5 comments about Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul: Stories of Feline Affection, Mystery and Charm (Chicken Soup for the Soul).
  1. My little one is a big cat lover. Although her allergies forbid her to own a cat, this book helps her to receive a better love for them. We have many of the chicken soup books and this one is her favorite. Also.... shop for the book "The Secret" it has some footnotes from this same author. The Secret is a must for children too. Of course, we all want our children to grow up with a world of knowledge, well it starts with what us parents buy our children. Books...Books...Books.... people. Turn Off the TV's...

  2. Being a Lover of Cat's when I saw this Book--it was a "must have" for myself. Each story is true and has its own uniqueness just as every Cat does. It is simply a fun book to curl up with, you will laugh, cry, sigh and definately agree with, for one way or another you will understand and learn through each story about how amazing "Cat's" truley are. If you are a Lover of Cat's you will enjoy adding this Book to your Home Library-------this one you won't regret. MEOWWWWWWWWWW.

  3. I had recently lost my favorite cat, and was looking for something to help me get over my lost. I came across this book & reading stories of other people and their cats helped me get over my loss, especially the part about other people losing their cats! It does help your soul, when you lose your one true friend. I recommend this book highly!!!

  4. What a wonderful collection! It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me grab my own 2 kitties for a big hug. I like the idea of an anthology. I can take the book to work and read a story or two during lunch break. I also bought "A Cup of Comfort for Cat Lovers." If you like stories about cats you'll like that book as well.

  5. The stories are wide ranged in nature but sorted in chapters where you can identify with your specific cat joy or sorrow. Some of the authors are well known. Others are amateurs who love a cat. The list of Contributors and Permissions speaks for itself. This book is truly literature for cat lovers. I read every story and love them all.

5 comments about The Knight in Rusty Armor.
  1. This is a book that by reading it I was able to take a better look at my life and myself. I think that any one seeking to better themselves might be able to find some of the questions we look for...

  2. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have since given it as a gift to over a dozen people. Each person was very touched by at least one element in the story. This story is enjoyable to read and teaches many lessons without being preachy. Highly recommended!

  3. I received this as a gift in the Spanish version from my fianze - then later purchased it in English and read it again. It has great insight on the meaning of life and how many people get lost or caught up in the un-important and in the process they become prisoners by their own doing. Being a God believing person I personally chose to replace 3 of the main characters as follows:
    Merlin = God
Rebecca = The Holy Spirit (that speaks to us)
    Squirrel = a friend
Either way whether you choose to read this book - it has profound messages hidden throughout. The read is almost on a third grade level so you can share it with your children.

  4. I give most of my clients a copy of the Knight in Rusty Armor early on in our meeting schedule. I feel it helps people to start to shed, or at least understand, their protective masks. Eighty percent of my clients tell me that it was one of the more introspective and inciteful books that they've ever read. As a graphic example of shedding, one of my physician clients told me that he no longer wears a white coat when visiting patients in the hospital as he recognizes that was his way of demonstrating his authority, and to some degree to separate himself from the patient. However, there are other clients who, quite puzzled, ask me why I suggested that they read the book.
Another client read chapters of the book each night with his 7 year old son and would then discuss what each chapter meant to them. He was intrigued with the purity and incite his son had which caused him to dig a lot deeper into his own feelings.

All in all, I can't imagine very many of my clients not reading The Knight. It's a great tool for me to use and a valuable lesson for them to learn.

  5. We all have different Castles in our lives. We are all afraid of going in them and finding something horrible, but we must go in!
The author helps us go through those castles and helps us get the courage to go in them. It is inspirational and motivating.
It shows how hard it is to get rid of the armor one builds over the years!
Easy to read and to follow.

5 comments about Embraced by the Light.
  1. I am the author of: [[ASIN:1432710257 Embrace The Light; a women's story through poetry to touch your heart

This book is very touching to the heart, mind, and spirit. It will give you hope and faith while grieving your loved one who passed. This book Embraced by the Light is inspiring and uplifted. It suggests when we die our spirits go to a much better place. It suggests to live spiritually with God, To know that in the end we will be with God and our loved ones experiencing incredible joy, love, and peace. I higly recommend this book it will touch your heart.
I am the author of Embrace the Light-a womans story through poetry to touch your heart. I had a vision of Mother Mary at the age of seven. I was crying at the time for the abuse I was suffering from my mother and father. Mother Mary told me it was all for a purpose and that I would touch children. Incidently, I have worked with children for twenty years and miracously many of these children and young adults have turned their lives around. Like this book suggests God does exist and when we die God and our loved ones are all waiting for us with open arms. Treat others kind, trust God, live a spiritual life and Embrace the Light!
    Donna M. Solitario
Author of: Embrace the Light-a womans story through poetry to touch your heart

