  1. I was really excited to buy this book because I had heard so much about it from friends and needless to say, I'm so glad I brought it for myself. It's very interesting and so so true. Now I know why I get certain reactions when I eat food that aren't right for my blood type. This book is a must have in my opinion.

  2. Originally I heard about this book from my boyfriend's mother, who is a cancer survivor. I had tried numerous diets over the years, including Atkins, Weight Watchers, Fit for Life, NutriSystem and so on. The diets would usually work and I would lose weight (mind you, I am not even obese, just wanted to shed some excess weight). However, like most people I was tired of diets and fads that made me lose weight, just so I could gain it right back after eating "normal" again. I was much more curious about finding a permanent way of eating that would be beneficial to my health, and of course my waist line. I wanted to find a lifestyle change I could stick to.

Being the naturally curious person that I am I figured I give this book and the "diet" a try. This was about 2 weeks ago.
Originally some of the concepts or avoids were hard for me to fathom. I am NOT the typical type 0 but a B+ and also should not eat anything that contains wheat. Up to then wheat was the main part of my diet!

The more I read the more I realized that a lot of the beneficial or neutral foods are the things I actually like and love already (thank god I can have all the dairy in the world). At first I could not even fathom not eating wheat products. I also cannot have chicken, which I really liked and I am supposed to eat venison, rabbit, lamb and goat/goat cheese, which I really hate. Luckily turkey and beef are neutral and salmon is beneficial, which makes the meat section easier for me.

The findings so far have been astounding though. I have lost 6 lbs, my energy is higher than it has been in years, so are my moods! I feel "happy" and I am not constantly tired. I also don't have issues with indigestion like diarrhea, gas, and heartburn, which I have battled for over 20 years. Also, I do eat a lot, I just don't eat the stuff I am not supposed to eat and I am still dropping weight.

Of course, a lot of the findings here are common sense. We should all avoid fructose corn syrup, processed foods and junk food but there is something to be said about how I feel on this diet. I am honestly considering staying on this plan until I die and I am only 38 years old.

I am not concerned about lack of research. If I do something and it makes me feel great and seems to be beneficial on all levels, why would I need some scientist to validate it? I am also quite amazed at the overwhelming amount of 5 star reviews here! If this would be quackery, I would think the majority of people rating this book would have already discovered so.

  3. This book attracted my attention as it focused on blood types. I've been following the recommendations for the past six years and it has helped address many of my issues without having to goto a doctor.

I have also recommended this regimen to my husband and sons which they in turn have seen good results.

More over this book now acts as a reference and I consult it many times each week.

And that is why I have also recommended this book to many of my friends and relatives.

  4. Let me first say that you need to read the whole book first. I know a lot of people that are excited to start and they are really dont read all the book. This is the only way that you are going to really the results that your body needs and want. I believe that is why a lot of people call the book a crock. Also please buy the companion book because it is great to take to the grocery store.

A friend of mine that has cancer daughter bought her this book. I am so fortunate that I picked up the book off her coffee table and flip through the pages. The best thing that has ever happen to me and my husband. It meant for us cleaning out our food pantry. I am a O and husband is a B blood type. If you do this change you need to have your family on board. Especially if their is different blood types in your home.
It is expensive at first, because you will have to give away or gradually stop using your avoid foods. We gave away a lot of stuff. My family started right away. I stopped coffee right away which if you know me I was a Starbucks addict. I still have a balance on my card which I will use for soymilk. I had already stop using splenda, boy after I stop their stock will go down(smile)
We are going in our third week and now that we have all our food in the pantry.
What I really like is I am never hungry. Before I started this blood type diet and I dont want to say diet because it is just a change of the way of eating. There is so much food to eat and I promise you will never be hungry. Before I started this process I felt 75% of myself. I am 50+ and now I can say I am 100% of energy in these short weeks. I have lost weight and I am going to start by exercising in a couple of days.

Buy and Read this book, I wish I would have known about this a long time a go.

  5. You really do not need the larger book if you just want to try the diet.
The smaller ones for each individual blood type gives you all you need to know about what to eat and not to eat. However, the larger book does trace the diet and how it was accomplished. Found it interesting. Am going to give it a try!!

