5 comments about Curious George and the Birthday Surprise (Curious George).
  1. These were used as favors for my son's 5th birthday party. I added a little sticker inside to thank everyone for coming. It's a great story, a familiar and cuious monkey and it even includes some fun games in the back. Many parents thanked me for encouraging their kids to read and most of all for not giving junk and candy.

  2. I recently purchased this book to read at my son's first birthday party....What a cute book.....soft cover....they loved the story!

  3. The Curious George series of books is a wonderful addition to any youngster's library as the stories are brief, beautifully illustrated in vibrant colors, and the plot is simple and easy for young ones to understand. In this book, Curious George gets all excited over a birthday party, and wonders who its for? There are many fun parts as in when George decides to help frost the cake, and what he does with a mess in the kitchen. The activities at the end of the book is an added bonus. A must-have for any Curious George fan!

  4. This story follows the same story arch of all the others: Man with the yellow hat leaves George alone (will he never learn?), George inadvertently creates a disaster, and all works out in the end. My four year old loves Curious George and enjoyed a story with a birthday theme.

  5. Wonderful story! Perfect for the Curious George Birthday Party! All the guests loved it!

5 comments about Learning from the Heart: Lessons on Living, Loving, and Listening.
  1. If only the majority of the human BEINGS would learn, practice and listen as it is shared in the book, what an awesome world we would experience!

  2. Daniel Gottlieb's LETTERS TO SAM was one of the best
books that I've read over the past few years . . . so when I
saw that the author came out with something new, LEARNING
FROM THE HEART, I rushed to get hold of it.

And was I ever glad that I did . . . I was hooked after
just seeing the cover and the subtitle: LESSONS ON
LIVING, LOVING AND LISTENING . . . Gottlieb, a practicing
psychologist, presents this information via short
essays on a wide variety of topics . . . best of all,
he brings in his own personal experiences and openly
    shares them.

I especially liked his view about not always having to be
    best in everything:
    * I've ended up feeling a great deal of gratitude for my failures. Of
course, there are people who don't believe me when I tell them
I belong in the last seat in the second row. They challenge my position
by reminding me of books I have written and the many wonderful
accomplishments I've been fortunate to achieve. Over the years I have
learned that there are some aspects of my humanity--perhaps my
kindness and my ability to understand others--that probably belong
in the first row. But there are many other aspects of Gottlieb that belong
in the last row--technical skills, attention span, and
    memory (to name a few).

Gottlieb also got me thinking about how good life can be--and is--when
he related this account of a friend's visit:
    * I do believe in coincidence, and I was involved in a quite a fortunate one
when my friend Amy came over to visit just two days before that phone call.
At one point, she asked if I believed in heaven. Without giving it any thought,
I said, "Yes. You're in it right now."

I saw the dazed look on her face that I often see when I make proclamations,
so I went on: "What were the chances of that sperm fertilizing that egg and
producing your life? And what were the chances that you would have lived all
the years you have lived in relative good health? And what were the odds that
you would have so many people in your life whom you love and who care
about you? And what were the possibilities that you could look out of almost
any window and see the beauty of nature? Heaven? You bet."

Of course, my version of heaven is not the perfect one we read about in
mythology or that many believe in. There is great pain and suffering and loss
in this particular heaven. But deep inside, most know it-heaven, life-is
precious. It just takes some careful noticing.

Lastly, the author had me laughing when I read passages such as this
    one:
    * Even trauma like my accident carries good news and bad news. I suffer,
still get frustrated and sometimes depressed, and yet there is good news
    about being a quadriplegic.

The good news about being quadriplegic?

Well, first, there is the obvious--great parking spaces.

Then, think shoes. I don't have to spend a fortune on comfortable shoes,
and they last as long as I want them to.

But the great news about quadriplegic is that I don't have to get up to pee in
the middle of the night. So, in the middle of the night tonight, when you are
sitting or standing. I'll be sleeping. (And they say I have special needs!)

On a serious note, this disability has helped me become the man I am. The
image I have carried for nearly thirty years is that when my neck broke, my
soul began to breathe. Because of my differentness, I have not been
intimidated by my need to be like everyone else. I might not have become
the man I am today were it not for this trauma.

After reading LEARNING FROM THE HEART, you'll feel like you know
Daniel Gottlieb much better . . . in fact, in reading it, I thought I was
having a one-on-conversation with him that made me realize that
if I was ever in need of a therapist, I'd certainly want to seek him out.

