  1. I don't see how SRV can be credited as an author of this book. The author listed in the book is Hugh Gregory. If you want to learn about SRV, who he was and where he came from, do not buy this book. The Patoski and Crawford SRV bio and the Keri Leigh SRV bio are much more informative and much better books. The Antone's Home of the Blues DVD would also do a lot to help someone understand SRV's music.

The author's view of music itself is diametrically opposed to that of SRV. Gregory gives us the well known SRV quote about how when he (SRV) plays from his gut he is OK, but when he plays from his head, that's where he gets into trouble. Gregory doesn't like this, and has to respond with a statement that playing from your gut limits a performer. Gregory lauds a number of Jazz fusion-like artists in this book as if they have something to do with SRV, reflecting an obvious bias towards whatthe author considers as "intellectual" forms of music.

My intellectual training is in science, where elegance, not sophistication, is the intellectual goal. Thus I suppose I go more for simple, powerful music (elegance by definition) over sophisticated powerless music, regardless of the intellectual wizardry the music may represent. Thus I am an SRV fan! ..and I don't think much of Gregory's writing! Any musical artist who cannot take the basic form and make something meaningful (to others) of it simply isn't any good, let alone in the league of someone like SRV, who could create masterpieces in both his original compositions and his covers of other works (like Little Wing, for example).

I should have seen the misleding nature of this book in it's title, Roadhouse Blues. The Blues of SRV is more accurately described as Juke Joint Blues, and comes from the Delta and Chicago. Many of the artists to whom SRV's music is associated with in this book have little to nothing to do with SRV, and probably reflect the author's own tastes. Many artists whose works were fundamental to the development of SRVs music are discussed very little, or not at all, like Hubert Sumlin and Jimmy Rogers. Gregory refers to the Muddy Waters classic "Honey Bee" as an SRV composition that he (SRV) "unearthed from the Mississippi mud."! Partially accurate, I guess!

Through understanding SRVs music, many of us came to understand Delta Blues and related art forms quite well, much to our enrichment, and so will anyone who listens to SRVs music. An enduring legacy for which I am very grateful! This book doesn't cover this aspect of SRV at all.

This book is an interesting read for me as an example of how the authors of history distort history to suit their own biases. I suspect that this author knew next to nothing of SRV prior to authoring this book. His analysis of the 1982 Montreaux conceret really shows his lack of knowledge of SRV, where Gregory claims the crowd started out booing, but really got into SRV during the concert, flies in the face of the evidence on the DVD of the event, where the booing increases as the concert goes on, and they are loudly booed at the end.

This book reads much like a textbook, and could be a Guiness Book of World Records candidate for names dropped per unit of prose. In any event, one thing for certain, this book will do next to nothing to educate you on who SRV was and where he and his music came from.

  1. I enjoyed this book! I would like to see the authors go into a little more detail about S.R.V. when they made the album. But other than that, I highly recommend it.

  3. This is an excellent book. In every measure there is a whole blues guitar lesson. Stevie is most certainly one of the greatest blues guitarist of all time. Learning the riffs in this book should help any aspiring guitarist to get a good hold of the blues genre.

  4. For pros, books like these are not truly needed, but for people still on the path of learning, this is a great book to have. You can learn to play along with Stevie, if your fingers are fast enough, but it is definately a good learning experience. I am having an adventure trying to get all these songs down, but then again I am a devoted SRV fan.

  5. Hal Leonard make awesome tab books - it's not like they had much competition anyway... I'm a big SRV fan and this book was very helpful in nailing down some of the faster tracks, like Wham.

However, there's a lot of errors in this book that would've been caught had anyone just taken a final read at it. In Wham, some notes are written for the 24th fret (!) while it is obviously an 8va error and the notes should be played on the 12th fret. Some of the position shifts also don't make much sense, especially considering SRV's very fluid and efficient style.

In summary, I'm glad I bought this book but wish Hal Leonard had done a better job at proof reading the final material.

  1. This book really gave me an insight into the basics behind SRV's playing, as a beginner guitarist, it was very helpful.

  2. When I started playing guitar some 35 years ago, I would listen to guitar riffs on records and try to emulate what I heard. That was a slow, laborious process, that not only resulted in many scratched LPs, but often I could never figure out exactly what the guitarist was doing. This book, and others like it, takes much of the guesswork out. It does not give you every note SRV played on the songs (I doubt anyone could thoroughly tab Stevie!) but does give the guitar player enough to learn SRV's riffs and how he weaved them into his songs. And the accompanying CD is almost like having a teacher sit with you; much more beneficial than just using a book!

It looses a star for being too wordy and overly technical sounding (kill the adverbs, Wolf). Learning to play guitar is not complicated, nor does it take a music degree to be a Stevie Ray Vaughan (just lots of hard work, dedication, love of music and talent!). Like myself, many guitar players (SRV included) never took time to learn to read music. Just remember, the riffs are in the chords. If you want to learn to play like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Hendrix, or other guitar greats, this book will help. I think Stevie would have been flattered by the nice tributes Wolf gives him.

  3. This is the worst "signature series" book/cd i've seen. My biggest complaint: "Love Struck Baby" is not even demonstrated on CD. Book refers to cd, but tracks are missing. Waste of money!

