1 comments about Brooklyn Dodgers 1912 Road Cooperstown Fitted Cap.

  1. This 1912 "Away" cap was worn by the Brooklyn Dodgers (at that time AKA the Superbas and the Trolley Dodgers) in their last season at the second Washington Park.

As the owner of a not very inspiring baseball team, Charley Henry "Hercules" Ebbets was faced with a decision at the beginning of the Nineteen Tens decade: Whether to relocate his struggling Dodgers away from Brooklyn or to build a new steel-and-concrete stadium to replace their obsolescent ballfield. Built of wood and too close to the pungent Gowanus Canal, Washington Park (so named because it was the site of Washington's headquarters during the Battle of Brooklyn in 1776), was falling out of favor as modern ballparks began to rise all around America.

Charley chose to keep the Dodgers in Brooklyn despite several attractive relocation offers from other cities. The site Ebbets chose for the Dodgers' new home was nothing more than a garbage dump in a largely abandoned corner of Brooklyn, known by the not very pleasant moniker of Pigtown. Ebbets bought up the site piecemeal so as not to alert land speculators. Charley actually wanted to call the park "New Washington Park" but was overruled by other Dodger stockholders who admired his determination and named it Ebbets's Field. A protesting Charley dropped the possessive.

When construction of Ebbets Field began in March of 1912, Charley Ebbets explained his decision to stay and invest in Brooklyn's future by saying that "the Dodgers belong to all of Brooklyn, not just to the stockholders of the Brooklyn Base Ball Club," and that "no man should own a ballclub who is only interested in the bottom line." Ebbets prophesied that the new field would last fifty years. It lasted 47 and was immensely popular, being torn down rather callously in 1960. You have to wonder what Ebbets would have thought of Wallet O'Money, um, Walter O'Malley, moving his team and razing his ballpark for no other reason than greed.

The team Ebbets was so fond of wore this hat "Away." The home version reverses the color scheme. The front of this cap sports a font gothic "B" amidst a stylized baseball diamond. Blue and white were already the traditional colors of the Dodgers, and remained so for most of their history.

This cap was used for only one season. The style changed the next year in honor of the team's new start in a new home.

American Needle has done a fine job recreating this historic hat. Take care with the sizing as the cap is fitted, not adjustable.

Wear it with pride in honor of Brooklyn's Dodgers of yore.
