5 comments about Rethinking Thin: The New Science of Weight Loss---and the Myths and Realities of Dieting.
- The book challenges many widely established beliefs on dieting, controlling weight, and obesity on the basis of a review of research on the topic (some of which has not received as much attention as it deserved because it did not fit current expectations and industry interests). The book does not suggest a path to shed any extra pounds, but makes you think about your personal and our societal relationship with weight, obesity and thinness.
- a well-researched and concrete book i contstantly recommend to anyone interested in food, weight or health. probably my all-time favorite read in the generalized 'health' category.
also changed the way i view the obese and helped me overcome my own eating issues. a truly wonderful book.
- As someone in the healthcare industry, who has read all the popular books and has a solid grounding in the human sciences, it is refreshing to read the actual facts from research. There are people who's livelihood depends on the promotion of the myth of weight loss. As someone who has lost and gained back 50 lbs twice while visiting the gym 3 to 4 times a week, I can attest that diets and exercise don't work.
Genetics is king.
Over 100 years of peer reviewed laboratory research bears this out. This book is well documented to back up the information given. No more Body for Life or Dean Ornish nonsense. No more guilt for feeling weak when a dieter fails. 99% of dieter fail and that puts us strongly in the NORMAL category of people. As is pointed out, the only successful method of weight loss over a period of 3 years or more is surgery.
Finally someone comes out and tells the truth.
- I picked up this book after reading countless books and articles (in consumer magazines, albeit, not medical journals) about weight loss. So many books are single minded in saying what they need to in order to support their method of weight loss and conveniently do not include any evidence that throws into their idea into question. Because of this I was interested in this book because it sounded like it would tell the other side of the story and in fact it did.
The book weaves the stories of overweight Americans participating in a medical study to lose weight (either on Atikins or a low fat diet) with facts and statistics about dieting in America going all the way back to the 1800's. Although I enjoyed reading the stories of the study participants I found the latter to be the most intriguing. I think I have a tendency to think of dieting as something largely taking place in the 20th and 21st century so it was interesting to hear about the remedies dating back much further.
Overall I think this book was intriguing and had a lot of great facts. The author makes the point pretty strongly that genetics largely come into play when determining a healthy weight range and yet, we are taught that we can weigh as little as we want if we only have enough will power and want it badly enough. I also thought the point that being over weight does not always mean a shortened life span and higher rate of death. There were so many interesting things brought up in this book though that it's hard to fully capture everything.
I think this book is good for anyone who is interested in the science behind weight loss but it is important to bear in mind, as others have said, that it may not have quite the uplifting quality of a lot of diet books since the bulk of it is poking holes in what we assume are the keys to weight loss. However, I don't think it is entirely negative because the book makes the point that it's bigger than just will power so with so much at play it's not all our faults if we cannot maintain the weight loss as we would like.
Overall it was a really intriguing book to read. I wouldn't say it gave me any insight into what I could do better to maintain my weight, but it was really interesting and thought provoking.
- Kolata convincingly describes both the pain of repeated dieting, by following subjects in a research study, while explaining the science behind the futility of weight loss programs.

5 comments about Losing Your Pounds of Pain.
- I really appreciate this book. I loved the caring tone and the way the author seemed to reach out and give the reader a hug! I think that so many of the stories and descriptions spoke to my heart about myself and friends that I found myself calling friends or emailing parts of the books so we could talk ideas! This is a gem! Thank you for writing it, Doreen.
- I had high expectations for this book, thinking that I'd find some interesting facts and research on overall emotional overeating, not just related to sexual abuse. Sadly, this book is heavily laden with disturbing and very graphic accounts of sexual molestation, incest and rape. I had a hard time reading through the disgusting experiences related in the book.
I feel nothing but sorrow to think that a human being could be subjected to such horrible acts and hope that those can be healed and live lives full of love and joy.
While it provides some useful ideas, such as excercise, affirmations and visualization to release the negative emotions, the book also lacked a comprehensive plan to help victims of sexual abuse deal effectively with their pain. Directly from her book:
"To uncover the unresolved pain, you usually need to recall some painful experiences from childhood and/or adolesce and determine who the perpetrator was. If you blamed yourself for any abuse that you suffered, then you need to remind yourself that, as a young person, you weren't responsible for the abusive or neglectful actions of others -even if you somehow felt responsible at the time."
