5 comments about Body Clutter: Love Your Body, Love Yourself.
  1. What first captured my attention and made me feel like I'd made a good choice is the preface to this book. It tells just how hard it was for the authors to 'fess up to their own body issues. VERY! I REALLY appreciated that level of honesty. The book then follows the FlyLady's procedures and philosophy. It's not fancy, just down home common sense. I bought this book on a whim, and I'm very glad I did. It has MUCH to say about how women take care of themselves and how they can change negative habits. Buy it. You'll be glad you did.

  2. Body Clutter: Love Your Body, Love Yourself

I love this book! Written using personal experience and gentle encouragement, this book helps us understand why we have too much body clutter by examining the clutter we have between our ears. Once we understand why we think the way we do, it is easy to see why we eat the way we do. So simple, so profound. Thank you for writing this book!

  3. i took this book out of the libray and could not make it thorugh to the end. the authors are emotionally abused and found comfort in food. they got heavy and from what i could tell they are sitll heavy. one of them has diabetes and she is over weight. i think they need therapy. they have a lot of issues and things bottled up. it does not tell you how to have your own exercise plan, how to pick a gym, and in one chapter it tells you to eat five times a day with small snacks. who has time to eat five times a day?

  4. I was curious about this book and after hearing both FlyLady and tons of Flybabies say that "it is NOT a weight-loss book", I decided to give it a try.
I do not need to loose weight, but as anybody I still constantly ask myself when to eat how much and what, and do I get enough sleep and exercise etc... I think the most valuable point I got out of the book was that it confirmed that I do kind of deprive myself of sleep and that I should love myself more and go to bed earlier.
This book is clearly written with a lot of love and good intentions, and the text is easy to read (except possibly if the contents bring up emotions in you that are hard to bear). The authors give personal accounts of their struggles and previous problems. I am blessed not to have such a troubled past. If I had, I think this book would have been a great consolation to me.
If you do have body clutter, I think that this book will address a lot of different ways of looking at your situation and that is why it is "not just a weight loss book".
So if you are not overweight (or have any kind of self-punishing behavior) and do not have a traumatic past, you probably do not need this particular book. But I'm a strong believer in FLYing in general. I have gotten a more positive outlook on life and my situation since I started listening to FlyLady & associates, and I think my family has benefitted from this in several ways.

  5. When we see an overweight man do we automatically assume that he smothers emotional pain by stuffing his face?

I ask the above question because, though I find Cilley and Ely to be engaging and honest in their discussion of the difficulties of obesity, I also question the premise that emotional pain is the cause of excess body weight. Women are so associated with emotions and emotionalism that it seems a natural extension to assume that any problem they encounter must have its origins in troubled thoughts and feelings. But is this an accurate way to look at obesity? Or does this approach have women vainly searching for emotional solutions to a problem that may be physical or environmental in origin?

My own weight has increased during a period of great personal contentment. I am not the walking wounded, my emotional life is normally even keel, yet those pounds are pretty stubborn. I wish the authors had gone into other possible causes of obesity and not assumed that my body weight is a reflection of inner turmoil. As in Cilley's previous work, "Sink Reflections," I expected the authors to spend more time delving into the details, such as how they integrate better diet and exercise into their daily routines. In this I was disappointed.

If you feel that your excess weight does have an emotional component, do read this book. These ladies probably have a lot to say to you that you will empathize with and consider. But if you just cannot attribute your eating habits with emotional pain, then you would do better to seek out a book with more detailed nutrition and fitness advice.

5 comments about Coloring Mandalas 2.
  1. I found colored pencils worked best for getting into some of the tiny lines and tight corners of these mandalas. I found coloring them to be almost medatative.

  2. If coloring calms you and you like art this is the book for you.

  3. Though I've just begun using it, I bought the Mandala Coloring Book to aid me in relaxation after hectic days and before bed. It is intriguing, to say the least. While coloring the intricate designs, I'm not able to think of much else, making it easier to wind down and "turn off" my head.