  4. The new updated version is fantastic with all tracks demonstrated, wolf does another great job, great learning tool..henry sydney australia

  1. Good book (2nd edition), precise transcriptions. I already knew Mary Had a Little Lamb and a couple of licks off Couldnt Stand the Weather, and the book version is dead on. I actually corrected a few licks I didnt get right in the first place. I wish they would have included Lenny, Rude Mood and Little Wing.

  2. This is the greatest Stevie Ray Vaughan guitar-tablature book by all means......including 25 guitar song's spanning SRV's entire career with blistiring blues songs including Texas Flood, and Come On(Pt.3). This also includes live recordings like Im Leaving You(Commit A Crime), and Say What. This also features Pipeline from David Bowie's back to the beach album. This 2nd edition is better than the first they corrected many of their mistakes. This is the closest you will get to steive ray vaughan. I recomend this book to any guitarist seeking for only the best. Everyone can play along to this Lightnin' Blues spanning through 83-87. Enjoy!

  3. this book has been wonerful for my needs and i highly recomend it.

  4. I have had this book a long time and have learned a few songs from it over the years. Transcriptions are pretty accurate for the most part, not that I can play like SRV anyway. I would buy this book again.

  5. How else can you learn these lightning fast licks? I love this book, and it contains so many of SRV's songs; the best printed bass SRV collection I've seen, seems accurate too.

  1. In Step was personally my favorite Stevie Ray Vaughan album I loved how double trouble added a keyboard player to the band. I just recently bought this book at a guitar center yesterday. I love the song Rivera Paradise their so many words I could say about it but as complicated as it is the tab is 100% correct. I think for any guitarist this would be a pleasure to learn. If you want to rock the way Stevie did get In Step. This book is very deatailed all the notes are clear and understandable their is also tab. It seems many guitarist read tab now but to know the timing you need to listen to the CD In Step if you dont have the CD In Step then its not worth it to waste your money on this book until you buy the album. I am learning as of now Rivera Paradise its the best song on the album. My personal favorites on In Step are The House Is A Rocking, Crossfire, Wall Of Denial, and Rivera Paradise. If you want to learn Stevie Ray Vaughan 100% buy this book and you will admire it in a sense.

  1. This is a instant SRV classic. Most of the songs are in E flat or 1/2 step down tuning. Both Guitar tab and notation are used on every song in the book. There are also four black and white pictures of Stevie playing guitar live.

  1. If you are a Stevie Ray fan this dvd is a must have, You will watch it over and over. This is not a watch one time and stick it away dvd. Get yourself one and ENJOY!!!!!

  2. The best DVDs I own. Anyone who loves Stevie should have this and anyone who does not know him, try it and you will love him too. An unexcelled musician and a good man.

  3. This is a Great performance that showcases Stevie Ray's Rise to fame.
Double Trouble was the first unsigned act to play the festival.
The people there had never seen the likes of him before and his
performance was not received well by most of the Die hard blues fans.
You can hear the Boos throughout the DVD.If David Bowie or Jackson Brown
had not been in attendence,He may not have gotten his big break, or it
may have come at a time when Blues was on the Decline, I doubt that
could happen since he was and still is one of the Greatest Blues
artist ever.Get this DVD you will watch it time and time again.

  4. First, let me concur with the favorable reviews of the DVD/CD left by the reviewers who apparently thought this page was for that product rather than the book(hey, as long as they're SRV fans, it's all good.) Most fans know the legendary first performance started Stevie's journey to well deserved stardom in spite of the crowd's unfavorable response. However, I have met some uninitiated people who mistakenly believe that he played poorly due to nerves or because he was in an altered state of mind. So, for those who don't know, rest assured his performance was FANTASTIC. In fact, the version of "Texas Flood" won a grammy!!!! Although some have conjectured that the crowd reaction was due to Stevie being so loud or because he didn't fit their image of a bluesman, the fact is their booing is completely inexplicable and unwarranted. As for the second performance, Stevie was well established by that time. The crowd gave him the respect he deserved, and this recording shows he gave another of his characteristically astounding performances.

Which leads into one of the reasons why this book of transcriptions is so excellent. Obviously, the music has to be great to begin with before anyone would be interested in trying to explore how it was accomplished. Although I definitely haven't had the time to go through the entire book (with my capabilites, that will take YEARS :-), I have picked out licks here and there that I am anxious to learn. The book has given accurate transcriptions of those particular passages. Also, one of the three transcribers is Jesse Gress (the other two are Pete Billman and Jeff Story),who also did the transcriptions for the "Texas Flood" and "Couldn't Stand the Weather" recordings. I have found those books to be outstanding. If you have those and like them, you will probably feel the same about this Montreux book.

Be aware that the book only transcribes the songs on the CD. So the DVD-only tracks ("Look at Little Sister" "Cold Shot") do not appear. This is a minor point since transcriptions of the studio versions are available and, even without them, there's plenty of material here to keep any aspiring guitarist busy.

These performances include most of Stevie's famous songs, plus he played extended versions in concert, so this book is as good a place as any to begin a quest to get some of Stevie's brilliance under your own fingers. Best of luck to my fellow Stevie Ray admirers!!!!!
