5 comments about It's All Too Much: An Easy Plan for Living a Richer Life with Less Stuff.
  1. This is the best book I have ever read. My husband is a hoarder, so we read it together. This book will help you systimatically go through your home and eliminate everything that you no longer use or need. I feel so free now, and my home is more peaceful and relaxing. It's a great life when you free yourself of the junk that keeps you from enjoying it.

  2. This book was eye opening. I actually checked it out from the library a couple times and decided I just needed to buy it for reference and share it with friends and family. It is a very useful guide to organizing, downsizing and training your habits on your stuff. Definite must read for anyone with clutter or hoarding issues!!

  3. I have read a myriad of books about space clearing and getting organized, but none hit the spot like Peter Walsh's philosophy of getting (and staying) organized.

Even Walsh admits that much of what he does is good ol' common sense, and it is. He puts his educational psychology degree to excellent and practical use in his career. He's one person who deserves all the positive publicity he gets.

It was refreshing to see another person say lots of the things I had been thinking about regarding hoarding stuff. I'm not a hard-core hoarder like some folks, but I did need that extra push to not only get rid of the things that had been clogging my space for years, but not feel bad or want it again when it's gone.

Although I have been able to let go of much stuff in the past, Peter Walsh's book enabled me to keep in mind not to continue to buy while cleaning out and to be extremely mindful when buying more things in the future.

If Walsh's advice were taken by more Americans, no doubt there would be less debt, less fat, and less needless stuff floating around. Highly recommended! - Donna Di Giacomo

  4. By process of self-selection, I would place myself in the better half of the population when it comes to keeping the clutter out of my life. Reading Peter Walsh's 'It's All Too Much', I was glad to find many of the suggested practices already in use, but I also found a few small gems which made me reconsider the status quo and make a change for the better. The discussion on 'cost vs value', was especially valuable: remember that the cost (what you paid), is not necessarily equivalent to value of that item in your life. It's that piece of clothing you bought and wore once, or an expensive present someone gave you and which is now occupying prime real estate in your house - it's time for it to go.

The only immediate shortcoming: the book, in all likelihood, will attract a self-selected crowd of people who are already well down this path. We all know a friend or a relative who could really use the lessons, but Peter Walsh does not provide any discussion on how to breach or introduce the subject. There, you're on your own.

  5. Simple and profoundly true. I sat down to rest, to write this. Must go back to THROWING THINGS AWAY, that are neither useful or important. Excellent book.

5 comments about A Child Called "It": One Child's Courage to Survive.
  1. I just finished reading A Child Called It and The Lost Boy. I knew this book was embellished after just reading a few pages into it. How can anyone seriously believe this account to be solid truth? It is so sad that someone can make so much money from telling a false story as if it were fact. It is even sadder that we buy into it and allow it to happen. I am sorry I did, I should have read the negative reviews. I trusted a family member. This book lacks the ring of truth as soon as Dave begins listing the abuse he recieved from the hands of his alcoholic mother. He recounts vividly all that she did to him, but never once explains why. The strange part is that for the first few years of his life, his family was perfect. They had a lovely home, went on family trips, had picnics in the park, daddy was a hero fireman, mother cooked delicious meals, decorated the house with hundreds of lights at Christmas, they got loads of presents from Santa, and most importantly Mother hugged David and loved him. Suddenly, almost overnight, she changed into a monster and began beating him, starving him, stabbing him and burning him. She laid on the sofa all day, drinking and watching her shows. The father sounds like he was abused by her too as he was not able to stand up to her and allowed David to be abused and drank along with her. David was the only one of the kids that was chosen to be abused, she treated all the other children well and they also turned on David. The family ignored him and made him sleep on a cot in the basement with no blanket. He was not allowed to eat meals with them and then not allowed to eat at all(not even from the garbage). He was starved, made to wear old ripped up clothes to school and not allowed to bathe(except for the days that his mother tried to drown him in the tub). His brothers and their friends would walk into the bathroom and see him laying there in the water and look at him with disgust. No one thought to say anyhing and when caught stealing at school some food from kid's lunches, he got in trouble even though he must have looked like a holocaust victim? No one wondered why he was wandering the neighborhood knocking on random doors asking for food? The entire town and school system were scared of his alcoholic mother so much so that no one dared to cross her. Even the cop that rescued him near the end was shaking and looking over his shoulder until they crossed the city limits? And he had never even met her, had only spoken with her on the phone. This mother was powerful. When Dave decided to embellish his abuse story he could have at least made it more believable!! The timeline even contradicts itself. Child abuse is not funny, and I am not making fun of it. I just don't believe Mr. Pelzer's account. I do think he was abused, just not like he portrays. He decided to make it sensational in order to sell more books. What he does though is make it sad for real abuse victims. He supposedly tries to get a message across, but fails miserably. There is no real inspiration here, only his inspiration to make money. He portays himself a hero. Any child would have done the same in his situation, survive. The will to survive is usually strong in victimized children. Many do grow up to inspire others, they glean depth from their situation and are able to make something good come from something bad. Dave Pelzer fails to do that. Even as an adult he fails to inspire me with his words. His journey is only incredible in the telling, not in it's depth. He seems to have gained nothing from his suffering. I find it hard to believe that people go to listen to him as an inspirational speaker. I hope his speech is better than his books. If my child were given this book to read in class I would have to object. It is no different than watching a spot from MTV for an hour. A waste of time, both.

