  1. As a longtime James Taylor fan, this book was exactly what I had been looking for. It is the companion to JT's LIVE album of a couple of years ago. It contains complete sheet music as well as guitar chord blocks for those of us that don't read music. The songs covered in the book are a very good cross section of JT's hits. They are ( in order )

Sweet Baby James Traffic Jam Handy Man Your Smiling Face Secret O' Life Shed a little light Everybody has the blues Steamroller Blues Mexico Millworker Country Road Fire And Rain Shower the People How Sweet it is New Hymn Walking Man Riding on a Railroad Something in the way she moves Sun on the moon Up on the roof Don't let me be lonely tonight She thinks I still care Copperline Slap Leather Only One You make it easy Carolina in my Mind I will Follow You've got a friend That Lonesome Road

Along with all the great sheet music, there are several pages of pictures from the live tour. As you can guess, I highly recommend this book.

  1. What is this book?

    Song Lyrics
Vocal melody line with chords symbols above
Tab line that duplicates the melody.
There is the occassional (very occassional) introduction or interlude in tab, but the tab is very siimplistic.

There is NO piano accompaniment line.
    There is NO other tab.

This book is ONLY for a rank beginner.

    I'm sorry I bought this.

  1. This book of sheet music is ideal for the acoustic guitar player who wants to learn more about the "James Taylor Style" of playing.

Taylor uses many guitar chords in his songs that are not normally seen by the everage guitar player. Every song in this collection of his early hits has specific chord diagrams to help you through the difficult learning process.

I have gotten many hours of pure enjoyment from this book and anticipate many years of the same.

If you are a James Taylor fan, this is a "must buy." You will not regret it!

  2. The transcriptions in this book are 100% dead on, they play exactly like the CD, which is great if thats what you are looking for. However, they have one huge flaw in them.

Many of the songs use a capo. The tab has the chords in both the key you are playing in, and the relative capo key, which is great. However, the tab is written as if you do not have a capo.

For example, the first chord in "youve got a friend" is an A, but because of the capo at the second fret, you play a G. This would normally give you tab that had a 3 on the lowest string, to play the G note, however, you are really on the 5th fret because of the capo. The tab has a 5, instead of the more intuitive 3. This makes it very difficult to play, because you have to constantly transpose the notes as you are playing.

  3. Despite what you may think from reading the other reviews, this edition does not include guitar tablature. The one that does has the same cover as this, but has a different ISBN.

  1. I wish this book was available years ago. When I started playing guitar 20 years ago, my goal was to learn to play like JT. This book features guitar tablature arrangements that are very faithful to what you hear on JT's records. The only reason I don't give the book 5 stars is that it lacks some of the songs most of us would expect given the title. However, the book DOES contain the all-important "Fire and Rain", "Carolina in My Mind", "Sweet Baby James", and my personal favorite, "You Can Close Your Eyes"

  2. The songs are by JT, the transcribing is by Colgan Bryan, and the book is a Hal Leonard. Can't find Kr Schonberg anywhere in the book. Anyway, whether these songs are JT's best is debateable, but they are good ones. Chords used in each song are diagrammed clearly, the tablature is found beneath the standard music notation, and each song is several pages. I am unable to read standard music notation. Unfortunately, there is nothing in the tablature to indicate beat/timing/rhythm of the songs: just numbers on lines. There's no CD with this book. The standard music notation probably shows how this song is supposed to be played, but again, unfortunately, I cannot read standard music notation.

  3. I have been a JT fan since that day way back in the fall of 1970 when i purchased the original Apple album and Sweet Baby James at EJ Korvette in NYC - (for $2.69 each).

JT is a great player - his style is highlighted by a moving bass, unusual chords, and rhythmic syncopation - it's a difficult style to replicate. Not to mention those classic JT licks!

I've checked all the JT tab books out there. Both James Taylor Greatest Hits and James Taylor Classic Guitar Tab are accurate - but - they do something very strange. As many of you know, JT capos his guitar. These two volumes correctly identify the capo position but the tab reflects the actual fret rather than the relative fret. Now I read music and Tab well enough to figure out what's happening - but these two books just make you work far to hard. Thumbs down for those guys.

