  1. We love the music on the CD and wanted the guitar book for my son to play, but there were ten pages missing from the book.

  1. Having only been playing the guitar for a year or so. I bought In session with Carlos Santana thinking it would be something I could aspire to in the next couple of years. Well I was wrong, with the well-structured cd, offering slowed down solos, and excellent backing tracks, I have nearly mastered Moonflower in only a couple of weeks. Don't get me wrong in thinking this is only for beginners, so of the tracks are challenging to say the least! I thoroughly recommend this to anybody. It's the best tab book I've ever bought.....and there have been many!

  2. This is a wonderful tool for learning Sanatana songs. I want to check out the other titles in this series as well. The quality of the backing and solo tracks is excellent, and the selection of songs is very logical. I have been playing guitar for a year, taking lessons for about half that time, and this is challenging, but doable material. Highly recommended.

  3. I am an intermediate guitarist and although I will never match Carlos Santana, this product is great for learning the licks and methods of some of his greatest tunes. The backing tracks are adequate for playing along and learning the timing and the songs are varied enough to be challenging. The book is invaluable for reading the music or finger placement. All in all, a fun product that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

  1. Santana and his great music are back. All I can say is that this book is excelent. If you want to play Santana's songs like they really are played, I recommend this item. The transcriptions are accurate and reliable. This is a "must have" item for Santana's fans.

  2. I started to listen to Santana's music when I first listened to Smooth. The feeling and energy that Carlos Santana gives can not be found from the others. This book is really great. The tabs are accurate. You are not just playing Santana's song with this book, but also practicing your guitar skills. You can play the sounds what you listen from the CD. This book is not just a must-have for Santana's fans but also for all guitar lovers.

5 comments about Soul Sacrifice: The Santana Story.
  1. This is THE definitive book on a great artist whose contributions to cultural expression through music is under-appreciated today. Leng aptly describes Carlos Santana's early years, the struggles toward and accompanying fame, and the challenges he had to overcome along the way (cultural and professional). If you love music of any kind, you will enjoy this taste of history; if you appreciate Santana especially, you will savor this biographical feast.

  2. This biography does an excellant job in covering the early life of Carlos Santana and his entire career in his band. The information is based mostly on facts, and doesn't offer enough emotional insight from Carlos and his other band members. This book also didn't have enough about Carlos Santana's spiritual and political views. Basically, this book does an amazing job at covering the chronology of the band, information about each album, and information about the different guys who played with the band at one time or another. Look mainly to this book for straight facts and an excellant biography of Carlos' early life and the beginning of the first Santana band. Don't be surprised if there isn't much emotional insight or highly detailed information about the Santana band past 1974. The only thing better than this book would be if Carlos wrote his own biography.

  3. First, I am a professional guitarist of 25 years who believes Carlos Santana has only four guitar peers: Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, George Benson, and John McLaughlin. So this is a biased review. And now the review:

It's about time a book attempts to document the history and significance of this important musician and band. Mr. Leng, a first-time author, has done a fine job. Here are six challenges that Mr. Leng met with impressive success:

    (1) Explaining how a very specific aspect of Mexican music - playing melodies expressively - influenced Carlos's style.

    (2) Explaining how each individual member influenced the band's sound.

    (3) Explaining the difficulties of keeping everyone - from pop fans to jazz fans to record companies to managers to musicians - happy.

    (4) Explaining Carlos's conscious recording of "corny" commercial music to finance the recording of his more adventuresome music.

    (5) Explaining how Carlos is trapped (for better and for worse) in the "Santana Band."

    (6) Explaining the true weight / quality / genius / level / importance / influence of Carlos and the band.

    (7) Explaining the greatness (and that's an understatement) of the percussionists which have played in the band, particularly Armando Peraza.

    (8) Documenting the long list of non-Santana band artists with whom Carlos has recorded.

Sooner or later a professional music historian will publish a more comprehensive book - say 1,000 pages. This book will be aimed at more serious students of music history.

The book will expand as follows:

    (a) It will discuss Carlos's equipment. Carlos has influenced electric guitar and amplifier design more than any other modern guitarist except Jimi Hendrix. (b) It will explain in musical terms why Carlos's playing has so much "feeling." Put simply, Carlos uses a large variety of subtle nuances to make every note count. Like Pavarotti and Isaac Stern.

    (c) It will contain hundreds of photos.