  3. Dan Gottleib, host of Voices in the Family and author of this book is a true inspiration no matter who you are, what you do or think. I can't recommend this book or advocate listening to his show enough. Voices in the Family.
    [...]

  4. i loved it, and think it is a useful read for anyone who needs a reminder of what is important in life.

  5. Wow, what a moving and beautifully written book! Recommended for anyone living with a chronic illness or condition, and their caretakers. A perfect book to share and re-read. Loved it!

5 comments about Bikram's Beginning Yoga Class (Second Edtion).
  1. This is the best exercise/health book I have ever purchased. Well illustrated and written. If you do Bikram Yoga this is a definite book to have.

  2. After taking Bikram Yoga classes for five months, I bought this book, and my practice will never be the same! Bikram breaks down every pose, through pictures and words, allowing you to truly understand what the body should look like and how it should feel in each pose. Even better, he also shows you through words and pictures how the body shouldn't look, allowing you to know what you are doing wrong. I would recommened this book to any Bikram Yogi, as well as anyone who is interested in a great work out for not only your body, but for your mind as well.

  3. This is a great book for Bikram lovers! Nice pictures of all the postures in his beginning series. Also dicusses the right way and the realistic way of doing the poses. "26 postures, 2 breathing exercises, every day!" Bikram created this sequence with his teacher Bishnu Gosh after Bikram blew out a knee in a weightlifting accident. Doing this sequence healed his knee without needing the surgery the doctors where recomending. I love the Bikram quote "you can [...] with the Gods, but you cannot [...] with the knees!" Lots of people experience this truth for themselves when they jump into a yoga practice with a little to much gusto:)

  4. I bought the CDs set for 24 dollars becuase I thought there would be some videos that would help me to make perfect postures but to my surprise the CDs are just Audio. I mean what the heck??? How can one get the idea of what Bikram is blabering???? Total wastage of the money and CD don't even work properly if you try to copy them to your disc. How sad and pathetic...

  5. The style is a bit annoying to read but the explanation of poses along with the (extremely dated) photos is very helpful especially for beginners.

I read the book through once... then realized that it is broken up into 2 parts -- for each pose. The top portion is for advanced students who have a general idea of the poses. The bottom portion is for complete beginners. Although Bikram writes in the book that someone who has never taken a class can follow the book, I would highly disagree with that. I think you need to have gone to a few classes to get a general idea of the flow, then you can read about each poses and tips to get a deeper stretch/proper form.

I wish they would have redone the photos for the updated copy. Now that I have read through it once, I find that I go back to it for reference for some of the poses I find more challenging. I would highly recommend this book.

5 comments about Living Sober.
  1. This is a really good book for anyone starting out on their alcohol free life. It's easy to read and has some humor too. I recommend this book.

  2. A great book for people in recovery, especially early recovery. You can purchase them in book stores, too, but with free shipping on certain Amazon purchases, why not have it delivered to your door?

  3. this is an easy to understand, very practical book, especially for those in early recovery. It gives the reader concrete steps, advice, tips for staying clean when a craving to use alcohol or drugs appear.

this book also makes a great gift to give others who struggle with drug issues, without being judgemental.

  4. This is an AA book addressed not to members but to people who are in deep trouble with alcohol and don't know where to turn.

Long before I joined AA, my sister gave me this book (hint, hint). I was a little huffy about it at first; all I knew about AA was that you could never drink again.

I expected preachiness. And at the time I thought I was a disgusting female drunk and I expected to be treated as such in the book. But from the beginning, the tone of the book was so kind that it made me less afraid of AA.

I know some reviewers found it simplistic, but given that its audience was composed largely of practicing alcoholics, I think it was just right.

I know that this is by far the most useful book I've read for people who are pretty sure their drinking is not normal, but are still afraid to seek help.

I can't recommend it highly enough.

  5. Thank you so much for this wonderful book. We are a women's sober living home in the Inland Empire and our group of women here at My Daughter's House has proudly added this to our library. Anyone in recovery will benefit from this book. We have shared this book with other community members in our Redlands / Mentone area and they have all come away with insight.

5 comments about How to Make People Like You in 90 Seconds or Less.
  1. This book help me to change some patterns in talking to people and reading the people. It is well written, no 'water' and up to the point with good examples.

