3 comments about John Denver - The Complete Lyrics.
- I love the lyrics of John Denver. I always have. And to find them all in one neat little volume is great. The commentary that is provided on certain songs was written by John for his anthology songbooks. I recogonize every one of them. And I like that even the lesser (and downright UN-known) songs are included.
The little blurb by Tom Paxton is touching and to the point and was a treat to read. However, Mr. Okun, if you're reading this, PLEASE, OH, PLEASE, do NOT perpetuate the "John Denver Never Wrote a Song In A Minor Key" myth! I can think off hand of at least two songs without blinking: "Wooden Indian" From "Poems Prayers and Promises" is written in E Minor. In fact that is the only chord in the entire song. (A very powerful song, at that). And "Aspenglow", best known from "Rocky Mountain Christmas" is in A minor. There are a few others as well. (That I'm sure John would have known about). The inclusion of the myth is the only reason that I've given this 4 stars and not 5. I'm a stickler for accuracy.
- There are a couple typos/errors in the book, but nothing significant or that would reduce its inherent value.
HOWEVER... What does "The Complete Lyrics" mean to you? If it means the book contains lyrics to all the songs JD wrote or sang, that'd be incorrect. There are a TON of songs (even ones that he wrote!) that are not included in the book. So I'm left with the final conclusion: Of the songs that ARE included, yes, their "complete" lyrics are there. But wouldn't you assume that ANYWAY? DUH! I feel the word "Complete" in the title is misleading.
- Overall I like this book. The foreword by Tom Paxton and the introduction by Milt Okun are well worth reading. The comments about the songs are the best part of the book as they tell about how these songs began and developed and the people and places that had such a strong influence on them.
The only dissapointment came from finding neither music or chording in the book which was not a fault of the book itself but rather of the limited information about the book that was available from the description
All in all this is a very good book if you are a John Denver fan and a great help to those of us who have a hard time remembering the words sometimes

1 comments about Poems, Prayers and Promises: The Art and Soul of John Denver.
- Being a huge JD fan, and a guitar player, I felt compelled to buy the song book. I wish all the songs had tabulature however, since I currently cannot read standard notation. I also wish Cherry Lane had put some additional John Denver photo's and other stories from others. The book is good and I recommend it to anyone who is a JD fan will get a lot out of it.
I would have given this 5 stars, but due to the things mentioned above, I feel like 4 is fair. Sure do miss the music and the man!

- This is a really excellent music book. The arrangements are beautiful and, while some of them are challenging to play, are well worth the time. The arrangement of Annie's Song is expecially very pretty. I definitely recommend it if you like John's music and some wonderful songs to learn.
- This is a FUN book! There are a lot of songs (34 of them!)The arrangements are very nice, and they range from easy to play, to more of a challenge, so there's something for everybody. I highly recommend it! It's a great way to get some fun piano (or guitar) practice and enjoy the beauty of John's songs.

1 comments about John Denver & The Muppets - A Christmas Together.
- "Back by popular demand!" reads the blurb. In a manner of speaking, perhaps. Having lost my original copy of this book years ago, I was elated to see it in print again. Upon its arrival, however, I was extremely disappointed to find this edition significantly altered from its earlier counterpart. I've been a performing folk musician for more than half my life now, and I no longer find sheet music necessary. In fact, it was not for the sheet music that I purchased this folio, but for the gorgeous color production stills appearing in the old version. Much to my chagrin, this wonderful material had been omitted from the new collection, the blurb's claim of "great color photos" notwithstanding. Furthermore, those of you who were interested in this book for its musical content should be aware that these are not authentic transcriptions, nor is the entire body of selections from the former collection included. I can recommend the current edition to the John Denver completist only.