5 comments about You: On A Diet: The Owner's Manual for Waist Management.
  1. I am still working through the volume of information contained in this book. And, no, I am not skipping ahead to the chapter with their actual diet in it just yet! As someone who has struggled with my weight off and on (more on than off), I know I need to learn the why I am fat, not just the how to be thin, and I think I found the book which will truly educate me. The text is written in everyday language that you and I speak to each other, not medical high brow stuff. From the tone, I know I would also enjoy this book on tape! My only criticism, which may or may not be fair as I see the merit in it, is that some of the pages are overwhelming with "tips" in one corner, and a cartoon in the other, and the actual text from the page before somewhere in the middle. Sometimes this busy-ness gets in the way of the awesome information contained in all these sections -- if that makes any sense.

Anyway, I strongly recommend this book. I also strongly recommend catching the doctors on the Discovery Health channel when they are on. I love their down to earth approach to health. I would love to have them clean out my refrigerator and scare the fat off me with their outside the box tactics. They are just wonderful! More Manuals please!

  2. Excellent book, highly recommended for everybody who needs to understand how the body works and to start a healthy nutrition. Very good indeed.

  3. You: On A Diet doesn't just lay out a diet plan, but addresses what goes on when we eat and the various chemicals in our bodies that effect our behaviors and body shape.

Part 1 is a sort of introduction to your body.

Part 2 is about appetite, your digestive system, inflammation, body fat, metabolism, and exercise. If you have ever wondered how food acts in your body and how food can effect how you feel and whether you store fat or burn it, this is the section for you.

Part 3 focuses on how your mind effects your diet - emotions and psychology.

Part 4 outlines the actual You diet and exercise plan and has a whole chapter about staying on plan by making "YOU-Turns" whenever you fall off the plan (and who sticks 100% to any diet 100% of the time?).

The appendices cover medical intervention - drugs that cane help you lose weight, plastic surgery for saggy skin, and various bariatric procedures (stomach stapling, etc.).

Throughout the book are little cartoons that illustrate the points made in the text. I found these helpful even though I am not a visual person.

My main criticism is that they trot out the same old low-fat advice that hasn't helped America yet, and that they promote unhealthy vegetable oils. Neither do I believe that saturated fat is the enemy, though Mehmet and Oz do.

This book is a good start, but I urge people to go beyond this and read more about vegetable oils and saturated fat and see if Mehmet and Oz are right in their views or not. Personally, the only oils I allow in my house are olive and coconut. Yes, coconut oil is a saturated fat.

  4. Outstanding You: Discover, Design and Achieve Ultimate Fitness

Perhaps the most important aspect of fitness is understanding your own body. This book provides another perspective on dieting. For that reason, I recommend at least reading it for the different viewpoint you may pick up. I rated it high because I find the more information, the better. Even if you decide not to use some, most or all of the information in the book, it's good to have that information anyway. The fitness field is largely unregulated - and diets are constantly going and coming. Only you can know what's best for you - and the only real way to do that is to learn as much as you can.

  5. I am a registered nurse and this is by far the best book on the topic of waist managementthat i've read so far. Really wonderful ilustrations too. I would recommend it to any serious and diet conscious individual.
    E.P.

  1. The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health
This book has life-changing information. But don't let the fact that it is a description of many studies be a deterrent to reading it: the book is written in an extraordinarily readable style.

  2. well written, absolutely excellent research and convincing arguments backed with study after study. Everyone should read this book, regardless of present health condition. However if one is suffering from any of the major diseases or ailments prevalent in this society, this book should be mandatory!!

  3. This book has two themes: Food choices can create a healthier body, and there's a bunch of folks that have vested interest in keeping us from knowing this truth.

It is evident that man has survived by being a scavenger, but this study suggests that some diets are better at promoting a healthy body beyond mere survival. If you need more verification of the health benefits of a plant-based diet beyond this study, look at the world-class athletes that are vegetarian. How do you suppose they build muscle, bone, excellent health, and win at their sport?

While the study helped verify what many have proven by using their own bodies as laboratory, the inside information about the food/drug cartels and their government enablers is an important bonus. We are never going to have good health in this country as long as these folks reign supreme with their vested interest of promoting their view of health information, and healthcare is seen as a commodity.