Ms. Virtue advises people to seek professional help and get involved in psycotherapy. She also suggests a low fat diet, which is a pretty archaic advise and proven not very effective.
Unless you have had a similar experience as those related in this book, I don't think it would beneficial to you.
- Doreen speaks truth and honesty on compulsive and binge eating.
Anyone who has suffered from lose of control with eating will appreciate the depth and courage Doreen shares in this book.
- Doreen virtue shows us in her lovely book "Losing Your Pounds of Pain", that there is a connection between emotional pain and overeating.
This book has been a gem in supporting me in overcoming my emotional issues that have kept me locked in a place where I never thought I could overcome my problems with food and weight.
There are lengthy chapters about sexual abuse, that do get a little detailed, but she also talks about the pain of this moment and other childhood issues that may cause you to over eat.
I really enjoyed the last several chapters that are solution oriented, and have helped me tremendously on my journey. I would highly recommend this book.
- This isn't the first time a book by Doreen Virtue has helped me. She does manage to get close to problems and to help the readers get close to them too. She creates a safe, understanding path for getting to the heart of issues; readers are lead gently to the core of the problems of obesity.
Virtue acknowledges that many therapists connect sexual abuse with being overweight, but she doesn't stop there. She delves into other reasons which many times do revolve around sexuality, but aren't limited to it. No matter what the reason for overeating, the result is the same - a person ends up weighing more than they want to be.
She explores different cases histories from her experiences as a therapist. Readers can relate to the pain and gain cycle no matter what their issues might be and can use the information to move forward in breaking the cycle.
It helps to have a friend read the book with you. You need support to face some issues and hopefully you can support each other. Find someone at the gym or in your weight loss group. She has a great section on the psychology of "plateau." Hint: there's no such thing as "set point" except in your head.
I'll admit, I spent a week fighting the book after I started it. I put it aside and went back to my old habits. That's why having a partner helped, we talked through the tough parts and I could pick up the book and begin anew. It's a great book to work through weight issues with a life coach or therapist too. It's not a diet book. You have to change the way you think in order to change the way you eat and move.
This reviewer is disappearing slowly but surely.
Doreen Virtue's book is being held as an accomplice in this case.

- This is a wonderful book that really gets to the heart of why we are overweight and how to regain control over our eating. The emphasis on balance is right on target. Thank God for the First Place Program.
- "First Place 4 Health" by Carole Lewis is inspiring. It's not a diet. It doesn't PROMOTE weight loss - that is merely a byproduct of the healthier lifestyle described in this book. Basically, it shows the reader how to love the Lord with your heart, soul, mind and strength - the clever section breaks carry those headings. There are loads of successful testimonials and pertinent scripture verses. I love that the book doesn't promise a quick fix. Yes, certain results will appear quicker than others, but the author asks you to commit a year to the lifestyle. EXCELLENT!
The only thing I don't necessarily embrace is that the cover says, "discover a new way to healthy living." I disagree. This way has been around since the dawn of time. People just don't tap into its power in this way. Overall, this is an outstanding read.

5 comments about Kim Lyons' Your Body, Your Life: The 12-Week Program to Optimum Physical, Mental & Emotional Fitness.
- I really enjoyed reading this book. I'm a fan of "The Biggest Loser", so I wanted to read her thoughts on weight loss. The book is well-written and very easy to read. The book is divided into four subjects: It's All About You(Gear, Mind, Body, Goals; Journals; Fitness); Your Workout(Exercises); Your Nutrition (Food; Meal Planning); Your Future. I found the section on posture(Chapter 2) to be interesting. She goes into the different types of posture, which is helpful to me.....I have a swayback posture. She lists the muscles that I would need to work on to correct this bad posture. I haven't found too many authors who expound on this subject in a diet book. At the end of each chapter, she gives you "homework." Suggestions to help you prepare for this program, which ultimately is a lifestyle change. These suggestions are not mandatory, or hard to do. I am finding the "homework" is helping me to plan better and be well organized in my approach to beginning this program. This was lacking in my earlier attempts at losing weight. She is very big on planning and writing things down. There are three levels of weight training exercises, and there are some stretching moves. There are pictures of her performing each step to an exercise so that you do it correctly. I can't say that the information in this book is new, but it is the way that she presents it that makes the difference to me along with a few things that she does personally to motivate herself. I feel that the book is written as if she were sitting in a room explaining this in person to me. I felt her enthusiasm as I was reading. I've read other good diet books, but I can honestly say that I didn't feel any real enthusiasm coming from the authors. I think that this is a good book. She shows you how to safely go about losing weight, being healthy, and keeping the weight off for good. I highly recommend it.