  4. Recovering from back surgery, I knew my artistic mind needed a more relaxing, yet retain a stimulating art media to keep my interest. This book does it! Mandalas do have spiritual or rather meditative foci that can help increase healthy thinking as one heals, but the FUN I have had using my professional color pencils, watercolor pencils and a bit of charcoal, chalk, and pastels on the quality paper in this book have really taken my mind off my pain. The mandala images are all on one side of the paper throughout the book, so no bleed through and as I mentioned, the paper quality is not cheap newsprint common of other coloring books. Since getting this book (and a few others!!), I have recommended them to several family members and now they are checking out this great way to relax and use their right "side of the brain" in more ways than one. One additional component of this book are the several pages of blank circles at the book's end where YOU can design your own meaningful mandalas...something many self-help instructors and counselors encourage people to do.

This book is definitely worth every penny and is one of the best of the adult coloring books available. I also wish retirement centers would provide this type of quality art books for residents to provide healthy mind stimulation and possible growth and/or mainttenance.

  5. I am really into geometrical and prism designs...they have an unspoken pull on me...the main challange for me when I color them is to balance somehow the color hues and tones with the geometrical segments of the design...so in the end to be able to get something stunning...the main drawback is when I let myself think too much about what goes with what...I like complex designs, they are more challanging...I use this hobby as a form of active yoga meditation(shutting off my mind while I focus on the design)...all in all, this coloring hobby is the simplest and effective way of gradually developing an inner sense of order, harmony and discipline...

5 comments about Speak Like Churchill, Stand Like Lincoln: 21 Powerful Secrets of History's Greatest Speakers.
  1. Well written with great examples. Not your typical textbook, which makes for a refreshing approach to leadership classes.

  2. I would title this book, "The language of leadership". It's content is excellent and well organized. It teaches ways to speak and act like a leader and therefore command such authority through the power of the spoken word.

The chapter titles all begin with "Power", but the author practices what he preaches by getting across the information in a well organized and easy to get through manner. If you look at the highlights in each chapter and skim through, you get the jist of information, hence making it easy to comprehend in a day.

Every chapter has its content and then real life examples from the author's experience. The examples are both historic and contemporary, very useful, convincing & often interesting, although ocassionally unecessary to get the message accross.

The criticisms I've seen of this book are that it is patronizing or too long winded or redundant. I don't find any of these things to be true. I however admit, that instead of reading the book cover to cover and sentence by sentence, I read it as any executive would read a proposal or document - skim to get the highlights and then go back in for more detailed reference when needed. I got a great deal out of the book this way.

I purchased the book for a Dean of a Business school and a high power executive. While skimming through it, I found myself quite absorbed. Since then, I've found myself continually thinking back to what I read there and I ended up buying myself a copy for reference and one as a gift for the CEO of my company as well.

Makes a great gift for a Type A executive or anyone in a position of leadership of any kind. This isn't just a public speaking book, and it's not about overcoming shyness or a "Toastmasters" type thing. It's about how to make what you say be powerful and effective.

  3. Twenty-one tricks of the greatest communicators and change makers of history by an author who wrote speeches for five American presidents. Five!! Imagine the experience of the author. Many of the 21 techniques are truly amazing. For example, Churchill's method of preparing a speech for the ear, Napoleon's power pause, or how to use effectively statistics in a speech. I'm convinced that applying and mastering only a few of the 21 techniques will supply the reader with the presence, poise, and power to electrify his or her talk.

  4. I'm not really a "reader" or a "book reviewer," but I must say , I have really enjoyed this book.

  5. I did get one useful idea from this book (write your speech in lines like a poem), but I gave up on it (which wasn't hard) when he quoted John Paul Jones as saying, "I've just begun to fight." If he can't even bother to make sure his quotes are right, I don't think I have much to learn from this guy.

Jones ACTUALLY said, "I have not yet begun to fight." And even if we learned that quote wrong in school, it's a whole lot better, and he should have talked about that.

I'm not too impressed by credentials like writing speeches for Eisenhower. Speaking now is a lot different, and I need tools I can use, not politically biased vitriol and outdated examples.

