5 comments about The Answers are Within You: Unveiling Life's Greatest Spiritual Secrets in the Shadow of Your Soul.
- Over the years, I have bought and listened to well over 100 tape/cd sets produced by Nightingale Conant. This is one of the very best of the 100!
Although I am big fan of Debbie Ford's "Best Year of Your Life" book, the darkness of her other titles had me bypassing her other books. I came across this CD set and was intrigued with what seemed to be a more upbeat message. Wow, am I glad that somehow I connected (there are no accidents!).
I smiled to myself when, on the audio, Debbie called herself the Queen of Darkness...for that is exactly how I thought of her. Note the past tense. I now see her as the Light of Peace, showing us how we can take dark moments from our past and reframe them to be guiding lights for a better future.
Like Joe Caruso, whom I fortunately discovered the same week and recommend equally highly (his CD set is entitled "The Principles of Authentic Power"), Debbie does a great job of explaining how our story guides so much of our behaviors. Both Debbie and Joe use a presentation style that is like a "fireside chat", as opposed to the "in your face" style preferred by some speakers/authors. Note, if you need fire and brimstone to hear a message, this CD set is not for you. On the other hand, if you have a mind open to change, this CD set can have a profound impact on you.
The above publisher's information summarizes well the content. What I want to add is that what that content has the potential to do for listeners is to speed one's journey to the sense of deep peace that is so important to our health and personal performance.
Away with the Queen of Darkness...Debbie Ford you are a Light of Peace. And, that is a good thing!
- A bright side to your dark side. These CDs help you move forward if you're feeling stagnant. Debbie Ford helps you to access all the important, burried emotions that you need to understand your life.
- As a coach and trainer, one of the most persistent issues I see in clients is that of feeling damaged and limited by hurtful experiences of their past. In this audio series, Debbie Ford offers the perspective that every incident and experience in our lives comes bearing some gift of wisdom and learning. She presents the information clearly and in an easily digestable manner, using real-life examples to help make the concepts more understandable. She also leads listeners through effective and transformative guided visualizations, designed to elicit their own inner wisdom. In doing so she demonstrates indeed that "The Answers are Within You."
For me personally, the concept of "story" has been powerful in my life. With it I've been able to understand that the stories I tell myself and others about the events and incidents of my life are not necessarily true, they're just interpretations I've made up. With this understanding, I now have the ability to instantly shift the way that I feel about and respond to situations, by simply choosing a new interpretation. Very useful indeed!
- When the music kicked in on the first CD of this 6-CD set, I thought to myself, "Oh boy, here we go again." Soothing words set to the backdrop of new-agey music, the effect of which would wear off about 5 seconds after the CD ended. Boy, was I wrong! The Answers Are Within You took me on a profound journey into the deepest recesses of my inner world where I discovered a seat of wisdom, a place unlike anything I'd imagined before, a place where I could find the gifts, the wisdom, the lessons and the messages that lay in the experiences and events of my past. I feel like Debbie Ford unlocked a secret garden inside myself and then handed me the key, a key that has forever transformed my life from one of resignation, futility and hopelessness to possibility, potential and power. I highly recommend this package.
- Having been to Debbie's workshops many times, this is the only way I know of to re-create the magic that is available when you are with her in-person. This has her processes, her words and all her distinctions available so you can listen over and over again. This is a must for anyone wanting to raise their consciousness.

3 comments about Invisible Acts of Power: Personal Choices That Create Miracles.
- Caroline Myss presents beautiful stories of gratitude and giving to explain how meaningful kindness can be in the life of those in need. She not only addresses financial aspects of giving, but the invisible aspects where you can encourage friends, family and even strangers you only meet once to reach for the best they can be in this lifetime.
Why do some people practice generosity as a "spiritual practice?"
What is the most appreciated type of generosity?
How can you break through fears to awaken your own generosity?
What do people regret the most?
Why do we fear giving to those less fortunate than ourselves?
How can you build someone's self-esteem by giving invisible gifts from the heart?
Why is listening an act of generosity?
Caroline Myss has profound insight into life's many complexities and in Invisible Acts of Power she explores the positive results of emotional, creative, supportive and risk generosity. She now builds additional layers on our understanding of the charkas, although you can enjoy this CD set without knowing detailed information about energetic fields (the interactive charka model at her myss site is very helpful).
