  1. THE more I read it the more I enjoy my everydays life, people is getting used to complain and to get anxious about the future and they forget to live their beautiful lives, everybody's life is beautiful...and I have learned to enjoy life more since I read this book, highly recommended for those who keep worrying and never enjoy life.

  2. I have loved everything that I have purchased from Amazon.com by Mr. Tolle. This book I bought in Spanish for friends, as I was already familiar with it in my dominant language, English. Mr. Tolle's audioCDs are also more than excellent. He is able to make accessible to a very large audience some very profound truths. This, I feel, is his own particular genius.

  3. I bough this book for my sister . She lives in Mexico City. She found this book so amaizing thaqt has been change several aspects of her life.

Maravilloso!! Lo recomiendo altamente.

5 comments about BECOMING A WRITER.
  1. Long before Julia Cameron gave budding artists a creative kickstart with "The Artist's Way", Dorothea Brande was coaxing aspiring writers out of self-imposed dry spells, first with her creative writing classes and finally with "Becoming A Writer", which is a Cliff Notes version of the practical lessons she presented to one roomful of disillusioned students after another during the 1920s.

"Becoming a Writer" was originally published in 1934. Long before introspection became the norm in our society, Ms. Brande addressed the fears and frustrations that prevent writers from maximizing their true potential. She proposed a series of exercises to get one's creative mechanisms in gear and make the act of writing so automatic that self-censorship loses its hold. She scorned the adage that where writing was concerned, "true genius can't be taught", elevating the hopes of her students and the hackles of the existing literary community, which (figuratively) shot interlopers on sight. By encouraging the use of daily writing, regular exercise, and heavy doses of reading as the means of unlocking creative power, Ms Brande probably saved many new authors from seeking inspiration in a bottle of bathtub gin.

It's a small book, and the content is sparse compared to the huge volumes that occupy the shelves in the Writers and Writing sections of bookstores, but in the case of "Becoming A Writer", a little says a lot.

  2. I am not a professional writer, however, I am learning to write ebooks and wanted guidance on getting into the the mindset of being a writer. This book did the job for me. Although written in 1934, the advice is well ahead of its time.

I was procrastinating about writing an ebook for weeks and took the authors advice to start writing as soon as I get up from bed in the morning and write whatever comes to my mind.In other words, let the sub concious come forth with ideas and information. Within 3 days I had completed a draft version of my ebook.

If you want an easy to follow book on becomming a writer, I would recommend this to anyone.

  3. There are a number of books on this subject; and I own a fair few of them. This particular item, has put an end to buying books on how to write. It is excellent. All of the others are by the "how to" writers. This, I believe is the only one; by a "why" writer.
Why we do, and don't do things, pertaining to writing. The author taps the pulse that will enable you to write...if you follow her lead. And that is demonstrated, via the curious and excellent exercises listed.
This book cannot be spoken of highly enough, for effectiveness and originality. You will also discover much about yourself and various motivations you possess.
It puts a full length mirror up to the aspiring writer, and asks "So you want to be a writer?...well if you do; you better get real". Aaannnd...Dorothea doesn't go on and on and on.....!
Clear, written well, brief and to the point.
Best of the lot by a country mile!

  4. In this re-issue of Brande's classic (first published in 1934) this author, editor, and writing teacher focuses on the many problems writers face, and she proposes solutions.
John Gardner, in the foreward, writes "The root problems of the writer are personality problems: He or she cannot get started, or starts a story well, then gets lost or loses heart, or writes very well some of the time, badly the rest of the time, or writes brilliantly but after one superb story or novel, cannot write again, etc."
Brande concentrates on the writer's mind and heart, and not on writing technigues. She has set out to address the writer's personality problems, such as lack of confidence, and self-respect.
She asserts that there is a sort of "writer's magic." When addressing the disappointments and rejections that all aspiring writers face, she states, "I hope this book persuades some who are hesitating on the verge of abandoning writing, to make a different decision."
She informs her reader of the four major difficulties she has observed time and again, in her writing students, and writers in general: "The Difficulty of Writing at All," "The One-Book Author," "The Occasional Writer," "The Uneven Writer."
Brande believes that becoming a writer is mainly a matter of cultivating "a writer's temperament." That is "the author of genius does keep till his last breath the spontaneity, the ready sensitiveness of a child, the innocence of the eye." Some chapter titles are "Harnessing the Unconscious," "Writing on Schedule," "The Source of Originality," "The Practice Story," and "The Writer's Magic."
The book contains an excellent index, as well as a bibliography. Brande's insights do not feel dated to me. They pertain to the writers of today and provide inspiration, stimulation, valuable exercises, and the hard-earned wisdom of a highly successful writer and teacher. A valuable addition to every writer's library!

