Texas high school team heading to the state championship. Good movie presenting this sport as an American rite of passage for boys.
- Great movie, especially for those football buffs. Billy Bob is excellent. Realistic and heartwarming movie.
- I've never been a big fan of sports but I have enjoyed far too many sports films. Some of them I came across quite by accident or due to friend's recommendations. Others I had to see because of where I lived (HOOSIERS was directed by local resident transplanted to LA David Anspaugh). The fact is that while I never enjoyed the sports so much, I always appreciated what it was that was going on. And the movies made about sports have for the most part always turned out well.
But this movie takes things one step further than most. It gets to the heart of the game as well as the downside without using the usual contrivances of most films. Some may appear to be those, but upon closer examination you can find the differences. The big game, the problematic team member, the tough as nails coach. All are here but not quite like you may have seen them before.
Billy Bob Thornton stars as coach Gary Gaines, the coach of the Permian High Panthers from Odessa, TX. The town of Odessa worships the ground that their players walk on. Why? Because there is nothing or little else to do or find in Odessa.
This year the team has the chance to make it all the way, to be the state champs. And all hopes are residing on the shoulders of one player, Boobie Miles (Derek Luke), a player who is not only filled with talent but with an ego to match. The team rallies behind Boobie and knows that they are going to win. That is until an injury sidelines Boobie...for good.
Now if the team is to make it, they must work together and work hard to get there. The battle is not one won by an individual, but won by the team. And each and every one works in their own way to get there.
The film offers us glimpses into the lives of the players, but none to the extent that the story becomes each individual's. Instead, it shows their trial and tribulation but keeps coming back to the team and the efforts they make to become winners. Rather than become absorbed in the off the field dramas of each, the film focuses on what goes on ON the field. It is perhaps the best shot look at football on the field that I have seen. It draws you in and places you on the field with the team, rooting for them all the way.
You feel it all in this film. The pressures to perform coming from coach and community, the need to win, the desire to be their best, the confusion of becoming a "star" in the local school and community that is passed on to these gridiron heroes. And right smack in the middle of it all is the heart that beats loud and clear, the heart that shows these youngsters were there not for the fame and glory but because they felt the need within themselves to be their best.
The film is based on the best seller by author H.G.Bissinger and based on the true story. While I am certain an amount of liberties were taken with this book, the soul is very much seen on film. One great extra on the DVD is the inclusion of a look at the players as they are today. The question of what happened to Boobie Miles after his misfortune is answered as are what became of the other teammates involved. The movie is part touching, part sports like violence and part examination of what goes on in the lives of teen sports heroes. But above all else, it is a movie that draws you in and holds you tight until the clock ticks down the final seconds of the game.
- I love this movie.
The one thing I have come to appreciate is the very fact that if it were not for the misfortune of B. Miles, this movie and the recognition this team and individuals received would have never come about. One comes to the conclusion that Miles's misfortune has followed him in many ways into adulthood.
The flaw of the movie is the many unanswered question marks left behind. For instance, was the mother of our QB hero sick or addicted ? What was the clasroom and campus atmosphere really like for the players ? What about school work and part time jobs ? The movie was grand and because of its breadth many things that should have been focused on were not.
But this movie in its grandness pulls beyond any perceived flaw it may have.
It is just awesome.
- I am a woman. I am a woman who doesn't follow sports much in real life, nor do I watch movies about sports. The only reason I picked this up was because I have a thing for Garrett Hedlund as eye candy and I am a fan of Billy Bob Thornton. I could care less about a football movie. Still, this was a good movie. Following in the footsteps of the great sports movies (The Natural, Rudy, Rocky, etc.), we are rooting for the underdog and feeling a great joy when someone triumphs over a great obsticle.
We are following the 1988 high school football season of the Panthers in a small Texas town. We are in America's heartland, Texas, a state that practically throbs with national pride and a love of football. Football is important, and you feel the exuberance of all the star team members as they interact with the townsfolk and media. Each has their own struggle, Garret Hedlund's probably being the most with an abusive father (Time McGraw) and his obvious popularity with the girls (gotta love that scene where the girl gives him a Rice Krispy sculpture!). Billy Bob is a stereotypical hard nosed coach, gruff and demanding. He pushes them as hard as he can. And they triumph.
A great feel good movie about overcoming. It just happens to be a sports movie too.

- This is most definitely NOT lesbian cinema. Rather it is a touching love story between two people; one of whom happens to be a lesbian and the other (Hemmingway), who is bi. The writing, casting and direction of this movie are top-notch. The only negative is that it is rather anti-climactic due to the ridiculous boycott of the 1980 Olympics by the US government.
- Saw this movie back in 1982 when it first became a hit with soldiers and airmen alike while stationed overseas. Have long searched for the DVD version and now I've got it. Thank you very much
- Is older but plays well and doesn't matter was just glad to find the movie. Arrived in timely manner
- I love this movie. it was one of the first one's I saw, but they should have ended up together, but that's what you get when the movie is written by a man.
- "Personal Best" is all about extending yourself to the limit and taking matters into your own hands. It still stands up after all these years. The lasting memories of this movie will always give me something to hold on to; it is just as stimulating as it was in 1982, right up to the climax.

