  1. It's so incredibly sad when an author holds such a strong grudge against a person that they would spend the time to write an entire book. Fitzgerald's grudge is so obvious; if anyone wants to read up on Sarah and get a TRUTHFUL picture of her, this is NOT the book. Unlike Fitzgerald, I have personally met Sarah. She is very gracious and caring, and is not the selfish, evil person that the author makes her out to be.

  2. As a owner of one of the internet's most well respected Sarah McLachlan websites as well as an expert in Sarah McLachlan Biography, I find this book insulting. Building a Mystery reads like a schizophrenic patient's transcript strife with vague references, endless garble, and little substance. Having read the book front to back, I found little about 'Sarah McLachlan' and mostly what seemed to be an ongoing, unguided defamation. Not only does the author refuse to latch onto a journalistic perspective with direction and commentry from the people who matter most to the heart of the person and concept of 'Sarah McLachlan', she becomes attached to the alleged stalker which took his like soon after a legal battle with Mclachlan. I could not identify with her perspective or logic and found the book uncomfortable to read. It is no wonder Sarah McLachlan's family and record company wanted nothing to do with the author or this book. I strongly recommend against wasting your money.

  3. This book is the biggest piece of crap I've ever read - and I read a lot! How it ever got published is the real mystery! Don't waste your time on it.

  4. This book borders on unreadable. Rather than write a biography about McLachlan, Fitzgerald writes an account of her own 'road trip' to discover the truth about McLachlan. I'm certainly not opposed to that format for a pop biography -- if the author and the supporting characters are dynamic and interesting and the text itself clearly written. Alas, Building a Mystery provides neither. A disappointment.

  5. I really don't care how much judith fitzgerald thinks she knows about the music "biz." And I really got tired of her trying to impress the readers with her vocabulary. If I wanted to read about her, I would have bought her own autobiography (please tell me there isn't one.)

No...I wanted to read about Sarah. That's why I bought the book in the first place. It was a mistake.

  1. This book provides no more than less of everything. Approximately more than 65% requires improv. because nothing is written. Some of the times, no bass cleff, and sometimes, no treble cleff! Only the singing notes. Hmm...I wonder if you are not Sarah Mclachlan herself, how are you supposed to play this?! I am a one of the hardcore Sarah fans and I would only recommend this book to others who play music with Sarah and of course, her! Well, except you are as excellent as a performer as Sarah. So then, you will have fun with this book.

  2. I got this book thinking it was written with the treble cleff. I realized after I got it that it had no treble cleff and only had guitar music on it. This book is not for piano players...

  3. To the previous comments, this book is not meant for piano. If you read the description it says that the book contains "note-for-note guitar transcriptions with tab." I'm not really sure how they missed that...

5 comments about Sarah McLachlan Collection: Piano, Vocal, Guitar.
  1. I really loved the CD. However, this book was not good. I expected a lot more. The songs were simplified. The song I really wanted to play, Posession, was not the piano version on the CD. I think that it is not a good book to buy if one is a serious piano player.

  2. I personally love this book. The songs are a bit simplier than the album version, but these versions are so great. My favorite to play on the piano is Mary. I really recommend this book to anyone who loves Fumbling Towards Ectasy.

  3. Guitar chords & addition tab section, piano, and vocal music. Sarah's sheet music is kinda weird sometimes, but it works. All the songs look fairly easy to play (on piano), but I haven't had time to work on any from this book yet. It includes a few songs from her first 2 albums, then the entire Fumbling Towards Ecstacy album. There are also a few pages of great photos of Sarah.

  4. In the "Sarah McLachlan Collection" songbook (vocal/piano/guitar), there are illustrations drawn by Sarah, hand-penned lyrics and a centrefold of concert photos that makes this a feast for the eyes as well as the ears. "Collection" covers Sarah's first three studio albums: Touch ("Vox," "Ben's Song,"), Solace ("Drawn To The Rhythm," "I Will Not Forget You," "Lost,") and Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (the title of which was taken from Wilfred Owen's poem "Dulce et Decorum est" that features the line "An ecstasy of fumbling") ("Possession," "Path of Thorns," "Wait," "Plenty," "Good Enough," "Fear," "Circle," "Ice," "Ice Cream," "Hold On," and "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy").

The arrangements are greatly simplified, especially "Possession." It should be noted that this is *NOT* the piano version of "Possession" that was a hidden track on "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" (and also featured on the "Due South" soundtrack). This transcription is from the album version, and it is very, very basic. You will want to add your own embellishments to make it workable.

However, most of the songs closely resemble their album counterparts and are a joy to play. I love the shimmery buoyancy of "Vox," the Loreena McKennitt-like musings of "Drawn To the Rhythm," and the high-strung melancholy of "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy." This is a wonderful addition to any fan's Sarah McLachlan collection.
(Note: there is a section devoted to guitar tabs for all of you guitarists out there)

  5. Includes: (from Touch) Ben's Song* Vox (from Solace) Drawn to the Rhythm* I Will Not Forget You* Path of Thorns* Lost (from Fumbling) Possession* Wait* Plenty* Good Enough* Mary* Elsewhere* Circle* Ice* Hold On* Ice Cream* Fear* Fumbling Towards Ecstasy*

This is one amazing songbook! I have never been more impressed with a transcription of Sarah's music. There are so many songs here that I absolutely love, and I can just sit down and play them. The arrangements are great--not too hard, but not one-note, occasional chord, melodies either.

