- For those who want to learn an extensive set of exercises for each muscle group, this is the book. It illustrates every exercise it refers to and indicates the muscles affected. Moreover, the descriptions and illustrations are almost always on the same page for easy reference. Very useful for learning your set of routines and as a reminder before a training session.
- I liked reading this book but I don't know exactly how scientific some of the terms are; like when he calls people who jerk the weights around for high reps "pumpers." I usually refer to them as time wasters because they are injuries waiting to happen. The book does present you with modern training methods, but if I have to recommend one book.....Steve Reeves' new book "Building the Classic Physique" is still the best.
- This book has good detailed descriptions on every exercises and also has info on reps, restance training and how to recover from a workout. The exercise routines are a little out-dated.
- I have owned this book ever since it was first published. Periodically I give it to people asking for guidance on weight training. It is nicely comprehensive on the various exercises, giving the proper form and names of equipment, movements and such. The photos are 80's vintage and dated but the info is not. Training with free weights has not changed. The exercises that worked twenty years ago work just as well today.
-
This book has a nice collection of exercises, with photographs and detailed description on the proper execution techniques for each one of them. The detailed description on each exercise include: The muscles emphasized by the exercise, its starting position, movement performance, exercise variations and training tips.
One valuable aspect of this training book is that at the end of each chapter you will find a lot of routines from Professional bodybuilders and champs. Each muscle is treated with great detail in its own individual book chapter.
Since the Table of Contents is not included in the book information presented above by the seller, I am including how the book is organized, so everybody can visualize what topics are covered:
- Basic information.
- Biceps training.
- Chest training.
- Shoulder training.
- Back training.
- Thigh and hip training.
- Triceps training.
- Abdominal training.
- Calf, forearm, and neck training.
- Advanced training techniques.
- Glossary.
In summary, very useful manual, with lots of exercises and routines, and plenty of information on training techniques and principles as they apply to bodybuilding.

- These are advanced concepts about the game that Hinitz has broken down into the simplest form. Physical talent will only get you so far in any sport, then comes the mental game. Hinitz's approach will help you identify who you are in the game, where you are in the game, and where you want to go...then help you get there! Along with Brian Voss's foreward are helpful comments and views throughout the book of several other top pros. Read, enjoy, bowl better.
- I've attended bowling camp, had lessons, watched videos, regularly read Bowling This Month, have read a dozen books on bowling and this by far is the best. If you're looking for advice on the physical fundamentals of the game this is NOT the book for you, read John Jowdy's Bowling Execution. However, if you have shown signs of having a relatively sound physical game then Focused for Bowling is for you. It emphasizes developing your mental game, which any seasoned bowler will tell you is the key to consistency and success.
Why do some excel in the spotlight and others crack under pressure? Your mental game is the answer. There are many exercises and suggestions in this book that will help you develop a stronger mental game. There is even a section on dealing with slumps.
Two years ago I was developing into a pretty good bowler. I loved the moment of needing a turkey in the tenth to win; and I often delivered. Then I went into a terrible slump. I tried everything, over thought the game, became negative about my ability, and lost my confidence as the anchor of my team. This year I started regaining my old form, but was still inconsistent and found myself thinking too much. The final straw: I missed a seven pin in the tenth that cost us a game. I picked up this book and have been lights-out since. I bowled a 299 and have average a consistent 205 for the past 8 weeks.
Once you understand the physical aspects of the game, you must read Focused for Bowling!!!
- Dean Hinitz provides some clear solutions to one of biggest challenges to Scoring Success.
- This book also covers a lot of info that bowlers will need when they look to take their game to the next level.
- This book deals with the mental game of bowling. It evaluates how you are right now and gives you tips on how to prepare for each shot. The book has charts that you can copy and evaluate your where you think you're currently at. After you use the tips it suggests, you can reevaluate yourself in the future to see where you have improved. This book is a must have for the bower that wants to improve their game. I have applied the tips to my game and still continue to improve my overall scores and averages. I find that reading this book will give me a tremendous edge on my opponents when I bowl tournaments.
Go on and give it a try!