The book exposes the dumbing down of our people with the misinformation of the powerful that undermines the quality of our health and lives.

  4. Dr. Campbell has brilliantly brought the higher world of nutrition and biology into a most readable format, presenting the most astounding findings. Good nutrition as the foundation for health is now without question, but treating cancer with nutritional therapies?? Let's see where we can go from here!

  5. THE CHINA STUDY IS JUST SO OUTSTANDING! IT WILL ABSOLUTLEY CHANGE YOUR LIFE! YOU MAY REMEMBER THE MOVIE IN WHICH INDIANA JONES HAD TO CHOOSE, FROM MANY CUPS, THE ONE THAT WAS THE TRUE "HOLY GRAIL". OF COURSE, HE CHOSE WISELY. AS YOU STAND IN YOUR LOCAL BOOK STORE OR LIBRARY TRYING TO CHOOSE FROM HUNDREDS OF BOOKS OFFERING HEALTH AND DIET INFORMATIOM, YOU ALSO WILL HAVE CHOSEN WISELY IF YOU PICK "THE CHINA STUDY". I WOULD ALSO HIGHLY RECOMMEND "THE FOOD REVOLUTION" BY JOHN ROBBINS. YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO SET THESE BOOKS DOWN!

  1. I found this book to be very informative (and commically written). I have the greatest respect for Dr.'s Rozen and Oz.

  2. Lots of interestingly written information to help one stay or become healthy and live longer and better.

  3. I have merely read random chapters /pages off the Manual and I am already totally convinced it is a wonderful buy that I have made. The style of presentation is easy-going even when it is dealing with serious subjects and that is good for a Manual one wants to read in a relaxed mode.

  4. "How Well Do You Know Your Body?" begins this enlightening 544-page book. It continues with how blood is pumped throughout your body, how your brain works, how your body moves, how you breathe, how food is digested, how your immune system works, and how sexual and sensory organs work. This updated edition of the book includes the quiz along with a new chapter on the liver and pancreas, which describes the function and purpose of each. The authors also debunk popular myths about the body.

    The contents include:
    Preface
Chapter 1: Your Body, Your Home: Super Health
Chapter 2: The Beat Goes On: Your Heart and Arteries
Chapter 3: Do You Mind: Your Brain and Nervous System
Chapter 4: Motion Control: Your Bones, Joints, and Muscles
Chapter 5: To a Lung and Healthy Life: Your Lungs
Chapter 6: Gut Feelings: Your Digestive System
Chapter 7: In Your Trunk: Your Liver and Pancreas
Chapter 8: Sex Marks the Spot: Your Sexual Organs
Chapter 9: Common Sense: Your Sensory Organs
Chapter 10: Sick Sense: Your Immune System
Chapter 11: This Gland is Your Gland: Your Hormones
    Chapter 12: Hell Cells: Cancer
Chapter 13: The Owner's Manual Diet
Chapter 14: The Owner's Manual Workout
    Chapter 15: FAQs
    Index

This book is both instructive and entertaining. It includes a large (70-page) chapter on diet, which has over 30 recipes. The diet really emphasizes keeping your body healthy and young. The book also has a 24-page chapter, "Owner's Manual Workout", which provides easy-to-do exercises. This is a great book that makes understanding the human body accessible to those without a degree in physiology. I also recommend THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams and The 2007 Second Expert Report, Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective..

  5. You learn so much from this book its a must read get it for anyone you know. It has alot of things in here you should know about. Higly recommended!!

5 comments about Eat This Not That! for Kids!: Be the Leanest, Fittest Family on the Block!.
  1. This book is amazing. I thought I knew something about nutrition, but this takes it to a whole new, shocking level. The best part, the pictures make it easy for my 5 year old son to understand what's healthy, what's not. A cereal that he loves is on the "NOT" page-- he refused to eat it. I felt guilty for even offering (I swear, I didn't know.... the sugar looked okay compared to the others... there was fiber... ).

Loved it, loved it, loved it. They should give it out at the hospitals before handing you the baby!

The only down side-- you will feel horribly guilty for a few days.

