- I am a teacher who works with children who suffer from emotional problems and children who are undergoing treatment for life threatening illnesses. This tape/cd has been extremely useful for my students, their parents, for myself and for my fellow teachers. I have been using it and recommending it for 5 years, and have never had a person who did not find it very helpful. I have ordered every relaxation tape, but have never found one that has ever come close to the effects produced by this one. I use it every night before I go to sleep, and we even bring it with us when we travel. This is an A+ relaxation inducer!
- Here is a great CD to de-stress with. Allen's soothing voice blends with background music to offer a guided relaxation routine on the first track. Later, on the second track, affirmations are provided for the listener to accomplish inner work on health, abundance, financial success, fulfilling relationships and attainment of life purpose.
- This is the best meditation media I have heard to date. The sounds and material are superb. I use it in my office while crunching numbers or other stress related tasks. It is absolutely inspiring in a soothing way. Thank You Mark!

5 comments about Mantra: Sacred Words of Power.
- This is a comprehensive mantra tool-bag. A must-have in your library of book collections for those who're interested in playing of consciousness. Explanations are concise and clear. Most important is, you'll see results if you really follow the guidlines and practice it.
- I was drawn to this and glad I found it as I have not read a plethora of information about Mantras - but this is very comprehensive, interesting and informative. I have already started chanting and hope to continue with more. I have listened to these CDs in the car and transferred them to my iPod. I hope to take my own notes to remember information I am interested in. I highly recommend this series to open up new information to those of us in the "west" who think we understood much about the knowledge of the Hindu/Buddhist world.
- After chanting these mantras you will literally FEEL their effect on the energy body. I have to agree with the author that these mantras energize the prana(aura) because I myself had a very similar experience.
I started chanting one particular mantra for only ten times. I didnt experience anything instantly but when I went to lay down I immidiately felt a shift in my awareness. It was very similar to that feeling you get before attemping an out-of-body experience.
Although I havent tried the 40-day discipline, theres no doubt that these mantras work. Its best to start with the book, 'Healing Mantras' and then try the system. A word of caution--treat this mantras with respect.
- I have the book called "Healing Mantras". If you are interested in mantras, and you know very little, and you just want to get started don't get this 6 CD set with the book. Get it after you read "Healing Mantras". Healing Mantras gives you the basics to get started. If you want to go very, very deep into certain areas and to go much more into depth then go through this CD. I would start with the book "Healing Mantras" and get the CD with the same title. Then, if you decide you want to get more background information. You will have to go over and over this. Reading the book is very important if you are more visual. It is good to read the book over and over (it's really a study guide) and then go back to the CDs. I admit it is hard to absorb a lot of what he says. It takes time. Give yourself time with this. Thomas Ashley Farrand or Namadeva is very good. This book does have some typos, but that is okay. Some of the mantras that you learn are long ways.
I was surprised that I managed to learn it. I really like the Om Apadamapa mantra which goes "Om Apadamapa Hataram Dataram Sarva Sampadam Loka Bhi Ramam Sri Ramam Bhuyo Bhuyo Namam-yaham." It is very beautiful to chant that one and the Gayatri Mantra. The Gayatri I haven't mastered yet. It is a little more difficult, but very nice, too.
Namaste...
- I love the CD's and the book that comes with it. I've done a bit of chanting in yoga classes and such, but this study guide is really good. The sections are clearly described and grouped, the mantas are written out so that I can SEE the words as well as hear them - being a visual person this helps tremendously. I find this a good study guide as well as an invaluable reference.

4 comments about Managing Stress: Principles and Strategies for Health and Well-Being.
- This book is well worth every penny and provides its reader with myriad inventive strategies on confronting and coping with stress. One such strategy is art therapy. I highly recommend that every person committed to a lifeway of health consider purchasing this book. Walk in Beauty, ANP
- This is the "bible" of stress management books, a complete wholistic approach (mind-body-spirit-emotions) which is long overdue in the health profession. Reading this book is like having a conversation with a wise old sage. The CD of four relaxation exercises is wonderful. What a calming voice.