  2. Nicholas is a genius. This book is outstanding and the information is easy to follow. I work in sales and I can tell you that I have tried many of his methods. They work and I am making more money. This should be a required read for all politicians, salespeople, management and entrepreneurs. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

    Chuck
    Denver, CO

  3. When you meet someone, look 'em in the eye and give 'em a firm handshake because everyone knows that making a good first impression is important. Former fashion photographer Nicholas Boothman explains why - and a whole lot more - in this fascinating look at how people make connections. Like most people, you probably establish immediate rapport with certain individuals and don't seem to have anything in common with others. If you've wondered why, the author explains the components of communication and offers specific techniques you can employ to create connections quickly. The fun part is that after you've finished the book, you can try your newly acquired skills on just about anyone in any situation. Though some people are naturals, for most becoming a skilled conversationalist takes a lot of practice. getAbstract believes that almost everyone will find useful information and practical advice in Boothman's book. At the very least, he gives you plenty to discuss.

  4. Great manuel for those who make their living selling but not excluded to everyone who just wants to interact in their daily lives. I found that I did many things naturally but this is a great refresher and a great way to hone my people skills....A MUST BUY!!!!!

    Bill-Ft. Worth,TX.

  5. How To Make People Like You in 90 Seconds or Less is an excellent guide to establishing fast rapport with people. In a common sense, but not always obvious approach, the author spells out in simple terms the body language and meeting acknowledgment that will engage new acquaintances. This is a fast read. It gives the reader the potential to leverage a first impression with positive power.
The author was recently interviewed on television. Expect a big demand for this book, of great help to salespeople, job interviewees, and anyone who needs to make a good impression, fast.

5 comments about The Sexually Confident Wife: Connecting with Your Husband Mind Body Heart Spirit.
  1. This book is a godsend for marriages, but it can be used by singles or unmarried couples. Body dismorphia and sexual shame can ruin a relationship, and this book can be instrumental in helping a person overcome these and other marital sexual problems. Written in a very readable format, and accessible for any age person, I would highly recommend it. If you paired this book with The Sensuous Couple's (Flip Over) Guide to Seismic Oral Sex, you would light a fire in your marriage that nothing could extinguish. Buy them both together. Get healthy mentally by reading the first book, and put it into practice by using the the second book. Your husband will feel more connected to you than you ever thought possible!

  2. This book is great for building Confidence in the Woman who is unsure of herself and her sex life. GREAT BOOK. It touches on many different issues in an informative, and fun way thats not embarrassing. I totally recommend!

  3. This book covers all areas of a wife's sexuality and pulls no punches. Frank and explicit yet does not cross the line of offence or makes the average woman uncomfortable with suggestions or ideas. I have upcoming weddings and have purchased it for the brides as a wedding gift. However I am a 47 year old with two grown children and have been divorced and still find her thoughts and ideas informative, intriguing and useful.

  4. I love this book and think that every married woman should read it. One of the best self help books I have ever read!

  5. I had intended on purchasing this book for my niece who will soon be married for the first time. I realized in the first chapter that the book was written for women with sexual trauma in their past. That was not my niece's experience so I did not think it would benifit her to hear all of those sad, traumatic details of other peoples lives. I also did not like that the author referred to her own sexual experiences with her husband. That was too much information for me. I would have preferred that those stories could have been shared in the third person so that I didn't have images of a specific couple in mind. I'm sure that this book will be a great benifit for the right women, however, it was not what I had in mind when I purchased it. I decided to sell the book back to Amazon.

5 comments about The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari: A Fable About Fulfilling Your Dreams & Reaching Your Destiny.
  1. International best-seller, "The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari" is a short fable or story about a high powered lawyer who suffers a personal loss and embarks on a life of workaholism, materialism and emptiness. When he suffers a life threatening heart attack he determines to put the essential luxuries of purpose, peace and happiness back into his life. He travels to the Himalayas and spends time with the Sivana monks, who teach him wisdom of life.

This book is chock full of simple habits and rituals to include in one's life to nurture your body, mind and spirit. The advice within is compellingly framed and concise, making use of symbolism to remember the key concepts.

Picture the following sequence. What can this mean?