What is most interesting about the ideas is how they were inspired by real-life situations and letters sent in by people connected to her website through her newsletter. This opens up a world of experience in which giving takes on practical dimensions.
I can also highly recommend:
Self Esteem: Your Fundamental Power Audio CD Set
Why People Don't Heal and How They Can
Journal of Inner Dialogue (a beautiful companion to the Archetype Cards)
Archetype Cards
It feels as if I have come full circle with Caroline Myss' teachings since I was first introduced to her wisdom through a generous friend. The CD sets make wonderful life-changing gifts that will inspire spiritual growth and moments of deep contemplation. If you are interested in using your power for good, then this essential CD set will inspire you in profound ways.
~The Rebecca Review
- I have both the CD and the book of this powerful program. Though the book is good, the CD program is amazing and this review relates more to the CD program than the book.
Firstly, the CD program is Caroline Myss presenting the topic of the book in a workshop format. This allows a more intimate understanding of how service is an invisible.... and, in fact, sacred act of power.
More than that, the CD program gives you a deeper sense of how service is an act of power... and how service may be rendered in many differnt ways; some to ground the receiever, others to support and still others which show love and empower people... the greatest of which, in my mind, transfroms the reciever... and the giver.
There are many levels of service, each one a powerful act in their own right, however, higher acts of service are transfomational in nature. This program shows you the way to embody these invisible acts of power to heal youself and others.
It truly is a wonderful program.
- I purchased this audio book from Amazon and have nothing bad to say about the book but found out shortly that track five of disc one is missing. If you want the whole book make sure you see this missing track when downloading. Hope to see the whole book soon.

5 comments about 72 Names of God: Meditation Deck.
- Too busy for spiritual anything? Well you have come to the right place.Order yourself up this lovely deck a cards to surely please the empty void you know you carry inside.Just pull one card of day and your on your way to a spiritual path you only dreamed of.If you are not satisfied, it makes a great card game.Place a hat on the floor, and see how many cards you can fling into it.I love my deck, you will love yours.
- I use these cards everyday. I shuffle the deck and select on of the "72 Names" to work on each day. This item is a must for your kabbalah collection.
- Beside the criticism I have on the book which accompanies the deck, specifically in not crediting sources, I have some criticism on the deck itself.
There is a prohibition against images in Judaism, such as the third commandment. Some allow images with very few limitations, but those usually prohibit making images of G-d himself.
It is therefore unsurprising that Jewish Kabbalah uses little imagery, very little colored imagery, and none I know of associated with G-d names.
[Yes, I'm aware of the tree of life and it's associated colors, as well Jewish amulets, a few of which are colored, and some Jews have photos or drawings of Rabbis, but that's about it - no elaborate colorful - no Gustave Doré illustrations to the bible in Judaism.]
This deck walks a fine line at best in this respect.
- This 'pack of cards' is very interesting to have with you at all times as there is always a helping hint in the pack for whatever situation you are in.
One side has a title and a 3 letter name, the other a more in-depth explanation and the same name.
- I got the 72 Names of God: Meditation Deck by Yehudah Berg, exelente contition of use and on the good time.

5 comments about Beyond Knowing: Mysteries and Messages of Death and Life from a Forensic Pathologist.
- I was exceptionally disappointed by this book. Amatuzio is both self-indulgent and simplistic. The stories she shares are "sweet," but far from profound. One would hope that her years of dealing with death would have created a deeper philosophy. Instead she comes across as the Mister Rogers of after-life.
- I just finished reading this book. It's ok. The first half is more of an autobiography and a little boring. Being a person who believes that the soul survives the body, I enjoyed most of the stories and found some comfort in them. Not sure I buy the whole deal... but for the most part I do agree with the greater theme of the book, that life is eternal, there is nothing to fear in death and that the best is yet to come.
- Beyond Knowing is a touching account of a doctor's experience with death and those left behind. After death communication is not new, but hearing about it from a respected MD moves it out of the parlor and into the mainstream. Now that takes some courage on her part. Well worth the read... I wish it were a longer book.
