  1. I first saw this movie years ago as a teenager - I loved the idea of the 'ugly' duckling (with brains) metamorphosing into a beautiful (if not deadly) swan - all those extra curricular classes she took paid off (poisons, chemistry, acting and make-up)- and how!!! I think this was one of the last roles that Joe Flynn played before he died in a tragic pool accident - as a bumbling, inept surgeon whose primary function was the issuing of death certificates for his patients!! The manner in which Stockard dispatched her enemies was as artful and as witty as the persona beneath the plain initial exterior - the way she disposed of the people who caused her such emotional and phyiscal pain and was ingenious - drowning of her former fiance in the bathroom of their motel room, the bubble headed cheerleader who backflipped her way out of the dorm's upper floor's window, the medical intern who succumbed to fate by appendectomy amongst other equally gruesome (but very ingenious) methods for her tormentors, with Ed Asner as her law-enforcement nemisis who not only captured her but also her heart. I felt this was a movie for the underdog - a light at the end of the dark tunnel - that every (under)dog will have their day - although I'm not one to recommend murder as the way to deal with torment - it was nice to see that bullies dont always win in the end - and I'm glad to see that it finally made it to DVD!!!!

  2. This made-for-tv film is superb. It's a cheesy classic. Written by Joan Rivers and starring Stockard Channing. Anyone who was made fun of in High School and beyond will adorate this film. It's 'our' fantasy, played out on the tube. I loved it when released, I love it now. Some things never change: Like a good film. Buy and watch... Over and over......

  3. I searched for this for several years, and a couple years ago bought a bootleg version that was so incredibly poor, I couldn't even really hear or see most of it.

Still, it's a fantastic film. I remembered it from way back when it must have been on tv and I was just a kid. The somersault scene and the bathtub scene stayed with me for years. I was so glad to be able to see it again.

Although a bit dated, now, it still is remarkable. Stockard Channing, never known for her absolute beauty, plays the lead role of a young woman who is consistently treated terribly and hurt constantly. But, through a series of events, she turns from unattractive and unwanted to beautiful and desired. With this, however, comes a transformation of character. Confidence is good, yes, but revenge? Probably not.

Despite the fact that Channing isn't doing "good", so to speak, Channing really plays this role well. While she takes revenge on everyone who has hurt her, you still are cheering for her. Ed Asner is on to her, though, as the tough-but-sympathetic detective.

Yes, although this has many comedic elements, I wouldn't just say it was a black comedy. Believe it or not, it's also a love story. And, though it's funny, it's also terribly sad. Definitely worth seeing if you haven't seen it.

  4. I've been looking for this movie for many years and finally found it on Amazon. The quality of the DVD is good, despite the original being a made-for-TV movie from a looooong time ago. So glad it was available here.

  5. I love this movie since the first time I saw it, back when it first came
out. I have been looking for soooo long, and I just knew that Amazon.com
would have it so I just tried yestersday and sure enough they did, so I
ordered it and it will probaly come tomorrow. I can't wait to see it but I still remember what the movie is all about, the best part is at the end what a shocker Stockard Channing was great. I just have to say I loved
the way she changed sooo much it was incredible.

  1. I love this DVD!
I coach a 6th grade all-girl squad an the Cheer DVD has been a lifesaver for me. I'm having shoulder surgery in weeks and I will not be capable of teaching my girls motions;cheers;chants or any dances for weeks and this product has really pulled through for me!

    Thanks for saving me!

  2. Great video for beginning cheerleaders or new coaches. Gives detailed instruction on cheer basics (motions etc.) Also has some great simple cheers/chants and sidelines every squad can use.

  3. My girls needed instruction on how to do proper jumps and they needed a hip hop routine. They loved it and when they performed for their school, they got a standing ovation.

  4. this is a fairly good video. I wish it had more actual cheers and more cheers that we could actually use. I did like the motions part. This is good for beginners.

  5. This DVD was very useful to me when I started coaching. It shows details about basic cheerleading motions and instructions for keeping training safe. There is abonus segment about signs and dance as well.
    I recommend it for beginners.

5 comments about A Face in the Crowd.
  1. Great social commentary. Terrific story. Super casting. Outstanding direction. Superb acting.

