5 comments about Wiffle 9 inch Baseballs in Counter-top Display - One Dozen.

  1. I have had the same Wiffle ball for the past nine years. But, I only have one. In the past I have bought other plastic baseballs to only have them crack or fall apart after the third hit. The only plastic baseball to last has been my Wiffle ball. I was so excited to find a dozen balls. My two sons and I will have many years of baseball fun ahead of us!

  2. Wiffleball = life; this is the perfect purchase for true enthusiasts that have a knack for hitting too many balls on roofs.

  3. I was looking for a dozen Wiffle balls and found exactly what I needed. I was hoping to find a set not individually wrapped, but this is what was available.

  4. Great
Can not find wiffle ball brand in my area. Was great to find them at amazon

  5. .....that's the day that the first WIFFLE BALLS (invented a year earlier) went on sale in this baseball-crazy country. Mr. David Mullany created the first Wiffle Ball in Fairfield, Connecticut after seeing his 12-year-old son struggling to throw a curveball. Mr. Mullany (to whom we bow down and show obeisance) cut eight oblong slots into plastic orbs that were used to package cosmetics and the Wiffle Ball, an American institution, was born.

Oh, Wiffle Ball, Wiffle Ball, it nearly compels me to wax poetic. I'm now 46 years old, but the love that I have for the game of Wiffle Ball will possess my heart long after my body has any capability to throw a breaking pitch! My Brother and I were born to a beautiful, baseball-loving woman. Shirley grew up following the Cincinnati Reds, and as a child, she acquired a nickname based on a long-forgotten Big League pitcher. As an adult, she worked for the Los Angeles dOdGers and the Los Angeles Angels (that was before they became the California Angels, and then the Anaheim Angels, and then the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and then the Chicago White Sox victims). She instilled in her two boys and one daughter a love for America's pastime. (In fact, my sister was the first girl we ever heard of to play on a boys Little League team.)

But when we weren't on a baseball diamond with 7 other guys, and when we couldn't scrounge up two other guys to play a game of "Over-The-Line" at the park, my Brother, Doug, and I were battling it out in a game of Wiffle Ball in the yard. We had some outrageously competitive games in our "Glory Days." We perfected the art of pitching a Wiffle Ball, and baffled many a batter who tried to hit us. I remember 1990 and a young, athletic college student who, claiming to have played Wiffle Ball throughout his childhood, challenged this old geezer on the UCLA field behind the John Wooden Center. Well, my screwball was only breaking about 10 feet that day, and after taking it for strike three about a dozen times, he just shook his head, and I concluded that whatever game he was playing as a child, it WASN'T what my Brother and I called, "WIFFLE BALL."

If you have never owned a Wiffle Ball, you've never really been alive, my dear friend! Although they do tend to crack between the oblong cutouts after some time (especially if you hang too many curveballs for my Brother who swings with great authority), they will last for countless hours of baseballesque bliss and excellent exercise! They can be used anywhere outdoors because the Wiffle Ball weighs only two-thirds of an ounce, and if Doug never knocked one through a window, neither will you!

And although the Wiffle Ball is light, it does not follow that it should be taken lightly. After San Francisco Giant (man, do I hate the Giants!), Kevin Mitchell won the 1989 National League MVP award, he publicly stated that he had really learned to hit the curveball by playing a lot of Wiffle Ball the previous off-season. One of the greatest hitters of all-time, San Diego Padre, Tony Gwynn used to hit Wiffle Balls off of a batting tee because he could tell from the spin where he had struck the ball. Play with a Wiffle Ball and you're in Big League company!

The Wiffle Balls offered here are the regulation 9 inch variety. (And SURPRISE! They're still made in the U.S.A. The day production moves to Communist China I'll jump.) Twelve Wiffle Balls are currently going for $14.95, that's only $1.25 per ball. Do you have any idea how much fun you can have with a Wiffle Ball? Well, take my word for it, you'll get more than a dollar and twenty-five cents worth!

Now all you need to do is get the regulation, Old School, plastic yellow ("banana") bat. Of course, if you really want to splurge you can purchase the newly invented aluminum Wiffle Ball bat. Funny story : My dear ol' Ma bought an aluminum Wiffle Ball bat as a gift for my Brother on his birthday. But she wasn't sure what size to get, so she called the company. "How old is your son?" the representative asked. When she said, "41", he laughed loud and said, "I think you'll want to go with the heaviest model."

One of the great disappointments in my life (SERIOUSLY!) is that they didn't think to organize Wiffle Ball competitions until Doug and I were in our 40's. We scouted out the competition at the "Wiffle Ball World Series" here in Phoenix a few years ago. (Players fly in from all over the country!) We figured that even at our advanced age and with my arthritis, we could still give those young studs all they bargained for and more, if we polished our long-neglected technique over the next year. Alas, it never happened, what with work, and life, and all the other crap that gets in the way of Wiffle Ball play.

But that doesn't mean YOU can't fly into Phoenix next year and win the title! Get to it, man! Get yourself a dozen Wiffle Balls, a "banana" bat and start practicing. Hint : the ball breaks in the direction of the solid half. Want to throw a drop? Make sure the solid section is on the bottom at your release point. Then get inventive; there are innumerable variations on that theme! You can thank me for the hint when you see me. You'll recognize me because I'm always the guy who picks up the suitcase that comes around on the airport luggage carrousel with a plastic yellow bat strapped across the top of it!

