4 comments about The Joy of Eating Right!: Spiritual and Nutritional Principles for Weight Control (A Bible Study for Women).
  1. My women's Bible Study group is currently using this book and really likes it. We are a group of 12-15 women who love to obsess about food once a week. Dee's easy-to-use Bible study is divided into daily portions that are clear and thought-provoking. We also enjoyed her book in the same series about Hospitality.

  2. This book is truly inspiring and can help you in many other areas you may struggle with. The principals are simple and brilliant! It is not a diet it's a DO-IT!

  3. I Love This Book!! I love it so much that I have purchased 6 copies, 5 of which I've given to others that I know stuggle with weight issues. I am on this site today to purchase several more. This book helps by showing where to focus. So many times we agonize over the symptoms or results of our issues, but never face & address the issues themselves. This book will guide you through a journey to not only face issues, but to make empowering decisions to overcome them. The book is based on sound Christian, Biblical principles. If used sincerely and prayfully this book can help you to not only transform how you look, but also transform your life.

  4. I did not enjoy this book - it is very "Fundamentalist", which is fine if you are a Christain Fundamentalist - however, if you are not, then it's probably not the book for you!

1 comments about Meditating to Attain a Healthy Body Weight.
  1. Although I've only recently read this book, I've used some of these same meditation techniques in the past in order to drop a few pounds, and they work. You should keep in mind that this is not a typical diet book, and the exercises that LeShan presents are not necessarily easy. His approach is designed to get inside the inner workings of your mind, to face your demons. The idea is that learning to control your mind leads to better control of your body and your habits. In this age of fad diets, LeShan's book is a practical approach for anyone who wants to shed some weight and live a heathier life.

The book's final chapter, "The Meaning of Wholistic Health," is especially engaging. LeShan presents an enlightening and informative discussion of "the medicalization of American society," where "the hospital is displacing the church or the parliament as the archetypical institution of Western society." His points are too numerous to summarize here, but his overall intention is to make us more aware of our own healing capacities and less dependent on the so-called experts.

4 comments about The Fit for Life Solution.
  1. The Fit For Life Solution: How To Identify And Successfully Eradicate The Causes Of Pain, Fatigue And Disease -- Now! is a superbly presented guide to a wealth of natural remedies and information on balancing one's diet so as to improve health and well-being. Individual chapters address a range of pertinent issues including the importance of a nutritious diet and faithful exercise regimen, evading life-threatening conditions (including cancer), as well as offering a "participant friendly" program called CARE that involves simple health principles to improve one's look and feel. The Fit For Life Solution is a solid, informationally packed and recommended guide to self-betterment.

  2. If you are at all interested in learning how to have complete and total control of your own health and how to confidently and easily live a sickness, pain and disease free life this book is definitely for you. In a climate of ever increasing statistics of disease and ill-health the clear and simple ideas of this book are nothing short of a Godsend. Since the medical profession, the single biggest industry in this country, makes the enormous amount of money that it does by the population being and remaining sick and full of disease they would have us believe that living a healthy disease free life is totally beyond our control. Well, thanks to the brilliant, yet extremely simple methods put forth by this author, the reader is able to take his/her health back into their own hands and truly live without sickness pain or worry of most, if not all diseases. The information in this book is as simple and easy to understand as it is groundbreaking. This book could and should change the world and the way people view cancer, sickness, pain and other diseases. The author explains in remarkably common sense and simple terms exactly how to take total control of your health, vitality and weight by using your body's lymph system (which the author explains is the body's garbage collector). He clearly points out that like a car, our body is a machine, a complex living machine and that after a while due to residue of foods we eat, toxins, chemicals and pollutants in foods, spent cellular material, and other wastes our bodies become "silted up" and require an "oil change" so to speak just like our cars do, otherwise sickness plagues us and disease begins to form. Not only is the information in the book groundbreaking and life changing, but the author, Harvey Diamond, who is known for his humorous and entertaining writing style, delights and entertains the reader with a book that I could not put down until I found myself finishing the last page. I recommend this book to absolutely everyone who can read and who desires to be healthy, energetic and disease free and truly feel this book could turn around the entire cancer and disease epidemic in this country and put the power of your own health back into people's own hands where it belongs! Not reading this book is just like turning your back on a pile of gold the size of a mountain. Thank you Harvey Diamond!

  3. This is a great book with Harvey at times unleashing his full venom at the medical profession, food industry and fellow dieticians. He is speaking up for the truth and I happen to believe him. Why? Because I have tested and followed the Fit for Life principles myself and they work.