  2. Once upon a time, oh, about 1957, in the far-off northeastern corner of Arkansas lived a princess, Marcia Jeffries, who has a radio show. She calls it "A Face in the Crowd" because she believes she can coax "talent" from anyone.

One day she goes to the county jail for that face which, it turns out, belongs to Larry Rhodes. He speaks right up and says, "What's in it for me?," a phrase that becomes his magic words. She gives him the luminous name Lonesome Rhodes and puts him on her morning show where he becomes an immediate local hit. Here on radio he proves he can get people to do outrageous things just by asking. Lonesome has the stuff, star quality, and becomes a radio personality. No need of wands for Lonesome--he has his own magic: the raw vitality of animal magnetism even sight unseen.

Before long Marcia and Lonesome go to Memphis for his own television show.
On their way there, she learns he is really a warty toad inside that Prince Charming disguise, but as a princess is wont to do, she ignores it. In Memphis Lonesome is growing in influence and growing to fit inside that influence. He brings a black woman off the streets and asks the television audience to help raise money to rebuild her burned down house. More than enough money is raised. It's a magic kingdom, television is, with all kinds of far-reaching influence.

Lonesome proves he can sell anything his way-- by belittling the product or boosting the product. He becomes a "wielder of opinion, a man of influence, a strong hand of the elite to guide the masses," and is backed by a maker of presidents. At this point the toad has shed that skin to become a troll.

Meanwhile, what has happened to Princess Marcia? Who is the real knight who comes to the rescue? And what happens to that troll?

"A Face in the Crowd" is one of the most overlooked films about media manipulation, misuse and abuse of the power of mass appeal by a television personality, a dark look at behind-the-scenes television. What could have been a magic kingdom is twisted by the corruption of power into desolation.

The acting is mesmerizing, with kudos going to Andy Griffith as Lonesome Rhodes and Patricia Neal as Marcia. New actor Walter Matthau excels as the intellectual writer behind the scenes, and Lee Remick as Everywoman in love with Lonesome Rhodes. Elia Kazan directs. The film should have been an Academy Award nominee, if not winner.

"A Face in the Crowd" is a must-see film and is as relevant today as the day it opened.

  3. Originally conceived as a warning of what was to come--the confluence of politics, business, and entertainment all through the sights and sounds of television--/A Face In The Crowd/ was originally brushed off by critics and viewers in the 1950s because "it wasn't realistic" (plus some Hollywood politics and reverse blacklisting probably didn't help). Nowadays, this movie is heralded as being prophetic, and in the commentary the screenwriter talks about how he's stopped in the street and told how great this movie is because it describes how things are -now-. The most backhanded compliment one can give to a prophet is to ignore him and then tell him he's right.

Andy Griffith is /excellent/ as a nihilistic conman looking for number one, perhaps too much so. Mr. Griffith claims in his interview that he got far too deep into character, and that's probably why ever since he's played good old Mayberry sheriffs--he's essentially a good man who's seen what bad men are, and he's shied away from it. I can respect him for that. I'll just go on the record as saying that his performance here is so good, so visceral, so -real- that he would've had a hard time topping it as a dramatic actor, and indeed his later history as a 'welcome friend in the TV' only gives this movie just that much more power.

  4. The performances of Andy Griffith, Patricia Neal, Walter Matthau, and the directive genius of Elia Kazan deserve resounding praise. "Lonesome Rhodes" is a far cry from The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock characters! And Walter Matthau--like Griffith's performance, just plain mindblowing! The range of these two actors leave me at a loss for words... Patricia Neal was always "on point" as an actress---one of the great ones. It's too bad that this movie fell under the radar back in its day--the Academy missed this one for sure! This cautionary tale is a timeless classic---you'll definitely want this one in your library!

  5. Not expecting such a ruthless character played by Andy Griffith, I was expecting a hard time "suspending belief".
The first time you see Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes in this movie, he is snarling, angry, and ready to lash out. He spends the rest of the movie trying to keep that part of his persona hidden. It comes out, usually in front of Marcia (Patricia O'Neal). "Aww, I was only kiddin' "
She believes him. We, the viewers, know better.
He has a disdain for people, and only cares for himself. Yet when he smiles and goes into his "Aw Shucks" mode you forget how evil he is.
I love the part where Paricia Neal says he was a hit on her radio show. He turns his head and spits.
His singing (Especially in the jail) is raw and sexual. Now, when I see Andy Taylor, I wonder how much he must despise Opie, or if he ridicules Aunt Bea when she is out of earshot.