  2. This is a life-changing book - it changed my view of life and afterlife and helped me immensely with dealing with the loss of my parents. I could not recommend it highly enough. I have given the book to many friends as well as recommended it to both the support group from the nursing home my mother had stayed for the last 9 months of her life as well as the VNA Hospice who helped us during that time. They are recommending it as well to the current families in the program. We are here to help each other as well as to learn. This book helps you to be the best person you can be.
    Mary Ellen

  3. Embraced by the Light is one cliche after another. This book is written as 'proof' that Jesus is God, and affirms the faith of the author and anyone willing to believe her words.

Most of the story on her early struggles with faith, her near death experience, visions, etc are no different than any other near death account from a devoted Christian. Her vision seems to me to be something similar to an acid-trip, as the vividness and 'knowledge' she discovered is much like that of one using psychedelics.

The authors style is one of cheap religious inspiration...no wonder this was a bestseller. It preys on our desire to find deeper meaning in the world and to affirm existing faiths as truths.

  4. If you attack this book, you are not attacking Christianity. If you want to learn something about Christianity, stay away from this book - read the Bible instead. Eadie consistently denies the foundational ideas about Jesus and salvation found in the Bible and therefore cannot be seen as a representative of Christianity any more than a Buddhist monk would be.

Believe what you want about Jesus, but understand that Embraced By The Light is not talking about the same Jesus described in the Bible.

  5. I found this book very enjoyable. Made you want not to fear death. This is the type of book you donot want to set down. Excellent reading

5 comments about The Little Book of Quitting.
  1. I quit smoking for the first time in my life using the easyway a year and six months ago. It was the easiest and most enjoyable way to quit smoking, no lie. You can't describe the feeling of the "Magic Button" being pushed untill you experience it yourself.

Six months ago, I started smoking again. I read the book again and it didn't work. The button just wasn't there. I was too filled with self-disgust, fear and foolishness to let the book work for me. With the added tedious nature of reading the full length book for the second, third and forth time (without the elated "Magic Button" feeling), it just wasn't working.

This morning I read The Little Book of Quitting and I felt that button pushed in my mind. I know I have quit smoking again, once and for all. It sounds crazy, but I just know.

I think the big difference is that on my second and subsequent attempts I expected the book to work magic without really letting the content sink in. My advice would be to read with no expectations. Don't think about how it's going to work, just let it work.

I would reccomend The Little Book of Quitting for people who were in my situation. If you have read the original book and need a refresher following relapse, I would highly reccomend this book. If you have never read The Easy Way To Stop Smoking, I would suggest you pick that book up first.

    Good luck!

  2. If you don't already believe the fundamentals of this book you aren't ready to quit. The continuous "I AM A NONSMOKER" was annoying. Although admittedly, I'm not a big fan of the Cheerleader type self help books. I still can't fathom how this book ever got 5 stars based on quality and price. If you're committed to quiting talk to your doctor and join a group or try replacement therapy and skip this money waster.

  3. This book works best when you purchase Allen Car's "The Easy Way To Quit Smoking." You have to really want to quit smoking, and if you do, these books will make it much easier for you. I have not had a cigarette in one month, and I have not used any nicotine patches, gum, or lozengers to help. You are just continuing the addiction to nicotine by using those items. It is best to just put out that last cigarette and say "I am a nonsmoker!"

  4. I joined a quit smoking group and tonight was our quit night to throw away our cigarettes, etc. Someone in our group brought this book and read it out loud. It had numerous AHA moments and several things that are really inspiring about quitting. I was hesitant on whether I'd be able to do it but after hearing some of the stuff in this book I now know - I CAN BE A NONSMOKER TOO!

  5. As a supplement to Alan Carr's oringinal easyway book, the little book of quitting is cool. But alone, this book is not really all that motivational. I read the Easyway and this book twice, and I'm still smoking like a chimney. Don't waste your money, just go buy some patches.

3 comments about The Annotated Arch: A Crash Course in the History Of Architecture.
  1. This book is jam-packed with information, presented in a fascinating, readable manner. The introductory chapter explains the elements of architecture which helps the reader appreciate the extraordinary buildings humans have created through the ages. The chronological progression of the rest of the book's chapters highlights major trends and developments in building styles and materials, demystifying the origins of many of today's structures. The book is just as easy to read straight through, as it zooms along through the history of architecture "from the Stone Age to the Space Age," as it is to locate a topic of particular interest and to start there. The glossary and extensive index make it easy to quickly learn about any one subject, building, or architect, and the numerous sidebars and timelines help the reader understand the context in which a building was created.
The beautiful pictures and interesting stories bring you right to the doorstep of humanity's greatest achievements. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has ever wondered why a building is considered special, and think it would be a terrific present as well. Enjoy!