- Be careful when ordering - I thought I was obtaining a DVD instead it was the wrong format. Product arrived on time and as ordered! Old age must be kicking in!!! No problem with the product or delivery time.
- The ONLY person who was able to act in this movie was S.Jackson. The rest of the people, where did they find them? And Ashanti, someone needs to tell her she couldn't sing and she definately CANNOT act!!!
- Samuel L is one of the greatest of all time. A powerful & very touching movie that gives a good & very realistic view of life for the neglected societies. Yes, yes yes!
- I wish there were more stories like this. Discipline properly applied and reward for the effort and hard work. Life-changing experiences for those students. I recently met the REAL Coach Carter at John DiLemme's Find Your Why and Fly Main Event and he is just as inspiring in person as the movie. This story gives hope for our children.
- This movie is about a team that goes from being mad to being normal and from always doing bad to always doing good. Coach Carter is about a basketball team that lives in a rough town and a rough high school. The Richmond Oilers had a really bad coach until the new coach Mr. Carter came around. Coach Carter used to go to the school and broke a bunch of records and knew a lot about basketball. Ever since Coach Carter started to coach, the team progressed and he lead the team to the state championships. This movie is very inspiring and I would give it four and a half out of five. This movie shows you that you can do anything if you believe in yourself. This movie is PG-13 so I would not recommend this to younger kids. This movie is also a true story so the movie always keeps you on your toes. Real \life

- This movie is one of our favorites. My son and I are movie quoters and this one is a classic. It gets funnier and funnier evertime we watch it. It has all - sports, comedy, romance.
- This is a great movie, very entertaining. Was delivered on time during the xmas rush. As advertised!
- this product was great! The price was great (although I had to pay an arm and a leg for next day shipping to get it in time for christmas)
- This movie is one of a rarity for me: a cliche that works. The plot is as old as time--a bunch of misfits recruited to pull off something incredible, in this case a playoff appearance for the hometown football team after all the regulars go on strike.
The characters are the same, the plot is the same, and the ending is so obvious even Stevie Wonder could see it coming. But for some reason I still like it. I know this isn't exactly a ringing endorsement, but check it out anyway--you might be pleasantly surprised.
- Even though it's a sports movie, it is great. Received in quick time. Was pleased with the product, and delivery.

- This is one of my favorite and most inspirational movies that I have ever seen. I too am a runner and agree with the way that Pre ran and thought. If you are a sports fan of any type, you will love this movie!
- If you have not seen this movie, you need you. Even if you know next to nothing about Steve Prefontaine, the film is excellent. It will pull you into the story and leave you full of emotion. It is an absolutely heartwrenching tale.
- I am amazed that anyone could consider this a good film. You see, when I go to a movie I don't need to know the size of a man's private part coupled with my Christian faith. Secondly, Mac Wilkins is portrayed as a hulking moron. Is it not safe to assume that producers/writers of this film have yet to graduate from Junior High? This is obviously their level of development. Rent "Prefontaine" with Jared Leto. Respect the memory of the Coos Bay native with a film worthy of his memory. GO PRE! To the writers of "Without Limits" > GO AWAY!
- Dear Prospective Buyer,
I must disclose first that I am a resident of Eugene, Oregon or "Track
Town, USA" (we are greatly anticipating the 2008 US Olympic Trials here at the end of June). so I may be a bit biased on this subject. This movie is well-written, acted, filmed and examines the life of Pre "warts and all". It is also the only movie (there is another) that included the participation of Bill Bowerman (Pre's coach) and other former members of the team with which Pre ran. Not only is Billy Crudup's likeness to Pre amazing, but he portrays him quite well! There are also segments that refer to Bowerman's constant experimentations for better shoes for his runners (leading to the founding of Nike). While Donald Sutherland does not look like Bowerman, he was able to project the wonderful mannerisms, jests and straight-talk for which Bowerman was infamous. While I am not currently a runner, when I was, I was in awe of the Univ. of Oregon track teams in the late 60's and early 70's, including the years Steve Prefontaine attended the school. As an aside, a good friend's father was a teammate of Pre's at Marshfield H.S. in Coos Bay, OR. There is a palpable pride of and aura about the legend of Pre here in Eugene even for us non-runners. The Oregon Track Club even maintains a bark running trail near the Willamette River that Pre first initiated upon his introduction to them in Europe. Enjoy.
As an adjunct to this movie, I can recommend the biography by Kenny Moore (former Pre teammate, long-time writer for Sports Illustrated and Eugene native-a good friend of mine owns the house he grew up in) about the late, illustrious U of O coach, "Bowerman and the Men of Oregon". Bowerman and the Men of Oregon: The Story of Oregon's Legendary Coach and Nike's Cofounder I was especially pleased to learn that Bowerman's great- and grand-parents founded and settled the little town of Fossil in Eastern Oregon because it was where my father was born when my maternal grand-father owned a blacksmith shop there in the late 1800's. The book is full of wonderful Oregon and track history. If you also purchase the book, you will have given yourself two wonderful gems.
Charlotte Brandt, Eugene, OR
- It's hard to say anything bad about a movie which features the life story of a terrific athlete who died way too young. Since the object of this film died in a car wreck at age 24, it seems it's somehow "off-limits" to be critical of "Without Limits" -- the compelling story of 1970s long distance phenom Steve Prefontaine, of the University of Oregon.
But this movie earns praise. You don't have to love long-distance running to love this movie, and love Pre even more. Like Springsteen, you get the sense Pre could have been a member of his own audience -- yelling "Go Pre, you bleepity-bleep!" out at himself.
The film spawned a resurgence in Pre gear. Go to www.cafepress.com and order up a "Go Pre" tee-shirt, among other items, if you wish.
Pre was a hard-working "cab driver," with a real personality, in a sport routinely dominated by the more aloof "jet set."
Get Pre ... Go Pre !!