  2. This was a very real study of emotions in the mind of a very young child.I wanted to know how this story would end. I felt that since it was the author's life story,he made it to adulthood, but at what cost?
I was so haunted by the actions of the parents ,I wanted to take some kind of action to see that these parents were punished for the damage that they had done to him.In my mind I wrapped my love around him to try and ease the hurt in his heart, mind and soul.

  3. I loved this book I read it in one day I Have read "The Lost Boy" I suggest if you buy this read the other one too! I could not put it down it was scary to think that someone could grow up being abused like this and lived to share his story with everyone!

  4. Check out "Dysfunction For Dollars" written July 28, 2002 for the NYT Magazine. The author, Pat Jordan, notes that "...In Pelzer's case, how much he is healing or how much he is swindling is unclear..."Peter Vegso, from his former publisher, Health Communications Inc, is quoted in the article. He says "David's always complaining we don't appreciate him, David's a professional victim. I haven't a clue if his abuse stories are true, but we kept his book in stock when it wasn't selling. Then Dave got on Montel Williams, and there was an instant demand." The author also notes that "Pelzer frequently purchases his own books for his signings at a discount and then sells them at list price." His brother, Stephen, was interviewed. He denies the abuse and says "David had to be the center of attention. He was a hyper, spoiled brat."

If this isn't enough to convince you, check out "Dave Pelzer, The child-abuse entrepreneur" by David Plotz posted Friday, Sept. 29, 2000 on Slate. He writes "Pelzer, whose most insistent piece of advice is "don't dwell on the past," dwells on it very profitably." Describing Pelfrey's depiction of his mother Plotz says she "becomes more cartoonish, more Cruella De Vil. In the first book, she's horrible but erratic. By the third she is the incarnation of pure, calculating evil, saying things like, 'You gave me no pleasure, so you were disposed of.'" Plotz continues "his (Pelfrey's) dialogue, which is full of such over-the-top lines, is sometimes suspicious. Though it's reconstructed 20 or 30 years after the fact, it is eerily precise."

Memoirs like this and James Frey's novel, A Million Little Pieces, (another Oprah interviewee) should never have made it as far as they did. It's a sad commentary that they have.

  5. I, too, like several others, started this book, and was immediately taken aback by the poor quality of the writing, AND the relentless onslaught of horrific, somewhat unbelievable, scenarios described by the author.

I don't doubt that he endured some form of abuse, probably severe, but it's hard to feel much sympathy for the story when there are so many holes, inconsistencies, and it's very poorly written.

Disappointed that I spent money on this.

5 comments about He's Just Not That Into You: The No-Excuses Truth to Understanding Guys (The Newly Expanded Edition).
  1. Don't ruin your life with this foolish book. First off, Greg Behrendt is a stand-up comic, not an expert. Second, his "research" consists of emailing questions to a handful of personal friends. Furthermore, he comes across as being a narcissist and clearly a very controlling personality. I suppose if a woman wants to attract a narcissist, a Scott Peterson-type sociopath, a controlling abuser, or an obsessed stalker, then this book will be a very handy tool.

Adult men who come on like gangbusters in beginning are either desperately needy or have extremely shallow emotions, and are most likely either narcissistic or sociopathic or at least controlling. Period. These men lack the depth of emotion necessary to feel real love - otherwise it would take them some time to let it grow. What "love" is to them is being instantly infatuated with a woman's appearance and suitability. That wears off in time and they drop you like a hot rock for the next infatuation. Be wary of the ones who are "really, really into you" right off the bat, and if they are extremely charming, doting and flatter you a lot, RUN! Think about Amber Frey.

