5 comments about My Boys: The Complete First Season.
- If you're a lifelong Chicagoan AND a Chicago Cubs fan like me, this is definitely a show for you! Not only is this show one of the best written on the air right now, creator and writer Betsy Thomas must be a native because every other line is a deep down reference to Chicago and it's surrounding areas. I mean, come on - sushi bars in Skokie's Old Orchard area? Pizza and chicken wings on Southport?? Peter, Paul and Mommy in Elgin??? The Sybaris in Northbrook???
Also, for a show shot in LA, they've got Chicago's Wrigleyville down pat to ever square inch! They've gotta be doing at least a few exterior location shoots. These "sets" are too perfect.
But don't let my second city bias delude the fact I also feel this is a brillaintly executed show! The writing is top-notch, Jordana Spano is perfectly cast as the tomboy Chicago Sun-Times sports writer (who covers the Cubs!) and has friends who are not only locals, but talk with local accents! Spano's character "PJ" is the heart of this show and someone any guy can fall in love with at a moment's notice, whether a baseball fanatic like she is or not.
I'm hooked, just like anyone else watching this fantastic comedy will be!
- I loved the first season of My Boys, and I'm enjoying the second just as much. The writing is excellent and the chemistry between the cast is fantastic. PJ is one of the first relatable female characters I've seen on TV.
- I got to see this show on a weekend marathon at TBS and loved it. I don't get that station where I live because I reside outside the USA, so I hadn't seen it before, but got determined to get it when it came out. Now I am a proud owner of a great show that I hope lasts a long time. I find it funny, entertaining and very relaxing. Oh, and the characters are a good ensamble, each bringing something interesting to the show.
- A must have for those looking for a comical true to life story. A tomboy personality girl named Pj tries to keep both a social life and at the same time hang out with her four close friends and older brother. The only guide to her feminine side is her friend Stephanie who is more girl than the norm. The first season trails through with Pj just trying to find a man who can adapt to her unusual environment of close friends.
You wont regret the purchase, I still watch this non stop to this day =)

4 comments about Bull Durham (20th Anniversary Edition).
- If you've never seen "Bull Durham" before, and are tempted to write it off as another sports flick, I beg you to rethink your position. Let me tell you my all-time favorite sports movie: "Hoop Dreams". What about it resonates with me so strongly? It's not a basketball movie --- instead, it is a character drama that just happens to exist within a basketball court. In other words, where the story takes place is irrelevant; what dominates the picture is how the story (or real-life events) affects the characters (documentary subjects).
"Bull Durham" might not belong in the realm of that classic, but skeptics shouldn't dismiss it simply because it involves baseball. Overlookers won't realize that it's a funny exploration of how people discover their own ambition; the dirt diamond & ball are circumstantial.
The story begins when a minor league team is joined by veteran catcher Crash Davis (Kevin Costner). Crash has been given the unenviable task of mentoring an immature pitcher whose deadly fastball "couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat". Tim Robbins plays the pitcher, Eddie Laloosh. Eddie soon takes the nickname "Nuke"; Crash decides "Meat" is a better way to condescend the undisciplined rookie.
Let me pause there, because this sound like we're going to get a fairy tale of how a cynical teacher and hotshot student will become better humans by the end of their journey. Thankfully, writer-director Ron Shelton was much smarter than this, and doesn't treat his story like a whimsical children's book. Crash and Nuke engage in some of the harshest (and funniest) banter in the history of comedies; the only times either learns anything from each other is because one just can't deal with the tension and submits. I won't give anything away, but if you've never seen this movie before, you'll thank me later when Nuke shakes off Crash's pitching calls --- twice! If for whatever reason you don't like Costner or Robbins, their perfect chemistry will change your mind. It's been 20 years since "Bull Durham", and both actors have rarely been better.
When this unbearable pairing of Crash & Nuke begins, they soon meet Annie Savoy (Susan Sarandon). Annie is a strange blend of sexual creature and muse. She takes one player per season, and selects that player as her mate and student. In the hands of another actress or director, this would come off as sleazy & trashy. But once Annie begins to make her new choice stimulate his mind with poetry BEFORE satisfying his primal urges, it becomes clear that eroticism is not even a factor. You know, when I think of Sarandon, "sexy" is not the first word to come to my mind. But "Bull Durham" convinced me otherwise. Just look at the boxart! But then wait until you watch the performance: it's a treasure from her opening monologue to the emotional finale!