- This book delves into all aspects of the game, including history, popularity, basic and advanced techniques, official rules and scoring, etiquette, bowling language, equipment, and facilities. Both the novice and experienced bowler will discover helpful hints to assist them in correcting faults in their approach or delivery and adjusting to differences in lane conditions, with some thoughts on strategies and points of concentration for competitive bowling.
Joan Martin taught bowling at the University of Wisconsin and at UCLA for over twenty years. Ruth Tandy first taught bowling in an antiquated facility with "grooved" lanes and no pinsetters! She has taught bowling at the Ohio State University lanes and at the Texas Woman's University. Charlene Agne-Traub has taught bowling in five states over the past twenty-one years and has coached both men's and women's teams.

- Whenever you are bowling with poor results and cannot figure out the problem, just take this book out of your bowling bag and read "Analyzing Your Flaws" or the chapter on lane conditions. It feels like you're carrying around your bowling guardian angel when in competition. And when you leave the 10 pin, the book says you DO adjust. How you adjust depends on what kind of 10 pin you left: ringing, flat, etc. I LOVE this book.
- The basic message was "trial and error" which, while it may be true, gives the reader no foundation upon which to build. Over and over, the authors related how professionals might approach a certain shot but that we needed to use trial and error to find how we should hit it, rather than to give some solid principle to begin to build our own process.
- My son's scores have been movin' on up. He is having more 200 games and is even a USBC 11 strikes in a row winner. (279 game) Really something to be proud of. I think others will learn some tips too. I think you'll be happy to "spare" some dough for this book.
- Book was close, it provided a little technical aide but mostly the author's personal style.
- I have only read the first two chapters but already I have found 5 things that I know I am doing wrong. I couldnt understand why it was happening, but now I know.
Cant wait to read the rest and see how I go on my next league night.
It might be from 1989 and it might still talk about urethane balls, but the basics are still the same.
Additional (Edited 7/3/2008)
I wish i had finished the book earlier. On my first night i tried to change too much at once and it wasnt till the 4th game when i just changed one thing and things came good.
The following week after finishing the book and reading that it says not to try to change everything at once, i added one new change to the existing change from the previous week and creamed my opposition.
Am back to my best, Great book!

- What I really didn't like about this book is the constant rambling after starting the topic sentence in a paragraph. Which never concluded any information on the topic. Then instead of going over all the variations of an approach, he makes it quite clear that this should be the method for every bowler. In my opinion bowling involves individuals, and on mans view will not work for every bowler. It would be more helpful if he used his insight in bowling on how to work with the different variations that you can see in bowling.
- of all the bowling books i've flicked through, Jowdy's was the most contemporary for addressing the advances in today's game, and the content is geared towards bowlers who want to improve upon their existing knowledge and understanding of modern bowling techniques. it is not written for the beginner, and it assumes some prior knowledge to be built upon. i read the book in one sitting, and it consolidated all the info i had been gleaning from various sources on the net and from other bowlers and coaches over the years. As for the content, all the info is there, and the descriptions are sufficient if you can visualise what he is writing about, which isn't difficult with some of the basic drills he explains. Some of the tips in this book are invaluable and it is the first place i go to clarify some element of my game when it goes off the boil.
- I recommend this book for anyone who wants to improve their score. Great helpful hints and information.
- This book is a good addition to any bowling library. Although I'm always looking for that "magic bullet" on the release, which I did not find here, the book covers most aspects of sound bowling with much technical detail.
- I have 2 complaints. 1 about the delivery , the other one is about the condition of the book.
I understand that amazon has no influence about the delivery. I chose usps as my delivery carrier, somehow they delivered the packaga at the wrong address. It took 2 additional weeks to sort things out and they I has the book in my possesion.
The condition of the book is ok, I think they do not sell this item often, so at the side of the book there were some dust spots, most were easily removed, there is still 1-2 spots left that I have to be more carefull with on the removal process.
Minus the delivery issue I am satisfied with the whole process,
Leopold