The Sarah McLachlan Collection also includes six pages devoted to full-color pictures of Sarah, which are beautiful. It also has lyric pages before each song, with captivating illustrations/photos in the background.

All over, this is so perfect. The arrangements are completely in line, the design is awesome, and there is even a guitar tab in the back, which I (embarrassedly) admit to not having checked out yet. I'm sure it's awesome, though, just like everything else in this completely wonderful songbook.

  1. Includes some of Sarah's songs from Touch, Solace, FTE, and Surfacing.

At times, the "easy piano" of this can get slightly irritating, but that is easily remedied by the purchase of the other Sarah McLachlan Collection, which is slightly more on the mark. However, this collection is perfect for when you want to sit down and PLAY something-you know the times: you need to relax, you're waiting for someone or something, et cetera, et cetera. These are songs you can just sit down and plink out-it's a bit of a relief.

This is definitely a Sarah collection worth getting. Just plop down on the bench, sight-read a few of her totally amazing songs, and feel good about yourself. Cheap thrills, I know, but it really does work.

  2. Unfortunately, this book does not do justice to Sarah McLachlan's music. I love her music but this book was really disappointing. You can barely recognize any of the songs when you play from this book. In my opinion, the arrangements are very poor. Granted this is easy piano, but I have played other similar books and they sound much better. I highly recommend NOT to buy this book. As a matter of fact, I will be more than happy to send you my copy. I rated this book with two stars because of the nice cover.

  1. Includes: Fallen* World on Fire* Stupid* Drifting* Train Wreck* Push *Answer* Time* Perfect Girl* Dirty Little Secret

Really nice transcription of Sarah's Afterglow. The songs, when played on the piano, sound just about right, except for the fact that the melody line is always there. They definitely need a little interpretation here and there, but all in all this is great. The music is wonderful to play in itself, and singing to it is also fun (as long as you don't compare yourself to Sarah!). I haven't tried many of the songs with the guitar chords, but they also seem to be in line.

A perfect gift for any musician who's a fan of Sarah-even the not-quite-so-fanatics will enjoy. The piano is not too advanced, and the guitar chords are diagrammed along with the music. This is really a wonderful book of music.

  2. I loved it the instant I started playing it, what else can I say? The transcriptions are quite accurate and sound good on the piano. The vocal part requires that you listen to the CD to know what it is actually supposed to sound like on the verses, as Sarah changes them a bit. The piano part is a good mix of the original piano part plus some of the synth and guitar parts, a mix that is very pleasing to the ear. Enjoy!

  1. I`m not a great pianist but I have been playing for a short while and I love Sarah`s music. I must say this book is excellent. Angel sounds amazing as well as Do What You Have To Do. The melody for Angel is pretty easy so it isnt very difficult. I Love You sounds absolutley AMAZING! Even though the studio song isnt done with the piano it sounds really beautiful solo on the piano. The best song on here is Last Dance, which is my personal favorite. The translations are almost exactly what you hear on her albums but Sarah does a little improv that adds a bit more to the songs thats not in the sheet music. A must for every pianist who is a fan!Great for guitar too.

  2. I own both of Sarah McLachlan's piano songbooks ("Sarah McLachlan Collection" and "Surfacing") and this is my favourite of the two. I've been playing piano for fourteen years and I've been a fan of Sarah for just as long. "Surfacing" features piano transcriptions that sound almost exactly like the CD. "Building a Mystery" captures the shimmering guitar intro and saucy feel, "I Love You" is a haunting piano solo that trails off into silence, "Sweet Surrender" was my least favourite....that haunting guitar intro just didn't cross over to piano as well. "Adia" sounds just like the recording, as does "Angel," and "Last Dance" performs beautifully (a musical saw played the melody on "Surfacing"). "Full of Grace" was featured on the "Moll Flanders" soundtrack a number of years back and is very delicate; "Witness" becomes a powerful song on piano with its striking, rhythmic bass chords that underscore the melody. "Black and White" was another song that I routinely skip over--somehow the piano just doesn't do it justice. This is the best transcription of popular music that I've ever had the pleasure to play--it is at times haunting, assertive, lovesick and playful. If you are a Sarah McLachlan fan you'll also want to check out the "Sarah McLachlan Songbook" that features songs from "Touch" and "Solace" along with "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy."

  3. This is a guitar tablature book as the description . BR>By the way this is an excellent book. Standard guitar tab book with excellent transcriptions of all 10 songs from the album. Additional feature the great artwork.

  4. Includes: Building A Mystery*I Love You*Sweet Surrender*Adia*Do What You Have To Do*Witness*Angel*Black and White*Full of Grace*Last Dance

It's always great to be able to sit down and play these beautiful songs; this is a great transcription of Surfacing. My only complaint is that Angel was taken down a half-step from the original D flat major-of course, that is me being lazy. I can always take it back up.

All in all, though, this deserves a resounding five stars. The arrangements are just gorgeous, and it's always a rush to be sitting there playing a Sarah song. You can't help looking around to see who is watching. If there's someone nearby when I'm playing, I usually end up scaring them away by stopping every few seconds and saying "Isn't this awesome?"