- I am a fan of Kim's and I've often read Lara's articles in Self, M&F Hers, etc., so I was very happy to see this book come out. Kim's considerate and smart coaching style really came out in this book; the one thing I love about her is that she seems so kind for someone so beautiful. They both did a superb job on this book.
The recipies were my favorite part and they were very yummy (although some looked better in the book than in my kitchen). The excercises were good although my favorite parts were the nutritional information and motivation segments.
Definitely a must have for anyone trying to improve their diets and/or excercise programs.
- Very interesting information, she has a style of writing that you can understand and do not feel that your beneath a snakes belly. You understand what you need to change in order for you to become the person you want to be.
- Excellent book. Really gets to the meat of the human body in terms that everyone can understand. Brings us back to the body basics!
- I love this book! Kim offers fun and challenging circuit training exercise about 4-5X per week (including cardio 1 - 2X per week), that get progressively harder over the three - month program. Within about a couple weeks I was already seeing some serious muscle definition showing up in my shoulders and biceps, then abs and some nice firm glutes and quads. She tackles all areas of weight loss including psychological, nutritional and physical aspects. She encourages you to keep a journal and do her homework exercises to prepare you mentally. She speaks in a very supportive, non-judgemental tone and its almost like she's right there with you every step of the way.
The program is 3 months long, but you can use it for life by repeatedly doing the 3 month program. The other bonus is that you can do the circuit training in the comfort of your own home. All you need is a yoga/exercise mat, a stopwatch, and some light hand weights. Awesome for me because I easily find a reason not to go to the gym and I ususally end up paying my gym membership fees for nothing! But, with this I can do my circuit training infront of the TV...talk about multitasking!
She does provide an excellently balanced meal plan with some delicious, easy-to-prepare recipes. However, I have a problems with controlling my cravings and a bit of a food addiction/binge eating so diet is the hardest part for me. Kim has exceptional self-control in that area...she only eats a snack-size M&Ms when she is PMSing or having serious cravings. I don't have that willpower so I am using another book, The No Crave Diet, for that. I HIGHLY recommend The No Crave Diet book for anyone who has trouble with self-control and cravings for the diet part of Kim's book. I think the combination of these two books is the ticket for ending my life-long quest for a healthy weight and looking and feeling great.
Anyway, the bottom line is Kim's book is the best there is for quick and beautiful results right at home...besides having your own personal trainer!

5 comments about Diet for a Pain-Free Life: A Revolutionary Plan to Lose Weight, Stop Pain, Sleep Better and Feel Great in 21 Days, ADA...sound nutritional advice...do-able, delicious..a godsend to pain sufferers..
- I am about 35 pounds overweight and have struggled with joint pain for the past 5 years. I have tried everything since Celebrex was taken off the market and after being recommended this book by my sister, I can honestly say I finally found something that works! I have been on the diet for about 2 months and have lost 15 pounds already, which has done wonders for my pain- I don't have any! The recipes are also really good:)
- I have purchased many diet books in the past, but Diet For A Pain Free Life is the one that I choose to follow from here on. I have arthritis and fibromyalgia, and just happened to see this book on the shelf while looking for another book. The recipes are easy and very good. I lost 6 lbs the first week I followed this diet. It is nutritionally superior to any other plan I have seen, with good tips on stretching and exercise also
- As a healthcare professional, one of the best books on the subject. Very informative and it works. I have know this Drs patients for years and think very highly of his work. Brilliant man, who wrote a brilliant book!!!
- If everyone followed the advice in this book, we would all be much healthier and health care costs would decrease dramatically. The author outlines 4 keys to reducing pain and improving general health. The first, of course, is to lose weight -- even a small amount makes a difference. Other steps involve exercise, sleep and stress. The eating plan makes complete sense and can be followed easily, i.e., no hard-to-find foods and no elimination of complete food groups. It's basically an anti-inflammation diet plan which is recommended by many doctors (and many book writers.) I've been following the diet recommendations for a few weeks, mainly eliminating refined foods, and I've lost 1-2 pounds per week. This diet could be maintained for life in contrast to diets that are so restrictive that you can't wait to go OFF the diet - and return to former eating habits. I am thinking of buying this book for several friends and family members who would greatly benefit from this lifestyle.
