  1. If you look back at the career of Sir Reginald, you realize what
an influence he's been for the Decades! I got hooked in early'71
& will continue to stand by EJ the DJ.Going on 40 yrs.in the biz!
He's a Legend! Sure he had his share of lows, but great artists
always do! If they have the will to continue, they go on & that's
VERY fortunate for fans like myself who's been there thruout his
ups & downs.Him & Taupin are 2 of the most influential songwriting duos in the History of Pop/Rock/Opera!/Disney Soundtracks...Not too many Rock stars can boast the achievements
of Mr.Dwights! He's pulled me thru numerous crises & I'm eternally greatful for that! I wish I could talk to him-1 on 1-
& THANK him in person! Lots of memories. He's "The One"!

  2. Exuse me, I speak to English very little.
I am from Russia. I was Elton Live Concert in Moskow and I buying
this book. It's great book of great performer. 100 very beautiful
songs. Amazon like me and I will be glad if it mini review help to you. Thank you.

  3. If you only like Elton John's songs a little bit, this is the book to own. The book includes all of the songs you need. My biggest problem is to find all of the songs on CD. This is a complication to grow with.

  4. THis collection contains all his best songs! The arrangements are original and not dumbed down for the begining player.
I have done internet searches and not found a more complete collection any where near this price. It was just what I was searching for!

  5. The publisher Hal Leonard calls this the "Deluxe Collector's Edition" and that's exactly what it is: It's very pretty, great-looking gift, looks great on the shelf. But the first hint that this might not be as ultimate as you'd like comes the moment you open it: it doesn't stay open nearly as well as you'd hope.

This collection's best feature is that there are more songs here than you will find anywhere else at the price. There are over 100-songs here, including rarities you won't find printed in other books. Still, it's something of a quantity-over-quality approach: "Someone Saved my Life Tonight", "Something About the Way You Look Tonight", and "Sacrifice" aren't in the right key. But if you want "Skyline Pigeon," you'll only find it here.

It's also important to note that These Are Not Transcriptions. Meaning that this is not what Elton John plays exactly (for that, look to the Elton John Keyboard Book). The melody-line is built-in to the right-hand, and it's somebody else's interpretation. This is terrific for folks who don't sing, don't want to sing, but still want to hear the melody. This is irritating for folks who want to sing along with the music without the melody echoed in the piano.

It is what it is. Decent interpretations, incredible selection, at the expense of something more detailed and accurate, for 3x the price of other books. I'd suggest getting it only if you must have every song of Elton's you can possibly get, as you can find his biggest hits at the same or better quality in a different collection for cheaper.

5 comments about Aida: Vocal Selections (Pvg).
  1. I didn't know what I was ordering at the time because of the lack of description given by this website. This is the music book containing the notes for the music in Aida. It's set up well and it's easy to play. The music is written in both piano and guitar form.

  2. This book is excellent - it contains piano music for most of the songs in the musical, and the transcriptions are largely faithful to the very pianistic Broadway score. All of the songs are complete, containing the piano versions of the instrumental solos found in the actual score. It also has guitar chords and lyrics for singers, with a separate line for the singers' notes, complete with harmonies. Unlike many Broadway music books, this one is very thorough and does not disappoint!!! Although that playing some songs in their entirety may be a difficult task for beginning pianists, the result of playing the music from this great musical is well worth the effort, and I'm sure that pianists and singers of all levels will enjoy this book.

  3. This book is very thorough, includes most all of the songs from the show. Chords are provided for less advanced musicians, but the piano score is quite difficult - not for beginners! Intermediates will be able to play about half the songs easily. True to the soundtrack, and all the parts are provided as well as the lyrics and details about which character is singing. Love this book!

  4. I love Elton John's music, but this show is disappointing overall. It seems as if, by constraining himself to the Broadway style, the music becomes boring at times. Most of these songs need expert performers to retain the interest of the audience. This just isn't up to the Elton John/Bernie Taupin collaborations we are used to.

  5. This is one of the greatest musical books I have purchesed! The music is great and when you hear yourself play it, it feels like you have always been the one playing it on the CD. Some of the songs have 5 or 6 #'s & b's in them. But it's a challenge to learn them!!!

  1. This book is a MUST have for everyone that wants an Elton John songbook for the guitar and piano. I really advise this book!!!

  2. I bought the book and sold it not too long after. It is your typical piano sheet music book where all someone did is put the vocal line in the right hand and a few basic chords/arpeggios in the left hand. Absolutely nowhere near how Elton actually played the songs on the piano. The book is complete garbage. DO NOT buy it.

  3. Theres always a problem with books like these. Elton John is very good Piano Player and the problem for anyone compiling a volume like this is, do they try and transcribe Eltons own accompaniment to his vocal and then print the vocal line separately, or do they just print the melody and not attempt the accompaniment. This book does both.

For example "Burn Down the Mission" has the vocal line separate and the two main staves are reserved for an approximation of Eltons accompaniment. This particular track is well done and the essence of Eltons Piano style can be seen here.

There are many other tracks where this isn't done (i.e. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road) and the melody is played straight without the distinctive fills behind the tune. Even played well these versions sound pretty average, because when the melody is incorporated Eltons Piano style goes out the window.

However to amalgamate the melody and accompaniment would result in difficult arrangements for the amateur Pianist so it is mostly avoided in this volume. This book also omits any Piano solos (such as on Bennie and the Jets). Chord symbols are provided.