Also, he never reveals the number one reason a man loses interest in a woman: she has sex with him too soon. It's a double standard, but it's the truth, so deal with it. No man truly appreciates an easy woman. If Behrendt had an ounce of sense he would have said on every page to wait at least a couple of months, and definitely once exclusivity is mutually agreed upon, before consummating a relationship. Instead he rants on and on about NEVER, EVER calling a guy. That is ridiculous. All the nice, normal guys I know have a three try rule: if she doesn't call you back after three tries, leave her alone because she isn't interested. Only the most dangerous of men will keep pursuing a woman who never calls him back.

There are so very many misleading notions in this book that I could go on for pages, but essentially Behrendt has everything upside-down and backward: he advises to make it darned near impossible for a man to even get your phone number, unless he behaves like a desperate stalker, but then once you go out with the guy, you can feel free to immediately have sex and expect him to call you daily and act like you're in an established relationship - all in the first few weeks! In reality, you should let a man you like have your phone number, but then make him court you and work hard to EARN your trust and affection over time as you get to know each other, let real love blossom, and BUILD UP to an established relationship before sex becomes part of it. Duh!

The best book in the world on the subject of relationships is "Why Men Love Bitches" by Sherry Argov. It is very well researched and is based on interviews with many hundreds of men and women from all walks of life. It is written with great wisdom and humor and will explain everything you need to know about men and dating, such as why men don't call (not necessarily a reason to dump them); why you must wait to have sex; what drives men away; how to rekindle a man's interest; etc. Most importantly, it teaches women how to get into, and stay in, the driver's seat at all times. It transformed my dating life overnight and I haven't had trouble understanding men since.

John Gray's Mars and Venus series is excellent, too.

  2. As corny as it sounds, this book turned my love life around. For years I made the rounds with guys who wasted my time. This book "laid down the law" in very concise and light-hearted manner. I quickly recognized the symptoms and got rid of the time wasters, found a guy who was truly interested and now been happily married for 1.5 years!!!

  3. Although this book seems intended for women who have never been married before, as a recent divorcee, I found this book had a lot of good advice. I wish I had read it before I married the first time! Now dating for a second time and really the first time as an adult, its helped me understand why men act the way they do. The letters interwoven in the book really help illustrate exactly how men are not really into certain relationships. I, like Greg, know there is someone special out there for me and feel I can better decipher when to get out of a dead-end relationship and get to the relationship I'm meant to have. I've passed the book onto my 18 year old niece so she'll be smarter as she dates. Thanks Greg and Liz!

  4. The theory on how to handle guys and relationships in "He's Just Not that into You" can certainly be seen as very controversial, and perhaps women may initially find it to be offensive. But after reading the book I'd have to say it's the most liberating piece of literature that I have ever read. A few months prior I had broken up with a boyfriend of two and a half years and was in another budding relationship when I started the book. Not only did I get closure from the one, I realized my current relationship had hit a dead end. I hate feminist literature, but I'd have to admit that this book is empowering. It teaches women to take there life and their love into there own hands and it genuinely hopes to prevent women from being jerked around anymore by the slew of awful guys that are out there. I would recommend this book to every woman I know, especially my closest friends and family. With an open mind and a willing heart, this book is an invaluable tool to every soul out there.

  5. All you single women need to read this book!! I'm sure we've all had a guy like that at one time or another...oh and the book arrived in a timely manner and was in great condition :)

5 comments about The Easy Way to Stop Smoking: Join the Millions Who Have Become Non-Smokers Using Allen Carr's Easyway Method.
  1. Purchased this book for myself. I liked it so well I bought 3 more to give to my smoking friends. It took me awhile to read it; I would read small sections at a time (the book actually deals with that same head game we smokers play). But once I resolved to actually read it, by the time I was finished with the book, I was finished with cigarettes. This book cost under $15 and it worked for me. All the other "Quit Smoking" gimmicks and drugs cost way more than that. This book was written by a 5 pack a day smoker. There is no excuse or "reason" for smoking that he hasn't thought of already. He pretty much nails every one of them on the head. If you truly want to get away from this habit, purchase this book. It was the best money I've spent in ages.

  2. Think maybe you're different? That YOUR smoking addiction is unique, and that's why other people can quit, but you can't? And that nobody but you can understand that?