- Worth the price just for the photographs. Unlike other books on bowling, each of the 160 8-1/2 x 11 pages is in full glossy color (watch out for fingerprints on the paper!), including many excellent photos and graphics. The layout makes it easy to flip through the pages and get a feel for the sport of bowling without even reading the text.
As for the subject matter, this book is also very different. The two best books on bowling that I'm familiar with (Par Bowling and Knowledge is the Key) take a systematic approach. This book reads more like a personal lesson on bowling by Parker Bohn III, along with other top professional bowlers. Of course it is also more up-to-date, focusing on the issues that are important to today's bowlers. The book's coverage is broad, including equipment, strategy, and the mental game, along with fundamentals and an interesting history of the sport. The section on spare shooting is particularly useful, since it focuses on the hard-and-straight method used by most top players, as opposed to the strikeline-relative approach presented in other books. The downside is that the discussions do not contain the kind of detail that would be necessary to learn to bowl from the text alone, making this book best suited for intermediate players. Then again, the best way to learn to bowl is from a coach, not a book. Advanced bowlers may learn a few things too, but are probably better served by specialized publications such as "Bowling this Month" magazine. Finally, this is a must-have for left-handed bowlers. It is the first book I have seen that gives lefties equal treatment in discussions and diagrams, instead of telling southpaws to "just reverse it in their heads" (Parker is a lefty himself). Bottom line: if you are looking for a textbook on bowling, this is not it. But, if you want to learn about the sport as it is played by the best in the world, buy this book!
- Just saw Parkers book for the first time and it is a great book. The pictures are alone worth the price of the book. Having met Parker is class with a capitol C. Parker is the nicest person you will ever meet. I can see why this book is written so well it does come across as being cocky or do it my way or the highway. I feel this book took time to write and is written very well. Hope you feel the same way as well after you read the book. Keep winning out on tour Parker.
- As with all things, the key is in the title. This book does a sound job in giving you the fundamental keys to mastering your game. For those looking to perfect their game, look to an established, reputable coach. As with all text books in learning, the basics are given and it is up to you to apply them under the watchful eye of someone who has already ascended to the top. People graduate from programs every day with all the info and skills required to be the best at what they are about to do, but they still train with others who have been doing the same job in order to perfect, mold, tweak what they have learned in the textbooks and classroom.
This book provides illustrations and keys that you need to master your game. What you do with that infomation will determine whether or not you truly master your game.
~Tex McFaden
- very informative book with great diagrams and pictures. even though parker is a lefty the book really explains bowling from both hands. one of the better books i have read so far.
- Every so often you order something based on its description or a review and that thing winds up being BETTER than you thought it was going to be. This is a case of that scenario right here. Clear, non-technical explanations and instructions, GREAT illustrations and photographs to show what the instructor is talking about, and enough material to allow you to grow in your pursuit of bowling perfection and STILL want to go back and reference this book occasionally. I can't recommend this one enough.

- This book is really helpful and well organized. It's easy to find topics you need to read/reread!
- Step by step with pictures for the beginner as well as the intermediate bowler. I have improved my recent consistancey with the timing & release sectiions. Well worth the time & money to analzye your current bowling techniques.
- Most of the people that previously reviewed this book gave it a good rating and that's ok. I found the section on how to practice informative but for the most part the author just rants about topics that are of no importance to the reader. I read Bowling Fundamentals before reading and there is no comparison between the two. Again there a couple of sections that are ok but for the most part this book is poorly written. He should have just written a how to instead of listing 101 most common mistakes that he thinks people make, don't waste your money on this book.
- Purchased this for my wife for obvious reasons. She is enjoying it and says it is informative. Results? Will have to wait a bit longer.
- My wife bought me this book for Christmas and it took me a few weeks before I picked it up and read it. Boy, what a great Christmas gift! This book has helped me correct most of the mistakes I made naturally and now I am consistently obtaining scores of 200+, I was rolling a 153 average before I started to apply the techniques described.
This book isn't really written for the beginning bowler, which I found refreshing and suited me perfectly.