- This isn't a revolutionary diet book. It could have been a lot better but it tries to pad the information to make it seem more important and to fill the book. My main complaint is that ALL DIET BOOKS SHOULD HAVE A SHOPPING LIST and this one doesn't. Otherwise you have to flip back and forth from the recipes to the menu plan to make a list. Besides that, this is just a "eat less fat and red meat and exercise" book.

5 comments about The Rice Diet Solution: The World-Famous Low-Sodium, Good-Carb, Detox Diet for Quick and Lasting Weight Loss.
- Maddening.
Take some great weight loss ideas, framed with good science. Add a dash of pop "detox" tripe. Go into a long lecture about gummy bears. Then toss in some intriguing but complicated recipes. You end up with The Rice Diet Solution: The World-Famous Low-Sodium, Good-Carb, Detox Diet for Quick and Lasting Weight Loss, by Kitty and Robert Rosati, a registered dietitian and a physician, respectively.
This is a low-sodium, low-fat diet plan, that includes less red meat, more fruits and vegetables, more complex carbs, exercise, maintenance follow-ups, and stress reducing exercises. The first week results in low calorie consumption, less than 1500 calories a day. Between exercise and this 1500 cal/day diet, you WILL lose weight, guaranteed.
Founder Walter Kemper found "...it was almost impossible for [his patients] not to lose weight following the diet [of rice and fruit]" (p. 9). BTW, this is the reason it is called the "Rice Diet" as opposed to the Duke Diet, the Kemper Diet, or the Rosati Diet. He also said, "It's not what's in the rice, it's what's not in the rice."
So how does the Rice Diet work? There are three steps:
1. Diet in the following manner:
a. 1 week of grains, fruits, and veggies. This is the detox period, with 1000-1200 calories/day.
b. keep the same diet, but add some non-fat dairy, and you get animal protein once a week.
c. Maintenance while you add more foods.
2. Be a mindful eater. Pay attention to what you put in your mouth, and how you cook.
3. Find supportive people or groups, and surround yourself with them.
I'm irritated by the discussion of "detoxing." They note, "The overall goal of Phase One is to cleanse and detox your body's system of excess water weight... excess sodium, [and] allergic-like symptoms from a range of potential offenders from our food supply (e.g., pesticides, fertilizers, antibiotic and growth hormone does animal products, and others" (p. 31). In addition, "How does the Rice Diet detox the body?... This is probably an impossible aspect to actually quantify or prove but many signs of detoxification occur" (p. 58). Let me repeat that, "This is probably an impossible aspect to actually quantify or prove..." Then why is this coming from a physician and a RD?
Still, except for this "pop-nutrition", everything makes sense. Eat less meat, more fruits and veggies, more whole grains, less sugar, low-fat, high fiber, and exercise.
The book has more. It includes recipes and product suggestions. Some of these product suggestions seem way too specific: Yogurt? "Stonyfield Farm is best" (p. 49). For bread, try "Galliee Splendor Bible Bread" (p. 44).
I did try a recipe last night. The Bouillabaisse recipe on page 250 caught my attention. I couldn't get my hands on any fresh fennel, and I thought 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of saffron was a bit much (have you seen the price of this spice?). I used fresh bay leaves instead of dried, I chopped the garlic cloves (the recipe didn't specify), and given that I didn't have 2 1/2 cups of "hot fish stock" on hand, I used an 8 oz bottle of clam juice and another 12 oz of water (this also dilutes the salt in the clam juice). I mixed and matched my seafood with what was available... a pound of size 31-40 shrimp, a pound of Alaska salmon, a half pound of tilapia, a can of packed crab (no salt), and 8 oz of fresh mushrooms.
It was delicious. I served it on hot rice, in honor of the Rice Diet. MIne served 6, not 10.
Most of the recipes seemed fairly complicated. They definitely are not fast food. They are also a bit pricey, not an impossible situation, but one to be aware of.
But the Bouillabaisse was so delicious!