  2. I am teaching Art History and AP Art History this year and this book is invaluable to my students and myself. The students do a seminar type class and this book has provided such a qick reference tool for them when they have one of the artworks to research and teach. The large oversized pages are excellent. This book, along with the Annotated Mona Lisa, are wonderful reviews before the AP test. I am so glad that I found this excellent quick reference tome.

  3. As an Art History major, and a former Architectural student, I was skeptical when I found this book required for my study abroad course on French Art and Architecture. Generally, I've found that books attempting to cover basic knowledge on such a broad topic are somewhat lacking. However, after the first chapter or two, I was pleasantly surprised with how much information was packed into this entry level architecture manual and how few instances occurred in which I wanted to edit or add to the content. I would certainly suggest this book for entry level courses or course which only require general knowledge of Architecture.

5 comments about Codependent No More: Beyond Codependency.
  1. What an important book. Recommended to me by a therapist. It has changed my life. Now I recommend it to others who want to start living theirs. It's excellent, buy it.

  2. After years of living with an alcoholic man, I found this book through a wonderful counselor. It literally saved my life. I started reading and found myself within the pages. This book opened my heart and my mind to the good things life had for me. Melody's book, Beyond Codependency, is also life-changing.

  3. Melody Beattie, a former addict, used to hate codependents (which she defines as "people who have let another person's behavior afect him or her, and who is obsessed with controlling that person's behavior"). Codepdendents are most frequently the family members of alcoholics or drug users, but the definition is broad. Beattie thought codependents were hostile and detrimental to the recovery process. When she went through codependency herself, her eyes were opened to the world that these people live in, and to the potential for recovery if one can identify the problem and take positive steps to improve their life.

Codependent No More is a quick and easy read, and it will hit home if you have an alcoholic or a codependent (or both) in your life. Beattie provides example scenarios of codependecy, expounds upon the traits and self-defeating behaviors of codepdency, and provides self-help steps to move beyond codepdency. Although this isn't marketed as a workbook, Beattie provides checklists and open-ended questions at the end of each chapter, and a blank journal to record your reponses would be an excellent companion to the book.

Once you've finished Codependent No More, Beattie's next book (included in this two-for-one) Beyond Codepdency is a guide to the on-going recovery process. It also includes activities/questions to probe the reader's own experience and help him or her get a handle on their situation.

These two books are highly recommended and it is terrific that they are available in one volume.

  4. These two books have helped me learn how to take care of myself and how to love myself. These books spoke directly to me as if Melody knew me all my life. I read these after entering recovery from addiction only to find I had been codependent since childhood. These books have helped me learn how to be. They are like Life Handbooks that I never got. I am deeply grateful to Melody for these treasures. These books have done as much for me as biweekly visits to a therapist.

First, Codependent No More helped me see the extent of my codependence, which was like a cancer that affected every part of my life. It taught me how to detach with love, how to feel my own feelings, how to own my power, how to accept myself and others.

Beyond Codependency really put my recovery into action. It covers in simple concrete unambiguous terms how to deal with family of origin issues, how to set a boundary, how to deal with shame, and how to affirm myself. The chapter titled "Breaking Free" is a personal favorite.

How appropriate that these are combined into one. I personally prefer Beyond Codependency, but it is more the nuts and bolts, Codependent No More sets the stage and gives you the big picture.

I highly recommend these for anyone who struggles with having healthy relationships.

  5. This book was life changing for me. My stepmom recommended I read it after my divorce, as it had helped her tremendously when she went through hers. My counselor also recommended it. This book does have a lot of references to addiction/alcoholism, which doesn't always apply to everyone, but the information is valuable nonetheless and you can apply it all to your own situation. I saw myself in this book so much. This book gave me strategies for creating healthier relationships and for changing behaviors that I want/need to change in order to do this and be a happy, whole person. Her big theme is "take care of yourself" rather than focusing so much on other people. It offers a very nice balance between how to still be a giving, caring person but not get hurt or lose yourself in the process. I took my pen and underlined throughout the book as I went. I still go back and re-read sections and I find that it is extremely empowering. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Especially for people who continue to find themselves in relationships where they give more than the other person does, want their partner to change, feel unhappy and used and are not sure why, or just find that they have codependent tendencies.