You are sitting in a wondrous, beautiful flower garden. In the middle there is a red, six story lighthouse. Suddenly, there is a creaking from the base of the lighthouse and out comes a 290lb Japanese sumo wrestler. He is wearing a simple, pink wire cable sheath. The sumo wrestler spots a shiny stopwatch. He picks it up and immediately falls to the ground. It appears that he has taken his last breath, when suddenly he comes back to life. He then gets up and looks over at a beautiful group of yellow roses nearby. Finally, he exits the garden by a path of beautiful diamonds...

How can you draw upon your deep reservoir of mental fortitude and inner strength that you possess? As most accomplished people know, never stop learning and actively expand your wisdom about life. As many great leaders do each and every day, take time out for reflection, including self-reflection. To not do so is akin to being too busy driving to put gas in your (beautiful) car (you). Awaken with the sun and cultivate a positive mindset and an attitude of gratefulness. Savor the present. Make music an integral part of your life. Build your character by taking specific actions. Simplify your life as much as you can for enhanced peace of mind. Thus, you will leave time for the things that matter most. Specifically, those things that will make the most difference in the long run. Always cultivate your virtues of industry, compassion, humility, patience, honesty and last but not least, courage.

This little gem of a book is inexpensive. It's entertaining. It's a quick read. It will be three hours of your valuable time very well spent. You might learn nothing new. Or, perhaps you will see your life more clearly than ever before. Perhaps you will be pleasantly surprised and this book will unexpectedly improve the quality of your life.

  2. I Had previously read the book and I loved it so much that I bought it from Amazon.com. It is an excellent book to have on your night table and a tool to implement good things into your life. Certainly brings you enlightment and help to improve your life!

  3. Its amazing that all of these books say the same thing the Bible says but people would rather trust a human for advice than their maker. I give this book 4 stars because it does follow the Bible. It may sound off the wall to some but that would depend on their desperation.

  4. If you ever need to read a self-help book, you only need to read this one.

  5. I got 1/2 way through the book and loved it. However, my puppy decided to take it from my nightstand and eat it as an appetizer. So I never got to finish it.

5 comments about The Bipolar Workbook: Tools for Controlling Your Mood Swings.
  1. This is an outstanding tool for anyone who is diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Each exercise provides insight into the patterns and actions caused by the disease. This knowledge is the true value of this book. Here is a book that actually provides tools to recognize symptoms and control them. This is power over the disease and the real win for a patient. A final positive is that the completed workbook is itself a reference tool of personal triggers, disease patterns and treatment therapies. I strongly recommend this to anyone who is diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

  2. This book is so awesome for someone who has been newly diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. It breaks down the disorder into manageable chunks that make it easier to deal with. It saved me! I am so much more in control now that I have the tools to be so.

  3. In my opinion, this book doesn't apply for people with bipolar II at all. I found it somewhat insulting. Too me it came across like 'never second guess your Dr, he knows better than you', or 'oh yes, Mom, you are right, I didn't take my meds yesterday, sorry for being irritable, and thanks for taking such good care of me'.

For most people with Bipolar II one of the main problems is not to have a reference point, or the inability to 'take up your spot in the universe', as my yoga teacher puts it. In my case, I often suffer from good old plain overstimulation (too many people, too much commotion, too loud, too bright, unpleasant smells, low pain tolerance, food that is too spicy). The 21st century is all about overstimulation. I was hoping for insights on how to set boundaries without braking bridges, on how to embrace bipolar as a challenge to grow other than just look at it as a nuisance. You won't find any help with that in this book.

    A big disappointment!

  4. Whether you are suffering from Bipolar disorder or knows someone who does, this book is a must have.

  5. The bipolar workbook has helped me cope with having bipolar disorder. I highly recommend anyone to read it. Anyone who knows someone that has bipolar..this book is the way to go. Im soo much better without meds.

5 comments about Love, Medicine and Miracles: Lessons Learned about Self-Healing from a Surgeon's Experience with Exceptional Patients.
  1. 12+ years ago when my surgeon told me I had breast cancer (my second bout with cancer), she gave me this book. Not only did it help me develop, sustain and exude a positive attitude during my entire treatment phase, but it made me a touchstone for anyone else who was diagnosed with cancer and contacted me. Since that time, whenever someone that is near and dear to me, someone that I truly love and want to do something positive for when they are diagnosed with cancer, I give them a copy of this book. Not one of them has died to date. My most recent gift of the book has been to my husband and he is visibly changing his attitude as he reads it.