- This is an excellent book. The author writes clearly and engagingly. It's easy to read and hard to put down. Some reviewers have complained that much of the book describes the author's path to becoming a forensic pathologist. I think this is a strength. It's an interesting glimpse into a world that most of us never see. If you enjoyed Forever Ours, as I did, I think you'll enjoy this one as well. Happy reading...
- A while back, I enjoyed Forever Ours. This book was an exploration into death. The author, a forensic pathologist, had been encouraged in her profession to be objective and somewhat cold about process. However, her personal experiences taught her otherwise. Far too often people came to her with stories of messages from beyond the grave or premonitions that happened to come true. In this first book, the author essentially wanted to see if these stories had any truth and if she could prove existence of these types of mysterious happenings.
By the end of the experience, the author had begun to change. She couldn't equivocally prove the existence of an afterlife. However, it was obvious that something she couldn't explain was happening.
In Beyond Knowing, the author writes from a more peaceful place where she is curious about these happenings but no longer questions their existence. She has seen the healing that follows these experiences. It's truly inspiring.

2 comments about Practicing the Sacred Art of Listening: A Guide to Enrich Your Relationships and Kindle Your Spiritual Life - The Listening Center Workshop.
- I loved the simplicity and great suggestions in this book. Making the connection that relationships are a part of my spiritual journey was a great awakening. I now see each relationship, each listening, with a new awareness and openheartedness. The book gave me new tools for making those relationships deeper, through deep listening and silent reflection.
- Here we have a slender book whose values of dignity and mutual respect
shine through the skills described. Not a "technique" book, but one that
illuminates the appropriate preparation and attitudes for making deep connections with others.

5 comments about Zen for Christians: A Beginner's Guide.
- I'm glad these sorts of work are becoming more and more popular in the literary world, because we have them coming from both the Christian and Buddhist community. Kim Bokyin is a teacher of contemplative prayer (a subject Merton always wrote extensively about) to both Christians and non Christians. This books' more like a beginners guide for people who don't have any idea what Zen Buddhism is actually about. Like a nice lure giving the fish just enough that, with any luck, they will come begging for more.
She's a very concise instructor in here, pouring over the fundamentals with a sort of ease and conviction. She explains meditation, koan work, non duality, The Four Noble Truths here; and what's more, Christians don't need to feel they need to give up Christianity to practice Zen. It may be true on a deeper level that in order to truly devote yourself, this might be so. But you can enhance your current religious traditions and spiritual practice with zazen (Zen meditation) at any time. Even contemplating scripture as though they are koans, is a beneficial practice. Christianity has a lot to benefit from Zen, allowing people to place aside desires for achievements (I dare say even heaven) and simply realize your life as this moment. There is no "goal." Only this. This was an excellent book, and for those with interest in further reading on the matter I recommend Ruben Habito's book "Living Zen, Loving God." He has studied Zen and Christianity for decades, and provides further illuminating insights for Christians on reconciling Zen with Christianity. Anyway, get this book. It's an invaluable tool on the spiritual path.
- Zen for Christians is a fantastic book for those wishing to learn more on the basics of zen meditation. This is a step by step guide to getting the most out of your meditation. I would recommend this book to any christian who is hesitant about the merger of another religion. It really is simply a christians guide to better meditation and not a guide to merge any religions.
- While it is true that one could practice, say, yoga, and practice it well and fairly near completeness and still be a Christian, it is a bit of a stretch to fully immerse oneself in Zen Buddhism and remain a Christian. Or vice-versa.
This is not and cannot be immediately apparent to casual and beginning practitioners of either Christianity or Zen. Certainly however it should be clear to Kim Boykin. And, after a fashion, I think it is. What she has done is reduce Zen to something close to a non-spiritual practice, a "Zen for health," if you will, in particular Zen for mental and emotional health, and in that way make Zen compatible with Christianity.
As Boykin points out, the central tenet of Christianity, that of salvation, is similar to the Buddhist tenet of right behavior. In Christianity all have sinned, but if we accept Christ, who died for our sins, as our savior we will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. In Buddhism we are not "unsaved" or in a state of mortal sin, rather we are in a state of pain and suffering, some of it psychological. We overcome that state through Right Living, Right Behavior--the famous Eightfold Path. (See especially page 91.)