He is definately worthy of all the adulation he gets from his TV work, but, I wonder how his career may have worked out if he passed on "The Andy Griffith Show" and stuck with movies.

5 comments about The Hot Chick.
  1. I'd give this two stars really, though I stuck an extra one in for Rob Schneider's performance.

Cheesy ancient treasure in modern times causing a 'body swap' between a middle aged man(criminal) and a high school girl(tramp). Until the actual 'body swap' happens, you'll have to put up with about 30 nearly intolerable minutes of high school cheerleader crap, watching girls go to the mall and shop and act like the complete airheads they are supposed to be. If you haven't turned it off by that point (it was a close thing for me) then it does actually start to get funny, once the 'accident' happens.

This movie is a light hearted comedy that doesn't take it self at all seriously and can be amusing to watch in the same way that other Sandler/Schneider films have been. Though I wouldn't consider it one of the better of the "Happy Madison" productions; its forgettable.

  2. As utterly uninspired and ridiculous as `The Hot Chick' is (and what Rob Schneider movie isn't utterly ridiculous) I couldn't help but find it funny. Sure, none of the laughs are really original and none of them are smart or witty in the way that some newer comedies have been but `The Hot Chick' will succeed it smacking your funny bone around quite a bit. It's stupid humor, and as can be assumed by the main star and the subject matter it's going to be `dirty' humor as well, but it's humorous and that's what counts.

The story revolves around rich snob Jessica and petty thief Clive who magically switch places after a pair of cursed earrings cross their paths. I know, I know, the beginning is a total `Mummy' rip off but come on, it's stupid yet funny. Anyways, with this pair of earrings in their possession (each has one half of the set) they wake up in the others body and that's when everything hits the fan. Clive is happy with his newfound situation since he realizes he can use Jessica's body to make much more money but Jessica is devastated to wake up in Clive's body (who wouldn't be) and so she enlists the help of her best friend April and a slew of other girls to get her old body back.

This is far from an original idea and the funny is far from fresh, but it's still extremely funny. It's predictable as all get out but it's mindless fun and sometimes you just want to sit back, turn off the brain and soak in the funny.

Rob Schneider is not the most talented actor or even the funniest comedian but here he does serve up laughs effectively. I just love Anna Faris. She has that whole `sweet girl' shtick brilliantly and while this is not her best performance it is still delightful. Michael O'Keefe and Melora Hardin are effective as Jessica's troubled parents who look to their mysterious gardener (Clive, er um, Jessica) for advise. The rest of the cast is hot or miss and no one else really has enough screen time to justify a shout out but no one takes away from the film and Adam Sandler's cameo is quite memorable and entertaining.

So, it's not perfect, not even close, but as far as commercial comedies go it's worth watching at least once. Just know not to expect anything revolutionary or thought provoking, but I'm sure that you can ascertain that by the cover of the DVD, let alone the name that occupies the `starring' slot.

  3. Yes, as many have pointed out, The Hot Chick is a stupid movie with a stupid plot. However, if you are looking for some outrageous laughs, this is the DVD for you.

Rob Scheider is cute, funny and his performance is a scream. I am not sorry I purchased it. So, sue me.

  4. Here is a movie that not only is funny but I thought relatively wholesome in its message. I was really impressed with Rob's acting. He really engendered the qualities of each personality to a T. I think switcheroo movies are great exercises for actors to stretch their abilities. Too bad Rob other movies other than the first Duce Bigalow have not been as good. The Hot Chick however is one I can watch over and over again and profusely enjoy.

  5. It's hard to put this any other way, The Hot Chick is one of worst movies in the history of cinema. Frankly, I'm amazed that any serious actor would even give this pile of garbage a second look, and since Rachel McAdams and Anna Farris are the only serious actresses - and that's being quite generous - it's clear that everyone involved is either a career masochist, or completely oblivious to how bad the idea for this movie was when they read the script. And if it's the latter, then they have the decision making skills of an infant.

The plot of this movie - and I'm using the words plot and movie loosely - is based off of the tired storyline where one person has their personality switched with another. In this case, it's an incompetent male theif (Rob Schneider) being switched with the typical, prettiest girl in the class (Rachel McAdams) who also happens to be heinously mean.

