2 comments about Garage Band Cookbook: Business Start-Up Guide.
  1. My friends and I are just starting a band. My high school band director had heard about this book and recommended it to me. I got hold of a copy and shared it with the members of the group.

The book has helped us focus our efforts in regards to the business side of the music business. We had no idea that there was so much involved! We downloaded the sample business plan from the free Web site that goes with the book. My dad helped us, too. Now we have a business plan with goals of our own. It makes our group so much more organized. There is information about lawyers, managers and agents. There is also tips about equipment and sound systems.

I showed the book to a beginning music teacher at school and she is thinking of using this book for a class.

Therefore, we recommend this book to people (and bands) like us.

  2. Written by music industry veteran Dan Titus (who draws upon his years of experience as a musician, DJ, producer, and writer), the Garage Band Cookbook: Business Start-Up Guide is a definitive, step-by-step, do-it-yourself, "how-to" manual for establishing a band as a successful commercial venture. The president of the business media-publishing firm Venture Marketing, Dan Titus shows how to start a "for profit" company; provides a business start-up checklist; explains how to finance a commercial venture in music; explains sole proprietorships, limited liability companies, partnerships, and corporations; shows how to write a business plan (a sample plan is included as a template); demonstrates how to write a marketing plan (including the use of publicity); explains how to select a lawyer, an agent, and an accountant; as well as providing invaluable information on insurance and government permits. Garage Band Cookbook is enhanced with a tandem website that includes PDF ebooks and free software downloads. If you are contemplating taking your band from amateur to professional status, give the Garage Band Cookbook a close and careful reading. Also very highly recommended are two other "how to" books by Dan Titus: DJ Cookbook: Business Start-Up Guide (1582911088, ...) and Video Cookbook: Business Start-Up Guide (158291-110X, ...).

  1. The kings of guitar instumentals, the Ventures. If you're like me and enjoy the rich ringing sounds of the Ventures you'll love playing each song note for note. Easy to read guitar tab, notes and chords are included. Play just like they do! I'd have a hard time comming up with better songs to accompny my father with his guitar. Everyone knows Ventures hits and loves to hear them played. There are several good articles reproduced from a guitar magazine, you'll learn more about the band. I had no idea! If you enjoy early pop/rock guitar, you'll love playing Ventures hits.

  2. I have always loved the Ventures for their style.
This is a terrific book, It has most of the best songs and is an easy guitar chord and tab format. When playing I remember what I was doing when each song was popular, terrific memories. I would highly reccomend this book to us old timers as well as younger musicians who are studying this era of music.
    Buy it, It's worth it!

  3. The following songs are in the book:
    Apache
    Beethoven Five-O
    Bulldog

    Let's Go
    (The) Lonely Surfer
    Mr. Moto

  1. If you like The Ventures you gotta have this book. Their greatest hits are tabbed so you can have fun soloing or put together an arrangement to play with your buddies or at a gig. I'm working my way through each tune with my Strat, enjoying every minute. A great book!

  2. It is a good book. However it does not contains all the licks for all the songs in the book. e.g. Wipeout has no lick. Let's Go missing the first lick etc. but for the licks that are there, it is an excellent presentation for the real licks.

5 comments about Edly's Music Theory for Practical People.
  1. Its an ok book but I wish it had more worksheet type stuff in it. Music theory isn't hard you just have to work a whole lot of it like math practice makes perfect. The book is easy to read and clear. I feel that I am finally starting to understand music now, it's a good buy.

  2. Read many other theory books and this is the best one so far. I am a guitar player and has really connected a lot of concepts for me.

  3. An interesting, logical, and understandable approach to Music Theory. Filled with enough examples, insights, and relationships to round out your unterstanding.

  4. This takes most of the information in the "much thicker and formal" Music Theory books and condenses to something manageable, easy to understand, easy to read AND easy to learn. A good book for any musician to own !

  5. Ed Roseman has written a charming book, but has provided the reader with an inadequate explanation of its subject matter. I had to ask my trumpet instructor more than once to explain what Mr. Roseman failed to provide in the way of information about the concepts presented here. The student either has to guess or find the information elsewhere in order to avoid getting lost. I definitely do not recommend this book for anyone new to the subject of music theory unless they have access to someone well versed on the subject, such as a music teacher.

  1. Practical Theory Complete: A Self-Instruction Music Theory Course by Sandy Feldstein is exactly as it says, very practical. This compilation text and workbook provides detailed instruction into the basics of reading and writing music. it gives rich examples and plentiful space for practice throughout the book. I really enjoyed this book. You can read it yourself or along with a basic musicianship coarse in school. As a beginner I can attest to this book's extremely clear explanations. upon completion of this book many will have gained a strong foundation in basic music theory upon which to build on. I rate this book a 4 out of 5 because it is very effective and completes the basic goal it sets out to achieve. this book is an exemplary example of practical education for beginners in the field of music. whether you plan on making music your life or want to gain just a small appreciation for music, Practical Theory Complete is the book for you.

  2. I am a voice and basic piano teacher. This book is good for adults who start out with no previous experience in music. The problem is though that they can easily fill out all the exercises correctly without having the faintest idea of what anything sounds like. I had one adult voice student who did fine with this book, but still was very baffled by the SOUND of intervals, could not tell a third, from a fourth, from a fifth. If students are doing this WITH a keyboard, they are in better shape, but they do need a teacher for that and then it isnt a self-instruction course. Having a CD with illustration in sound of what some of the exercises sound like would be good.

  3. I have used this text for college freshmen in a beginning course for singers for several years. It tells beginning singers what they need to know in order to not be bewildered by a page of music. The students often comment on how well the material is presented.

  4. This is a terrific resource for any music educator regardless of whether or not they teach beginners or advanced students. Each lesson is designed to give both instruction and practice on the same page. It can even be used in a SIM (Self-instructional Module) format! It's the right price and will be useful in endless ways.

  5. This is a great study of music for the beginner and for those wanting to refresh their music understanding. It starts with the most basic leveal of music and takes you to being able to compseing your own music. As a student of music, it has given me a good foundation for understanding how and why music is written as well as being able to read it and compse new songs. A great tool for music lovers.

  1. i really like this book it is essential to all aspiring and accomplished jazz musicians

  2. I am very pleased with The Real Book, 6th edition. It is clearly formatted, the chords are all proper, and the song selection is diverse. This is a great book for newbies to jazz and seasoned six string vets as well. I would not hesitate to recommend it to either.

  3. Put simply, if you want to play jazz, you need to know the tunes in this book. My guitar teachers have given mixed reviews of some of the arrangements of the tunes, but nonetheless, the Real Book is a must-have for any serious jazz musician.

  4. It is a pleasure to see clearly written notation, so it gets 4 stars, but just barely..

    Number 1 complaint:

The publisher did not follow a cardinal rule of notation: don't place vertical bar lines directly below the bar lines of the staff directly above. So many of the songs have ALL the bar lines directly below those above.

This makes it much harder to sight read the music. For example, look at "I'll Remember April". The first two measures for staff 6 are the same as staff 5. If your eyes don't jump down, you will get to the 3rd measure and find yourself replaying staff 5. Compare that to sight reading "Man in the Green Shirt", or "500 Miles High" where most bar lines do not line up directly under the staff above. So much easier to keep your place.

    Number 2 complaint:

My number 2 complaint is the material used for the covers. Way too thin, prone to tearing. And the paper is grease/dirt absorbent. It should have a stiffer cover board with a laminate finish.

  5. It arrived in mint condition within two weeks even though I live in the EU.