It contains 50 songs the earliest being Your Song, Border Song, Take Me To The Pilot and Sixty Years On (all 1970) the latest being Ball and Chain, Blue Eyes, Empty Garden and Legal Boys all from Jump Up (1982).
There are 7 tracks from GYBR.

I would rate the difficulty level as moderate. For authentic Elton John Piano transcriptions you are best to look at the wonderful website Eltonscafe.

  1. I ordered this after seeing another copy belonging to one of my piano students. I love that there are no lyrics in this book. This is a true piano solos books. The songs are quite difficult - probably a grade 7 - 9 level. The songs they chose for this book are fabulous! I was expecting a typical pop song book, with arrangements that just don't sound quite right. But I was pleasantly surprised even when I just played the first bar or two of each song. They sound just like the real thing!

I am so happy with this book!

  2. I bought this collection based on another buyer's enthusiastic review, and I must say I was rather dissappointed. The selection of songs is good, and all arranged in easily playable keys. The arrangements themselves are, however, fairly plain and unimaginative, with very (extremely?) repetitive basic rythmic figures getting boring after a short while. For really good pianists, this book may be a very good foundation for improvisations, but I'm unfortunately not on that level.

3 comments about The Lion King - Broadway Selections.
  1. This book contains reasonable piano reductions from the Broadway version of "Lion King." The people at Hal Leonard have done a decent job at transcribing a score that relies heavily on percussion instruments, but no one should fool themselves into thinking that the piano will singularly be able to duplicate the multiple timbres used in the show's orchestration (I suppose you could prepare the piano ala John Cage, but I digress...). The reductions are often thin and unsatisfying to play (and hear), but anyone looking for the basic chord progressions or outlines of the show's score should be satisfied. So, if you want the music...buy it!

  2. These are great songs and my favorites. you can save alot of money buying it from amazon.

  3. I thought the book was like Awesome. Me and My friend Shasta and Tish were wow and I was like wow and yea.

  1. (Scuse Me While I Kiss This Guy) but full of great trivia.

  2. Great trivia, wonderful to amuse guests at a party with your bizarre musical knowledge and the real scoop on some musical "urban legends".
    A fun and easy read!

  3. I got this for my sister who loves to read and love pop culture. She really loved the book and finished it in one sitting. She said she found out a lot about the music industry she didn't know and she knows a lot.

  4. My sister got this for me, because I love to read and love pop culture. I loved this book and finished it in one sitting. I learned stuff about the music industry I didn't know, and I know a lot. Fun Read.

  5. This book turned out much better than I expected. There's all kind of rumors you've heard about rock history that are addressed here. Some are true, some are not and some are half true. I actually started reading this and didn't put it down until I was finished. That's very unusual for me. One example of the types of rumors discussed is as to whether the couple who make up the White Stripes are brother and sister of husband and wife. Doe's lead Zeppelin's song Ramble On refer to characters from the lord of the rings and can you hear the screams of a woman being murdered in the studio on the song Roller Coaster.

  1. It's quite a good book, just like the others I have from H&L. The only thing bothering me is that the pages keep turning when I'm playing from it. Couldn't that be changed?

But the music in it is just perfectly done!

  2. The material is excellent. Only wish if it had a coil to keep it open while playing.

  1. I found this book to be a great resource not only for performing Elton's songs but to analyze his stylistic traits and chord progressions from a theoretical standpoint. After sitting down for two hours just listening and reading along (which I recommend doing), I feel like I real know Elton (musically, that is). A must-have if you plan to cover these songs in a band or just entertain yourself and your friends.

Having said that, I think the editors got a little lazy in parts. The 'fills' as they call them are not consistently written and hard to follow when playing. There are also a few 'throwaway' songs, made to make the book longer but having no real appeal to anyone except EJ freaks. I'd much rather have Levon, Take Me To The Pilot, Grey Seal, Burn Down the Mission and Funeral for A Friend than Empty Garden, Blue Eyes, Friends and Little Jeannie. We'll have to hope for additions in the 3rd Edition, but what's in there is more than enough to get your feet wet! Enjoy!

  2. This book has revolutionized the way I play the keyboard. Often times, printed sheet music is only a loose guide for what is actually played on a recorded track. This book is almost verbatim what Elton is playing on the original recored versions of the tracks. This book is a definite for any serious musician and or Elton fan. It is very accurate and wonderful for an average player and for a seasoned player to expound upon and improvise. I agree with another reviewer that they should publish volume 2 for sure!!! and 3 and 4!!!

  3. I am interested in getting the original EJ piano music as I had a similar inclusive book years ago- and I HATE the silly chord melody arrangements-
BUT AMAZON NEEDS TO LIST WHAT ALL THE SONGS ARE SOMEWHERE just like they do in a CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get with it Amazon- it is hard to buy when you do not know what is in there!

  4. These songs are the real thing-written by SEJ himself! The level is intermediate to advanced but I am going to enjoy the challenge.

  5. This book has exactly what Elton John plays on the piano, for pretty much all of his best songs. It even includes some of the other instrumental parts if you want to incorporate some of them into your playing. Awesome stuff for anyone who wants to learn to accompany these songs. Elton John was quite a good pianist though so some of the parts can be quite hard if you're not a competent piano player.