  5. Seventy-four years after its first publication, Dorothea Brande's BECOMING A WRITER is still relevant, important, and immensely helpful to writers at all stages of their careers. I first discovered BECOMING A WRITER a few weeks after selling my first book and it quickly became my bible. Brande taught me the value of wordless, repetitive actions (think knitting, needlework, gardening) as a means of freeing your mind and accessing creativity. I've had my dry spells over the twenty-five years since my first book came out, but each time I go back to Dorothea Brande's simple, elegant advice and work my way out of the slump. This is a must for any writer's library.

5 comments about A Woman's Way Through the Twelve Steps Workbook.
  1. This book is for alcoholic women who have not surrendered to the God of their understanding. The book holds out that women are "terminally unique" and can't really be helped by the big book of AA which was created by all men. The bottom line is that women are not terminally unique and the big book of AA is the only way to get sober. So, don't order this book, get the big book!

  2. The book arrived quicker than I thought, it was in excellent condition. Will buy from this seller again.

  3. The book I ordered was listed as "Used - Good Condition". The book I received was a different version (not the one pictured on the website), dirty, heavily highlighted and written in. I would not trust this vendor, GreatBuyBooks, again.

  4. This workbook is FABULOUS!!! You don't even need the companion book, you can simply use it in conjunction with the AA approved Twelve and Twelve. I would DEFINITELY HIGHLY RECOMMEND this workbook!

  5. Thank goodness for a book written for women in the program. Don't get me wrong but the Big Book was written with men in mind. This has been one of the best tools in my program for understanding the steps in a gentl and softer way.

5 comments about Relationship Rescue: A Seven-Step Strategy for Reconnecting with Your Partner.
  1. Dr. Phil just lately has been known in the Middle East through his program "Dr. Phil". I got to know Dr. Phil from quite some time.

This book is, as its name, a rescue procedure that the couples should follow. It starts with an inventory that each partner should do alone; evaluating him/herself independently, what were the weaknesses, how did I contributed to the failure/success of the relationship.

Then the real work begins..!!! Where the couple meets together and reviews the result. They should apply certain communication techniques. It is really very effective. At the end, the couple should agree and maintain certain techniques throughout the way.

It is not a book that you read for educational purposes, it is a life curing surgery.

For the best results, both couple should have the interest for the rescue. My advice, maintain the passion throughout the way, try to influence your partner if he(she) is not the driver for this process. It is a surgery...but very effective...

Wish you all the best while reading and applying this book...!!!!

  2. "When you own your relationship, you must hold up the mirror to look at yourself. You will finally realize that whatever your partner is doing, you are either eliciting, maintaining, or allowing that behavior." ~ 97

It is difficult to work on your relationship by yourself. That said, Dr. Phil believes you have a lot more control than you think. By analyzing your relationship you learn about the areas that need improvement. The book begins with a questionnaire of sixty-two sentences. You choose true or false then instantly find out if your relationship is in distress.

It takes quite a lot of time to answer all the other questions including sentences you complete and analyze. You may think you have a pretty good relationship until you see what the test results are. This book may even temporarily make your relationship worse, especially if you try to get your partner to take any of the tests. The 17 page family history evaluation did seem a little over the top.

This book requires you to make a commitment to making your relationships work. It is an extremely detailed program designed to improve your relationship in a matter of weeks. You learn to agree to disagree or to argue more effectively. You develop relationship skills instead of relying on the feelings (infatuation) you felt at the start of the relationship. Dr. Phil then delves into the dark side that can sabotage a relationship.