It's up to the girl (Schneider) and her/his friends to find out how and with whom the switch took place. Unfortunately, the people behind this travesty decided it would be a good idea to have Rob Schneider not only dress in women's clothes, but also chose a size that would only have worked if he were 50 lbs. lighter. Aside from that, the movie is awkward in that "accidentally waving to someone who's waving to someone behind you" sort of way. From nail-painting scenes, pillow fights, and an entire movie full of scenes of a 40-year old guy hanging out with three teenage girls, it just fails on every single possible level.

The most preposterous part of the entire movie is the fact that a teenage girl goes missing for an entire week, and her parents hardly even notice.

I'm sure there's a message in there, a completely insane message of tranny-acceptance or something like that, and an completely failed attempt at cohesion, but I started to feel nauseous after about 30 minutes of seeing Schneider's ugly mug in Hello Kitty t-shirts; so, I obviously had to fight through the rest of the trainwreck.

5 comments about Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
  1. Yes, I know it came out in 1992, but it has that 80s feel to it. No cell phones in the whole movie!

Back to the movie: looking for a new addiction? Watch this movie and then the 7 season TV series -- very well written.

  2. When I first saw this movie in high school, I thought it was pretty bad. Cheesy acting, ham-fisted storytelling and too over-the-top to really appreciate. Then, in recent years, my girlfriend really got me to start watching the Buffy TV show, which I really enjoy, and that inspired me to go back and give the movie another try. While still not a GOOD movie, per se, it's better than I remember. You can see how the core of Joss Whedon's character was here, and even a few snippets of his trademark dialogue, and you can see the fingerprints of where the director fouled things up. Still not great, but as a historical footnote in the annals of a great TV show, this movie is interesting at least.

  3. "I had written this scary film about an empowered woman, and they turned it into a broad comedy. It was crushing."--Joss Whedon.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer film led to the darker and much more popular Buffy The Vampire Slayer TV series. The movie (a barely-watchable parody of clichéd horror films) falters in all the ways the TV series kicks ass. Joss Whedon wrote the screenplay for the 1992 film, and was the creator, executive producer, and screenwriter for the 1997-2003 TV series. He has always stated that the TV series was closer to his vision of Buffy than the movie. I have given the movie a two-star rating when measured against the five-star TV series. The film is arguably little more than a minor chapter in the "Buffyverse canon," and the best thing I can say about it is that it opened the door to the Buffy Universe.

By now the film's plot is probably familiar to everyone. The film introduces the world to Buffy Summers (Kristy Swanson), a spunky "valley girl" cheerleader at Hemery High School in Los Angeles. She is approached by a mystery man in a trenchcoat named Merrick Jamison-Smythe (Donald Sutherland), who informs her that she is a "Slayer," a young woman destined to fearlessly fight vampires. Because she has dreamt of slaying vampires, she accepts her role as The Slayer, and completes a brief training before fighting the neighborhood bloodsuckers, including Lothos (Rutger Hauer), who has earned a reputation for killing Slayers. After Lothos kills Merrick, Buffy fights him at the senior dance, which sets the stage for Whedon's television series ("High school as a horror movie") starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. The film, though predictable, made me laugh a few times. As Buffy, Kristy Swanson is no Sarah Michelle Gellar. Paul Reubens, Luke Perry, Hilary Swank, David Arquette, Ben Affleck, and Ricki Lake all play supporting characters in the film. Overall, Buffy the film is mostly horrible.

    G. Merritt

  4. I've always enjoyed vampire movies and as a kid this one was my favorite. Though its cheesy, i still like it.

  5. Really... what can you say about this movie? It is cheesy, not well acted, and not well scripted... but indeed, it is a load of fangs and fun (be sure to notice Ben Affleck's small part on the basketball court).

5 comments about Death of a Cheerleader (True Stories Collection TV Movie).
  1. I think Tori Spelling is way better suited for roles like Donna Martin in 90210. She's spunky and hilarious in real life, and so was Donna. I don't think she's good at the dramatic bitch character. Regardless, if you can overlook the iffy acting on her part, the movie is very good. So many girls are teased mercilessly in high school, and just want to belong. Angela, the self-tortured student played by Kellie Martin (who does a much better job acting) decides that she will go to any lengths to be included in the popular crowd, resorting to murder. Despite this being a true story and probably a rare occurrence, the message is clear: kids need to be nicer to each other and just let people be who they are. Cliques and stereotypes tear people down and make school years miserable. Tweens and teens should see this movie.

