  1. I ordered this machine to be able to work out in hotel rooms when I'm traveling to clients by car. I already own a 'waterrower' that I'd rate 5 stars, and I routinely work out at a gym with a 'concept2' machine that uses air fan resistance (I'd rate the concept2 at 4 1/2 stars).
Delivery was as promised, the machine was easy to assemble, and it is portable in the trunk of my car--that's the good news.
I have now used the machine for aproximately a dozen workouts of 45 minutes each. I can get a marginally adequate workout using it, but I don't enjoy the experience because of machine design limitations.
The dashpot on one side squeeks unmercifully; foot placement & the rotating foot rests limit the workout that legs get. The foot straps are very good, and (when properly used) really lock the feet to the foot rests. That is important because the foot rests have an inadequate lip at the bottom of the heel that is supposed to keep your foot from slipping off. If you are tall (I'm 6'1"), good luck getting a full stroke without the seat slamming into one stop or the other.
Overall, machine is adequate (sort of), but not great. Also, before you buy, go to Brookstone's site & check the owners manual--the weight limit is 220 lbs & my sense is that they really mean that.
If you want a good machine, go elsewhere.
Given the choice with what I now know, I probably would not buy this machine.

  2. This is not a Brookstone-quality product. It is poorly made and does not allow a natural rowing motion. Do not waste your time or money on this product.

  3. The rowing machine works well and is sturdy. It was very easy to put together...and that is coming from someone who usually has to convince friends to help me put things together. The reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars has to do with the "fold-a-way" aspect of the product. It doesn't fit under a standard bed space and the folding does take some effort of unscrewing parts. Although it is not a huge effort by any means it still seems a little bit more complex than it needs be. All in all though it is a well built machine.

  1. I purchased this item as part of a gold box promotion. The bike is nearly fully assembled. It took about half an hour to get it assembled. The instructions for both assembly and operation are not very good. There is an addendum (at least in mine) packed in the instruction book. It is very unclear. What I painfully discovered is that the lever that tightens the seat position needs to be adjusted before mounting the seat. If you don't get it in exactly the right place, the seat has to be removed before you can lock the seat into position.

In terms of operation, the bike has a few issues. The center column is impossible to keep tight so the console wobbles. The pulse monitoring sensors almost never work. The eddy current resistence works very well. The seat and the bike itself are rugged (and heavy -- 120 lbs 60 kg). Parts do tend to loosen and the connections between them are not well thought out.

For the money (when it was on sale), this exercise bike is a good deal. The console display is very similar to the ones I have seen in gyms. The bike has some good pre-programmed exercise routines.

Just be aware that this bike will need periodic tightening. This is a home machine and is not as rugged as the exercise bikes found in the typical gym.