- This book is an excellent source of data on Holistic Stress Management. It must be used by students and professional interested in getting a integrative understanding of the relation it has mind-body.
- Managing Stress is one of the best textbooks I have seen and should be required reading at every school. The reason I enjoy the book so much is because it presents a whole new way of seeing stress - stress reframed from a positive, enlightened perspective. The book is such a comprehensive volume of information, including just enough of all the most important topics related not only to stress, but to mind-body health in general, as much as any author can encapsulate in such a huge, broad, and growing field.
Managing Stress is so good because Seaward helps readers and students recognize an important need in our culture for embracing a broader perspective of wellness, one that encompasses and touches every nuance of life including business, education, the arts, government, and so on.
Wellness is certainly not solely about taking care of the body, it is perhaps even more importantly about taking care of the mind and spirit. This book is endlessly full of great supporting holistic mind-body health research and tidbits, including fascinating studies proving the efficacy of the stress-management modalities provided. Through the study of this text alone I believe one can develop an in-depth knowedge of not only mind-body health, but of the whole human condition, what it means to be a human being. I cannot think of too many other books that I can make that statement about.
If you want to learn how to change your life, study this text in-depth, and then choose topics from it you are most interested in, and delve into them using many of the additional resources provided. Yet, perhaps most importantly, learn to put these techniques into practice and then you will find not only the jewel of analytical knowledge, but, even more, the crowning jewel of wisdom and enlightenment.

- This thin book is packed with excellent guidance to anyone who wants
to deal with the issues that makes one angry in this imperfect world.
I am so glad this book is not a thick book as it guides to you use the bible to help you see things in God's perspective and to trust Him alone in everything. I'm applying the material daily and am so grateful to the author for writing this wonderful book. Highly recommended.

3 comments about Entering the Now (The Power of Now Teaching Series).
- "Entering the Now" was my first exposure to Eckhart Tolle and "The Power of Now" series...the most positively impactful thing I have ever read or listened to (and that's saying a lot)!
When I first listened to it, I laughed out loud...at Eckhart's humor, and more importantly because my mind was blown away by the concepts...after listening with great pleasure to this several times, and then to "The Power of Now," the life-changing concepts are sinking into practice and the quality of life for me and those around me has improved significantly. This is the most important book/audio ever made. No exaggeration. You are not being responsible to yourself and those around you if you don't give it a try. Besides, it's fun. Sincerely, JB
- I love Eckhart Tolle and the content of these Cds is beautiful.
BUT this 2-CD set is already part of another 6-CD set entitled "Realizing the Power of Now: An In-Depth Retreat With Eckhart Tolle".
The point is that it is not clearly stated (unless you click on the cover picture to magnify it) and .....they have even used for this product a different title, colour and graphics!
As I bought both sets at the same time, when I found it out I felt cheated.
- I enjoyed the message and Tolle's playfulness with which it was delivered. The one complaint I would have is that his voice is too quiet to hear sometimes.

5 comments about Get Out of Your Own Way at Work...And Help Others Do the Same: Conquer Self-Defeating Behavior on the Job.
- Useful advice and easy to read and understand. You can pick out the chapters that concern you and skip the rest. The aphorisms do tend to be trite.
The chapters are sprinkled throughout with quotes that can be baffling. For example, here are two from the chapter "Procrastinating":
"Procrastination is one of the most common and deadliest of diseases and its toll on success and happiness is heavy." Wayne Gretzky. Maybe true, but Wayne Gretzky? C'mon.
"Teams share the burden and divide the grief." Doug Smith. Doug Smith? Just WHO is Doug Smith? The author's next-door neighbor?
- Dr. Goulston has produced another solid winner. I use his insights, wisdom and anecdotes in my daily work. He has helped me understand some of the behaviors that block my clients, and as a result, my work in presentation training has improved.
I consider this work essential for anyone in the training field, critical for those in the services industry, or for anyone who desires to understand and improve themself. If you read Dr. Goulston's resume, you know you're getting real world information, not theory. I bought more copies of this book to pass on to my friends and colleagues.