  2. I received this book as a gift from someone who knew how much I liked the first one - and this one is even better! It's bright and clear and easy to understand, and gives great suggestions for making healthier options appealing to kids. My little one isn't quite on solid food yet, but I can't wait to use all this info with her as she grows up!!

  3. This book is terrific like the adult version. It is a great help for kids to look for themselves at how to make wiser choices without just hearing from their parents. Also, many people are on the run and don't take the time to read labels, so this is helpful to carry with you to make wiser choices. Carry it in the car so your child can choose before you order fast food or restaurant food. Kids love to make their own choices and they feel good about themselves when you trust them to make a wise choice. The price is right for something that can help cut calories with small incremental changes.

  4. This book describes an amazing way of thinking about weight control for your kids. Not necessarily by giving up eating out, but learning to make better food choices both at home and at restaurants. The author's point out that making smart food choices is all about having the knowledge. This book can help you to help your children make better choices.

This book definitely gives you the inside look at the nutritional value of foods in your child's favorite eating joints as well as advice on what to choose when they are facing a variety of options.

I plan on keeping this copy handy for both my shopping trips and at restaurants. It is a great reference. And it's not just for kids...this book helps me as well!

  5. Just a great little book with lots of pictures to show you the best strategies to use when feeding your kids. In an age where childhood obesity and diabetes is rampant, this is a good book to read.

5 comments about Skinny Bitch.
  1. This book contains alot of good information about the products we consume on a daily basis. I seem to be the only person who thinks the tone in which it was written was just dumb. I didn't find the writers to be 'just telling it like it is'. I thought they were trying too hard. Just kind of silly and inappropriate, and I'm no prude. I know it was all for shock value, but I still found all the profanity, for a self help book, to be really odd. But the information they provided was good and I catch myself reading labels more and really paying attention to what goes into my body. I will say they had proof to back up claims and probably did a years worth or more of research. Very important information delivered in an oddball way.

  2. This book is amazing - funny, educational, realistic. This book changed my life, because it actually pushed me over the edge to become a vegetarian.

Bottom line: good read, interesting, and humorous.

  3. the title is a misnomer. buyers could pick up the book thinking they'll be getting a round of lifestyle and nutrition tips. instead they get two women expressing their very strong views about the state of the american food industry. and while their facts are valid, there are bits and pieces that they don't identify as the minuses to being vegan... and there are more than a few.

  4. Everyone needs to calm down. They're writing style is not for everyone but happens to be one of my favorite things about the book. I like straight forward sassy women. I think it's great. But I also take it with a grain of salt. They do base their claims on plenty of scientific studies and research. It's all in the back of the book if you want to check it out. I now have the knowledge of what goes on in the meat, dairy, and other food industries and I will make smarter, organic, free-range, etc. decisions, or cut back on certain things. It is very informative, and I'm glad to know what these industries would rather the public not know. But I'm not giving up cheese or adopting their plan verbatim. What I really like about it is that it's not a diet. It's a lifestyle change in eating habits. As a health educator I know (and I teach others) that diets do not work, but making healthy permanent change does. I enjoyed the book tremendously, but I would never recommend it to my mother (even though she would agree with all of their claims) or some other old fashioned, easily shocked person because of their straight talk. Some people just can't handle it.

  5. The book has some solid information, but some of the information is taken to the extreme or overgeneralized.

In general, some good considerations. I wouldn't accept the all or nothing mentality as it doesn't fit into real life business traveler needs.

5 comments about Hungry Girl: Recipes and Survival Strategies for Guilt-Free Eating in the Real World.
  1. This book is great! It has practical advice for those trying to lose or maintain thier weight. I recieve the Hungry Girl newsletter and its free! There are lots of recipes and you can get the recipe photos and Weight Watchers points from her web site.

  2. Hungry Girl, based on the website of the same name, compiles common-sense approaches to cutting fat and calories through smart substitutions. Useful sidebars offer comparisons of similar commercial fast-food versions showing fat and calories.