What results from the Crash/Nuke bickering, Annie's sensual tutoring, their bizarre triangle, and the adventurous Durham Bulls season is a movie that is achingly funny...but then Shelton gently pulls the curtain back to reveal some more layers.
I forgot the mention the Durham Bulls team name earlier because they're not the primary focus. I haven't revealed many plot points because the plot's mostly in the background. I can't recall any 'BIG GAMES' or 'TWISTS'. Hell, there's hardly any baseball for the last 30 minutes of the picture! What "Bull Durham" leaves with viewers are the characters & the little details. We don't care which games the Bulls won, but we remember the teammates' weird superstitions & conversations. Annie's teachings are incredibly silly, but she eventually acknowledges how ridiculous some of her behavior is. The three principals do discover their dreams, but in a most unlikely way. The romance is sweet, patient, and believable offbeat. Best of all, "Bull Durham" works on all paces --- it speeds up to make us laugh, and still keeps our attention when it slows down for reflection.
"Bull Durham" is a hard movie to describe because there's really nothing else like it. Ron Shelton has created a small-town comedy that resembles something from Frank Capra's mind. It's as much a celebration of life as it is a parody of it. There are no grossout gags; just strong acting and intelligent writing. The game of baseball is merely a catalyst of more meaningful ideas. But have no fear: there's plenty of baseball comedy for sports buffs.
"Bull Durham" includes the good times of a "movie", but earns its place as a "film" --- the perfect balance of entertainment and genius!
EXTRAS
This new DVD won't come out until March 18th. Here's what's been advertised:
* Audio Commentary from director Ron Shelton
* Audio Commentary from Kevin Costner and Tim Robbins
* "The Greatest Show On Dirt" featurette - Twenty years later the cast, crew and fans remember Bull Durham
* "Diamonds In The Rough" featurette - Explores minor league baseball
* "Between The Lines: The Making Of Bull Durham" featurette
* "Kevin Costner Profile"
I'll come back and review these special features. Just looking at these Extras convinces me that the earlier DVD release will soon be obsolete.
- Bull Durham is still one of the best baseball movies made and a lot of that has to do with a cast that is unforgettable. They each customized their role and everything fit perfectlly.
- This is a great movie. Even though you may not be a fan of baseball I think you will enjoy it.
- Kevin Costner is one of the greatest actor's of our time, he can play any kind of part and make it totally believable, this is just on of his best.

- I LOVE this movie. Romantic, but not too sappy (guys will totally like it too). How cool that this one comes with the soundtrack!!
- I loved this movie when it first came out. (so does my boyfriend) And the soundtrack is really good. I highly recommend.
- It's not often my sports nut fiance and I agree on not only which movie to select, but whether or not it's actually good! Love and Basketball is one that we both really enjoyed. The film heats up both on and off the court- satisfying his need for slick b-ball moves and my quench for romance. Perfect flick for date night! The soundtrack is a great bonus.
- This movie was a really pleasant surprise. I hesitated seeing this movie because I thought it would be another guy sports movie but it came recommended by a friend. I rented it then ended up buying it. The storyline is great, the love story really sweet and the music even better than I thought as well. Highly recommend it!
- This is a classic movie. It's entertaining for both guys and girls and would be a cute to give as part of a Valentine's Day gift. My husband loves sports and enjoys watching the DVD, but I kept the soundtrack for me! Win/win!

5 comments about Cool Runnings.
- This is the story of the Jamaican bobsled team that made it to the Olympics. It is based on a true story.
Unfortunately, true or not, there are scenes you just don't want children to see, and we were prettty shocked that it was rated only PG.
We could maybe have lived with one character calling another "*ssh*le", but there is an extended scene in a bar, involving a bar fight, during which the drinking, name-calling and fighting in that scene bracket another scene in the mens room of the bar, where one of the characters looks into a mirror and says, over and over, " I'm a bad-*ss mother who don't take no cr*p off of nobody!"