Dr. Phil completes the book with questions he thinks you might want to ask him and then in conclusion he writes a separate letter to women and then to men. For the most part this book is complicated yet engaging. The tests are fun to take if you have the time and they do reveal aspects you might not uncover in a more casual conversation. Dr. Phil takes on all the difficult subjects and puts the ball in your court. In one sense it can be discouraging to work on a relationship by yourself and on the other hand your partner might actually get involved in making the relationship work. "Relationship Rescue" is one of the most intense relationship books I've ever read.

    ~The Rebecca Review

  3. The Doctor focuses on The Reader, and hammers away at making the point again and again that it is The Reader, not their partner, that must embrace change and improvement. It's a strong book. I laughed at how he puts into light how good my relationship is by his standards of trouble. My reasons for buying and reading this book are the same as anyone's for buying a self-helper: uncharted territory and the wish of self-improvement.

My only concern is that this book would most likely never help those who are the ones who really need it. It makes strong points to this itself: You cannot control or change other people. And those who need this book are probably not smart enough to even consider reading it or seeing the need to change and modify themselves.

Thanks Dr. Phill. I am glad I read your book. It is strong and helpful.

  4. From what my husband and I have read so far, there is a lot to learn from Dr. Phil's Relationship Rescue. We also bought the workbook to go along with it and would highly suggest that people do that as well. The two resources put together are wonderfully productive. Just don't expect a "how to get your spouse to change" book, this is a book designed to help you better yourself. You realize what you are doing wrong so that you can begin doing the right things. Eventually, your spouse will come around based on your actions. The old proverb that goes something along the lines of kill meanness with kindness definetely applies here.

  5. This book is not what it is hyped to be, Not very informative and not what I thought it would be.

5 comments about Living The Secret Everyday: My Secret Workbook.
  1. Living The Secret Everyday: My Secret Workbook
Oprah was right - they should be teaching this in schools. Teens learn how to practice gratitude, set personal goals, and begin the practice of "possibility thinking". The workbook is very effective and enjoyable, a wonderful sping board for discussion.

  2. I have been practicing the law of attraction for years, but Living the Secret Everyday: My Secret Workbook is a terrific reminder of the basics to draw what it is that you want into your life. I also like that you write in the book, as it keeps your personal thoughts with the motivational book.

As an interior designer, I have discovered the additional power of using the energy in one's home to manifest your desires. No book describes this process better than HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT: BEAUTIFY, DETOXIFY & ENERGIZE YOUR LIFE, YOUR HOME & YOUR PLANET.

Read the books together and manifest all your desires!

  3. I was disappointed with this book. Almost half of the pages were lined "journal" pages and the projects given were exactly the same as those in the book, The Secret. Could have just done the suggested activities from that book and purchased a blank journal.

  4. I must disagree with the previous reviewer. What I liked best about this book is the exercises referred to as recipes. There were over 40 exercises for one to pick from... and there are some similar but most different from The Secret. I personally use approximately 10 and they have changed my life. Try using this workbook and I am sure you will be more than satisfied.

  5. It's hard work...to change the way one has been raised to think...to think consciously and live in the now and not the past or future to get that life you want. I have used this book for the past year and it has transformed my life. I got the opportunity to recently to use their new release Living The Secret Everyday: My Secret Meditation for two months and found it to be an amazing tool. Only 15 minutes a day and I am brought back to my life's purpose.I have found joy, peace and love in my life... because I work at it each and every day with these incredible products. Buy them both!

5 comments about Psychic Development for Beginners: An Easy Guide to Developing & Releasing Your Psychic Abilities (For Beginners (Llewellyn's)).
  1. Knowing nothing about this subject, I reviewed several books to see which could help me the most. This is the book that had the most straight forward and usful information. I highly recommend it. I haven't finished it yet, but hope to do so soon.

  2. the very 1st exercise in the book is a formula for self sabotage and destruction. Hewitt has you take an elevator 'down' to your dark side. he calls it your 'lower self'. he cautions you against getting off on those floors. he has you seal off and lock that part of the building and throw away the key.