- This book is a wonderful resource. I find myself going to it when faced with a work situation where my normal responses and corrective measures aren't working. Dr. Goulston's book, organized by insightfully precise topics, provides an alternate way of thinking and acting in challenging situations - both inter-personal and personal. A great reference for when you don't have the time (or inclination) to delve into deep underlying causes of self-defeating behaviour, but prefer to take action and move ahead.
- Excellent book for our team building at work. Truely a good tool that will help your group in their leadership journey of knowing themselves and seeking self improvement.
- Humans are self-centered creatures generally incapable of recognizing our flaws. Even if we did, we lack the knowledge about how to correct them. Instead we see ourselves as we choose - rather than how others experience us.
In plain language, totally devoid of psycho-babble [even though the author is a credentialed psychiatrist], the author exposes the self-defeating behaviors which limit our success at work - if not in life too!
This book is an easy-to-read practical guide to identifying and rectifying the behaviors that holds us back from success. Each chapter identifies a self-limiting behavior and then provides a clear, clean and crisp example and manifestation of that behavior drawn from the author's own experience. The result is a book that is both revealing and instructional. Filled with analogies and metaphorical quotes from luminaries we recognize, it is laced throughout with common-sense what-to-do's and how-to-do's.
Interesting features include a bottom line comment at each chapter's end which summarizes the contents [aptly named Usable Insight] accompanied with appropriate action steps to take which rectify that behavior.
It's easy to see why the author is a highly respected and sought after coach, counselor, consultant and trusted advisor. This is a book to be shared with every one in your circle of associates. It will help each recognize their behaviors that limit personal growth and success in their job.
A must read.

5 comments about Good Medicine: How to Turn Pain into Compassion with Tonglen Meditation.
- This two cassette tape series of the Tibetan Buddhist teaching of Tonglen is a wonderful companion to the various other tapes and books by Ane Pema Chodron. Her delightful manner creates a welcomed ease for the student when listening to and working with the depth of her teachings and the honored Tibetan lineage she so effortlessly expesses. Having a "beginner's mind," I have enjoyed using these particular tapes to begin my own Tonglen practice as part of my daily commute into San Francisco by bus. All of Pema Chodron's tapes are great personal journeys, each the gift of an individual and self-paced retreat. This series is similar to her Noble Heart series in terms of pacing and format, but gently focusses on the singular practice of Tonglen. This practice has changed me in ways I am only beginning to understand. Until I can run away to Gampo Abbey to study, I will ride my bus in the early morning and breathe in and out.
- I first was introduced to Pema Chodron through the audio program "Awakening Compassion" - another great work. I then picked up a few books and "Good Medicine". The audio adds a fuller dimension to the message. You get a sense for how sincere and down to earth she is and this lends validity to the practice that you don't /can't pick up on from the books alone. This audio program is highly recommended! In contrast to "Awakining Compassion", I think the quality of the recording is much better - although the message and entertainment are excellent in both.
- Pema Chödrön believes we learn true compassion when we open our hearts and minds to a relationship with our own pain. This opens a doorway for compassion to be shown to others and can foster conflict resolution in situations that seemed impossible before learning "Tonglen."
"Difficulty as a way to achieve enlightenment" sounds quite correct and pain in life is almost inescapable. There are ways to lessen the pain of life when learning lessons and the faster we learn, the less emotional pain we may experience.
What is it that people truly learn from meditation? In this CD set we learn to make friends with ourselves, in order to learn true happiness. As we realize transitory elements of life do not bring long-term satisfaction, we enter a place where we transmute pain into love. Many artists find this healing and you can also learn to take negative experiences and mold them into a spiritually healing experience. It depends on how you look at your life in general.
The CD Set includes discussions about breathing techniques, meditation, tonglen practice, compassion, open-heartedness and the practice of mindfulness. An interesting discussion on "maitri" as the root of happiness is enlightening. The second CD guides you through a tonglen session and explores true stories of how tonglen helped people in everyday life.