If these don't bother you - or if your child is of an age where you feel it's ok for them to see these scenes - then "Cool Runnings" is an otherwise ok movie. But these scenes were of a magnitude that for us this movie was definitely not ok.

- no issues with this purchase. Got a little nervous because it didn't arrive until the day before Xmas, but otherwise fine.
- A Jamaican man has the dream to make it to the Olympics, and while he is the fastest runner in the Island nation, he is tripped and unable to win.
He finds out that there is another opportunity, and that is for a bobsled team, something Jamaica has never attempted because... who would ever dream of a team from a Caribbean Island that competes against the best of the best... they don't even know about snow!!!
John Candy is a retired Olympic gold medal winner and he lives in Kingston. The team enlists his services and soon we find ourselves witnessing a rather funny story of a group of athletes going to compete in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where cold is something beyond every conceivable idea of this group of four great athletes.
Simply, don't' miss this fun Caribbean story of the struggle to achieve greatness.
- This is such a great movie - I loved it in the theater and now my kids love it!

5 comments about Field of Dreams (Widescreen Two-Disc Anniversary Edition).
- I have loved this movie since the first time I saw it, my VHS tape broke I watched it some many times, so very glad it is out on DVD, If your fighting with your son and he is old enough to understand, tie him to a chair and make him watch this movie with you so someday it's not to late to make up or make piece with your son for what ever reason, because in real life dad can not come back to ease his pain or yours.
- I just watched "Field of Dreams" for the very first time tonight on cable. My Dad died this past November and for whatever reason, I felt compelled to watch this movie tonight. Now after doing so, I know I will be ordering it from Amazon.com. What a beautiful, moving movie this was! People talk about it like it is about a son and his Dad. But it can just as easily be about a daughter and her Dad ... like it was for me. I remember when it first came out; I wasn't interested in seeing it as it was just a baseball movie. I found out tonight that it is so very much more than just that. Check it out and be sure to bring a big box of kleenex!
- I love baseball and have a great relationship with my father, yet found this to be one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
1. Ridiculously convoluted plot. It had promise for about 10 minutes then completely fell apart. Ease his pain? Seriously. What did Burt Lancaster's and James Earl Jones' characters have anything to do with the movie? Was Jones written into the plot just to spew off a few contrived lines about baseball? And the doctor "crossing the line" scene was a joke at best. The entire point of the plot was to somehow lead to father and son playing catch. Wow, what a creative, inspiring ending.
2. OVERACTING. Kevin Costner is a marginal actor at best, and the whiny frustrated farmer role is laughable in this movie. Should I laugh when he gets "frustrated" with the voice? And Busfield's rant/shake the daughter scene was pathetic. And the "Oh my god! Where did these ballplayers suddenly come from?" expression was priceless.
3. Cheesy. Tries way, way too hard to force the father-son-baseball-bonding theme down everyone's throat. If Jones or Costner or the doctor would have spouted off one more sappy line about baseball, I might have thrown up. But I guess some people like the overdramatic garbage.
After watching this movie with my dad, I felt bonded to him in that we were both cracking up laughing at just how bad the movie turned out to be. I had high hopes after Bull Durham, but they were shot down about 20 minutes into this stinker.
"Ease his pain." That just about sums it up.
- Every one should see this movie - If you have not, you are missing out on a very good well know and well done movie. A good family movie! The newer DVD has bonus footage that tells why the movie is still going strong after nearly 10 years. Let your iminagination go and see what you can dream of - Maybe it will come true for you if you let your dreams guide you.
- Field of Dreams...was about baseball, but in a fantasy way.I really love it.Kevin Costner,Amy Madigan,Earl Jones, and the rest of the cast were real great in this movie too. It's a family movie i would highly recommened everyone to watch it.

- THIS IS A GREAT MOVIE I BOUGHT IT FOR MY GRAND KIDS AND THEY REALLY LIKED IT
- I'm sorry, with all due respect to the reviewer, Mr. Simanton, I thoroughly disagree with his review. My kids love the movie as much as I did, back when it came out, there is no loss of effervescence in our home. This movie is one of all time favourites of my older two children, who are 17 and 8. The soda bottle is still fine here, thank you.
