  1. Not only did this book describe me & my behavior to a t, it also gave me specific steps to overcome my binging problem. I highly recommend this book if you have a binging problem.

  2. This book was interesting and I was very enlightened. I realized that I do have a binge eating disorder and all of the advice in the book was great. However, I found that it was hard to follow and to keep on top of. Very easy to revert back to prior binge eating ways. There is still hope:

My recommendation is The Hunger Within: A Twelve-Week Self-Guided Journey from Compulsive Eating to Recovery -- by Marilyn Migliore, Philip Ross See my review of this book...

  3. I have read several books on the subject, searching for a way to break free of this. The problem is that many books adopt one of two approaches: either one designed for bulimics, which I am not, or a view that food is an addiction and certain foods must be avoided for life.
This book takes a sensible and, most importantly, very doable approach - it doesn't ask you to monitor in written form, which can be quite a chore, but rather works on making you aware of your eating style and then overhauling it. Gradually, eating is normalized and the former binge foods are introduced - without leading to binges for me!! - so that your relationship with food slowly gravitates towards being "normal".
All in all, a great read, the one book that changed my life!

  4. This book alone will not solve your binge eating problem, so don't expect that. But it is a must-read for any person who feels uncontrollable when it comes to food. It definitely makes you wake up to realize what might be behind your binge-eating, as in the emotions behind it. It is an easy-read and you will do a lot of self-assessment. He truly gives you hope that you can get through this so you can focus on losing all the weight you want to. The key part is that he recognizes that normal diets don't work if you are a binge eater because they do not address bingeing. A+!

  5. i can not review because i have not received this book yet

5 comments about Different Bodies, Different Diets: Introducing the Revolutionary 25 Body Type System.
  1. It was fun looking through the book, reading descriptions and trying to find my body type. And it has a value in increasing one's body acceptance after looking at page after page of different body constitutions. I could not determine my "type" exactly, and got it narrowed down to three possibilities (that is after following all steps and reading psychological profiles). Next I look at the dietary recommendations, thinking that I could maybe blend them....but they were quite different and did not provide rationale for the promation of healthy vs. food to avoid.

I would find it hard to make some of the seemingly bizarre diet choices when the author offers no explanation for the "bionutrition" , either by research or by client experience. "Eat Right for Your Blood Type" is so much easier and understandable, plus the author attempts to explain/support his recommendations.

  2. i'm a western herbalist and student of chinese medicine. because of my background, i can surmise some of mein's basis for her conclusions, such as meridian pathways and their associated organs, endocrine hormonal influence, etc. i also think that she came up with the diets for each type via muscle-testing.
my primary interest in this book is as background material. as far as individualized diets, i recommend that people find what works for them, regardless of what they read in a book. mein's other pitfalls include not taking into account degenerative diseases, environmental stress, digestive disorders, etc. the biggest value in mein's suggestions is rotation of foods, as it is in most other diets-by-type.
we are all biochemically unique individuals and while typing ourselves may be fun, it's just one tool among many and not every tool is clinically useful in every situation.

  3. I am so grateful that Carolyn Mein's book came into my life. It did take a while for me to figure out what I was, but the search was well worth it and FUN. I really admire and respect what she has done. I am a person who is very focused on health. I have read EVERYTHING and know lots.If you eat the way she recommends, you will be healthy for life. My digestive system is now in the best condition it has ever been in. Thank you Carolyn Mein for all the hard work you did. For those who "understand" and have a real desire for optimum health........you're amazing.

  4. Very confusing book. Found it difficult to find my "type". None of the types matched me and the personality traits were not me at all if the body type remotely fit me. I couldnt decide what type i was at all. The menus were somewhat constrictive unless you can live on nuts and beans for some. Basically if you follow a healthy eating plan with excersize you will lose weight no matter what "type" you may be. WELL, duh.

  5. As with others I found this book difficult to follow and much prefer Dr. Abravanel's "Body Type Diet" in which one only deals with 4 distinct body types and a lot more guidance in the diet/exercise sections. However, having decided my body type through Abravanel, I found Mein's book to be great supplemental reading. And I am a firm believer that most of us are combinations of types - dominant and subdominant...............so that one needs to really get to know oneself to categorize and sort out what will work best.

  1. I purchased this book after embarking on Dr. Fuhrman's "Eat to Live" plan because I desperately needed to change my cooking style. This book is approximately 50% recipes and 50% lifestyle changes and the reasons for those changes. The principles of this plan are also very similar to the book above, and to "Stop the Inflammation Now" by Dr. Fleming. I have reviewed both of those books as well, if you are curious.

The gist of the plan is a vegan diet, adding exercise, eliminating stress and being grateful. Common sense ideas that the author tries to tie together by referencing studies and specific client examples.

The book is full on tidbits of information regarding the health benefits of specific foods as they appear in recipes. If you are well versed in nutrition this information is very basic. However, if you could use a nutrition primer this is a reasonable one.

My biggest criticism of the book is the recurrent emphasis on religion and God. I did not expect a religious tie in to a diet book.