Pema Chödrön shows you how to use your experiences to learn compassion towards others. She has a delicate and humorous repoire with her audience, making this CD set very enjoyable to listen to as she teaches you principles for enhancing your life with Tonglen Meditation.
~The Rebecca Review
- This is an excellent book that talks above all about unconditional friendship towards one's self as the basis of compassion for authors. In a Christian context, this comes across in the words of Jesus, "love you neighbor AS yourself." What this offers beyond this fine piece of advice are the techniques to get you there.
While this book is presented in a Buddhist context, it could be used by anyone whether you are a Buddhist or not. The information is universal and the down-to-earth style of Pema Chodron is easily understandable. She has an excellent sense of humor and positions ideas in a way that is easily digestible for a Westerner.
Technically, Pema Chodron is a Tibetan Buddhist nun, but this recording and many of her others have a very practical focus for the average person. It is difficult for me to believe that her tips, insights and these exercises won't be useful for anyone who wants a deeper connection to their heart.
The overall idea behind this audio is that growth lies in the direction of fully participating in each moment with as much awareness as possible. This means seeing pain or other difficult states as an invitation to what is called soul in the West. By "showing up" in each moment, we develop a deep compassion toward ourselves and a felt sense of our connection to others.
In a more technical sense, the focus of this audio is on Tonglen meditation and related practices. While it is presented in a Buddhist context, much of the esoteric or unusual cultural trappings have been removed from around the essentail points and teachings.
These practices really are effective and as someone who works with people struggling with all kinds of problems, I find that these are effective techniques. I also teach meditation and have reviewed many resources on these kinds of topics. In fact, you can see more on my profile.
While Tonglen in its most complex form is an advanced practice, this CD is a good start in that direction. I would suggest learning minfulness and metta meditation first, but you don't necessarily have to. This is also an encouraging CD for those in pain.
If you are specifically interested in Tibetan Buddhism and are just getting started, I would also recommend Fundamentals of Tibetan Buddhism and Buddhism: A Concise Introduction. These will provide just enough context to make this CD even more meaningful. The The Art of Happiness: A Handbook for Living and Destructive Emotions: A Scientific Dialogue with the Dalai Lama are also complimentary resources.
- Typical Pema Chodron. I have learned so much from this woman and her beautiful soul. She makes difficult subjects so very palatible. I could learn anything from her. When really stressed out, hearing her voice on any of her cds just brings me right back to center and allows me to focus and learn and "stay in the moment". A truly talented voice for the Buddhist way of life. Finding her was a turning point in my spiritual journey.

5 comments about Dancing with Fear: Overcoming Anxiety in a World of Stress and Uncertainty.
- after seeking advice from several professionals, numerous self-help books, countless "alternative" approaches and friends and family, i finally found the road to what i believe is a permanent recovery process (from anxiety). "dancing with fear" offers fundamental techniques and clear explanations that help to she light on the sometimes confusing world of anxiety. speaking as a person who has experienced severe anxiety, i can honestly say the book changed my life. not only does it offer advice on various aspects of life, it provides information on a specific program that can be completed with the help of a therapist. the goal of that program (coined the CHAANGE program) is to help people find a permanent, safe cure to anxiety. i can honestly say that after completing the program, i have experienced a sense of true relaxation, safety and confidence that i believe will remain with me for the rest of my life. i highly recommend at least a brief "looksy" at the contents of this book. i predict it shall be a valuable asset to many therapists and anxiety sufferers alike in the near future.
- This book has helped me tremendously. Anyone who has ever suffered anxiety should buy a copy. Foxman is knowledgeable, empathic, and hopeful. As someone who has experienced social phobia for the last 20 years, I can honestly say this book allowed me to take the first steps toward real recovery.
