  1. This book is a must read for anyone that's serious about starting their own music publishing business. It's full of good advice on how to become a music publisher and the roles that a music publisher fills. Eric makes you really think about the course you want your business to take.

    I highly recommend it!

  2. Has some insight about how to get put on, but not much more than I already knew about.

  3. Great ideas for starting your own publishing company, but the book is more focused on the song plugger. A better book for publishing company start-up is "Start & Run Your Own Record Label," by Daylle Schwartz.

  4. If you're a songwriter or composer with a growing collection of marketable songs, you'll want to read this book and learn the best way to get AND stay in the music business. You'll learn that the best way to get "signed" with a great publisher is simply to become one. This important point is covered in the first chapter so you won't miss anything.

Read it carefully, take good notes and apply the basic principles. You'll be glad you did and you'll be on the way to becoming your own "best" music publisher! If you have quality material you'll be in a strong position to negotiate licensing deals for your songs while keeping full control of your own publishing. This is especially important if you're producing "hit" material whose value will increase over time.

As a self-published music composer and producer I can tell you that this book, "Making Music Make Money", has really helped me apply and understand the things I've been doing with my own music publishing and licensing ventures. Don't sell yourself short, learn how to copyright, publish and license your own music. This book will show you how and save you years of trouble and wasted time. Publish your own music and join the new Music Biz 2.0!

  5. Another book my grand daughter needed or college. She tells me it was just what she needed. If you are thinking along the lines of some kind of music related business this book, she tells me is worth the purchase.

  1. Well let's just say that having the magic of Steve's guitar playing in your hands, being able to learn every lick played on the record is just amazing , I must add that this book not only will improve your guitar skills as an advanced player, but even beginners can learn from Mr. Vai studying his chordal proggresions, and musical arrangements, what else can I say, buy this book, buy the album, and get ready to shred your fingers.

  2. No way is this book gonna help you play the guitar! Prolly, you'll just want to set it ablaze! Hey, go ahead though and buy this thing! But you too will say, "Look at all those notes!" Because there's simply too many notes!

Transcription, tran-smiption! Sure its accurate - so what! Do you have 14 fingers? Because unless that or you've the grotesquely oversized digits of Nosferatu, how else are you gonna play "The Mysterious Murder of Christian Tiera's Lover"? This book is nothing more than sado-masochism with staves!

Steve Vai is very evil as this book proves! In concert he stalks about the stage making lunatic faces! And complex music is for him like breathing - effortless! I hope he gets ashtma! He's great! Darn it!

  1. Upon hearing the "Alive in an Ultra World" album for the first time, i was, quite simply, blown away. Having drooled over the Fire Garden album, i thought that i had heard the most advanced evolution of technical guitar playing. I hadn't - Ultra World is better. Vai is truly supernatural in his ability, and the way in which he applies this ability on this record is masterful. "Jibboom" has to be the single most intense finger workout i have ever come across. Every track on the CD and in this book has something to offer the aspiring Vai. I would highly recommend it, but only to more advanced guitarists. Had i heard this when i started learning, i would have given up immediately and probably cried for months before committing suicide. Vai = Genius. Incredible.

  2. I am truly a Vai fan and have been hooked since hearing his Fire Garden album and then seeing him in concert back in 1996 when I lived in the Washington D.C. area. Hearing his Ultra Zone CD inspired me even more to get this sheet music. I liked the song Frank because I can play the whole thing from memory now. It's not too dificult and is in a straight forward key. The thing I like best about Frank is the ending where he does some guitar riffs that sound like he is using a slide, but he is actually using a whammy.

I don't have all of the effects like Vai does (Harmonizer), but most people probably don't. But, any Vai fan will love this sheet music as I think it does a good job of guitar tab transcriptions. All in all a great learning tool. My friend heard this CD and said that the 3rd or 4th song made him sick, (the one he sings about Go Bee), but aside from that a great album and sheet music...