Boykin goes into the differences and similarities in her third chapter, "Zen Teachings and Christian Teachings." Basically she resolves all apparent conflicts by stating that "Zen teachings are not doctrines." This is precisely, exactly correct. Indeed, the central spirit in Zen is to laugh at all doctrines, to find enlightenment through "killing the Buddha" and "no thought," which are ways to get away from the limitations of the so-called rational mind. Typically a Zen koan presents the student with a logical paradox and demands an answer, an answer that can only be found by transcending the rational mind and all doctrines. So, by this method Boykin can accept any facet of Christianity including the most literal and fundamental and find no conflict with Zen.
So be it.
However, there is no "God" in Buddhism. Consequently for God to have a "son" can only be understood in a symbolic sense. The acceptance of Christ as a personal savior, again can only be done in a symbolic sense. To go even deeper into Buddhist "theology," if you will, or "psychology" (which I think is the best way to understand these things, at least in the beginning) it is necessary to realize that for the Buddhist we do not even exist in the same way we do in Christianity. In Buddhism the self is an illusion. In Christianity the self is very real and transcends death. Furthermore, there is no concept of karma or reincarnation in Christian theology. Boykin does not discuss either idea, possibly because neither idea is logically compatible with Christianity.
What Boykin does well here is to show how Zen meditation can enrich one's life, how "being here now" and other Zen practices can lead to a fuller spiritual experience, as they have for her. From a Christian point of view, prayer is the most powerful meditation. From another point of view, prayer is simply one type of meditation. Prayer and meditation are both practices, or techniques, if you will, for finding God or nirvana--which to some people amounts to the same thing. Zazen ("just sitting," i.e., sitting meditation) is certainly a practice that would be compatible with any religion.
So what Zen for Christians is about is using Zen techniques to further one's Christianity. This is fine, but theological speaking, Zen and Christianity are different ways to God and cannot be held as truths simultaneously without some strenuous mental gymnastics. (Or actually in the impish spirit of Zen, they can be held simultaneously in the mind with the greatest of ease!) A striking example of this discordance can be seen on page 40 where Boykin recites a prayer learned from Karl Rahner. It ends with the words, "I am powerless, blind, dead, but you are mighty, light, and life and have conquered me long ago with the deadly impotence of your Son." Prayer is surrender to a power greater than oneself. But words like "the deadly impotence of your Son" have no meaning in Zen.
More in concert with the spirit of Zen would be the 46th Psalm as quoted on the next page: "Be still, and know that I am God." However, the use of the word "God" and the sense that "God" would actually demand something of someone is foreign to Zen. In Zen one does not speak of God partly because traditionally the Buddha turned aside all such questions. (It takes some study to understand why he did.) But theologically speaking, to mention God would be to immediately identify God in some manner, and that would be meaningless since what stands for God in Buddhism is beyond any human designation--indeed beyond human comprehension. On the other hand, in Christianity God is made personal. Moreover, in fundamentalist Christianity, humans are said to be made in the image of God.
Boykin's style is engaging and her recollection of her Zen training and how she came to the Catholic Church make for interesting reading. I had the sense that one of the commonalities shared by Zen and Christianity that Boykin discovered, perhaps in a subconscious way, is in the practices of Zen and the rituals of the Catholic Church. Although they are very different in structure and event, they serve some of the same purposes, that of helping the aspirant find spirituality. And of course the monastic tradition in Zen has some similarities with that of the Catholic Church.
Bottom line: While this is a good introduction to Zen, if you want to read about how Zen and Christianity can and cannot be reconciled, I recommend Thomas Merton or Alan Watts.
- If you are interested in zen meditation, and have no experience ,this is a good start, but there are many nonchristian meditation books out there that do a better job. If you want an analysis of christian and zen beliefs this does a decent job, but is very redundant at times and is mostly an account of the author's personal experiences. All in all the book is just OK, not good and not bad.
- I was plesantly surprised by the easy that this book explains the zen buddists beliefs. I was able to understand nearly everything the first time through.

5 comments about The Apple You Were Fed.