However before reading this book (which I call Fit for Life III), I would advise buying and following the principles laid out in the first two books i.e. Fit for Life and Fit for Life II. They are easier to read, gentler (probably because they were written in partnership with Marilyn!) and cover the essential dietary/lifestyle principles you need to follow.

This book contains exactly the same text word for word as Fit for Life: A New Beginning (apart from the cover is different and the book is physically bigger), so if you want to save yourself some money I would buy that one instead. I would have rated the book 5 stars, if it was not for this point.

  4. this is a really good book. his original fit for life book also has some very good info in it, the diet regimen part of it less so in my opinion. but here he puts it all together, and focuses primarily on the link between diet and disease, using cancer as his main example. it has the feel of a great debunking text, as in, here is the fundamental and unassailable link between diet and health, the food we eat and the illness and disease that follow -- a basic truth that the AMA, FDA and pharmaceutical companies prefer you not see, as they pour billions of dollars of dollars into ads and countless propaganda. and then he shows, like john robbins' diet for a new america, that the paradigm of destruction of the S.A.D. (sad or standard american diet) extends not only to our health but also to pollution and ecological damage on a grand scale. the type of book you should read and then send copies to your friends. cheers, jg

5 comments about Move to Lose.
  1. I loved this book! After reading it I felt motivated to go do something about those 20 extra pounds I am carrying around. It is filled with great ideas for getting moving and for the first time ever I think I am going to try a new exercise like pilates. I liked the charts and pictures that were included. Overall I would highly recommend it--especially if you are like me and have been lacking motivation to get started on a healthier path.

  2. Chris Freytag has taken all of the complicated fitness and diet programs out there and traded them in for some common sense! She spells out things that ANYONE can do to improve their health and fitness and does it in a way that is not intimidating or too complex. Her exercise and diet ideas are so helpful (and not hard to do). This book taught me a lot about healthy eating habits and how your body responds to exercising. I highly recommend it!

  3. Move to Lose is well written, organized and includes all the necessary components to getting and staying fit and healthy. The program is such a common sense approach to eating, exercising and living well that it is easy to understand and implement. I purchased this book after dealing with a medical crisis. This book motivated me to eat healthier, exercise daily and create a plan to reach my fitness goals. I have lost weight, become more tone, have more energy, confidence and strength. I highly recommend this book!!!!

  4. I highly recommend this book, especially if you have previously purchased the Video Tape or DVD. Excellent instructions and illustrations so you can practice them slowly on your own in the beginning, without having to keep up with video. Lots of other excellent information regarding nutrition, etc. Great Book alone or to compliment the Author's video.
    JMW - Orlando

  5. Chris Freytag knows her stuff. I have many of her workouts on dvd and so knowing how good of an instructor she is, I knew she'd have good stuff to say in her book. She does. She is well educated in health and she is certified by the American Council on Exercise. While she doesn't really add anything new to what we all already know, she does add insight to what she sees with her clients. She talks about their motivation or lack thereof and how to deal with all of that. Then she goes on to talk about ditching myths, excuses, building better body images, and then goes into the nitty gritty about diet and exercise.
It is a good read. It's choc full of information and hopefully enough motivation for people as they struggle with doing workouts and eating right.

  1. Absolutely love the book. "Your Designer Diet" is filled with original ideas, leading edge research results and humor!

Todd is frank about his personal experience. He truly practices what he believes in.

"Joyful eating" is my favorite in the book. If you are interested in
genuinely enjoy food ( and LIFE), jump to "Joyful eating" in chapter 14.

    And do you know ?

    1. Obesity can be caused by a virus?
    2. How to weight proof your environment?
    3. How to become a designer of your own diet?

    Enjoy the book.

  2. The problem with the conventional wisdom regarding losing weight is that if you exercise more and eat less you can reduce your weight -- and maintain the weight level that you want. The problem is that for most of us, conventional wisdom isn't all that wise! Todd Hoff lost more than 100 pounds and in the process discovered why losing weight is so difficult, why being overweight isn't a matter of 'fault', the science behind weight loss (and gain), and how to permanently control weight through creating the perfect and personalized diet for ourselves within the context of our lifestyles. Basically what Hoff has done in "Your Designer Diet: How To Stay On Any Diet For The Rest Of Your Life" is to lay out a program that we can customize to our own life circumstances, our own personal strengths, and which is compatible with our own schedules -- be they hectic or leisurely. Hoff's basic message\ is that we can be in control of our weight, we can learn how to stay on any diet, how to avoid threats to our dieting success, diverse and effective strategies for losing weight, and maintaining our weight loss through simple daily monitoring. Of special note is what "Your Designer Diet" has to say about 'Joyful Eating'. Invaluable, informed and informative, and thoroughly 'user-friendly', "Your Designer Diet" is an enthusiastically recommended reading for anyone having to deal with problems of excessive weight.