So the Rice Diet didn't seem to have any fatal flaws. It had a few pop-nutrition issues, and I really didn't like the gummy bear story. You will lose weight if you eat 1500 calories a week. You have to find a way to maintain your healthy weight when you readjust your calories to 1800-2000 calories. You should always exercise.
Be well.
- When used correctly, this diet does work. It took a few weeks for it to really start working, but then it did. I can't say that I went hungry, and the fruit does satisfy my sweet tooth. I felt better for it also.
The problem, as with all diets, is that it is a way of life, not just there to lose the weight, and then go back to your old way of eating. Which is what I did the first time. I did eventually gain back the 20 lbs. I had lost, but I knew I was doing it, the same way I knew I was going to gain weight being on this damned computer. I let it happen.
Pardon me while I go browse the self-help section.........
- I am thoroughly enjoying my new Rice Diet Solutions book. This is a way of Life I can hold on to because not only will I be eating wholesome delicious nutritious food but it helps me physically, spiritually, and mentally as well. This book offers more assurance and details along with the cookbook. I would purchase both for more motivation and cooking tips.
- I had heard of this diet before and am now using it. I know about something of nutrition, but this book is excellent on explaining why we gain as well as maintain the weight we want to loose. The first week I lost 11 pounds, now ending my second and loosing 1/2 a pound a day - but I do stick to the program. I feel great and am looking to completeing my goal! There's nothing like preventative measures to enhance your health and life. Awesome find for anyone wanting to change the way they look and feel.
- This is an awesome lifestyle change that will help you see weightloss within 24 hours if you stick to it. I lost 22lbs the first month and between Dec. and May I lost a total of 52lbs. I had so much energy and I felt so great when I started this. I love this!

5 comments about Slim Forever - For Women: Subliminal Self Help.
- I think this cd has a lot of potential. However, they don't focus on getting the person into a hypnotic state enough. Therefore, I never really feel like I can use this to my full potential. Nicoli's weight loss system is much better.
- This is the most wonderful present I ever bought myself. I listen to it daily and it has transformed my life. I am buying one for my mother next. This is one purchase you won't regret.
- I was feeling encouraged by the other reviews and I only needed to lose about 10 pounds so I figured this would help me get rid of 10 pounds. I bought this tape to help me get through my restrictive diet and excercise but I was not expecting the tape to do the work for me. They recommend that you listen to both sides for at least several weeks and I was listening to both sides everyday for a year.
So how come I still love chocolate and when I cut out chocolate I baked cookies non-stop which is strange because the cookie baking was not even a habit I had until I started listening to these tapes. My point is that I suspect the tape does little or nothing because if it did anything you'd think after a year of listening to both sides I'd be over my chocolate addiction and now what is up with my new cookie baking and eating addiction? I was suppose to stop craving sweets but it made the cravings worse! Still I REALLY REALLY pushed myself to try to lose weight and it was not effortless at all--I did deprive myself and I knew I was depriving myself. I worked out everyday for at least 60 minutes and did not enjoy it. I really really wanted to lose weight for a trip that was coming up and the thought of going on the trip with 7-10 extra pounds is what really kept me motivated to stick it out, so it wasn't the tape.
Just trust me, like I said ...if the tape worked why do I still need chocolates and sweets?! The only reason I haven't gained weight from the chocolates and cookies is because I run almost everyday and that basically burns these calories off. Over the course of a year of listening to the tapes everyday I only lost a total of 5 pounds and dieting and excercise felt like torture so the tape did not make me less aware that I was dieting nor did it help with bad sweets addictions.
I suspect the problem is that many of the affirmations simply do not apply to me and they don't make sense. For example, she says "I'm active, attractive and in demand" And all I'm thinking is what does she mean "in demand"? She does a poor job of getting you into a hypnotic state and I think the main problem is the combo of it not getting me into hypnosis and then many of the things said seem to be affirmations for better self-esteem. She does try to get you to crave vegetables and fruit, but I always liked vegetables and fruits long before this tape, my problem is not so much that I don't already eat healthy... it is that too often I add extra calories in my diet because I always give into the chocolate/sweets cravings. One of the main problems is unfortunately she does not really make a point of getting you to stop craving the foods that added the extra pounds in the first place.