5 comments about Your Present: A Half Hour of Peace.
  1. I am a Clinical Psychologist, and have listened to many CDs. I am one of those who has never been able to stay awake to hear the end (or even the middle) of this very relaxing CD. I have recommended it to many of my patients, especially those who are stressed, anxious, and have difficulty sleeping. It has been helpful to and enjoyed by most everyone I have suggested trying it. As mentioned by others, her voice is very soothing and the cadence of the music just enhances the experience.

  2. THIS PRODUCT IS ALRIGHT. NOT WORTH THE MONEY. I COULD'VE DL IT ON LIMEWIRE.

  3. This is my fav guided cd. I've used it for insomnia, panic attacks, pain control & general stress relief. The first time or 2 I listened to it, it felt kind of strange, once I relaxed and just went with it.....WOW. There are times nothing helps my pain. High pain levels trigger panic attacks & that makes the pain worse-a vicious cycle. By listening to this cd I can soothe the panic, which takes an edge off the pain. This is a must for anyone with chronic pain.

  4. I'm not a big fan of the woman's voice. It feels like she is trying too hard. Also, the sound of the waves in the background is lacking quality and sounds more like general white noise than the ebb and flow of waves. In addition, there really isn't much variety. Nice packaging (lacking content) but of the two CD titles that I bought I would say Indigo Dreams (Adult relaxation-guided meditation/relaxation techniques decrease anxiety, stress, anger) by Lori Lite (but a male voice on the CD) is a MUCH better choice.

  5. I originally purchased this as a gift. After reading the reviews ordered one for myself and then 3 more as gifts. Obviously I was extremely pleased with this CD. The original purchase was for my therapist who holds meditation sessions and she loved it as well. My life has been upside down and this is helping to relive stress and help me take back my life in many ways. Example, my attorney, after 8 months without a car keeps telling me not to buy a car until my affairs are settled which could be another 3-4 months. After listening to this CD I took charge of my life and realized I am the only one who knows what I need. I bought a car. It has helped me to empower myself.

5 comments about Chicken Soup for the Teacher's Soul: Stories to Open the Hearts and Rekindle the Spirit of Educators.
  1. This book is a must or all teachers. The stories are an inspiration to all teachers who might think that their contribution is not having an impact. Very inspirational.

  2. i was upset, there was not a single recipe for chicken soup in this book, nor was it edible.

  3. I was a college professor of 19 years and have been a public school substiute since 09/05. Saw a copy in a public library and decided to get some food. Found myself turned out greatly by some stories, neutral on others and not touched at all on a few. But a great cookbook has some
recipies for everyone. Putting myself into the shoes of each author I tried to sense the feelings in their soul. Each teacher and student spoke from the heart. Surely one must be moved when another bares their soul, especially dealing with the trials and tribulations of working with children of all ages, trying to encourage them to learn and grow.

One never knows when a few words or seemingly routine trivial actions will have a profound impact on at least one other person. Eleanor Rooosevelt said it was better to light just one little candle than stumble in the dark. Most teachers cited light at least one candle a term,
regardless if they are teaching kindergarten or grade 12.

Let me share two here rather than send them in. The process of getting hired as a substitute teacher in many areas involves being interviewed and positively recommended for hire by a public school administrator. I went to my first interview perhaps not fully prepared psychologically. A
person asked me some questions over a desk: I could not answer them in K-12 teaching terms, having only previously taught college. The end result found an administrator suggesting I never be hired as a substitute. This was devastating and unexpected. Calling a peer at the education office, I was advised to out right away and get another interview. The second time, I was a bit more loose psychologically. The interviewers were very friendly. Good rapport waa established. I left that school toward the end of the afternoon with a strong rcommendation to be approved as a fine substitute teacher. Within 24 hours there were two interviews with oppostite resultsn. Isn't Clark Kent also Superman.

I started as an elementary school substitute. After a few weeks I subbed at the high school that viewed me favorably. Leaving the administrative offices after subbing one day I encountered two young boys who were not older than third graders. They proudly greeted me with "Hello Dr. K."

I highly recommend this book and your feedback.