  3. I enjoyed reading this book tremendously. It was such an eye opener, and more importantly, brought awareness to my day-to-day activities. This is not a typical diet book! The reader can make informed, smart lifestyle decisions through understanding and from Todd's suggestions. Not only was it informative and entertaining to read, it was motivating!

5 comments about The Pritikin Principle: The Calorie Density Solution.
  1. I enjoyed the original Pritikin Principle book published in 1973 so I was looking for an updated version. This is NOT it.

The author (the son of the original Pritikin author) seems to be fluffing up the book by repeating many concepts several times without adding any new information. The book stresses calories and doesn't give much space to other important dietary considerations such as sodium and caffeine.

Another problem is that the author never explains how to calculate the calorie density of food. It does list calorie densities of many foods, but it omits many, many more.

If you must read this book, buy it used. Better yet, buy the original 1973 book if you can find it.

  2. This is quite simply the most important diet book ever written. Pritikin's "Calorie Density" theory is the true explanation of weight gain and loss. Other diets succeed or fail depending on whether they are low calorie density, which is why Atkins had to come up with such complicated good carb, bad carb logic on his maintenance diets.

The theory is rather simple: people tend to eat the same amount of food every day (3 pounds). What determines whether they gain or lose weight is the number of calories in that three pounds of food. Those who eat high calorie foods gain weight. Those who eat low calorie foods lose weight.

What makes a food high calorie? Forget everything you've ever heard because the truth is surprising. The more water in the food, the lower calorie it will be. That's because there are no calories in water (0 calories / gram). Fiber is the next best thing at 0 or 1 calorie per gram. The more fiber the better. Protein and carbohydrates are in the middle. They have 4 calories per gram. The real problem is fat, which has 9 calories per gram, twice as much as carbohydrates and protein. Fat is the biggest enemy of the dieter because it is so loaded with calories.

Pritkin's method is very simple. Weigh the food you eat and count the number of calories. As long as calories per pound is less than 400 you will lose weight. Calories per pound between 400 and 600 leads to weight maintenance. More than 600 calories per pound causes weight gain. (The only trick is that for liquids count just the calories, not the weight. Which means avoid liquids which have more than a few calories.)

Nothing else matters, according to Pritikin. The glycemic index is worthless, and weight gain has nothing to do with insulin rushes or food intolerances. There is no need to count carbs, fats, or eat small portions. Ultimately weight gain is caused by eating more calories than we burn, and that is determined by whether we eat high-calorie foods or not.

Fruits and vegetables are the stars of a low calorie diet. Their calorie density is very low so they can be eaten in unlimited quantities, along with the delicious complex carb foods like pasta and potatoes which make up the rest of the diet.

The result is a low fat, high carb diet, which as Pritikin documents, has been shown in 25 years of scientific studies to cure diabetes, allow people to lose weight and keep it off, go off blood pressure medicines, and avoid bypass surgery.

In case someone cares about my credentials, I have no financial ties to Pritikin. I have however followed their diets for 21 years with excellent results. I am 70 pounds lighter now, going from an obese 32 BMI to a slim BMI 20 and body fat under 10%. My cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose levels & tolerance are all superb, and in spite of 21 years on a high-carb diet I show absolutely none of the bad side effects like insulin resistance which the high-fat diet authors claim I should have.

I am in my 40's, at my dream weight, and finished a marathon last year. Anyone who wants to join me can. Being fat is optional. If someone doesn't want to buy Pritikin, Barbara Roll's "Volumetrics" book has the same kind of diet.

  3. Nathan Pritikin's Leukemia was caused by the radiation treatments he received as a child. (I think that his doctors irradiated his thyroid.) The radiation levels used back in those days were thought to be safe, because the harmful effects didn't show up until decades later. We now know differently.

In the late 1950s, Nathan Pritikin was diagnosed with heart disease. Soon after, he adopted a low-fat, high-fiber diet and began a moderate exercise program. Subsequent medical examinations revealed dramatic improvements in his health.