  1. I checked out this book at my local music store and looked at the first page, the intro to Building the Church. It was just absolutely wrong! That was enough for me to not buy this. I wonder why steve didn't proof read this book.

  2. The transcriptions in this book appear to be very accurate. I have found no errors while delving through Vai's incredibly intricate arrangements. The book's construction is at or above the quality standards of similar publications. Rest assured, if you can hack it, it is worth the money.

  1. Shame the author had to call the damn thing Steve Vai: Guitar Styles & Techniques. This is just a tab and music book for some of Vai's more popular songs, with only one or two little tricks in there, like pick squeal... If you want to play like Vai, just practise. Reading a book like this isn't going to help you too much.

  2. To the reader from GUITAR HEAVEN - you are so desperately in need of a life... try to get one, because your existence simply irritates me! Anyway, this book is a very enjoyable read and it definitely provides a little insight into Vai's mastery of the fretboard!

  3. I just want to review any scale and how he works his guitar

  5. The great thing about this product is the fact that it includes the backing tracks to the music. You can play along with Steve Vai's band.

  1. I am actually not fond of Vai. He is a great guitar player but I think he plays for fame than for passion, but this album is truly a masterpiece. This album has licks that makes you say "wow!!" like the other albums and this album has PASSION. He really felt these songs. I strongly advice this album. It's definetely a five star. Don't miss it.

  2. A few years ago, a friend of mine challenged me to learn to play "Juice". Now I've been playing for 30 years and am adequately good, but it's just for fun: I have plenty of other commitments and to me, this was way beyond my league and I knew it. But my friend kept on plugging away at me, and in the end I started listening to the track at half-speed with Windows Media Player: still impossible!

Finally, I discovered this book and it all became clear. At the rate of a few bars a week, I put the whole piece together and a year later, I can do it! If cloning Vai is where you're at, there is nothing better. Since immersing myself in all things Vai, I have met him twice, and I know he finds the "robot copier" approach rather sad. I don't think he realises what a haul it is for a mere bedroom guitarist to approach his own level of technical ability, and there are very few people who can also be original and creative at that high standard. But then, he DOES play for 8 hours a day, every day...

The book is excellent - but don't kid yourself, it is WORK! But if you put in the effort, the reward is extremely satisfying. Good Luck!

  1. Buy this book.

For one thing, it's the manuscript to the best story I've ever heard. Why wouldn't you want to delve deeper into the world of Passion and Warfare?
Guitar technique-wise, it has everything in some capacity. At first this scared me off, because I couldn't figurepick or two-hand tap. Then I tried using the book as a learning aid, and things has taken off from there.
The liner notes are there in spades, and itzallgood. They provide an insight into what went on around Steve while this album was barreling through his mind.

    Nuff said.

    Buy this book.

  2. If you're a dedicated guitarist seeking a challenge, look no further. The tab book for Passion and Warfare attempts to show you every note that Stevie played on this wacky album. Sometimes this is not possible, because tunes like Alien Water Kiss are "entirely processed sounds," so there is actually an artistic rendering in place of a transcription.

The notes included at the beginning of the book show Vai at his literary best: creative, insightful, and interesting. The tab itself has a few problems, though. The notation for string bending is a little different then most guitarists are probably used to. Also, there are a few blatant errors (especially in the Animal and For the Love of God), but they are rare and fairly obvious when you come across them. For the most part, the transcriptions are very accurate.

One final warning: some of the music here is almost physically impossible to play. If you decide to attempt it, good luck. You will become a better guitarist for it. Buy this book.

  3. Turn off the phone, lock the door, and put the cat out. The transcriptions in this book are very well done with maybe a few minor glitches, another fine job by the folks at Hal Leonard. I will say it is helpful to be able to read staff notation, but not required. Other than that the layout of the tablature and arrangements make this a very user friendly book considering the contents. Anyone looking to take their playing to the next level (or world), this is for you.