- This is a great book for both the beginner bowler and a great review for the bowler wanting to increase score. A must read helps a bowler get rid of bad habit that many bowlers pick up over the course of a season of bowling.
- This is a very good book for beginning bowlers. Detailed charts explain how to adjust the starting position to correct missed shots. There is also a very explanation of the importance of walking a straight line to maintain a correct angle. There are also helpful tips on timing, form, etc. and a chapter on understanding scoring and league terminology.
- I ordered three books on bowling and this one by Michelle Mullen is the best of the three. After reading this book I went out and shot games of 199 and 200+, it's the truth. If you want to improve your game or are looking for some good advice then definitely buy this book. I don't recommend buying "From Gutter balls to Strikes" because the author doesn't know how to write a book. He claims to provide you with 101 of the most common mistakes but for the most part it's not good advice. Stick with "Bowling Fundamentals" and you will be fine.
- If you've never been taught the basics of bowling and want to brush up and improve your scores, or if you are a beginner, this book is worth reading. The book is pretty short and it is an easy read, although the author is a bit repetative at times. It has easy to follow diagrams that also are helpful. I average in the low 200's and I was able to pick up a few tips that have enabled me to become more consistent.

5 comments about Boxer's Start-Up: A Beginner's Guide to Boxing (Start-Up Sports series).
- This is a great book for anyone interested in learning to box, as well as for martial artists interested in more practical striking and footwork.
If you're serious about learning to do it right though, find a qualified trainer. Books are great supplements to qualified instruction, but even well written ones like this can never replace it.
- I have previously thought that you simply can not learn a new physical skill by just reading a book. After being introduced to Boxer's start-up my opinion has changed. The book is filled with exellent photography to support the text, and you really can learn the techniques from just reading the book!
The book can be divided into three parts. The first part covers about 100 pages, and it is the actual instructional part of the book. It covers everything from the ground up (boxing gear, stance & footwork, the punches, punching combinations, hitting the bag, defense & counters, sparring, and so on). The second part is really just one chapter, and it covers the essential history of boxing, including the greatest fighters. The third part is shortened version of the author's diary, covering his experiences on learning to box. This part is about 35 pages long, and it's a matter of taste if this is too much. On the other hand, you don't learn much from reading this, but on the other hand it is fun to read other beginner's experiences. In conclusion, I have to say that I was impressed with this book. It's amazing how good an intruction you can get from reading a book. Compared to the instruction I got from my beginner's boxing class, I think I learned more from this book.
- I really liked this book.
The first 2 chapters are an introduction to boxing and what equipment you'll need as you go deeper into training. Chapter 3 through chapter 10 are the fundamentals - from stance (very important) through sparing. Each function and mechanic of a technique is described very well and great and useful detail is given. The section regarding wrapping your hands - don't worry too much if you don't get it here. It takes a while to figure out how to wrap. They have dvd's and videos dedicated to just wrapping your hands so don't stress out. The writing has personality and the teaching isn't preachy or too butch or too vague. It's a nice and easy introduction to the fundamentals. Again - this is a beginners guide and is really for the beginner - NOT exclusively as I got some good detail regarding throwing a hook punch. Also the pace of the book builds as your skill builds - the order of chapters and tools taught are exactly where they should be. Chapter 11 is a brief history of boxing which I enjoyed. Chapter 12 consists of the author's journal entries(a newcomer to boxing)- they are his first 6 months of lesson's with Alan Lachica - who sounds like one very cool guy and one of the best coaches out there for those interested in practicing the Sweet Science. Great book for the beginner
- This was a really easy read and enjoyable book. The points and presentation are first class and explained very well.
On the whole a really good introduction to Boxing and its nuances.
- This is hands down the best boxing book i've ever read! not to vague like most boxing instuction books. i recommend it to all my students as a guide. if you like this book i strongly encourage you to consider fighting fit. it's the sequel to boxer's start-up. both books don't take anything for granted. it's easy to follow, filled with practical advise and in perfect sequence. buy this book!!