I wish I could be the author of this great book. I would title it "Espiritu - Carlos Santana."

  4. As a historian, I was excited to read this book. Beginning to read it, however, the author wrote that Santana was born in 1947. He then states that Carlos returned to his home town in 1986 for his 53rd birthday. The author also makes a major mistake recounting the legend of our Blessed Virgen de Guadalupe, stating that the bishop was sent to investigate her appearance, and that her image appeared on his cloak. It was, in fact Juan Diego who was sent back to her to bring proof of her existence and it was his cloak that her image appeared on. The rest of the book was soured by these early inaccuracies. One wonders what other inaccuracies are listed as fact regarding Carlos Santana. It just goes to show you can't always believe what you read.

  5. I pretty much lost track of Santana after the third album, Santana III, until his resurgence a few years back. This book nicely fills in the gaps and makes the band's somewhat long and complicated discography finally clear as to where one should look back for lost gems. Mostly, way back. But no matter. Santana's music was always a cut above, going back to the early days in San Fran, no small thanks to the use of Latin percussion on many of the classic cuts. You won't find out much dirt from this tome, written by a former fan mag editor. But you will be taken back to a time when music making was slightly less corporate, though this was one of the bands that helped corporatize rock after Woodstock. This is a better written band bio than one would expect, though too light on previously unseen photos.

  1. Santana has always been my ultimate guitarist idol, and for a book like this to come out, I feel like I've actually had a workshop with Santana himself. It provides a number of easy to interpret tips and recommendations that have not only increased my confidence in improvisation, but also have allowed me to imagine during the play-alongs that I may one day meet a level of playing like Carlos'. My guitar techniques have without a doubt undergone significant improvements. This book includes all the classics, and is a must for any of the other Santana fanatics like me.

  2. I picked this up for working on my timing and feel, this is VERY well done, well ok ... the 2nd pack of tracks with actual guitar parts is, so so. I've spent hours just on Tracks '2' and '4' and I have to say this is the most fun I've had playing with out a real band around. You can work on your tone, timing, feel, get inventive, play it note for note and do not need to have other musicians going over and over it with you.
I'd also recommend the Dire Straits version but it's much harder to play along with. I will be buying more in this series for sure!

  3. If you like Santana music and have decent guitar skills, you will appreciate this book. First of all, a recommendation that applies to all the books with sheet music and tablature: the reader/player should be able to read AT LEAST the rhythmic info on the paper in order to take more advantage of the product. That is, one should understand when it is a quarter or eighth or sixteenth note, if it is on the down or up beat, when it is staccato or not. You can use the tablature for getting the "note", but try to be disciplined on the rhythmic front. And play slowly, with a metronome, before jumping to the performance tempo of the jam tracks. Believe me, it adds so much to your rhythmic performance. At least for me, certain passages are rhythmically challenging so for the time being I am inserting licks that I control while trying to keep the "key notes" of the solo there. Hey, that is a good exercise in improvisation!
I have not "jammed" with the CD yet but I've been playing the licks with special concern to timing. My opinion is that almost anyone will benefit from this book at multiple levels: the book might serve as a beautiful introduction to the syncopated cha cha rhythm by playing "Oye como va". It also offers busy rhythm comping with "Evil Ways" and "Persuasion". And for the soloists, of course a guitar student will be able to appreciate the soulful, bluesy phrasing of Santana ("BlackMagic Woman", "Europa")and hopefully become able to add some of Santana's magic to his or her own style. Finally, kudos for the authors for having included "The Healer", an overlooked gem of Santana (the intro is as good an exercise in playing both with a pick and the fingers as any other).
There is one thing that I miss: I think the author could have included an intro on the book highlghying a few of the "trademark" Santana licks and techniques so you can practive in a more structured way instead of jumping directly into the tracks. Also, more rhythmic information for comping (e.g. the author mensions the "bossa nova feel" of BlackMagic Woman but does not show it on paper) would be welcome. But hey, I am very pleased with the purchase and I intend to buy more books of the "jam with" series.

  4. The CD & book are very good to play along with, also the chords & notes are right in the book, only one thing they dont tell you, they are not the entire songs. Europa, Black Magic Woman, etc are all cut short & dont play through the guitar solos, so there are several minutes cut out of each song, so its not the entire song. If you dont care about the solos its fine, but this says its a jam, to me soloing is the best part of the jam & they are all cut out