- This book is fantastic. I felt like I was sitting down for coffee and having a discusion with Kimberly and Andrea. The book is very insightful and thought provoking. I don't belive that fate brought these two women together, but I believe that Diving Intervention did. These women compliment each other in the beliefs as well as their writing skills. The book made me realize that as a parent you really do not know what your child is thinking and how innocent statements made out of love can actually make your child feel inadequate and unloved. My hope as a parent for other parents who read this book is that you step back and take a hard look at yourself and think about how what you say or do as a parent can impact your child for years and years in a negative way as well as a positive way. I would recommend this book to anyone who feels that they are not worthy and feel lacking in any aspect of their lives. How many parents really know if their child is a gauzer, ladder climber or cutout or if they are any of the above as well. THIS IS A MUST READ BOOK!!!. This book sheds light on how we behave in our daily lives, and possibly as to why we act the way we do. Thank you Kimberly and Andrea for sharing your most personal details of your lives.
- This truly is a book everyone should read. Girlfriends, pass it out to everyone you know. Kim and Andrea let us into their lives. Lives that we know as our own. We all have either a little Kim or Andrea in us. This is a journey created by two women who made the commitment of a true friendship, one of honesty, curiousity, and debate. The puzzle seems to be dumped out on the table and slowly and carefully put together before us. They travel down paths of personal growth together. It is amazing how these two opposites came together in the middle; not to apease one another but because the middle was where the truth could be found. Isn't that a lesson we could all learn? The dialogue is real, comfortable. I felt as if I was there having my 1-Equal & cream, cup of coffee right along with them.
- I received a copy of this book from my friend. Several of my family members are passing it around. My grandmother loved it, and she's a pretty conservative Catholic woman. My mom is way into it, and she is a more of a contemporary thinker being an inner-city schoolteacher. It's funny because when they discuss it, it's clear that they both had totally different experiences from each other, which were different from the perspective I gained. My reading is pretty well laid out for me, as I am studying for my doctorate in physical therapy; however, I found this book enlightening and completely different from what I've read my whole life. I am confident anyone who reads it will too.
- Copied from the Christian Newswire:
(Canfield, OH April 14, 2008) Pews are abuzz with concerned believers who want to know if there is a Christian book alternative to Eckhart Tolle's `A New Earth.' Kimberly Lisowski and Andrea Pouliot, co-authors of the newly released Christian non-fiction book, `The Apple You Were Fed,' would say yes.
Arguably, there is a need for the depth of spirituality and personal insights Tolle brings when nearly 80% of young people walk away from the Christian faith, and over 50% of Christian marriages end in divorce. `The Apple You Were Fed' bridges this gap by offering the same spiritual awareness but from a Christian perspective.
A spiritual tutorial, which Tolle does well, can often lead to more questions about living out the concepts in a practical world of everyday problems and life issues. While Tolle teaches, Lisowski and Pouliot uniquely share from two voices: a legalistic, stay-at-home, Christian, and a working, liberal-minded agnostic. As readers eavesdrop on two relatable women who show the gritty process to spiritual freedom as it unfolds rather than communicating their findings as do teachers, questions arising about how to live in a broken world are answered.
Their lives are fair game: past secrets, parenting mishaps, stressed marriages, struggling faith... they show all of it. By discipling readers through their trials of everyday life, Lisowski and Pouliot push past intellectual barriers, and force honest dialogue about deeper personal matters allowing readers to follow their path to enlightenment- Jesus style.
"People are asking, `How do I stop the destructive patterns in my life?' or `Why do I have it all, yet struggle with feeling unfulfilled?'" Lisowski states. By showing rather than telling, `The Apple You Were Fed' offers perspective to those answers. Pouliot confirms, "Our hope is to share that this Truth can be found in regular lives, without having to study for years in a monastery or travel the globe. It is possible to get `it' right at your kitchen table with a good friend."
Undoubtedly, `The Apple You Were Fed' will be the first to fill the void `A New Earth' has created in the Christian book world. For Tolle readers who are left in need of an anchor for the spirituality that he teaches, `The Apple You Were Fed' will share how Jesus' message of love had this "Truth" all along, and offer the addition of an inspiring yet practical view of how to live out this life-changing spirituality.

5 comments about The Way of the Superior Man : A Spiritual Guide to Mastering the Challenges of Women, Work, and Sexual Desire.