- I've loved it since I first saw it in a hotel room. Ironically,I was quite sick at that time.
Ferris Buller has the day off, claiming he is ill, using his wits. Decade, or year doesn't mater because there will forever be those kids who would love a day on the run with no classes! Kids can easily relate, and if not there has to be something very wrong! No, I KID, REALLY!
There's a lot of goodness in here, and the brother sister jealousy is spot on.
Great fun, and laughs for everyone!
- Another 80's movie that will NOT appeal to anyone not a teenager during that decade.
Ferris is right up there with The Breakfast Club.
Fun when it came out.
Funny when it came out.
Did it age well?
Did any of us???
No, well, at lease I didn't.
Neither did Breakfast Club and neither has this movie.
Some fun and funny moments for those of us who remember.
Everyone else will probably roll their eyes.
Worth a rental if your interested.

This was one of my favorite movies when I was a young boy. I hadn't watched it since I was probably 14 or so, so I was excited to watch it again with my wife to see if I would still like it. For the most part this movie lived up to my expectations. It is very funny with a type of humor that is reminiscent of the humor of The Little Rascals. One of the best features of this movie is the varying characters and how their traits mesh within the context of the group. Further, the acting is very good and the story-line is fairly intriguing, especially for the kids. The thought of baseball and adventure in the summertime is one that rings true to many kids, and it certainly brings back memories for me.
All in all, I highly recommend this movie with the following reservations. This movie is rated PG while I think it should be rated PG-13. Though it is generally a clean movie with innocent fun and jest, there are a couple things about it that I think disqualify it for a PG rating. The kids swear on a number of occasions (not often, but enough to make a difference), and at one point all the kids partake of chewing tobacco. Further, there are two back-to-back scenes with mild sexual content. As a Christian, I would hesitate to allow my children to watch this movie before age 12 or so. Nevertheless, this movie is a classic and as far as movies go these days it is pretty clean. I think it is most appropriate for young teenagers.
- The shipping seemed to take awhile, but the product was packed well & brand new!
- When ever I watch the Sandlot, I always think of when I was a child and I have this deep attachment to the film. I love it.
- I recommend this movie for kids of all ages. It is a wonderful movie for the whole family to enjoy.
- It is the summer of 1962, and Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry), his mother (Karen Allen), and his stepfather, Bill (Denis Leary) have moved to a new neighborhood. Scotty is kind of an egghead and has a hard time making friends. His mother tells him to get out and make friends, get in trouble even. Bill, his stepfather, could teach him how to play baseball, but he is too busy. Luckily, Benny Rodriguez (Mike Vitar) asks him to play with their sandlot baseball team. Scotty has a lot to learn about baseball, and the other kids don't want to let him play:
Ham Porter: Benny, why'd you bring that kid?
Benny: Because he makes nine of us.
Yeah Yeah: Yeah yeah, so does my sister, but I didn't bring her along!
They don't keep score or anything, the game just goes on and on, the perfect game--unless someone hits the ball over the junkyard fence where 'The Beast,' dwells. One day Benny hits the ball so hard that the cover tears off. It seems like a sign that something great is going to happen, but they are fresh out of baseballs. Scotty gets the ball that his stepfather keeps in his study, but he is unaware of its value, as it is signed by baseball legend Babe Ruth. He hits his first homerun over the fence, but his victory is shortlived when he realizes that in order to get the ball back before his stepfather misses it, he will have to confront 'The Beast,' the biggest and meanest junkyard dog who has ever lived.
Smalls: I was gonna put the ball back.
Squints: But it was signed by Babe Ruth!
Smalls: Yeah, you keep telling me that! Who is she?
Ham Porter: WHAT? WHAT?
Kenny: The sultan of swat!
Bertram: The king of crash!
Timmy: The colossus of clout!
Tommy: The colossus of clout!
All: BABE RUTH!
Ham Porter: THE GREAT BAMBINO!
Smalls: Oh my god! You mean that's the same guy?
The Sandlot is a classic story of baseball, friends, and dogs. It is much loved by my sister and her daughters, who often quote from it, especially this scene with Scotty Smalls and Hamilton 'Ham' Porter (Patrick Renna):
Ham Porter: Hey, Smalls, you wanna s'more?