The autopsy done after he died showed that his arteries were *clean*. This was the final proof that the diet and exercise program he urged others to follow had worked for him, too!

I have no connection with Nathan Pritikin's family or the Pritikin Longevity Center. I've read several books written by Nathan Pritikin or his son, Robert Pritikin, and I'm trying to adhere to the diet and exercise program they recommend. It takes discipline, but the results are worth it!

  4. This is exactly the advice given by the modern advocates of a healthy diet including Dr. John McDougall and Dr. Fuhrman. In order to be healthy we must eat whole grains, fruit, and vegetables which are all less calorie dense than fat laden foods (meats, fats, and refined "factory" foods).

Nathan Pritikin died at age 69 not because of his diet. He suffered an early death from cancer due to a medical fool who had MD as his title (not much has changed over the years). He was given damaging amounts of radiation decades before he died in order to try to cure a minor medical problem. This was years before Pritikin discovered the link between diet and health. (The fools in the medical industry and the government "healthless" agencies mocked him for his discovery.)

  5. Robert Pritikin has made terrific contributions to our ability to control our own health destiny. This same program helps us lose weight, control heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and reduce cancer risk.

3 comments about Diets Still Don't Work.
  1. I first read this book about six years ago when I gained 25 pounds as a college freshman. I realized then that I was eating compulsively and lost 10 pounds almost immediately when I focused on the principles in the book. I just picked it up again when I found myself eating without thinking and gaining weight again, and it was so easy to get back to a healthy way of thinking and eating. This book makes so much sense and works because you're not depriving yourself, and you look at food in a whole new light. I really recommend it to anyone with weight or eating issues. It has done so much for me.

  2. In this book "Diets Still Don't Work" Bob Schwartz, PHD
teaches you why diets dont work, what the diet mentality is, why you
may not be able to keep weight off and more. You complete a number of
written exercises. These are designed to help you realize the reasons
you have excess weight and your attitudes towards eating. As you
progress through the book you learn the habits of naturally slim
people and how you can mimic these behaviors so they become second
nature and you too will be naturally slim! By the end of the book you
have a list of goals to accomplish other than focusing on weight, know
how to naturally lose weight and keep it off and decide if you are
ready to make the commitment. This book published in 1990 is the
sequel to Bob's original book "Diets Don't Work". Bob has
since updated and revised the "Diet's Don't Work" book
(published 1996). Both books cover essentially the same information
with only slight variation. I recommend reading one or the other to
help you get off the diet roller coaster!

  3. My doctor recommended this book in a vain hope of getting me to change my eating habits. Not a good investment. It takes 5 chapters to get to the central idea which is - only eat when you are hungry. The rest of the book simply restates this bit of wisdom in different ways over and over again. So here is my recommendation - "Don't eat when you are not hungry". There I saved you 10 dollars!!!

  1. Carole Carson took our already wonderful community and made it even more wonderful! She has struggled with issues many of us have had throughout our lives. Her book has humor, helpful suggestions, and examples of people challenging themselves. Not to mention a map on how to loose weight and stay fit.
A must read for people interested in being fit.

    Susan Michalski

  2. This book offers a lot of information for any reader who has struggled with their weight. Its filled with great ideas, and a whole host of professionals to give you motivation to loose weight the right way, the healthy way. Carol Carson's story of her transformation is one we all should read and use it for motivation to get fit and stay fit.

  3. I actually met Carole Carson and THEN read her book. Believe me, seeing the "after" first had a great impact on me. I never could have imagined the "before" Carole. She went from a pleasantly round grandmotherly type to a toned, energetic, athletic and strikingly attractive woman who looks like she could take on the world! Oh, did I mention that I met her on a tennis court in the Hawaiian Islands? My group was so impressed with her play, confidence and effervesence. Imagine my surprise when I read her book. After only a few chapters, I decided, "I want that!" Her ideas are easy to implement and I love hearing, "Are you thinner--you look great!" Better yet, I have new-found energy and confidence. Her story can be your story. You'll laugh out loud as you read how an entire town jumps on board as Carole motivates them to healthy living.

  4. This is the way weight loss should be approached - by a real person with real emotions. Carole is so honest that you can't help but laugh in recognition of your own foibles. But she found a path to fitness and the rest of us can do it too. Better yet, our whole communities can become supports for health. Highly recommend!!!!!!

  5. I tried every way shape and form to lose weight. I thought I'd give it a try.