Uh huh - been there. Done that. That's why I smoked every day for 46 years.

The day after reading Allen Carr's book, I quit and stayed quit. Nuf said.

Get it the book and do what he says, simple as it is! It works!

  3. My Hubby and I both quit after reading this book. We had tried hypnosis, gum, patches, Wellbutrin, Chantix, herbs etc in the past.
I did not know that stopping smoking could be so easy and I can say with
confidence I will never smoke again.

  4. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is thinking of quitting smoking. I quit many moons ago for 8 years and did the "will power" way. I was miserable, I changed my life completely to stay away from all my triggers, was grumpy and almost lost my best friend. Oh, and gained 20 lbs. I had been smoking again for about 8 years (yes, ridiculous!) and tried several times to quit (will power, hypnosis, anti-depressants, you name it) but eventually started back up again. I can't even describe how different it is this time quitting with the guidance of this book. I have no doubt I'm done for good and feel fabulous!

I also bought a copy for all my close friends that still smoke and the 1 that has finished the book has also quit and feels great about it.

  5. First of all. The most telling information in this book was that some people stop reading it in the middle because they know that if they finish it they will quit smoking. Or they were given the book and didn't read it for a long time and wished after reading it that they had read it right away.

I have been smoking a pack or more a day for 10 years. I have tried to quit several times either on my own or with the patch. I always failed. Now I know why. This is the easy way. I have only had a couple of bad days and when I say bad, I mean, I though about buying cigs for a bit on the way home from work and then laughed and just didn't do it.

One more great suggestion in this book is to after quitting, go to a party or somewhere that you usually smoke at. I didn't wait until after my final cigarette. I just went to a party and didn't smoke and I noticed how uncomfortable that made the "smokers". I didn't brag or even talk about quitting. (I had said a month ago that I was quitting before my 50th birthday). I just had a great time without smoking and I truly didn't miss it. I think that helped me most of all to get to that final cigarette and keep it final.

This is the book for you if you are finally ready like I was!

5 comments about NLP: The New Technology of Achievement.
  1. Unlike some books and cd's about NLP, this cd does not promote it as some kind of magical cure all. NLP is presented for what it is, a useful and practical means of changing the way we think and associate things in our brains. Its our internal feedback and associations that feeds our fears and limits our thinking. NLP, is one way of overwriting the circuits in our brains with new and more helpful circuits. This is a no Bull, practical program.

  2. This book has it all, as a new NLP enquirer, I loved this book because it gave me the basics all in one book...Must have starter book for beginers or the curious.

  3. I like this book. It's easier to follow than my first venture into NLP, which was Anthony Robbins's 'Ultimate Power.' It's not that UP is a bad book--it's very inspirational to be honest--but I think what Robbbins is giving you in UP is how NLP worked for him.

This book is structured better, offers many more exercises, and generally is a more enjoyable read (the more you reflect on your behavioral patterns, the more you understand yourself, and the more you appreciate this book). Also, it doesn't offer the absurd advice on nutrition that Robbins's book does.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who thinks NLP might be for them.

  4. I am giving this book two stars- but I begrudge it the second one. It has to be two because it DOES contain the information I bought it for. But I wish I could in good conscience give it one single star- or fewer- because on nearly every page, there's something that makes me want to reach through the book and slap the writers.

I don't enjoy books that effuse with frothy enthusiasm so trillingly that it undercuts the information it's supposed to deliver. And I don't enjoy books where the authors seem to be addressing me and my curiosity about the topic in a sugary voice as if I am a Kindergartner.

So I am not enjoying this book. At all.

I wish that before I'd purchased this book I'd seen the dedication page. It reads: "Dedicated to the joyful heart and soaring spirit of every child reaching for a greater world, especially in yourself."

Now, friends- I sincerely hope your heart is joyful and that your spirit soars. But that sugary prose in the dedication would have tipped me off about what was ahead- and I'd have run for the hills. To get to the information, you have to deal with the authors achingly precious hopes for this book to change your life.

Ever have a cappucino that was all foam with only a little sip of coffee at the bottom of the cup? Remember how you raised the paper cup to your lips and there wasn't anything to swig? Remember the sense that you'd just been ripped off?

Yeah. It's a lot like that.

If you like non-fiction delivered to you like a bed-time story, maybe you'll like this book. But if not-- don't buy this book. Run very fast to the next selection.

