- Highly recommended if you are interested in how Chuck played it. Also,Mr. Sokolow's books and videos are always accurate and very insightful .
- I've been playing guitar for about 3 months now, and this is by far the easiest tab book I have. I would highly recommend this book for beginners. Don't get me wrong, it's tough but much easier than starting out trying to learn Zeppelin or similar bands. Without Chuck Berry, there would be no rock & roll.
- I've played guitar for 20 years and I still come back to Chuck Berry's work to tune up my skills and learn new approaches to the instrument. As a 16 yr. old I always dismissed this work as simplistic but as an adult I can see how innovative and driving it can be. The tab used in this edition is a little out of date for anyone who's used to modern guitar magazines or folios. Once you've learned those quirks you'll find the transcriptions are very accurate.
- Let's get it straight folks. Chuck Berry is the father, godfather, and true king of Rock n Roll. His talent buries Elvis. No argument could convince me otherwise.
Now then this is a book I have been searching for for years. It is very difficult to find anything Chick Berry in a music store, thankfully Amazon stocks it and now I am on my way to mastering the rock n roll classics as the master himself played them. Let's face it, ask 10 different guitar players to play the intro of 'Johny B Goode' and I guarentee you will hear 10 different versions. This book gives the true notes for that song and all songs herein. To me 'Johny B Goode' is the greatest rock n roll song ever written. Everytime I hear it I am moved. The guitar, the lyrics, the energy, the song is perfect.
Chuck's style is not too difficult. If you are a metal head and play the power chords religiously, this book will not be too much of a challenge. For me, the guitar's biggest challange is speed. I'd love to be a shredder, but alas I've been battling speed all my life. I've been playing guitar for over 20 years now. Chuck is fast paced, but with practice you can play up to his speed. That will give you a boost of confidence as you listen to and play other songs.
The favorites are in this book 'Johny B Goode', 'Roll over Beethoven', 'Guitar Boogie', 'School Days', 'Almost Grown', ' No particular place to go', 'Memphis' and others. However I was a little bit disappointed that 'Brown Eyed Handsome Man' and 'Sweet Little Sixteen' were NOT included.
BUt that is OK, you know what? Once you master this book, you can probably learn enough of Chuck's style to play Chuck songs not in this book. Many of his songs are VERY similiar. I'm not saying he plagerized himself, but if you are a Chuck fan you know what I mean.
So have no fear. This book is challenging, but it is so much FUN! It is a great time to play a Chuck Berry CD while playing along. You'll find yourself smiling as you play lick after lick and getting down with some of the greatest rock n roll ever recorded.
And yes, this book has tabulature and standard notation in case you needed to know.
- A very very good book for someone who likes to play the old classics as I do. I highly recomend it.