First, your dark side is not 'down' or 'lower'. it's side by side with the light side. it's part of everyone's balance or ballast. an essential part of your being. if you repress that and disown it then you are cruising for big trouble. you need to acknowledge and process your dark side. sealing it off and repressing it will give it a life of it's own.

don't take my word for it. Debbie Ford has covered this brilliantly in "Why Good People do Bad Things. How to Stop Being Your Own Worst Enemy". quoting ... "There are many disowned aspects of ourselves that can and will act out autonomously, whether we want to believe it or not." ... "When ignored, they become powerful forces that can act as independent entities.". that's how we sabotage ourselves. instead accept and process all aspects of your being and use them to make choices. always try to avoid toxic shame and repressed tendencies.

Hewitt is one of those "Make the world a better place" moral authorities like straight out of the silva method. feel free to disagree with him (or me) on those points.

Want to develop your psychic ability? acknowledge it and start using it and trusting it and relying on it. start meditating to calm your mind. your psychic ability doesn't require you to know any secret techniques. make your own.
**** use your imagination for this. if you come up with your own techniques, they will be more powerful for you than someone else's because they come from inside of YOU.

  3. I had been searching for a book that would help me develop my psychic abilities. This one fell into my lap when I was reaching for another book at my local book store. It was an easy read with easy to follow exercises to help develop your psychic awareness. It is a great beginning book to get you started and it only gets better from there. Amazing results!

  4. This book didn't help me at all. Maybe it was me. It was well written but I couldn't put what was in the book to use.

  5. Anyone giving bad reviews either isn't patient enough or just expects the book to do the work for them! That won't be accomplished with any book. EXERCISING TAKES EFFORT THAT'S WHY THEY CALL THEM EXERCISES!
I was 16 the first time I tried many of the exercises in this book and while I had a very difficult time with some I found some to be surprisingly easy.
Yes, it is aggrevating not to be able to see images in a crystal ball the first 40 times you try, but it only took me about 3 tries to develop the magnetic feeling in the healing hands exercise. I can't find my book right now (since I've recently moved) or I'd be able to give the exact name of the exercise.

I bought this book the year it was released. The cover has since fallen off but I refuse to get rid of it. I have many underlinings and notes inside.
The exercises will work but it takes PRACTICE whether you use this book or any other. This book is my absolute favorite! Please ignore the bad reviews by people who are too lazy to take their time.

5 comments about Rational Recovery: The New Cure for Substance Addiction.
  1. If RR is so great, then why does he invest so much into putting down AA? As my old karate teacher Johny Rochette used to say, "don't badmouth other styles," (other martial arts), and "you do not need to brag about how good you smell, you let the perfume carry the message." In our state, the ACLU has banned/barred the courts from ordering to AA meetings. Mr. Trimpey's message is mute, and he should stick with what he is good at, RET/CBT, and leave other recovery programs alone. And maybe he should try a dose of his own medicine? Their is a thinking error called "victim stance," and he had a treatment center closed down by the state, a few decades ago, due to poor management, and he is still sore about it? He seems to still have his own "BEAST" voice in his head?

  2. This book is worth it's weight in gold! A welcome alternative to the AA/disease mentality. The author believes that abstinence is possible without groups and 12 steps. He also lets you "off the hook" from spending a lifetime recovering...once you are able to maintain sobriety, you have recovered. This method lets you move on with your life! For my family it has worked wonders! TRY IT

  3. I'll make it simple:
I was sick for a long time.
I bought the book, and read it.
I'm not sick anymore, and my life is since better.

I might add: This book is for people who AA just doesn't work for (in other words, MOST rational people.)