If I can stop even one person from buying this book, it was worth my time to write this review.

  5. This is a great book on how to improve your performance in any area of your life. I've only just started applying some of the ideas and already I notice that I am able to focus better when I study and dragging myself out of bed in the morning is not as difficult as it once was.

5 comments about The Magic of Thinking Big.
  1. The Magic Of Thinking Big is coming up on its 50 year anniversary, but the wisdom in its pages resonates timelessly. A lot of what is contained in this book is what some would call common sense. If you were blessed with an environment that treated this information as common sense, you are lucky. For the rest of us that read this material, we will have our thinking altered drastically. I have become aware of a gap between what is taught in textbooks and a lot of what one experiences in "the real world." That information is contained in this book. In school attitude is often touted, but seldom taught. In fact, my first thought after finishing this was "why is this stuff not taught in schools?" I know of no other book that will ease the transition from awkward adolescence to the dog-eat-dog world of adulthood better than The Magic Of Thinking Big. Oh, what could have been if I'd been handed this book when I was 12 or 13. You may have to adapt some of the dated examples and tips on dress to your situation, but by and large these principles will help you live a better life. I recommend this book to anyone who is sick of the status quo, wants to move up the corporate ladder, or just wants some understanding in how the world works. One of the most helpful books I have ever read, period.

Also, a lot of people have contrasted this book to Dale Carnegie's How To Win Friends... For what it's worth, I feel that each book has its place and that different personalities will relate to one book better than the other. For my part, I found Magic Of Thinking Big more helpful and easier to read than Carnegie's book. That's not to demean How To Win Friends... because I know people who have been drastically changed by that book, too. Both books have proven helpful to many people. That doesn't mean that one is better or worse than the other, they're just like vanilla and chocolate ice cream; two different flavors of the same stuff.

  2. Second only to the Bible in changing my life from the inside out. Schwartz taught me how to smile- literally.

  3. This excellent book on audio could be helpful to everybody who wants something more out of life. It's great listening in the car while commuting - I've listened to each of the 4 CDs about 5 times now, and will listen to it regularly for as long as I have it. If you REALLY want to improve yourself, you should buy it and listen to it. If you just want to be an average person, then don't buy it.

  4. The Magic of Thinking BIG by David J. Schwartz is a well-respected self-development classic. Written in the 1950's it still makes good common sense today. The practical things in life don't change much with time - like the basic principles for achieving success and living up to your full potential.

My copy of The Magic of Thinking Big has yellowed pages, sticky notes all over it, pink highlighted sentences on almost every page and yet, every time I take it down from shelf it's like opening a new wealth of information. I even remember exactly when and where I bought it. To me, that says a lot about the importance this book has had on my personal and professional self-development life.

In fact, I listened to the CD last night to help get me ready for writing this review and I took four pages of notes. One thing I've found with the classic self-development materials, every time I read or listen to them for the second, fifth or even tenth time I found something new I'd never read or heard before.

A really good empowering book/tape/CD/DVD should be read, listened to, watched and appreciated more than once. Every time we revisit a classic, we are in a different emotional and physical place than the first or second time we read, listened or watched it. It's like as we grow and evolve, so do the materials in the book.

That's how I felt about listening to The Magic of Thinking BIG by David J. Schwartz last night. I heard things I swear weren't there before. The words in the book hadn't changed, I had. The human mind is a powerful success and self-development tool and that's exactly the powerful premise of this book.

According to David J. Schwartz, it's really quite simple - if you want more out of your life, than think bigger. What makes this book a self-development/success classic? The success principles that have proven workable and viable for over fifty years and, are still true today: To make it big in life, you can't settle for small thinking.

Your life today is a reflection of how BIG you're allowing yourself to think, dream and plan. Dr. Schwartz guides you through The Magic of Thinking Big but the rest is up to you.

I highly recommend this book for your success/self-development library. I wish for you that your copy becomes dog-eared and yellowed. When you take to heart the concepts in this book, your life will be BIGGER than ever.

  5. For a book that is nearly 50 years old, the formula behind David J. Schwartz's "The Magic of Thinking Big" is great for any person who is struggling to get over the frustrations of being stuck in a rut and wanting to step up to the plate and take a chance.

Schwartz's words are not new. You can hear very similar themes from authors past and present, like Dale Carnegie, Brian Tracy, and Tony Robbins. But if the words aren't resonating from other authors, the delivery in "The Magic of Thinking Big" gives you simple and easy steps to follow to get you to think big things, and then do big things.

