  1. The initial first run of this great book was not around very long and people have been begging since for a reprint and here it is! This one is hard to put down, it is intriguing, informative and FACTUAL, which most Buddy book are not (avoid the Amburn book at all costs). What is particularily nice is that it features a great deal of updated info about the last tour & crash, info about Roger Peterson, and a good deal about Ritchie & The Bopper that usually doesn't get included. Lehmer talks to people that were at the shows, helped with the Tour, etc. No wild theories here, just the facts. Top notch in every regard. You see any bad reviews here? 'Nuff said!

  2. Larry Lehmer has crafted one of the better journalistic books about a historical rock 'n' roll event. He brings a newspaperman's observations and senses to the project, which connects all the dots in the tragic last tour for Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. "The Day the Music Died" is not only entertaining -- somber and occasionally macabre in appropriate moments, and humorous elsewhere -- but it describes the days and weeks leading up to the tragic crash in Clear Lake through the eyes of people who were there. In each case, he paints a vivid portrait of a fallen star, making their stories all the more tragic. To read this book is to understand how American rock 'n' roll evolved from its early, innocent roots toward the fragmented, even chaotic market it encompasses today. I highyl recommend this book.

  3. This book is great because it not only tells of the careers of those involved in the Winter Party Tour, but also tells details leading up the crash (including stops in many small towns along the way). It was quite informative.
Buddy Holly is the best known, yet most elusive and enigmatic of all Rock 'n' Roll legends. This man was a genius. The way he constructed his songs was sensational.

  4. This is a great book. I have always been interested in "The day the music died" I had read several books and magazine articles about Buddy Holly's life but there was little in the way of the actual Winter Dance Party or the other musicians. I purchased this book and was shocked at how well and detailed the accounts of the musicians lives and the aftermath of the plane crash was. Larry Lehmer did an excelent job and should be commended on telling the truth not just what Buddy Holly's widow wanted or others who are wanting to cover the truth about what life was really like for all those involved. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in rock and roll, Buddy Holly or just 50's style music.

  5. This is such a great book. I really enjoyed reading it. It tells Buddy, Ritchie and J.P.'s story in a very interesting and easy to follow book. I would recommend this book to any Buddy fan. Five stars!

  1. For my recent birthday, my mom bought me a copy of this book. She didn't want to spend too much, and although I was skeptical at first, I actually enjoyed it. I was very surprised at how well the text flowed, considering there is just so much separate commentary throughout the course of it. As strange as it may seem, this event just fascinates me, and this book was a good source of information. ....

  2. Larry Lehmer's hardcover book entitled "The Day the Music Died" gives a very detailed review of the ill-fated Winter Dance Party in which Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. Richardson, aka "The Big Bopper" took part. If you would like to read a more concise version of these three singers I would strongly suggest you buy a copy of the paperback copy of "Behind the Music: The Day the Music Died." This book contains 122 pages and includes numerous pictures of the singers in addition to the crash site. Comments from family members and those who were close to the singers make up the prose of the book leading to accuracy in what they say. I read the book in three sittings. Make sure you have time when you sit down to read it because you will want to continue. I intend to order numerous additional copies to give as gifts to friends. Many thanks to authors Martin Huxley and Quinton Skinner for putting the book together.

  1. I have this music book and it is a must for anyone who enjoys Buddy Holly's music. The songs are pretty much the extent to what Buddy Holly recorded, and the chords are easy to follow. The sheet music is for piano or guitar. If you are just learning to play guitar, this book will help you learn rhythm guitar as you can play along with the records. You won't be sorry. I give it five stars plus!!!!!

  2. I have this book and it is a must for any Buddy Holly Fan. The book has the words and music to one of Rock and Roll's stars and artist who shaped Rock and Roll Music. If you have not yet bought this book, it is priced just right and if you plan on getting it, get it from Amazon!! The book also has some nice stories about Buddy's career and shows some nice photgraphs of Buddy with his wife and the Crickets. The songs in this book are so good. You have to get it!! Order it now!!!!

  3. I purchased this book hoping for transcriptions of my favorite Buddy Holly songs. I was very disappointed. Many sections of the songs are missing. Most songs only have about 60% of the song.

  4. I absolutely revere Buddy Holly. this book, however, fell short. I was a little disappointed with the tablatures. The songs are not transcribed in keys Holly used. If this was done to make the songs easier to play, a retranscription might be understandable. However, fairly simple songs are actually made somewhat difficult. An example is Peggy Sue. The song consists of a total of four chords in the key of E. Here, it is in the key of G and somehow there are five chords including two 7ths. Peggy Sue, as played by Holly has no 7ths. Not Fade Away is also a bit convoluted and transcribed in a more difficult key of E flat rather than the original (and easier to play) key of E. I was hoping to learn some other Holly songs but I can only pick out a couple from this book since the transcription is so convoluted. Having said all this, I enjoyed the photos and background material.

  5. I bought this book around ten years ago now, at a performance of "Buddy" the musical in London England. I always love to sing along, not always in tune! So I thought this the perfect book. It doesn't have all Buddys songs in it, but is an enjoyable and interesting book for new and old fans alike, with lots of interesting background information. As I am not a muscian the sheet music means nothing to me, but it came in useful when I married as my wife Ellen and I wanted True Love Ways played on the organ at our wedding. An enjoyable book go buy it!

  1. I bought this book for my fiance and since he has received it he has learned how to play buddy's songs the way he did. It also includes a little information over each song, such as when it was releases and who wrote it. The odd thing is that on some of the songs it states it was written by Charles Hardin while others state Buddy Holly. I never knew that Buddy used a kapo in some of his songs but that is why this book is great it gives you all that information so you learn to play it right. The only dislike I had is it didn't have some of his well known hits in it. But a must own for any Holly fan wanting to play.

  2. I reviewed another Buddy Holly songbook some time ago and I was very critical because the tablature was absolutely weird, with keys transposed etc. This book is the real deal. The tablature is the way Buddy played it. In fact, I saw a stage show, the Buddy Holly Story, and the actor playing Buddy used a capo in "That'll Be the Day," and according to the tablature, this was accurate, that is indeed how Buddy played it. Personally, I play the song in the same key but with different chord positions without a capo.

Buddy Holly songs are simple and even though this is an accurate tablature, even a fairly novice guitarist can benefit from this book. In other words, this book is great for the guitarist who wants to accurately play the recorded version as well as the guitarist who needs easy transcriptions. In addition to the chords, tablature and lyrics, this book includes interesting notes that gives insight into the artist and his music. If you revere buddy Holly as much as I do, I highly recommend this book.