Anyways despite listening to both sides for an entire year I hardly noticed any changes or difference and after a year of repeated listening I think it's now safe to assume it did not work for me, but who knows maybe it will work for someone else. I will be trying a differnt tape now because I'd really love to kick my addiction for sweets.
- I have always strongly believed in this item - having first purchased a tape of it about twelve years ago. The tape eventually wore out and I was thrilled to bits to be able to purchase a cd of it. Already I'm feeling great again and it's only been a week now.
- To lose weight, I tried coconut oil, the Master Cleanse, green tea, and other natural methods. I do believe all the methods I tried work for other people, however they did not work for me. This disc started working for me in the first week. I listen to it every night when I go to bed. I always fall asleep to it, which is fine. Sometimes I would listen to it twice daily. I believe it works. I found myself actually wanting and enjoying healthier foods, specifically vegetables and fruit. I attributed this to the disc. The price is good, the woman's voice on the disc pleasant. Give it a try!

5 comments about Leaky Gut Syndrome.
- I purchased this book after finding out that I had leaky gut syndrome - the information provided is good, recommended treatments is the standard throughout the alternative world for this problem.
The down side is that no cases studies or persoanl experiences are available.
- This book is clear, and concise yet packed with important information. It's hard to find information specifically about this condition, and rather than scour the internet for questionable information, get this book. It's a quick read and worth every penny.
- I bought this book because I have digestive a disorder. I had heard of Leaky Gut Syndrome, but didn't understand what it was. Now I do.
- A tiny booklet packed with valuable information for anyone looking to improve their health. Who would have thought that a 'leaky gut' could affect so many body systems! Heal your gut...heal your body.
- There is not much info here. I should not have bought it. What can one expect from something that was only $3.95?

5 comments about The Secret To Low Carb Success!: How to Get the Most Out of Your Low Carbohydrate Diet.
- If you are a lo-carb convert and are looking for a way to make this way of eating a lifestyle, I highly recommend you read this book. It is particularly helpful in diagnosing stalls in weight loss, many of which are subtle but can pose a barrier to success. Before reading this book I had the big picture. Now I have the find points and can see that Lo-carb is not just about losing weight but gaining health.
- So many people have written such nice things about this book that I feel compelled to write a negative review. But I can't. This book was very useful. If you are thinking of starting a low carb diet but are not sure which one, start by reading this book. It compares the various diets in an unbiased, down-to-Earth way. For me, the most important part of this book was the chapter which discussed the various factors which can cause the low carb diet to suddenly stop working for no clear reason. Many of the causes of slowing weight loss are not obvious. This book will likely help you find the cause of your slowed weight loss and help you get back on track. And on top of that, the book is so cheap. You are hurting yourself if you don't add this book to your low carb arsenal.
- I have been low carbing for about 2 months and I was having mixed results before I read this book. The first chapter that compares all the different plans helped me select a plan that was much better for me than the one I was on originally. This book also helped me discover 2 important things that I was doing that slowed my weight loss. The combination of choosing another plan and tossing out my stallers, my weight loss sped up a great deal. Absolutely worth the $7.00 I paid for it.
- I've been "lowcarbing" since January 2006 and was given The New Diet Revolution by Atkins. I had success, however, I JUST found out that some medication I was placed on two months after starting LC was a culprit in not only stalling my weight, but gaining 6 pounds. My situation had no bearing on the Atkins plan as I still follow it.
I stumbled upon this book about 4 months ago in a drug store--way before reading any reviews. The writer is credible, the writing style is not over the top on medical terminology. Once you start reading it, it is hard to put down.
Ms. Richard states the facts concerning each plan.
Anyone who is even considering a low carb lifestyle (this is not a "diet") should really read this book BEFORE they start any plan. Although I started lowcarbing before knowing about this book, I believe it would help even a current lowcarber in the event that they may need to make adjustments with whatever method they are using.
The book is very inexpensive and worth much more than it's price. It is a very good, down-to-earth, factual, non-overwhelming read.
I highly recommend this book as your first choice, OR your first read if you own other books.
- I bought this book after I read the raving reviews. Now, after I read it I don't see what is so special about this one. Just a summary of the low carb stuff she found on internet blogs. You are way better off with something more constructive and original. In my opinion any of the Fran McCullough books beat this one 10 to one. Hope this information will help my fellow low carb dieters.