-
I think the problem many have with Deida`s books comes from judging themselves and view others thorough that light. That goes for the content, too.
I agree with Deida`s view on women. The thing is that, unlike many critics, I don`t judge women for it, and in no way do I look at them as inferrior. I respectm appreciate and love them for who they truly are on all levels, and I accept my role as the yang energy in the relatioship. By teaching them how to become stringer, love themselves even more and understand how beautiful they really are.
Love is the only truth.
- My understanding of female and male is that these energies are in each human being and must be balanced within for optimum results, whether you are a man or a woman. That readers are "agreeing with" Deida's opinions on women just isn't a great advertisement for this book. It tells me that the book is full of opinions that a lot of people (men, maybe women, too?) hold. There are plenty of popular opinions that don't really contribute to our lives in meaningful ways, though they may feel satisfying for providing a ready-made "answer" when we are faced with something we don't understand or accept. This doesn't get us any closer to moving beyond opinions so that we can allow ourselves and each other to be fully human and alive. Seeking to become "superior" is also cause for inquiry. I recommend a book called Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves by Naomi Aldort. Though this book is a parenting guide, I would venture to say that virtually none of us was parented in a way that encouraged full acceptance of our whole selves, including all our feelings. Naomi's book is a wonderful guide for how to begin the process of acceptance of all of our parts. Rather than reinforcing stereotypes of and opinions about male and female, it describes an inner process that can take us far, possibly where David Deida may be meaning for us to go, beyond the usual traps.
- I feel that David Deida has some great information on modern mans role in todays society.
- if you're into reading, looking for purpose, lost your religion or just not satisfied with your life, try this book. even if you're just looking to own your masculinity (for lesbians too).
there's lots of used ones to try too
- I have just completed the first chapter of this book and I must say it has really opened my eyes and slapped me in the face. I've recently came out of a short term relationship, if I had of found this book some months ago I would have still been in the relationship and had a much clearer understanding of how to act and realised where I was going wrong. With every page that I read, so much rings true for me. I was doing the complete opposite of what the author is saying. I recommend this book to any man or woman that is currently in a relationship and for those that aren't.

5 comments about Soul Retrieval: Mending the Fragmented Self Through Shamanic Practice.
- I purchased this book to learn a little bit about Soul Retrieval. Well, I learned a TON about it. It was a very interesting book and very easy to read and understand. I am so glad I bought the book!
- I studied soul retrieval with Sandra Ingerman and find her to be an excellent teacher. This book is a continuation of her excellence! Ingerman has a down to earth teaching style so that all can understand and her book is written in this style as well.
I have found soul retrieval to be a life changing experience for most people. I love performing soul retrievals as I know that in asking for the soul parts who are ready and willing to come back at this time, that the person and the soul parts are ready to work together. It was my own soul retrieval after the death of my son that helped me to come out of the deep well of grief I was in. And my soul retrieval led me to become a shamanic practitioner and teacher. I have found the language of my heart! This book is a must for all who seek to get well after trauma.
- This is the most beautiful and beneficial work I have ever come across in my 35 years as a Massage Therapist.
- This powerful book written by a highly experiencd practitioner gives extensive background, details and thoughful reasons behind the practice of "allegedly" helping people to reconnect with parts of their psyche that are causing them grief or are simply no longer available to them. The puzzle is involving oneself in this activity and that we may not have access to all the reasons for the initial disconnect. The words "better left alone" resonant with these activities because of our own arrogance and lack of all the pertinant details essential to back bringing together that which is broken. Even the most carefully mended object still exhibits the signs of the mend. Tread carefully unless you REALLY know your stuff.
- If you are considering this book STOP! Better to buy Mending The Past & Healing The Future With Soul Retrieval by Alberto Villoldo. I bought both books at the same time. Sandra's was painful to read; I had to force myself to finish it. Sandra thinks she can do "what no mere mortal can". She tells you stories of healings; with no reference points or verifications. She could have made up every "example". Like a 1960's book before publishers required actual facts. Villoldo on the other hand explains in great detail the why, where and whens of "soul retrieval". Sorry Sandra, but the jig is up. Good luck and I think you need to go retrive that part of your sould that threw honesty out the window!