Everyone knows we "should relax", but, really, how can we do that at times when life feels difficult and chaotic? This work provides the EXPERIENCE of being able make a difference in our lives. If we learn we can quiet ourselves a little bit, that opens up the possibility that we can feel a little more peaceful, think a little more clearly, and begin to heal ourselves and our communities.

Here is the model Dr. Gordon and people trained by him have used around the world -- with people facing chronic illness and cancer; the 52 children in the yellow school bus that careened to the edge of the collapsing Minneapolis bridge; survivors of Hurricane Katrina; 9/11 firefighters and their families; stressed out nurses and physicians; shell-shocked young breast feeding mothers in a war zone; victims of Apartheid; war-traumatized children; Palestinians and Israelis in groups together; orphaned girls; former prisoners; people who have lived through torture; child soldiers from Mozambique; professionals who care for traumatized populations; and now, soldiers and soon civilians with trauma from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Dr. Jim Gordon is a highly-respected Harvard educated physician and clinical professor in the departments of psychiatry and family medicine at the Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington D.C.

"Unstuck" is richly and authentically written. You can hear Jim's incredibly kind voice and generosity of spirit and compassion and open heartedness and the best of well-wishes for your well-being.

Here in California with the wild fires raging, we ponder, "What would I take with me if a fire drew near." For me, Jim's book and the CDs from trainings with him would certainly be in my duffel.

  4. before taking any med's for your depression
read this book it will help you
decide what is right and wrong.

    great book
    great author

  5. This is an excellent book; well structured, easy read, with a plan anyone can follow. Each section build on the other. He explains the why and wherefore and then give a Rx at the end of each chapter. This process can used by itself or,in connection with your peronal medical professionals.

I particularly like the alternatives methods which he explains,in depth,so that a person can make their own informed choices. Personally, I am a vitamin and mineral advocate, but I know many who are quite pleased with herbal remedies.

It takes courage to buck the system and I am thrilled to see MD's starting to open the door to alternative ways. I have worked in hospitals for years and have seen the other side of the drug industry. They do just as much harm as they do good,in my opinion, and I think it takes courage to stand up and lead the way to safer health care.

It is definately on my reading and referral list to my clients as well as fellow medical professionals.

  1. Don't get me wrong--Mystery is a pioneer, definitely knows his stuff, and has great insights into the art and the structure of pickup. However, I found this book's presentation to be awkward, somewhat difficult to read, with many forward references to topics not yet covered. There are many gems inside that are well worth discovering, but, due to the disorganization, I would recommend some other book for beginners (perhaps Magic Bullets by Savoy). Then come back and read this one once you've gotten the basics down.

  2. I learned of Mystery after reading the very excellent "The Game" by Neil Strauss which delves into how Strauss penetrated the society of pickup artists. This book on attracting and scoring with women has it fine points on body language, treating yourself as the prize instead of the woman to whom you're attracted, and how seeming uninterested is better than telling a woman up front you're attracted to her.

On the downside, the book reads like a thick military instruction manual full of unneccessary jargon (i.e. IOIs, DHV, and AFCs sometimes had me saying WFT?). Reading it once would not be sufficient. You'd have to read it over and over again to grasp what it's saying and would probably need a bit of video support to help you. It relies on sweeping assumptions that most women think alike. (I wondered how his material would work in the hood or in a foreign country where customs and culture are different than ours.) Also, it doesn't address how very unattractive men can better themselves. I don't care how much material you use, if you're butt ugly and broke you will be shut down. Finally, it doesn't address what to do when the image you're portraying doesn't match your reality. What if you drive a Pinto? What if you live in a trailer? What if the first thing she asks you is where you live and what you drive?

Bottom line: I do believe the material in this book can dramatically increase your chances of meeting beautiful women and having sex with them. If that's what you're looking for, buy and study this book.

  3. Hey, he has proof it works. And you game can never be too sharp.

  4. This book was decent. I like some of the techniques, such as learning how to tell stories effectively, body language, establishing an identity, being interesting, etc. But, I can tell this is directed towards socially inept types, guys that have zero social skills. If you are a confident MAN, with a life that you are passionate about, you should do fine with women.

But most of the people that read PUA material dont want to hear that. They want the quick fix . They wanna learn techniques, or the latest opener to help them "score" with a women. Do you really think in order to get the girl, you must DHV and then NEG her, while simutaneously charming her friends? The game really isnt that serious. There are so many easier ways to meet women, the best way being through a mutual friend.