  2. Kellie Martin puts in an absolutely brilliant performance as the desperate-to-be-accepted outcast. Tori Spelling is wonderful as the golden girl who seems to have it all, because she fits in with what others prize, including the alleged adults who run the show.

What is so sad here is that Kellie Martin's character is the one with the talent and drive. If she had not been pushed over the edge by the taunting of others and her childlike need for approval, life would have ultimately proven her to be the success.

Kellie Martin's performance is so on-target that at times it is agonizing (and embarrassing) to watch. The subtle changes of emotion on her face during the principal's "be the best" speech should have won her awards.

If you are a fan of Lifetime movies, Death of a Cheerleader definitely belongs in your collection.

  3. GREAT,DRAMATIC FILM!!! I AM A LIFETIME MOVIE LOVER AND I WAS GLAD TO HAVE ORDERED AN ORIGINAL FILM..GOOD ACTING AND HORSEFACE SPELLING WAS NOT ALL THAT BAD....

  4. Mediocre acting and script, bad treacly music, Tori Spelling looks like she's in her late 30's and she's playing a sophomore.

  5. This movie definately falls in the 'It's so bad, it's good' category. Tori Spelling's portrayal of Stacey Lockwood is so awful that it is funny. Kellie Martin and Valerie Harper are also in this. It's a fun movie for a fun night in with the girls.

  1. I love to hate this damn movie. Sure it was nice and pleasant the first two go rounds but now I'm sick of it. I'd rather watch any of the Spider-Man movies twice than this load of bullocks.

I appreciate it because Blaque a fun R&B-Pop band that is in hiding these days, Elisha and Gabrielle are in it. But that's not enough.

It's cheesy, and just plain stupid. A few studs are also in it which is cool. But that's where the fun ends.

  2. There have been three other Bring it On movies and none of them even touch the original. It's such a feel good movie and I'm glad I got the dvd for all the behind-the-scenes stuff.

  3. Bring It On is a chick flick, that guys can enjoy. The hot chicks includeing Claire Kramer and Kristen make this movie. Not only that but it's funny as hell and has a great plot. First time director Peyton Reed handled the film very well and even though he didn't have another hit film until 2006's The Break Up this is still his best.

  4. this movie was actually pretty good. you would think a cheerleader movie would suck, well this movie proofs wrong. this movie was pretty good.

  5. I kind of love and hate Bring It On starring Kristen Dunst. Parts of this teen flick are clever and funny but after a few viewings of this film, you get pretty sick of all the cheerleading nonsense. Cute chick flick but fades with time, decide for yourself.

5 comments about Starsky & Hutch (Widescreen Edition).
  1. Big screen remakes of 70's sitcoms have given us "modern kids" a chance to enjoy some bellbottom antics that we otherwise would have missed out on. With a star-studded cast lead by Ben Stiller (Starsky) and Owen Wilson (Hutch), this film calls to all who are ready to be launched into ha-ha arcadia.
The stage is set right after you are introduced to the dynamic duo. Stiller is an uptight cop who serves the law to the utmost. Wilson is a laid back cop who just wants to take it easy. Let's pair them together! Holy, freaking-f! Where did they get that idea? It's awesome!
As the film builds up momentum with a prodigious and inexhaustible stream of jokes we meet Huggy Bear played by rapper Snoop Dogg. Why isn't this man in more movies? His acting is absolutely awe-inspiring (except that it is bad and I don't care for it much at all). In the 90's he popularized the alcoholic drink "gin and juice" and taught us that "endo" is the best marijuana to smoke. Now, in 2004, he is stupefying audiences with his rigmarole on the big screen. Boy how the times change. Speaking of change, let's not forget the antagonist, a villainous drug dealer named Reese Feldman, played by Vince Vaughn. Let me tell you straight up: this is not the Vaughn of old. Long gone is the quick-witted fun time swinger who gave a fairly decent vocabulary base to a generation of young hipsters. To make sure you're not confused, the character displays his wrathfulness early so you don't cry when/if he gets busted. How? One, he has a moustache. Two, he kills guys that loose his coke and doesn't even care about it. Three, he never says "that's money," "hey, you are money tonight," or "sexy babies for me and for you that are money." F that guy! I kept thinking throughout the whole film: you are sooooo busted in 70 minutes. So what about the plot? Basically, Starsky and Hutch somehow must find the bad guy through a tangled web of ridiculous humor, mishaps and total babes. If you were smart enough to figure out how to operate the DVD player you can see the jokes coming from a mile away. The real mystery I'll leave you with is this; can the two cops see through their differences to form a law enforcement juggernaut (like Robocop but with less buffoonery) and a possible lasting friendship in 90 minutes?
On a personal level after seeing this film I really wished that Owen Wilson was my bro, that guy would be awesome to do the "what's up" thing with.
Modern day filmmakers have somehow managed to take their non-creativity to a whole new level, much the same as Puff Diddy does with music. If you have lost your creative go ahead and take an idea that has already been done, inject a bunch of your own non-creative and you will have teens and adults alike reiterating phrases like "do it, do it" until the Knight Rider movie comes out. I personally can't wait till I'm 40 and I see the remake of Wayne's World.
Grade D+; wait to spend your money on the remake of Wayne's World (hopefully staring our friend Wayne).
    -Green