In the beginning, Hungry Girl (Lisa Lillien) offers up a useful list of recommended products designed to save fat/calories, including light soymilks, numerous fat-free products, and light bread products. She also includes Top ATE kitchen essentials (measuring cups, blender, etc.). Beginning with breakfast, HG offers up low-fat versions of Egg McMuffins (184 cal, 2g fat), burritos (239 cal, 3g fat), French toast (195 cal, 1g fat), smoothies and oatmeal (with pumpkin and cinnamon...yum!).

Other chapters embrace salads, soups, pastas, Guy Foods, desserts, and holiday dishes. Normally gut-busting items like chili dogs (109 cal, 1g fat), onion rings (153 cal, 1g fat), spicy crispy chicken sandwich (313 cal, 4.5 g fat), eggnog (98 cal, 2g fat), mint mocha freeze (55 cal, 0.5 g fat), and more are given low-fat makeovers courtesy of secret ingredients such as Eggbeaters, Fiber One bran cereal, and fat-free swaps like fat-free cheese, fat-free sour cream, etc. Cute drawings spice up the chapters.

Generally, the recipes are nutritionally sound and easy to prepare, but a word of warning: low-fat and fat-free products are plumped up with sodium, so the sodium counts are *insanely* high for many items (upwards of a day's worth of sodium in a single recipe), and excess sodium consumption can result in water retention, bloating, and high blood pressure. Also, the numerous sugar-free products such as sweeteners and sugar-free mixes can cause a laxative effect in sensitive people.

Also, the chapter on low-cal alcoholic beverages is suspect, since a recent study showed that mixing alcohol with diet sodas actually resulted in becoming intoxicated more quickly (21 minutes for absorption of diet soda mix versus 36 minutes for regular soda and alcohol). Of course, if you do choose to drink (these recipes can be made virgin), it's always a good idea to eat something first, which slows absorption into the bloodstream.

But for stressed-out working moms (and dads), Hungry Girl offers many palatable swaps of popular food from major chains that are markedly lower in calories, fat, and sugar, including kid-friendly recipes, that may be a good way for families to eat more healthfully.

  3. Im a big fan of this book! My favorite thing about it is the recipes are almost all designed to be one serving. I hate nothing like finding a lowfat/lowcal recipe that is only low fat because the serving is so small you need 4 to fill up. These recipes are made for real people, who are really hungry.
Im not currently on weight watchers, but its also a great book for anyone on that diet. I have been on weight watchers before and these recipes are mostly all high in fiber low in points.
The ONLY thing i would change about this book to make it better? I would add more pictures. But then again you can find them all online on the website.. and for the price you cant beat it.

  4. The book has some good recipes but i feel that it is lacking in variety and a lot of the recipes are really everyday items that you would make without the cookbook. I think the recipes on the website are just as good and free

  5. I really like this book. I am currently on Weight Watchers. Has some great recipes and helps me "defat" some of my old ones. Worth the money and I received it promptly and it was in excellent shape.

  1. This diet makes sense and it works. It does however require a time investment to prepare the meals and snacks. We are enjoying the new menu items in this book.

  2. Fist time (5years ago) i tried the south beach diet i lost 18 ponds and i really look forward to lose a few more with the new ideas and tips that comes with this book.

  3. I'm new to the diet. So everything in the book was helpful. I like getting my own copy but if you can get one at the second hand book store go for it.

  4. I ORDERED THIS BOOK AND THE EXERCISE DVD THAT GOES WITH IT BECAUSE I HAD THE OLDER BOOK AND WANTED AN UPDATED VERSION AND THE ADDED EXERCISE DVD. I HONESTLY ONLY SKIMMED THROUGH IT BUT IT SEEMS JUST AS GOOD AS THE OLDER BOOK WITH SOME MORE RECIPES AND THE EXERCISE DVD SEEMS VERY EASY TO FOLLOW.

  5. THIS WORKED! My husband did it and lost a lot of weight (about 25 pounds, I think). The thing that impressed me is that he was able to EAT while he was on the diet. My husband LOVES FOOD. Seriously. He loves to think about food, he loves to make food, he loves to look at food and he loves to EAT. If he can do this diet and STILL ENJOY FOOD (which he did), then anyone can.

Only problem: when he doesn't stick to it, he gains weight back very quickly. It needs to be a lifestyle choice and not something that you do for just one month.