  4. If you are one of the almost 5 percent of alcoholics who can be saved by AA, you do not need to read Jack Trimpey's Rational Recovery. It is not for you. Rational Recovery (RR) or "generic recovery" is a way of quitting drinking or drugging that has been around as long as alcohol, and drugs--you just make the rational decision to quit for good and star behaving like it. It works for 65 percent of all people who give it a try. Over half of all who learn RR recover. Of course, making this rational decision is never simple, especially if we then have to act rationally, and that is what the book is about. First you have to recognize the part of yourself that loves to use. If you have trouble hearing this addictive voice, Jack tells us to say out loud "I quit, forever." If we have a drinking problem, we will immediately start an argument with the part that wants to continue to drink or drug. Jack shows us how to win this argument, again and again. The bottom line is that the part of our brain that wants to drink or drug has no access to our fingers or mouth, unless is hijacks the rest of our brain, reason, and self-control.

Being a licensed counselor, I know a little how Jack must feel suggesting an alternative approach to AA. AA people do not like RR people. As I write this review. I prepare to be burnt at stake, suggesting Jack is in his right mind questioning why none of the 12 steps mention anything about quitting, dismissing the belief one is powerless, or urging those who wish to recover to never admit they are "alcoholics" or "addicts." He challenges us to forget about "one day at a time" or "never say never" and embrace "I will never drink or drug again." Jack Trimpey goes on to show that Rational Recovery is a cure for chemical dependency by changing what we think and do. No meetings, no bottoming out, no moral inventories, no higher power, just quitting straight up. He shows us how to shatter illusions and thinking errors and act rationally sober. I have people raging at me for suggesting RR and patients complain about the copy I leave out in my waiting room. But it is not a matter of AA versus RR, but a matter of getting sober. This rational approach can sober up many of those who cannot benefit from AA. With over 80 million Americans drinking or drugging today, rationally it is a matter of AA or RR, please. Now. Rational Recovery saves lives. Read it and recommend it.

  5. A good book for people committed to the premise. Definitely requires commitment and the right mind set.

  1. A beautiful book that I take everywhere with me. The power of prayer and positive thought have made me a more peaceful and stronger person.

  2. This book is my bible. I take it everywhere, and I buy it as gifts for my friends, searching for healing, whether through tough relationships, illness, bad fortune, etc. This "non-religious" based prayer book can be understood by all. There is no religious distinction, but there is a warmth and comfort that comes over one when reading through the prayers which conjure such "feeling". I took excerpts of Marianne's prayers and used it for our Thanksgiving blessing...family loved it...so down to earth. If we could get away from our "separate" beliefs, so much peace and harmony could be the healing that is needed for humanity. I commend Marianne for her strengths in keeping the awareness of the light in all of humanity at the forefront.

  3. This was money well spent the Best book I have ever read,Thank You so much Marianne Williamsom.
The book is sooo very helpful

  4. I THINK THAT THIS A WONDERFUL BOOK AND I WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE IT HELPS ME WHEN I CAN'T FIND MY OWN WORDS TO PRAY SOMETIMES. THIS BOOK OF PRAYS ARE THE BEST.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND AMAZON.COM TO FIND THE BOOKS YOU NEED.

  5. This is an excellent book of prayers. I use it sometimes at night when I am lying in bed reflecting on my day, having a chat with God. It has some wonderful prayers and some wonderful thoughts.

    Enjoy!!

  1. I will be keeping this book next to my beside for years to come! Dr. Johnston's writing is not only eloquent and engaging, but her themes are bright and strong. This book is a must-read for any woman feeling lost in her own skin and in society. My relationship with myself and my food will never be the same again!

  2. I knew I had an eating disorder for a few years and it made me feel CRAZY. I read so many books, in a failed effort to help myself- but THIS book is it. What Anita has to say just rings true. Her method for healing digs down deep and also promotes an entirely new way of looking at things. I highly recommend it for ANY woman struggling with disordered eating.

  3. I'm amazed and delighted when reading this book... one "ahah" moment after another. Recommended by friends in DBT group and forever greatful.

  4. I purchased this book based on the high reviews it was given, because the description is not what I typically seek when looking for help with eating. However, I am so glad I did. This book is truly nurturing and helps us remember to honor ourselves and being feminine. I was also dealing with other insecurities that this book helped with such as body image and relationships. Very interesting and entertaining as well! I wish there were more books written by Anita Johnston!

  5. The best book written on this subject. The author uses a different approach than other books I have read and the fables make the book a more interesting read. Very much recommended.