Overall the book is full of information and recipes and serves the purpose that I purchased it for. I give it 5 stars for the recipe content alone. The remainder of the book I would give 4 stars. Since I purchased the book specifically for the recipes the overall rating is a 5.

  2. I am usually so excited to open the package of books I've found in my mail and immediately scan them. This one didn't excite me. I am just realizing how visually oriented I am. I opened this book and immediately put it in my give away pile. It's paperback with no interesting diagrams or pictures. Why now, at 53 years old, have picture books with slick, beautiful pages become so important to me? The information might be valuable, but the print did not entice me to read it at all. I got the feeling that it was very old and outdated. It's probably just the icky feeling of the paper. I love to underline and highlight my books, but don't like this kind of paper.

  1. I am diabetic and need a very good referance for carbohydrates and really hoped this would be it. However, on my very first look-up I was very disappointed. I was looking up broccoli so I could calculate my dinner carbs. When I finally found the page - difficult to do because there are no alphabet references at the top of the pages - I was given the choice of either raw broccoli or boiled broccoli...well hey there, how about steamed broccoli or roasted broccoli??? The only measurement references given were in cups (how do you measure a piece of broccoli in a measuring cup?)unless you were looking at a full stalk, boiled. Then it was defined as weighing 9.3 ounces and you could do a two or three step math calculation to figure out how many grams of carb there were in one ounce of boiled broccoli. Gosh darn it, vegetables can not be measured in measuring cups accurately. It all depends on the size of the pieces and do you smoosh them down or not and etc. The only accurate way to measure vegetables and most other foods we eat (except liquids) is by ounce or gram. Why don't the authors of these books realize that and just give us the ounce count?

My next look-up was eggplant (again I had trouble finding it because there are no alpha referances at the top of the pages)and I ran into exactly the same situation. Either I could get the count for raw eggplant (yuck!) or boiled eggplant and the quantities given were not accurtely measurable.

If returning this book didn't cost more than the book itself, I would return it in a snap. And I would never recommend this book to a friend.

  1. Do you want energy and better quality of life? read this book! No more starvation diets that set you up to fail, no more counting calories and more food than you ever thought possible. Did you know you can loose waight by eating at least 2000 calories????

  2. I read this book because someone was giving it away at work. I had heard about it but thought it might be some more diet advise. This woman is now one of the most respected people in my life. I applaude Susan Powter for her accomplishments and for speaking out to the public. Now people can really see what our trusted diet and fitness industries are really doing. Memorize the script, sell as much as you can the first visit, cause you can bet they won't be back. I too had a prince in my life at one time. Not so much the cheater but the food watcher. He watched everything I ate. A half of a hamburger was enough. Now that sweet revenge is in the open and those princes of the world can find another option. Thank you Susan for your honesty and commitment to getting the truth out.

  3. This book is about losing weight without counting calories or the amount of food you eat (yes, you read that right), it's about changing your life forever. Powter is honest, down-to-earth and easy to relate to. Anyone who has ever had a problematic relationship with food must read this book, it tells you exactly how to change the way you look and how to feel great. Basically, this book helps you lose weight and get fit because it is the Truth (finally!). Believe me, it really works.

  1. Demetre rehashes many things we've already heard before about how to win the weight wars. She spiritualizes everything, though. The book is kind of cliched and I was dismayed at the inclusion of her husband's infidelity in a book about weight loss. I couldn't see the point in divulging that in a book like this. That was a turn-off. At least we got to hear how gracious and forgiving she was to him. Self-serving with no new insights.

  2. I highly recommend this book. Danna explains the connection between body, soul, and spirit. The key to being successful is changing the way we think. Fantastic book!

  3. Danna's insights are refreshing. She truly seems to understand women's battle with weight in a society that glorifies unhealthy, stick-thin models. What she teaches is TRUTH about how we can lose weight permanently through healthy lifestyle change -- not expensive pills or weird diets. It worked for me and I don't think I'll ever be fat again!

I especially appreciate Danna's transparency about her personal struggles, including marital infidelity. What a great example of helping women see who we are and where we find our identity. So often, we find it in a man, a job, our stuff, our looks or our weight. Because she was secure in her identity in Christ, it didn't change who she was when her husband was unfaithful or even if her weight was over the top. I think a lot of women can benefit from this healthy way of dealing with this all too common heartbreaking issue. While marriages don't always survive, she shows it is possible. She brings hope and I commend her vulnerability. Her teaching is practical and biblical and a fun read. She's right on! GET THIS BOOK!!

  4. This book is great. A fresh perspective on BALANCE in these important dimensions of life. The author's insights into improving our health in all aspects of our lives are tangibly helpful, with immediate and "doable" tips in implementing her suggestions. Her personal stories humanize her, bring credibility to her teaching, and offer hope to those who might struggle in similar areas. I disagree with the critic who said she spiritualizes too much... I wish she had more! For us NOT to see the challenging areas of our lives with anything BUT spiritual eyes is folly. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is seeking to be healthier physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

  5. Yes! Help is on the way with Mrs Demetre. She outlines how to pull yourself out of the weight craze and sets you on the path to health and vitality. She is easy to listen to, very intelligent and has great insight. This is not only the first day of the rest of you life but the last book and get on with your life.