Anyway - this volume - The Best of James Taylor - does it correctly. Tab reflects the relative position. No matter where you capo, it's easy to figure out.

As for accuracy - the Tab is very accurate. For those wishing to truly get that JT sound - this is it (until Homespun Tapes finally gets JT to make an instructional DVD - what about it Happy?). This book really does a great job of getting the chords and picking style correct. Thank you.

Finally, song selection - there are so many great JT tunes - no single volume is going to make everyone happy. Personally, I wish this included Something in the Ways She Moves and You've Got a Friend - however, there are enough great tunes here to keep you busy.

Nice to have - it would have been nice if the publisher had included instructional CDs.

Thanks Colgan Bryan for doing such a great job!

  4. First of all, you can't be too disappointed about whether You've Got A Friend is included in this book or not. It was originally written by Carol King. JT also is a songwriter/singer. It makes sense that the Best of James Taylor should include his own compositions. If you want You've Got A Friend, you should look at this book called Acoustic Guitar Bible. It has a great collection of acoustic songs(recorded version) that are accurate and the book is relatively cheap.

  5. This book is helpful because it has excellent guitar tabulation. Often I find tabulation coming across too complicated or too simplistic. This one gave the right amount of information to play the songs correctly and not over-burden me with too much technical stuff. Also, a very nice group of James Taylor songs!

  1. I just adore sheet music and no sheet music is complete without a title from a favorite artist is it? I gave this gift lovingly to my mother, who really enjoys his music. There is something very powerful in his lyrics and music. The lyrics transcend generations. When Taylor says in "Fire and Rain," "I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end," we don't know if he was overjoyed at the warmth of the day or if he was mad at the world and he didn't want it to be a happy place. Either way, it's brilliant. Don't take my word. See for yourself.

  2. this was a great gift for the young guitar player who loves this singer songwriter.

  1. I taught myself to play guitar over ten years ago. After learning the basics through a chord dictionary, I bought this book, being the fan I am, and started playing fingerstyle. It was so exciting to me to attempt to play these songs, though frustrating! I look back now at some songs that I thought I never could play and feel good about the progress I've made. I still go back to this book today to learn something new or better. If you like JT and play guitar or piano, you need this book! I then bought Volume 2 and will purchase the new, Volume 3.

  2. I was disappointed. More at what was not in the book than what was in it. This book only covers a few of his many albums. I have no complaints about the music that is in there but I had higher expectations when it said JT complete. I missed the "Vol. 1" hidden down by the ISBN #. Which is my own fault. This is Not James Taylor Complete. This is James Taylor Vol. #1!

  3. The music, lyrics, and guitar chord diagrams, for almost 70 songs. Although I do not own all the albums, the book appears to contain all the songs from the albums "James Taylor" "Sweet Baby James" "Mud Slide Jim" "Gorilla" "One Man Dog" and "Walking Man." A must-own for the JT fan.

  4. a fine piece of work for the james taylor fan...BUT ...how can anyone call a book complete...when it isn't???? There is NOTHING complete about this. My lesson...don't believe anything the marketing gurus set before you!!! If it says complete....it's probably only the beginning fragment of a potential scam. if it says final...don't bet on it! there is more than likely a sequel waiting to be mass marketed next winter shopping season!

3 comments about James Taylor: Classic Guitar Tab (Authentic Guitar-Tab).
  1. I can't believe this is called authentic guitar tab. Tab means tablature, where every note the guitar plays is shown in tablature notation.

  2. I just bought the book. It is absolutely authentic guitar tab, with every note transcribed. The only drawback is that when a capo is used, the notes aren't relative to the capo. But other than that, this is an excellent book with all of JT's early classics.

Beginners beware, James uses millions of chords and picking patterns that
    make the songs quite difficult.

  3. This book arrived promptly, in perfect condition and exactly as advertised. A great gift.