3 comments about John Denver Authentic Guitar Style.
- I thought this book would reveal how John himself played these songs. Especially I hoped to learn the authentic intros to songs like Country Roads or Poems, Prayers & Promises. What you get is an easy guitar book that anyone can play. The arrangements are mostly just picking standard chords. It's not much more than most players could figure out from words and chords without tabs. Annie's Song has the most authentic arrangement. This book is worthwhile if you are beginning to learn guitar and to read tabs. However, I can hardly call it "authentic" if you want to learn John Denver's style.
- If you listen, carefully to the recordings, or watch a filmed concert of John performing, and theck the tabs in this book, you will see that they are remarkable. The person below, seems to be confusing Johns playing with the other guitars on the records. Some books include all guitar parts. Books in the authentic guitar style....series are just what they claim, the guitar style of the titular artist. So, if you want to play songs as John did, this is the book for you. If you want to play songs as the other guitar players on the records, then you'll have to transcribe those parts yourself.
- This is either exactly or so close to exactly as to what is played on the albums that I have heard. Don't know of a better way to play John Denver songs except from this book. I wish the publishing companies would offer this level of music to all musicians from every title and artist. Anyone very skilled with any ear or talent may be able to fake the songs (and I mean fake.) If one plays from this book and listens to the songs I suspect they will be more close than any book out there. My ears are old but I can tell you this is the very best of the John Denver books. There are only two other books of all JD's that I have ever seen that come close to this. One was a single song from one book and the other book only had portions of correct play.
And you get to look inside! Play it for yourself and listen. You'd have to be tone deaf not to know this is good.
Rant ahead!
My wife asked me to play a single John Denver song. This Old Guitar. The other official JD books were written for I don't know who exactly. She wasted money many years ago on almost every John Denver music book published. Sure they sort of were the music but don't get me in a court of law over a copyright on them because I'd swear they are not what was copyrighted. Sadly the sheet music industry is almost a big fraud scheme. I understand when they offer "easy" or other well displayed words to inform the purchaser of the presumed quality of the work. I do not understand how any company or artist would allow authentic or as recorded printed on some of this stuff. Shamefull! Just shamefull!
This book is not in the above rant.

5 comments about John Denver Anthology.
- John Denver was a musicians singer who just happened to play guitar. Dont discount him because he didn't play the "hip" role. I admire him because he stayed true to himself. As a musician I still use and go back over his material. It is great.
Dave
- If you play guitar, don't bother with this book. This is a piano book with some guitar chords thrown in. I've played guitar for more than 30 years (also play mandolin) and I am quite disappointed. The beautiful open chord intro to Eagle and the Hawk is missing, the 12-string guitar intro to Rhymes and Reasons is NOT there, and the key for Take Me Home, Country Roads is not original. Compare it to any "guitar" book and you'll see what I mean.
Piano players will most likely enjoy it, but then John didn't play these songs with a piano. I'll be looking for a better book.
- I selected this book as I needed 'For You'. I was very pleased with this arrangement. Great selection of 54 songs with reflections by John.
Chords including allowing all levels and guitar to enjoy and expand.
The glossy front and back covers make this a great gift.
I am very pleased with this John Denver Anthology and highlly 'reco' this Cherry Lane Music book.
- This is the complete works, except for a few songs that may be your personal favorites. Organized almost alphabetically. Decent range of difficulty across the songs, but most should be manageable by intermediate piano players. Also contains a couple of pages with John's thoughts about his favorite songs.
- This book is a good collection of John Denver songs. Although there are quite a few lesser known songs, the good ones are all here. Most are written in an easy to play key designed for beginner to intermediate guitar players, others will give you a little more of a challenge. Overall I would highly recommend this book for John Denver fans.

5 comments about John Denver Anthology for Easy Guitar.
- I just started playing the guitar a few months ago, and thought `if I could just learn a few John Denver songs I would be successful.' I got this book and now, in just a few weeks, I know even more then a few. I do wish the book would lay flat, or that the songs that had three pages would fold out, it's hard to flip pages in the middle of songs, but that's the way it goes.
- This book is great for me at my level. I have loads of fun singing these songs and performing for my wife and kids. This book has brought me a lot of joy.
- Although not new to playing guitar, I am no expert either. As a keen John Denver fan this anthology certainly works for me and has given me a lot of pleasure. Some of the numbers (about half) will need to be transposed (or Capo'd) to be able to play along with the man himself - but then again some of us can't sing along in the same key anyway; so maybe the key supplied is better in some cases. The clear and fairly simple presentation is well worth the money.
- Great Anthology of most Denver fans favorites, easy chords, simple arrangements are very easy to play for beginner to intermediate guitar players, probably way too easy for accomplished players. Even able to use the book for keyboard fake book. All in all a worthwhile addition to my collection of guitar song books.
- I found this to be a real super guide to the words and chords of many of John Denver's songs. I really recommend it.