  2. You Must Read This If You Have Cancer or Know Anyone Who Does... I titled this review with those words becuase I believe that statement to be as simple a truth I can make it. The book offers a powerful insight into the cause and treatment of cancer from one of the worlds leading authorities, as well as accounting his own journey to that understanding. The wisdom from the author is profound as it discuses both the medical understanding and approach to cancer as well as the humanistic and natural approach of mind-body medicine. It offers more than hope, it offers a true solution to those who have been diagnosed with cancer. Read it - it's as simple as that!

  3. I bought this book and a few tapes by Bernie Siegel when I had cancer about 18 years ago. I found the book to be right on the money. I have since given this book to many of my friends and associates over the years who were diagnosed with cancer.

  4. As a medical student, this book couldn't have arrived at a better time! While I agree with some of the more negative reviews that this might encourage someone with chronic illness to feel like they/their attitudes "caused the disease" on their own, this book can also be mind-opening. If we all looked as disease as merely an unmet need manifesting itself, we would treat ourselves much differently. Our illnesses might not always require a chemical drug to mask the needs that are weakening us in the first place. I am encouraging my classmates to read this and see for themselves how deciding "I don't need this _______________ in my life" can change their well-being as it did mine!

  5. There is little I can say that hasn't been said. This is a wonderful book. I've given it to many friends and friends of friends who were facing serious illness. All of them have gone out of their way to thank me and commented on how helpful they found the book. The author neither says nor implies that illness is someone's *fault.* He merely talks about the psychological part of fighting illness. There is no blame in illness or in its outcome.

5 comments about The Grief Recovery Handbook : The Action Program for Moving Beyond Death Divorce, and Other Losses.
  1. The Grief Recovery Handbook: A Step-By-Step Program for Moving Beyond Loss The service from the provider was excellent. I wanted only the original because I have my own copy. This is helping numerous people 3000 miles across trhe country, thanks to you.

  2. This is a hopeful book that can help you work through your grief even if it is a death, divorce, job loss, or other major loss. If you are over 40 there is a 1 in 3 chance someone close to you will have died during that year. Our society celebrates life, and de-emphasizes grief and the death of our loved ones. Well meaning people say things like this was meant to be, they are out of pain now, and you will find someone else.

Your situation is unique. Even if you find someone with what is on the surface a similar loss, for example, the loss of a child, your situation is dramatically different than their situation and your recovery will be equally as unique. This book offers ideas different than keep yourself busy, and life goes on, it addresses how you feel and how to work through your feelings. I would recommend this book those who have lost.

  3. I have received many books on grief since the sudden death (by suicide) of my 23 year old son in 2007. THIS BOOK IS EXCELLENT and has been the most helpful book to me!

Please consider getting this book - if not for yourself, than for someone you may know who is dealing with grief as a result of ANY loss. My mom died when I was 12 years old, and my father's way of "handling" his grief was to become engaged one month later to a woman that he only knew for five days. He thought that he had to find a new mom for my younger sisters and me. We were never allowed to speak of our mother! My father became an alcoholic, and later became estranged from all of us. These actions still impact my sisters and me - decades later.

Through this book, I have learned not to "rush" through my grief. It has literally been a life-saver to me.

  4. The death of my loved one only happened 12 days ago. My heart is broken and I feel like I'm walking around with a figurative wound and all my insides figuratively bleeding out of me at every moment, the emotional pain is so great. But I know intellectually that I could not be frozen in time and sadness for the rest of my life. Easier said than done - - but this book is helping me in the process of separating saying goodbye to my loved one and completing my grieving - from still loving and remembering my loved one all the time. All while being able to still take comfort in my religious belief that we will be together again someday. This book is very respectful of that no matter what your beliefs or non-beliefs, etc.. It's not an easy fix - but this will give you the tools to use and remember the rest of your life when you do have sad moments and other losses. I still have to put things away and have been avoiding washing certain things - and that will be very painful - but I at least know what I am going through is normal and not something to be hidden or ignored or suffered in silence.

I only wish I could have read this book when I went off to college - it would have prepared me to handle so many things in life better - what a disservice we do to young people by only teaching them about acquiring things in life - not the inevitable losses that will occur as well - excellent point by the authors.

  5. This is a fabulous book. I have recommended it to many during their time of grief, not only from death but also from divorce and loss.