5 comments about Bushnell Velocity Speed Gun.

  1. I ordered this radar gun for a few different reasons. 1) For the price it's a great deal. 2) I had used a friend's a few years back so I was already familiar with Bushnell products and knew first hand what it could do...it works as advertised. Unit is very consistent and accurate. And finally, 3) My son plays travel baseball and little league baseball so using it for checking out opposing team's pitcher's is a plus. It's just an all around good investment. The only downside is the cheap carry bag, so my wife made me a heavier denim bag.

  2. Great product, GREAT price (better then any local Sports Store). Gun works well, kids can use it and LOVE it.

  3. I bought this Speed Gun several weeks ago and have been pleased with it's ease of use and durability. The gun is simple to use, just turn it on, hold the trigger and you get your readings. I have dropped the gun a couple of times and the durable construction saved the gun. The only issue is that it appears the readings are a couple of miles per hour low, however, the readings are consistent so making the speed adjustment is easy. I have been using the gun to gauge the speed of my 9-year olds pitches and it has worked fine.

  4. Had seen this product in use so bought one for little league use. It works pretty good if you have the right angle. Best used from a scorekeeper's box with angle directly behind catcher shooting out toward pitcher. Or just to the left or right of catcher. If your angle of shooting is more than this it will not read correctly. This product will help players work on their pitching form by giving them feedback as to what changes are producing speed.

  5. I broke out the radar gun to check out my son's pitching speed. Out of 20 tries, I got one reading that was even close to accurate. He was recently clocked at 80 mph on a reliable Juggs gun, but the best I could get from this product was one reading of 73 mph. Now, even if he did throw it 73, why was I getting readings anywhere from 11 to 23 mph on the other 19? Operator error? Sure, but why isit so difficult to get the reading? It was a breeze on the Juggs gun.

In sum, highly inaccurate, difficult to get readings consistently (ANY kind of readings!), and a major disappointment.

  1. This ball feels, weighs, and throws like a true official hardball. However, it is soft enough to reduce impact and force you to catch the ball correctly. It's softness enables it to bounce out of your glove if you don't squeeze your glove correctly. This is a good thing in my perspective because it teaches my kids good fundamentals while playing catch, yet it isn't so extreme that it frustrates you or makes catching it difficult. It also has a glittery effect in light and looks really cool in the air.

  1. After searching for the best deal all over the internet, we found this product. They are PERFECT for batting practice and them some. 5 dozen baseballs for this price is AWESOME. We are ordering another bucket!!1 GREAT DEAL, GREAT PRODUCT!!!!!

  2. My Little LEague team loves these baseballs. They look, feel, and perform as necessary for my team of 7-9 yr-olds. Great price!

  3. I was a little weary of the quality at first having used poor quality baseballs in the past, but that was put to rest pretty quick with these. They are great baseballs for practice, we use them to start the season in our clinic as the instructors like to work with "pearls" and then they are put into our bucket for BP all season. Only problem we had was players walking off with them they liked them so much. I suggest marking them so that doesn't happen.

  4. Baseballs are in good shape, high quality leather, very good for practice. Beats the pants off the cheaper vinyl balls.

  1. I purchased two softballs and they were a hit at my wife's family reunion. You don't need gloves (although, you could use them). Just a bat and the balls will allow you to play. We use the rule bounce or fly; catch the ball on a single bounce or fly & the batter's out. Highly recommended. P.S. Yes, I grew up in Chicago.

  2. My husband wanted to replace a 30+ year old softball that his family had used in Chicago. He didn't think they still made them, but they do. This is nice for working with children who are just learning the game.

  3. A 16" softball makes it easier to play with a family reunion. No one needs a glove, especially after the ball softens up. It's easier to hit. The balldoes not fly as far allowing you to use a smaller field.

  1. This ball cost me about a dollar a throw. It stopped working after only a few throws. It was not hit or abused in any way. Probably another fine product from China.

  2. Bought as gift for 10 yo, who likes it but isn't majorly impressed. Speed reading seems to be inconsistent and even he noticed.

  3. This is a great little device -- inexpensive (especially compared to a real radar system) and it works!

    - You have to measure off the distance you're pitching from since it uses simple timing to calculate your speed. There are 8 or so preset distances to choose from.

    - The pitch speed calculation was right in line with our experience at a real radar gun setup so it seems like it's pretty accurate.

    - The repeatability is very good.

    - One downside -- passed ball into the swimming pool fried the circuits, so beware that it's a bit fragile as an electronic device.

However, at this price point, it's hard to beat it.

    Highly recommend!

  1. When I ordered this I didn't realize it was not a standard size softball... it's actually SUPER HUGE! Do people really use this size softball?! If so, how?! lol... way to big to even hold, never mind catch, it wouldn't fit in my daughter's glove. We did have a good laugh though... and the return process was easy and courteous @ eSportsonline. Bottom line, beware in ordering these unless you have big hands. :)