  2. I can't really say how this movie compares to the popular T.V. show from the 1970s. I was only 6 years old in 1975, and STARSKY & HUTCH came on after my bedtime. I may have seen a couple of episodes, but all I remember vividly is the trademark red Grand Torino with the white stripe.

Insofar as the car is concerned, it has been resurrected for the current movie. I am inclined to believe that the humor of the movie is much more of the slapstick variety than any humor displayed in the T.V. series. There is one curious aspect about this remake, however: unlike most remakes, this one takes place in its original epoch of the 1970s as opposed to being an "updated" rendition that takes place in the present day.

By far & away the weakest part of the movie is the inclusion of Snoop Dog. He is absolutely the worst actor that ever lived; every scene he is in, is like taking the air out of a balloon. Trying to teach him to act is like trying to teach an alligator to be a vegetarian. He is probably the most talentless self-made millionaire the world has ever seen - bar none. I would beg Snoop Dog to kindly disappear from the public eye - the world would be a better place for it.

I am puzzled as to why it went the route of being rated PG-13. After all, nobody under 35 would even be aware that there WAS an old T.V. show called STARSKY & HUTCH. It had some opportunities for gratiutous nudity that would have made it a good old-fashioned "R" Rated slapstick comedy. For some unknown reason, it shied away from this and ended up being a teaser flick.

As for the rest of the movie, it is OK. Nothing great, nothing terrible. For some, it might be nostalgic as it goes back to the 1970s. Other people, including me, will have nightmares about DISCO making a comeback (yikes!). If you pick up this DVD w/out expecting a whole lot, you should be fine.

  3. Hysterically funny, and you might feel dumber after you watch it, but it is a classic!

  4. Starsky and Hutch is more fun than it has any right to be, even if it does depart from the series in many ways. Stiller has Paul Michael Glaser's mannerisms down to a tee (he even has Glaser's bizarre run, like a hyperactive duck doing a windmill impersonation, down to perfection) but otherwise is another of his trademark anal neurotics while Owen Wilson takes Hutch even further away as a laid back dude not above a spot of robbery to supplement his salary. But it is funny, good natured and doesn't outstay its welcome too much. The only real bum note is giving the final glory to Snoop's terrible Huggy Bear, a charmless, boring and lazy performance constantly outshone by his own bodyguards.

  5. this movie is one of my all time favorites, i can watch it over and over again.

  1. IMHO, Tommy Lee Jones has never made a bad film. He's just too talented and has too much of a presence for anything that he's in to fail. I think we should all give thanks for that. If I was going to point out anything negative about TLJ is that he could not act his way out of paper bag.

A paper bag made out of toilet paper.

    Single-ply.

I mean, what the shiznit! He plays the exact same role in every movie. The stoic tough guy with an attitude and Wranglers that are a whisper too tight. You know what I'm talking about. My advice to you, Tommy? Get yourself to a community college immediately and take Acting 101, because brother, you can only go up. It's like Tommy, come on! Expand the repetoire a little bit.