However, with all that being said, I think this book is worth the read. It has good information on social dynamics and on cold approaching. The read can get kinda dry and informative, like reading a scientific journal on rainforest plants. Also, its kinda complicated, because he has so many terms to learn. Still, it can help you become a better improv speaker, as well as approaching strangers effectively.

  5. Now that the word is out, is this book worth buying? A year ago, I felt so. Like many others, I bought it with the intent of discovering the secret formula to meeting new people, especially those I don't normally approach.
The Mystery Method (MM) outlines beautifully the Attraction, the Comfort and the Seduction and stresses you have to practice them in that order. If done correctly, the 'Target', as she is called, will not know she is being picked up. The nightclub setting scenarios are only good if you happen to be a bar-fly. While Mystery, no doubt, experienced numerous rejections and learned through trial and error what worked, the only value MM has now is it's an entertaining read.
Presently, I can vouch that MM will make you a better friend, coworker, and even more interesting to those you don't know, but it won't help you find love. There's no secret formula for that. When you meet someone, there's either an instant connection or there isn't.
Read or listen to it for entertainment value only, but don't take it too seriously.

  1. Joel has truly helped me look deep inside myself and has shown me to live a better life by becoming a better me. His book is enlightening and uplifting. Thank you, Joel.

  2. Joel is a master at keeping things simple and practical for the everyday person. His approach with real life examples makes his message clear and to the point. You don't have to have a Harvard degree to enjoy and make good use of his advice.

  3. Everyone has their opinion. That's what makes life great. My 2 cents is that I have found Joel's books inspirational and have a positive feel to it. At the end of the day, that's what we are all looking for. Something positive. Value, Validation, Acceptance, Worth, Happiness...are just some of the things we look for in our journey or path in life. Not one person is the same. So if you can get something positive from this book, maybe even pass it on, this world would be a better place. With all the turmoil that the world is going through, we should look within ourselves to find a touchstone for peace. Tools like Joel's books help with this matter. You can improve yourself positively, even 1% towards the positive is still a great thing. So take what works best for you. Get rid of the rest. Even Bruce Lee said that, right? This book is a great follow up of his original book. It helps give the reader insight in how to improve ourselves, so that we can be a more positive influence towards ourselves and others. Let's not make life complicated. The answer you seek is very simple.

  4. His approach is very unbiblical. Good writing for a secular writer, but not for a church pastor. I would not recommend it to my friends.

  5. I thought this book was so insightful and beautifully written. Joel has such a way of communicating. I am reestablishing my Faith and he has really helped me get back on track. As a survivor of abuse, this brought hope into my life.

  1. Probably my favorite self-help book of all time. Such valuable information
...no doubt 'if you think you can, you can.' The power of our minds is incredible and this book clearly explains it. But it is Living The Secret Everyday: My Secret Workbook that is the practical and 'doing' version of its important principles. It has been life-changing for me as it keeps my focused on what I want and on track. Don't read one without the other.

  2. "Think and Grow Rich", as is "The Law of Success" by Napoleon Hill, are the grandfather of all self-help books. No other self-help book contains the depth and wealth of information "Think and Grow Rich" and "The Law of Success" contain. If you buy "Think and Grow Rich" you should also buy How to Win Friends and Influence People. These two books together will give you all the life tools you need to truly be successful.

  3. This book is simply put AWESOME!! This really is in my opinion the best book out there on self-help and changing your life for the better! I highly, highly recommend this book to anyone willing to live a more richer and abundant life. In all simpleness, once you read this book, your life will never be the same! :)

  4. I agree with all the other reviewers that this is the grandfather of all books on personal transformation on how to develop a positive attitude and create your own life. Follow this book up with the workbook Living The Secret Everyday: My Secret Workbook and you too will transform your life to the one you want.

  5. The book title tells that it is about making money getting rich. that's true it covers a lot of topics on making money. But it reveals far more than how to get rich. That's why it becomes a great classic.

This book teaches practical ways to success in all aspects of life. Through this book you can find many timeless wisdom and useful tips on how to train your mind toward success. Beyond making money, detailed tips can be found on how to start business, get a job, succeed in career, gain leadership skills, improve relationships, manage people/assets, stay healthy, etc.

It is one of a few books worth reading over and over. I also got the MP3 audio book to play on my half-hour commute.