Smalls: Some more of what?
Ham Porter: No, do you wanna s'more?
Smalls: I haven't had anything yet, so how can I have some more of nothing?
Ham Porter: You're killing me Smalls! These are s'more's stuff! Alrite now pay attention. First you take the graham, you stick the chocolate on the graham. Then you roast the 'mallow. When the 'mallows flaming... you stick it on the chocolate. Then cover with the other end. Then you scarf. Kind of messy, but good!
This movie was also kind of messy, but good. It was real good. It was the Babe Ruth of baseball movies. Written and directed by David M. Evans, he also provides voice over narration. I could have sworn that it was James Denton who plays the plumber, Mike Delfino on The Desperate Housewives TV program, but it wasn't. David M. Evans did a great job on this film. Chauncey Leopardi was hillarious as Michael 'Squints' Palledorous. Marty York was also very funny as Alan 'Yeah-Yeah' McClennan. James Earl Jones played the owner of the junkyard, Mr. Mertle. The kids think he is the meanest man who ever lived, but let's just say that his bark is worse than his bite. There is a great scene at the community pool, and Marlee Shelton plays the lifeguard, Wendy Peffercorn.
Squints: I've been coming here every summer of my adult life, and every summer there she is oiling and lotioning, lotioning and oiling... smiling. I can't take this no more!
When the boys are in the pool watching Wendy Peffercorn, the dialog: "She don't know what she's doing" and the answer "Yes she does, she knows exactly what she's doing" is the same as in a similar scene in Cool Hand Luke (1967). Also a great scene when they challenge another baseball team, one that actually has uniforms, to a game. Did I mention that red haired, freckled, chubby Patrick Renna was a natural born comic as Ham Porter? His distracting chatter while he plays catcher in the big game is classic.
Ham Porter: PLAY BALL! Hurry up, batter. This better be a short game, I gotta get home for lunch.
[Pitcher pitches and the batter fails to even swing]
Ham Porter: Haha, that's one.
[cuts to new pitch]
Ham Porter: [to the batter] You know, if my dog was as ugly as you. I'd shave his butt and tell him to walk backwards.
[cuts to new pitch]
Ham Porter: Here it comes, it's coming, I tell ya. STRIKE THREE
[Porter puts the batter off, he swings and misses]
Ham Porter: YOU'RE OUT!
[cuts to new pitch]
Ham Porter: Is that your sister out there in left field, naked? She's naked?
Phillips: [swings and misses again] SHUT UP PORTER!
Ham Porter: Hey, hey, hey, I'm just trying to start a friendly conversation, come on.
Ham Porter: [two seconds later] Think she'll go out with me?

4 comments about Yankee Stadium: Baseball's Cathedral (With Collectable Ticket & Coin).
- This is a excellent video about the big old ballpark in the bronx. It captures all the great moments in the stadium's history and more. A must have for true Yankee fans. It goes along perfectly with "Yankee Stadium The Official Retrospective" hardcover book. I highly recommend this 2-disc set.
- The first disc is two hours of history about the Stadium, with commentary by everyone from George Bush to Aaron Boone (LOVE Aaron Boone!). Oddly missing from the commentary: George Steinbrenner. It's so well-made, and with the Gladiator-esque music pumping through the background, it makes you appreciate the building and the history and the team even more. I was more disappointed in the second disc, of "bonus features," which had things like Lou Gehrig's speech and Aaron Boone's home run. But they only showed about three lines of the speech - and I know there exists more newsreel footage than that of the ceremony, and they didn't use Michael Kay's commentary on Aaron Boone, and I know they had the rights to use it, because they showed earlier clips on the first disc using it. But apart from those glaring omissions, I loved every minute of the discs.
- I love the yankee stadium that the park are very powerful baseball park which 26 world series champs when the yankees are playing the world series games that I rooted the yankees for 4 years (1996-1998-1999-2000). I like the red sox players went to the Yankees for the contract :-)
- I am very pleased with my purchase of this great DVD that I have added to my Yankee DVD collection. Thanks!