  4. A great book to read when you need to remember why you became a teacher in the first place.

  5. From beginning to end, the wit and insight to teaching & students made this book an easy read about a very challenging undertaking. I appreciated the heartfelt writing about the perspective of teachers and likewise students.
This book is now a great comfort to me as a teacher.
It is worth the effort to discern a person's "learning curve" and engage them accordingly.
    Nice Read

5 comments about Care of the Soul : A Guide for Cultivating Depth and Sacredness in Everyday Life.
  1. This book was atrocious. My friends shrink recommended it to him for a read to help him, and I was wondering why he was walking around even more confused in life so I decided to buy it and see why. I now understand. I would like to consider myself very intelligent, but this book is not an easy read, at all. I found myself rereading pages just to try and understand it. The average person would get lost in all the fancy jargon. I found myself skimming the pages toward the end hoping someone would put me out of my misery. Would not recommend.

  2. The new paradigm Moore presents for psychology is extrordinary! He permits people self respect and an avenue for growth within depression or other mental disorders. Should be a must read for every one.

  3. I found the book to provide sound, every day recommendations for the care of my soul which has been neglected for many years. The book was recommended by a therapist and it is well worth the time to read it.

  4. This is a creative book in which Thomas Moore synthesizes psychological, spiritual and religious knowledge and beliefs of his into a deeper description and analysis of the idea of a soul. Who among us, with the possible exception of theologians, has spent much time even thinking about what a soul is? We use words like soul, spirit, intuition, instinct, feelings, emotions, etc., all the time, but seldom do we take the time to develop meaning for these words that ring true, or resonate on the level of personal experience. Moore peppers the book with numerous case studies of clients he has counseled. These examples add a great deal of interest and insight into Moore's thinking. He leads us into an examination of soul - what it is, what it might be, what it represents. This journey can serve to expand and open new realms for readers.

He adds depth to the book's message by suggesting that care of the soul works both ways: we care for our soul by listening, nurturing and abiding it. We are also cared for by our soul in the ways that it guides our lives, most often subconsciously. Moore equates aspects of the soul to our psychological shadows and subconscious realm of suppressed and repressed feelings, emotions and desires. His approach offers a useful perspective for better understanding the role of our shadows and for coping with it - including simply accepting the mystery the soul delivers.

This analysis includes a look at the inseparability of our soul from the soul of all-that-is. In doing so, Moore draws the connection between care of the individual's soul and the destiny of the broader ecology.

At times, Moore seems to fall back on his theological training with the Catholic church. These sections feel a little awkward juxtaposed to the deeper spiritual nature of the book. At these times he slips into a bit of a lecturing, imploring tone that, in its certainty, seems out of place in comparison to his celebration of the mysteries of the soul throughout most of the rest of book.

Recommended reading for its creative exploration of these interesting ideas!

  5. The book I was sent was in very good condition, only having a few small water marks at the bottom of a few pages. I would have stated this in the description of the book. Other than that, very clean and appears pretty much like new. Thank you for your honesty and quick delivery! Very satisfied.

5 comments about Armed Response: A Comprehensive Guide to Using Firearms for Self-Defense.
  1. If your looking for a great book that addresses the use of lethal force than this is it. A great place to start be it a beginner or old timer this is a must read. David Kenik not only wrote well but put it in a format that is understandable. Well thought out! This is a must have book for anyone who wants to understand what is needed to justify an armed response. It does not replace personal training or what can be learned in a class (interaction). It does however build a great foundation for what is needed to to understand in responding with lethal force. If you own a firearm for personal protection than you need to own this book.

  2. I didn't know what to expect when I opened this book, but was pleased to find it packed with non-nonsense advice and information on the responsibilities and consequences of owning and gun and using it for self-protection. Of all the books I have read on the subject, this one provided me with more information and food for thought that anything I have encountered to date. I highly recommend this book as a primer to anyone who has a gun in their home and believes they have a right to defend themselves and their family. Knowing the facts about legal, psychological, and tactical issues surrounding the use of firearms is absolutely essential if you hope to survive a shooting incident in your home, both during and after the event. A must read!

  3. This books clearly discusses the use of firearms for self defense without any agenda trying to convince you one way or another. It includes many aspects including types of handguns, clothing, legal responsibilities, and many more important things one might not consider at first.