Cedric is awesome as the fat guy.

  2. Having been a student at the University of Texas some years ago, I was more interested in how students would be portrayed in this film.

The "UT cheerleaders" were made to look as if they were inept and stupid. Their parts in the film reminded me of those "blond" jokes.

The movie is supposed to be a comedy. It did have some funny moments. I enjoy watchng Tommy Lee Jones in any genre of movie though. He is a very good actor. It was great to see him wearing a "TEXAS" shirt. Go Horns!!!

The Longhorn Band was great to listen to as well even though their appearance was brief.

    Over-all, this movie gets a "C"

  4. saw a crime now they have to live with this man. I've never seen the movie yet.

  5. There are movies released that are nothing more than formula films. Many critics chastise the film makers of these films for making what they consider drivel. The fact of the matter is that movie goers rather like these sorts of films, feeling somewhat comfortable with them. Such is the case with this movie.

Tommy Lee Jones stars as Roland Sharp, a Texas Ranger who has seen his partner shot down while trying to take in a witness who is shortly thereafter murdered. Shot in an alley, the murder is witnessed by a group of Texas college cheerleaders who then come under the protection of Sharp.

A fish out of water story unfolds as Sharp moves in with the girls in their house. Not only does he move in, he imposes restrictions and rules on the girls who revolt any chance they get. No cell phones, not going out and no dates lead to not only in house confrontation but having to track down anyone who escapes.

As Sharp does his best to protect the girls, the man responsible for killing the informant is revealed and he's tied into the criminal justice system. Eventually he WILL track down the witnesses and do his best to eliminate them. But with Sharp standing in his way, does he have a chance?

The movie plays off of the rigid character that Lee has played so many times before, most notable in THE FUGITIVE and its sequel U.S.MARSHALS. He is the tough looking tough guy who takes on all comers without batting an eye. And yet when faced with handling a group of young girls he may have met his match.

Along the way the girls learn a few things about themselves, turning out to not be the bubble headed bimbos that most cheerleaders are portrayed as (including first appearances here). And Sharp learns a few things to, like how to communicate with his daughter, a little about love and a tad about feminine hygiene.

Jones turns in a wonderful performance, showing a knack for comedy that was untouched until he hit the MEN IN BLACK films. Wasted is Cederic the Entertainer who is hyped as a major player and yet ends up in a minor supporting role. The same can be said of Anne Archer whose screen presence is VERY limited. The girls of the house? All are fantastic in the various roles that they play and the fun part of their being in this film will be waiting to see where they turn up again. All are lovely (a plus when playing a typical cheerleader) but they show more acting power than many would give them credit for.

This movie will not go down as a cinematic act of genius. But it will become a hit simply based on the fun loving appeal that it has to offer. This is a date movie that's safe to go to. It's a film that has enough laughs to make it worth spending the money on. And though while a bit formulaic, who says that's a bad thing?

  1. I can watch this movie over and over again. I have been watching it for years on VHS and just purchased on dvd great movie.

  2. Acid washed jeans, stiletto ankle boots, crimped hair; shallow teenage girls acting and dressing like h**kers -- that's the heart of this film. It is a Reagan-era monstrosity about a "nerd" (the extremely handsome and charismatic Patrick Dempsey...) abandoning his intellectual pursuits to chase some popular-girl tail. Actually, to buy off a girl who is a mental prostitute.

Oh -- but how convenient that in this totally inane fantasy world she actually turns out to be the one shallow girl with a heart of gold! And his plan just happens to work to turn him into the most popular kid in school! What is supposed to be at best a witty satire is more disgusting than what it purports to expose. John Hughes had already made a string of films that dispelled this kind of thinking, only to have it built up again.

  3. This has always been one of my fave 80's movies, but I feel it has less to do with true "love", than it does high school culture. It shows the cliques and the bulling and all the real high school garbage in a glossy way. I love the scene he makes in the cafeteria, it always touches me. This is a great show, but it's more about the politics of high school.

  4. I fell in love with this movie from the first time my brother rented it for me when I was in junior high. It's still one of my favorites!

  5. I showed this to my high school classes, and they loved it. We had a good discussion about taking action in your life even though there are risks, being yourself, navigating the cliques of high school and forming perceptions. Patrick Dempsey was masterful even as a kid; his fans will love this movie.
