1 comments about Psychology of Losing - Tricks, Traps and Sharks (How to prevent Ruthless Gamesmanship).
  1. I wrote this book to document that massive variety of tricks played by opponents on each other in every sport at every level. This is not a complete list, but is comprehensive.

You can enjoy this book on three levels
    1. A treatise on the usually hidden side of sports described with a humorous twist - just a fun read.
    2. A catalog of mind games, both unconscious and consciously applied against you and your team - an educational tool to identify and react to ruthless gamesmanship.
    3. A training guide for the gamesman. Setting up conditions to manage the opponent's viewpoint.

(Maybe there should be a new position in sports - the master gamesman, responsible for analyzing opponent's strengths and weaknesses, then developing plans to confuse the opposing coaches)

Many of these I have personally experienced and used in 50 years of competitive fun. Others have been provided by other old coaches

There was a time when I considered gamesmanship to be at the edge of cheating. But bitter experience has told me that sportsmanship by others can not be expected. I don't need to use these tricks but when some poor fool tries something against me - all that is needed is for someone to sweep up the floor.

Take at look at the table of contents, and read a few of them. If you want to make sure these tricks won't get pulled on you, it will be worth the study time. Plus with the book in hand, you can write in the margins.

  1. From the outset, this book plunges you deep into the wonderful world that is badminton. Mark Golds managed to teach me everything there is to know about the sport, from attacking serves to smashes. Accept no substitute, Mark - former England player - teaches in a way which would get begginers into the game, but at the same time has a learning curve steep enough for experienced players to add tremedously to their game. I now know why badminton is an Olympic sport, and more to the point, what a great game it is. If you are thinking of picking up a raquet for the first time, or are closer to forever hanging it up, this book is a perfect suitor for you, and in my opinion definately deserves the coverted five stars!

  2. I don't understand why the book deserved 5 stars (that misled my purchase), I think that it deserves 2 at most.
I don't believe that it is all what Mark has to transmit us, its experience should surely be a lot richer
it don't provide or describe important strokes, shots or hints (for example, what about the forearm pronation on smashes or clears). It also has, almost consecutively, repeated pictures without providing a new point of view.
With determination, I don't recommend it (and I recommend Mark that don't let his name be used in such a way).

  1. This book by Donald C. Paup and Bo Fernhall covers everything you need to know about the game of badminton. The illustrations and the explanations in this book are very informative. From the the basic drills, to strategies in badminton, this book is a must for any badminton ethusiast. For the beginners, this book tackles the essential basics of the game like proper hand grips, basic footworks, how to execute the net shots (clears, drives, smashes, drops), basic strategies for doubles and single players. For the advance player, this book will help you review some of the basics because I believe that any player should always review his or her basic skills in order to be a better player and go on to the next level of play. This book will also help advance players to plan strategies and tactics in play.

  4. More drills than I ever could use, but the instruction regarding techniques and strategy was good.

  1. This book does a great job of teaching basic skills and strategies and giving a good overview of philosiphy of the game. the instructions are very clear and the pictures show the exact sequence of movements for proper performance of skills. This book also features drills for improving techniques and conditioning as well as basic strength and flexibility training information. for the true beginner, this book also contains the IBF rules (at the time-setting score needs update). This book took me from a terrible player with no prior knowledge of the game, to an outstanding player. Highly reccomended for beginner to intermediate recreational or competitive player.

  1. Badminton is probably one of the most underecognized sports in the western world, but it is immensely popular in Asian countries as well as several European nations.

The game is not too difficult to learn, and this book does a good job in explaining the strokes. But the truth is that explaining how to play a game (through a book) is simply an impossible (or nearly impossible) task. The graphics do help, but the instructions can become a bit tedious. You'd do better to buy a video and simply study their actions and then read this book, rather than just buy the book by itself.

NOTE: This is not your average picnic-style game. True badminton is fast-paced, incredibly explosive, and filled with trick shots and actions at every turn. One has to be in top physical condition with excellent hand-eye coordination and quick feet in order to play the game well.

If you have these skills or have played the game before, grab this book. The basics will help.

  2. I bought this book hoping it would help me learn skills and tactics that would make me a better badminton player, but was really disappointed. This book has dozens of various drills that would probably have a positive effect on most persons' games if: (1) the reader had at least five hours a week of spare time to devote to the practice drills; (2)the reader has a partner willing to spend those five hours working on the drills; and (3) the reader can find a place to practice for those five hours. Given that most people (in N. America at least) probably have only a few hours a week available for either playing or court space (which they would like to use for playing rather than practice in any event), it does not become feasible to bother with the various drills that take up the majority of space in this book.
There is very little content in this book about subjects other than drills. [...] I agree with almost all of the comments of the first reviewer, but disagree strongly with his/her rating for the book. I found this book to be substantially useless for my needs.
Ok to check out from the library, but definitely NOT recommended for purchase.

  3. An excellent book on the sport of badminton. Easy to understand and follow. Great resource book for any high school p.e. teacher or coach. I recommend this book to all that are interested in the sport.

  4. The book was new but wow shipping took over two weeks and it said the book was in stock. Good deal if you have the time to wait for it to get to you.