You might pick of the information from this book by taking several defense classes, reading articles and forums online for hundreds of hours, and discussing it with many, many people. Read this book to learn things correctly the first time.

  4. While reading this book I could help but think this is the book Massad Ayoob would have wrote if he were writing "in the gravest extreme" today. This book covers many aspects and techniques. Worth the price.

  5. In short, if you are new to or considering concealed carry this should be required reading. Period.

5 comments about Can We Live 150 Years?: Your Body Maintenance Handbook.
  1. If you are looking for a simple and effective solutions to your health problems look no more! This is the ultimate holistic living guide. From correct breathing, through taking care of your back, to proper food combination, the author provides natural recipes for everyday living. The words are direct, awakening and motivating, causing you to start taking care of yourself.

Very important for me was chapter six - Complete Body Cleansing. The liver cleansing is really very rejuvenating. You have to prepare for the procedure a few days earlier by appropriately changing your diet. The liver cleansing itself takes two full days of total concentration on your own body. It is not pleasant but it is very rewarding. After it was over I felt like a newborn. Somehow it also pushed me to improve my eating habits.

Also very good is the chapter about obesity. Without complicating the matter, like many other authors tend to do, the author very effectively deals with the subject in one short chapter. He explains the reasons behind ineffectiveness of most popular dieting programs and suggests simple ways for dealing with the most common habits that lead us to gaining weight. PAINLESS AND EFFECTIVE!

Very helpful is also the chart on proper food combination. Applying the simple rules from the chart after my liver cleansing keeps me feel youthful and energetic, and I keep losing weight week after week.

No one before has motivated me so well. Just follow the simple advice for a month or two and you will see the difference. You will feel better and you will look better. What else do you need?

Another great book that I highly recommend for all those wanting to live healthy life and stay away from prescription drugs is Prescription for Nutritional Healing, 4th Edition.

  2. This book probably deserves 4.5 stars, but there is no such choice so I opted for 4. There is something for everyone in this book. It is packed with information about body cleansing, treatment of obesity and other common ailments, proper nutrition, proper breathing techniques, taking care of your back, and much more. It is very comprehensive and compact. In fact a little too compact for my eyes - it would be easier to read if the letters were bigger. I wouldn't mind if it was published in four or five hundred pages, or even in two different volumes.

You will find in the book many good alternatives to visiting your physician with a small disorder or inconvenience as we often tend to do. An example -- drink a raspberry tea, instead of taking aspirin. Among all the plentiful advice you will also come across some that you might want to take with a grain of salt, but if you approach it with an open mind you will certainly find a lot of useful recommendations.

I happen to disagree with the author on some issues. Specifically, in my opinion the calculation of life expectancy seems to be based on some wrong assumption, but my goal is not to live 150 years anyway... As some of other reviewers mentioned, I wouldn't make my own toothpaste, either. However, after you separate the grain from chaff and ignore all the elements that you consider too difficult or impractical, you will still be left with a lot of useful guidance that will help you lead healthier life.

The liver cleansing routine does require two full days of total devotion to your own self. It is not pleasant, either, as you first need to fasten for over a day, and then you need to drink alternatively olive oil and lemon juice. It is not easy, but it is very rewarding. I felt very much rejuvenated after cleansing of my liver. The good news is that you do not need to do it more often than twice a year.

The author also suggests fasting at least a few days a month. Not as a means to losing weight, but as a self-cleansing routine. Alternatively, if you prefer the easy way, take sauna each few days... By the way, the author also suggest an alternative, easy way of liver cleansing with the help of apple juice, but my experience tells me that "the easy solutions" most of the time don't bring about as good results as "doing it the hard way". And so on, and so forth...

To summarize: It is a good book, just pick up what you find useful and ignore the stuff that does not suit you. There is something for everyone. It's a very much recommended title.

  3. I'll grant that this book has some interesting information in it but it does not have any footnotes to aid one in finding out where the information was gleaned from. Also things like the simplification of one's character deduced by eye color is simply [..](pg. 146). This book does NOTHING to aid someone who is already experiencing chronic health problems. [..]