5 comments about Facing the Giants (Widescreen).
- Coach Taylor is having all kinds of problems in his life. He's about to be fired from being a football coach and he can't have any kids because of him. When things get really bad, he turns to God. Facing the Giants is a movie that expresses what God's love really is and how he can really work in people's lives. Never underestimate God. He can do anything and everything. Facing the Giants is the best Christian movie I've ever seen to this day. If you're looking for hope, turn to Facing the Giants. You won't be disappointed.
- This is a great movie...brings us to tears every time we watch it. I think Christians should watch this atleast once a month just to keep in check.
- The movie is called "Facing the Giants" and one of the first characters you meet is a small kid named David who is just trying out for the football team since he can't play soccer at his school. He becomes the back-up kicker; hmmm... what's he going to do against the Giants?
So as far as movies (just writing, acting, filming etc. not message), this movie is awful. The plot is formulaic to the point that you think it might be making fun of Christian formulaic movies.
Outside of this, the movie sends terrible messages. First is race. There is not one single black player on the football team, in Albany, GA! There is only one black character with any speaking lines - an assistant coach. He is used specifically for comic relief. The only other time he is used is when the coach ignores his input. The only other black people in the movie are all opponents. They are described as faster and stronger, but the all-white Christian team can beat them, as the main character (and writer-director) says, "we can out think them." The movie appears to promote the marginalization of blacks in a protestant christian context. Great Christian message for kids!
The second issue is Creation Care. The wife in the movie drives a gigantic SUV and the coach gets an F150 as his reward. So this double income, no child family has two gas guzzlers that destroy God's Creation of gift to mankind - and this is considered a good thing. Another great Christian message!
Issue number 3, pray to God and you'll get everything you want in life. This is not only simplistic but also offensive to everybody from Southern Sudanese to Jews and Christians under Soviet Communism to Job! Not one bad thing happens to the team after they become Christians. This is not the message that any of the Christian or Jewish writers of the Bible protrayed! In this awful film, salvation comes as material rewards in this life. Great Christian message!
The fourth issue has nothing to do with Christian values. The score is 23-21 with like 15 seconds left in the game and the coach of the other team (the only one with black players) goes for it on fourth down instead of kicking the field goal. No coach who has one three straight state championships has done so by being an idiot! But, this coach blows the game by not kicking the field goal! It's just ridiculously implausable.
I would never show this movie to anyone. Its racist undertone, its lack of concern for the God's creation and its complete highjacking of Christianity into an instant-gratification materialist consumerist faith are offensive to me and to my faith. While I know lots of people misuse or misrepresent the bible for their own purposes, this one is so egregious, I cannot accept it. If I could give it fewer than one star, I would!
- Facing the Giants is a small budget movie about a high school football team that needs some help. Ultimately, the coach and the team have a religious awakening and are able to play much more effectively with their increased faith.
The movie is kind of like Remember the Titans, but instead of overcoming race as the team's obstacle to unity, they overcome spiritual apathy. This is not what you normally see coming from Hollywood. In fact, for the first half hour, I was very close to giving up on it for the bad acting, the ridiculous story and more. However, after the first half hour, the movie starts to find a rhythm and pull itself together. It turns out to be a nice, inspiring feel-good story.
I would recommend this movie to all church-going sports fans. If you don't believe in God, you would probably find the movie very strange. Shoot, I do believe in God and I found the movie pretty strange, but got used to it, accepted it and by the end of the movie, embraced it. I will likely add it to my sports-underdog collection of movies with Pistol Pete, Birth of a Legend, Remember the Titans, Rudy, Miracle, Chariots of Fire, and more.
- Una pelicula que nos enseƱa a depender de Dios primero, cumplir con Dios y todo lo demas se arregla.