- There are so many competing ideas for overcoming anxiety available in the marketplace of ideas today -- that it is truly cofusing and bewildering for the sufferer to determine which way is the road to real recovery. I agree with Dr. Foxman that the road to true recovery involves changing the way we think and respond to life, as well as changing the way we live-in and work with our physical being. Healing in this way does not happen overnight but the rewards for engaging this journey and being willing to look the dragon in the face (i.e., the anxiety state) lead to a life of much greater richness, depth, compassion, and comfort than the life one had before becoming "ill" with anxiety. This book has left me feeling hopeful, positive, and understanding "where to go" to recover fully and regain my life. I will defintely be referring to it over and over as I continue on this path.
- Paul Foxman writes with a combination of comapssion and knowledge about this condition that is unmatched. His knowledge of the debilitating circumstances surrounding anxiety and panic allows sufferers to have hope in overcoming their fears. Paul Foxman makes readers aware that to overcome this condition, we have to concentrate on the physical, mental and spiritual aspect of our lives and create a balance between them all. The CHAANGE program is one such step to overcoming anxiety helps guide a sufferer through these steps. A must read for anyone who wishes to see the end of their anxiety.
- This is the authority on anxiety disorders and offers a tangible system for overcoming panic attacks. The book is available at www.chaange.com for the original cover price. Dr. Foxman is an advocate of the Chaange method. Check out their website. They also have other great publications. No need to pay more than cover price.

5 comments about Homegrown Democrat.
- Very good reading.
A hard book to find anywhere else, especially at this great price.
The service from Amazon was exceptionally good.I thought.
- Well, Keillor is truly a gift to the nation and as a fellow Midwesterner, so much of his story resonates with my own experience.
This book recounts the good that government can do; it is, after all, what civilizes us.
For the Republicant's - can't do public schools, so quit, can't have a United Nations, so quit, can't trust your fellow Americans, so gate yourself off to count your money - be warned! You may not like what you're about to read!
- There are really two Garrison Keillors. You are likely familiar with the first, the brilliant homespun humorist and storyteller on A Prairie Home Companion, which is broadcast from St. Paul, MN, Keillor's hometown, once a week on public radio. Keillor also does short (too short) bits daily on public radio under the title A Writer's Almanac, during which he talks about writers living and dead and actually reads poetry--poetry!-- on the air. It is through this venue that a more serious and scholarly-- though equally sensitive--Keillor emerges.
In Homegrown Democrat, he tries to merge the two personas, with his serious side turned toward politics. Although he does not always achieve a smooth blending, often bouncing back and forth between the humorist and the social critic from one paragraph to the next, the book is a wonderfully worthwhile read, perhaps especially because it does give us a broader exposure to the mind and thought of this champion of American bedrock values with a perennial twinkle in his eye.
A graduate of the University of Minnesota, the author is obviously an intellectual. Yet, more than perhaps any city-dwelling writer today, he has maintained a strong connection with, and affection and respect for, the lives and cares and ideals of average people. He opens the book with the Golden Rule, which, among other things, he says, formed his basic morality. Although he came to maturity in the 1960s, he says that he was more influenced by the values of his parents' generation than by the events of that time. More than once in the book he writes: "liberalism is the politics of kindness," and he goes on to list a few things that "do-gooder Democrats have done" for us all: civil rights legislation, opportunities for girls to participate in sports, clean air, Medicare, the right to abortion, public consideration for the handicapped (as in building construction), improved law enforcement, and an overall greater level of tolerance in society. The only major "gap in the social compact" that he sees is the lack of universal health care, about which he says, "our denial of the benefits to so many is downright stone-hearted."
In contrast, he calls the Republicans the "screw-you party"--which even screws its own. He notes (as have others) that what he calls the "corporate Bourbon wing" of the party gets the tax cuts and deregulation, while "the Bibleists get a few vague gestures on symbolic issues such as gay marriage and school prayer." As an example, he notes, disdainfully, that CEOs (based on the latest data available in 2004) now earn 476 times as much as the average worker¬¬--up from 42 times as much in 1980.