2 comments about The Mindfulness & Acceptance Workbook for Depression: Using Acceptance & Commitment Therapy to Move Through Depression & Create a Life Worth Living (New Harbinger Self-Help Workbook).
  1. Strosahl and Robinson follow in the path of "Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life" but focus specifically on depression. A little New Age-y here & there, which initially might or might not be a turn-off, depending on how you feel about such things - but stick with it, because there's lots of powerful material here:

    - Strong and useful explanation of why we get depressed in the first place. Blaming biology or history doesn't help us; a more useful stance, as the authors explain, is to look not just at the pain in our lives, but at how we react to that pain. Avoidance pushes us into depression, acceptance and action pull us back into life.

    - A full chapter on how our mind tricks us with reasons & stories that seem to "make sense," but actually keep us stuck.

    - Nice accompanying CD with guided meditation exercises of various sorts, some for learning mindfulness skills, others for getting in touch with our intuition about what we really want to do in life.

    - Good closing chapters on building ACT habits that will last rather than fizzle.

See full review on my blog - www.raburgess.com/wholesight - or just check it out for yourself. You'll be challenged, but you won't be sorry.

5 comments about Addictive Thinking, Second Edition: Understanding Self-Deception.
  1. I read this book, making notations every night before bed for about a week. Since, and during this read, I'm in the process of being able to recognize my own addict-voice, (key in recovery!) who's purpose is to binge. I am extremely grateful for having picked this up, I struggle with addiction, and this has given me another tool to stay on track, there's TONS of good information within this slim and easy to read book!

Thank you to Abraham J. Twerski!!!

  2. For such a small book, it has a whole lot of insight into how addicts fool themselves into staying in their destructive patterns. I think this book would be useful both for the recovering addict (myself included) as well as family members who are struggling to understand and support recovery efforts. Dr. Twerski writes in a very clear, direct manner, and I find myself wishing the chapters were longer so I could learn even more. He tells of several of his experiences with patients which really help to drive his point home. If you are an addict or know of somebody struggling with addiction, I think this book can help you notice which behaviors should change.

  3. I was assigned this book for my Biopsychosocial aspects of addictions course in grad school for counseling. This is definitely a book I will not be selling back. It is extremely reader-friendly and offers great insight into the way addicts think. Twerski does a fabulous job of explaining addictive behavior and cognitive processes as well as explaining codependency. Whether you're in school and studying addictions, just curious about the topic, or have an addict in your life, I strongly recommend reading this book.

  4. I enjoyed the language and examples used in this book. Quick read with all the basics of cognitive therapy.

  5. Hello - this is actually a second hand review. I purchased this copy to give to parents of a twentys son who is struggling with addiction. They have said that it has answered a lot of questions for them. They are really pleased with the book. The mother said that it was almost as though the writer had overheard conversations with her son.

5 comments about Journal to the Self: Twenty-Two Paths to Personal Growth - Open the Door to Self-Understanding by Writing, Reading, and Creating a Journal of Your Life.
  1. This book has a lot of great ideas for using journaling as a way to explore your inner self. It is great for people who want to journal but aren't actually sure what to write when they get to the page! I found lots of great tools - clustering, dialogues, lists of 100 and many more. Several critiques - there were some unforgivable spelling errors and as the book was published in 1990, it seems a bit dated in its reference material and focus on "baby boomers".

All in all though, a great little resource book and very very useful!

  2. some great techniques for journaling. I tried most of them and liked them. They did not have some profound impact on my life, but it gave journaling a little more dimension and made it intresting. If you do get this book remmeber that it has ALOT of fluff( useless info); flip through the pages, get the gist of the techniques and go for it. It took me about an hour to read this way. It very boring if u read every page

  3. Journaling to the self is an amazing book. I'd recommend it to ANYONE who is a journaler or would like to start journaling. There were so many techniques I could barely contain my pen. If you want to spice up your writing, or want to dig deeper into yourself, or find a creative outlet for your life, read this book! It's amazing. My only complaint would be there there are so many techniques that I wanted to try that I will have to re-read this book, happily, over and over again to get to them all!

  4. I received the copies of the book I ordered in good time - coming to Australia. They were in good condition so I am extremely happy.

  5. As an on-again off-again journaler I have collected several books on the subject. A national magazine published my article on "Journaling Relationships". Now there falls into my hands Kathleen Adams' Journal to the Self that distills the best of the rest and introduces exciting new ways to use the personal journal. As they say on Broadway, "A Tour de Force". Bravo!