I bought this book and was really disappointed in it. You are better off with Dr. Hyman's books. You can also get better information for the cost of an internet hookup. [..].

  4. This book is excellent! I found especially helpful the chapter about Obesity - its common causes and the ways of dealing with it. I also liked the chapters about spine and cleansing. The remedies are great, cheap and easy to prepare. A lot of excellent health advice comes from the old remedies from the East. I got this book from my friend who is Professional Nurse. My husband, who also works as a nurse for over twenty years, fully supports my opinion about this book.

  5. I was looking for a way to meet my health needs without taking any pills, vitamins, or anything that you get at a pharmacy. A lot of excellent advise on what to eat and when to eat it. I bought it his other book "Cure the Incurable" with it. I read that one first. I think I should have read this one first, but no big deal I guess.

5 comments about Calling in "The One": 7 Weeks to Attract the Love of Your Life.
  1. this book is fantastic. i bought it at the suggestion of the bodhi tree bookstore sale person who said it was the most popular relationship book in the store. orignially i bought it for a friend who had asked me to recommend a book about relationships. but as i paged through it at home i realize i wanted to buy it for myself, too. i am single and i do want to meet 'the one'- but i am not at the place where i'd buy a book about finding him. but this book is not really about finding the one as it is about becoming that which you seek to find. if you are looking for love you need to be love- and you need to love yourself fully and completely. if you are looking for security you need to find security in yourself first rather than look for someone who can make you feel secure. if you are looking for trust you need to trust yourself first before you can trust anyone else. it's all very basic psychological stuff- but even the most psychologically savy can learn a thing or two from this book. especially when it's your blind spots that are causing you to not be open to love. even freud couldn't see his own blind spots.

this book does take a commitment though. the 1 star reviewer who said it was too demanding and too psychologically hard to bear was right in a sense. but the point of the book is to show you that the reason you haven't met mister or miss right isn't because you just don't have any luck- it's because there are blocks in your psyche that are deep issues that need to be dealt with in order for you to be fully open to love. that is not easy work. in our fast-food/short-cut culture where people are learning speed reading so they can get through a book in 10 minutes- this book could feel like getting stuck behind grandpa driving in the fast lane. but there is a point to the intensity of the lessons and the necessity of a commitment to doing the lessons each day for 7 weeks.

it is inevitable that those who read this book are going to perceive it in their own way as a result of experiences in their own lives. so someone who hates it has their whole history backing them up for hating it. i would say check it out and see for yourself. of all the relationship books out there- this is the one that makes you take the most responsibility for yourself and requires you to truly know yourself. in my opinion that is the only way one can find 'the one' and be able to create a healthy, lasting relationship with him or her. you may meet 'the one' before you truly know yourself- but those relationships are typically the ones that don't last and end in divorce. relationships are not easy. they take work. if you want to do the work in order to reap the rewards- read this book.

(as a side note- i have recommended this book to 6 people now and they each had their own reactions to it. they all have had resistance come up in some form or another to doing the lessons or committing to the reading each day. some were not ready for the work- others were. it's all about where you are at right now in this moment. also- this book is written for women- but i would recommend it for men, too. incidentally i recommended it to my ex and he and i are doing the lessons together. the author recommends you get a friend to support you on your journey and highly recommend it as well.)

  2. I intially picked this book up as a guide to bring love into my life but got so much more. The exercises, which are necessary for the success of the book, are enormously empowering, healing, comforting, inspiring, revealing, and fun. This is the only dating/self-discovery book that I have found that has the reader feeling like they are actually participating in changing/(bringing love) into their life and seeing/feeling immediate results. It differs from many other well written books in that although others are well written; they lack the specific tools for the reader to feel like they can actually control their lives. I could not wait to read this book every day. Life changing!

  3. This is an amazing book that not only tells you of the magic of creating the love of your life, but also shows you how to manifest it as well. With concrete exercises and examples, with stories that illustrate them, and with spiritual and inspirational wisdom to help you along the way, this is book that will help make your dreams of love and partnership come true.