The only times Keillor stumbles are when he uses excessive hyperbole in attacking the conservatives. Thus, for example, in positing a hypothetical marriage law of the future, he says: "Marriage...shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman, or, in Utah, women." Unfortunately, if truth be told, the Mormon Church banned polygamy years ago. This, of course, is the humorist bothering the social commentator while he writes, but such exaggeration does little except to dull blunt the force of the author's otherwise valid criticisms.
Despite the above caveat, this is a special book. It is not an episode of Prairie Home Companion in print, although there is much of the show's gentle poking-in-the-ribs to get us to laugh at ourselves and poignant description and storytelling to help us to look at ourselves and others more closely. There is also much solid displeasure here, based on the author's feeling that as a nation and a culture we are turning away from the values that make democracy possible and life worth living. As with Keillor's broadcasts, you'll come away feeling satisfied.
- Keillor is an old style democrat in both the small and large D sense. He is a bit of a bleeding heart liberal, which he makes no attempt to hide or excuse. There is no doubt that hard-core Republicans will deride the book as the product of a naïve do-gooder mentality.
However, the historical evidence is overwhelmingly supportive of Keillor and his positions on the role of liberalism in making the overall quality of life better for people around the world. As Keillor points out so well, liberalism has been the driving force for nearly all of the dramatic social changes that have altered the world for the better.
No one disputes that the programs against child labor and in support of mandatory education have led to a great deal of positive change. The increase in the overall educational level of the population has led to dramatic increases in productivity and has been the driving force for many to rise out of or avoid a life of poverty.
The greatest single anti-poverty program for the elderly has been the social security program. Before it was implemented, a large percentage of the elderly lived on the thinnest of margins. After this Democratic program was enacted, the poverty rate among the elderly plummeted.
Keillor also mentions how liberal St. Paul, Minnesota has a program whereby paramedics and other emergency workers are never more than a few minutes away from any location in the city. He contrasts that with other areas where cutting taxes has been the mantra and where it is almost impossible for paramedics to arrive within the critical time window that means the difference between life and death.
Liberalism has been the driving force for so much positive social change that in some sense it has matured and mellowed to a point of weakness. Many of the people who so loudly proclaim their conservative credentials would never have had the opportunities to do so if it had not been for the existence of liberal activity. The world needs to be reminded of that and Keillor does that in an honest, forceful and humorous way.
- I'm glad Keillor took the time to write this. Outspoken support of the Democratic Party was extraordinarily rare at the time this was published. It was common to see people wearing T-shirts equating a vote for John Kerry with support of terrorism. Frank and direct criticism of the Republican party's failed attempts at governing were also rare in 2004. Keillor's contributions here are valuable, but even more refreshing is the biographical context he provides. The details of his rural roots, his early life in a large family struggling to make ends meet, his devout religious faith and the joy he took in obtaining a college education form the true pleasures of this book.

- Anyone who is reading me is able to adapt to technology. Do we need a stupid book to tell us so?
- La historia del libro es jocosa y me ayudo a ver como en el pasado yo enfrente los cambios: en el trabajo, con mi familia, con los amigos... Se que me ayudara a enfrentar los cambios del futuro y a no cometer los mismos errores.
- While the world changes ever more rapidly and with wider volatility, many people continue to wish (in vain) for constancy. People will probably never lose their desire for predictability, but acting as though no change is happening can be very harmful.
While we can all relate to this problem intellectually, Who Moved My Cheese? brings to bear the all-to-human emotions that keep us from taking timely, appropriate actions. As you read this book, you will experience those emotions and recognize their power. This will help you the next time you experience these emotions, because you will realize what you are doing. By making you consciously aware of your wishful thinking, you should be better able to overcome it.
I hope that Dr. Johnson goes on to write sequels to this book that deal with all of the major stalls that people are subject to: Disbelief, Miscommunications, Procrastination, Avoiding Ugliness, Defensiveness, Tradition, Misconception, Bureaucracy, Directionlessness, Helplessness, Xenophobia, Over-Optimism, Covering-Up, and Taking on Excess Volatility.
If you read this book from a literal perspective, you will probably not get too much benefit. Try to imagine yourself as each of the characters. It'll work better that way.
Enjoy!
