  1. I LOVE this kit. It is so elegant and fun. It is inspiring and bright... I am such a huge fan of Louise Hay that she can do nothing wrong in my eyes. This is so like her to come up with something so cheerful and delightful. It makes a great gift too...

  2. This is a wonderful product, little kit! It is simple, easy and fun! It comes with a little magnet board and lots of little magnet words, a book, some cards and a cd! What a great complete kit for the price!!!

  3. I had bought one for myself & liked it so much just ordered 2 more as gifts

  4. I love the kit, but was disappointed to find out that the affirmation cd was exactly the same one that comes with the "I can do it" book, which I already had and is a great cd. So I was wanting something different than I already had. Louise Hays items are great, but just a bit repetitive. The cards are wonderful and overall it is a great kit!!!

  5. I really enjoy Louise Hay's products and thoughts. This kit is a tremendous way to incorporate positive affirmations into your everyday on the go life!

  1. This product was great. I love the text in the book. It is interesting and it is placed in an easy to understand format. The text is relatable to the society and I would definitly suggest this book to someone else!

  2. I was assigned readings from this book for my Biopsychosocial aspects of addictions class in graduate school for counseling. Compared to other textbooks, it is a relatively easy read, and there's a great deal of helpful information contained in it. My only complaints for the book thus far are that the chapters on physiology and anatomy include a great deal of information that assumes the reader already has a basis of knowledge in anatomy, biology, and physiology and certain terms aren't defined in context. Also, the book does not contain a great deal of information on "club drugs" such as ecstasy, ketamine, PCP, etc.

  3. The book "Drugs,Society, and Human Behavior" was purchased online from Amazon.Com at a much reduced price from the College bookstore price. The transaction was hassle free and delivery in a very timely fashion. I would recommed this site as a great resource for purchases.

5 comments about The Power of Your Subconscious Mind (Revised).
  1. I have always been curious about the subconscious mind and this book explained it so clearly. It just makes such perfect sense and I love the simplicity of his writing. I recommend this book to anyone even the slightest bit curious about how your mind works. Awesome read!

  2. This is an excellent book. I already had it and thought this was new because of the different cover.

  3. I am a psychologist and a 'dyed in the wool' Freudian one at that so I don't recognize "subconscious" as a legitimate name for a mind function. For me there is conscious and unconscious, the unconscious part coming into my recognition as a very legitimate, active and powerful force. The following thumnail sketch will explain.

About five years ago I had to undergo a surgical rebuilding of my right hand as the result of a condition called teno-synovitis. This disease causes rigidity and shortening of the tendons that allow the hand to grasp and relax in its healthy state. Rather than operate normally both my right and left hands had closed into tight fists. A long surgery had cut and freed the tendons of my right hand so that eventually I regained function once again. Then the time came for surgery on my left hand. That night before the operation I sat in front of a log fire and sipped a glass of red wine as I contemplated the ordeal that lay ahead. The wine and the fire had a soporofic effect and I fell asleep. When I awoke in a short while my left hand for whom the surgery was scheduled was as free and flexible as the day I was born. And it still is so.

I hadn't asked for this to happen and I certainly didn't recite any prayer. I am thoroughly appalled at the perfidy of religion in all its forms and I am quick to identify and shun any attempt to rope me into its incredulous beliefs.

But what's going on here??? Something incredible happened that I do not understand. I'm no mental slouch and if I don't know neither do I know, within scientific certainty, anyone who does. But if Joseph Murphy wants to tell me what works for him . . . I'll listen. He's welcome to his religious point of view but I'm not sure that's what he's proffering. I'm sure enough of my own mental (conscious) prowess to read what he has to say and pick out what I want. You never know. I might, at least, find a point of reference.

  4. In an attempt to make his book accessible to the masses, Dr. Murphy has taken a useful truth that contemplatives throughout history have known for centuries and diluted it and dumbed it down to the point that it looses much of its believability. For example, on page 22, he relates a story in which a man says, he would, "...give his right arm" to see his daughter healed from her arthritis and psoriasis. He then goes on to say that, "one day" the family got into an automobile accident in which the man lost his arm, but from that point on the daughter's medical problems disappeared. Oh come on! I know an urban legend when I hear one! If your going to make a wild claim like that, you need to back it up with specific documentation, something Dr. Murphy fails to do. Another example of an extraordinary claim which he fails to back up is on page 19 where he states, "Your subjective mind can leave your body, travel to distant lands and bring back information that is often of the most exact and truthful character." A claim like that needs to be thoroughly backed up by pages of specific, documented accounts, not just thrown in to be believed without a challenge! I've studied at length the results of the CIA funded SRI study on remote viewing and I can tell you that there is no evidence whatsoever that such a thing is in any way possible! Another problem I have with the book is it's insistance on using Christian references and biblical verses as proof of the doctor's claims. While he does this in a more deistic fashion than mainstream Christianity, it still becomes an unwanted and unnecessary distraction. He also has a rather unique definition of prayer which he uses often when a more accurate word for what he proposes would be meditation or self-hypnosis. He also mentions nothing about the corresponding brainwave states - in this case alpha and theta - which relate to the proper mental state for self-healing. Finally, he looses what little credibility he has left with his use of infomercial-like "carny" sales technics. Phrases like, "Get the promotion you want...", and Miracles will happen to you, too..." make the book sound more like a Robert Tilton fundamentalist pep rally than a useful strategy for improving your life. If you're interested in this subject, I would recommend any of Ken Wilber's books, particularly, "The Simple Feeling of Being". Ken's books are extremely useful and don't insult your intelligence like Dr. Murphy's does.

  5. I thought the ideas in this book were very good. The advice is solid and can help anyone overcome most challenges that life may hand them. The only item I found disappointing was the disclaimer near the front of the book that talks about the book not representing the values of today because it was a product of its time. I believe the book was written over 40 years ago. In my mind this book is a classic with the insight it gives.

  1. Kitchen Table Wisdom: Stories That Heal
I was given a copy of this book by a colleague many years ago. I only recently read it for the first time, and I now realize what a wonderful gift I received. I know I will reread this book and refer to it many times. The subtitle explains it: "Stories That Heal." I cannot imagine that anyone reading this book thoughtfully would not be deeply rewarded for the time spent. I very rarely have read something that I would recommend to EVERYBODY, but this is one book I WILL recommend to everybody. Epiphany, anyone? File under "Guide for Living Well."

  2. This is one of the most incrediblely healing books you will ever read. You will find yourself refering to it and giving it to friends (like I did) because it is so theraputic. A must read if you are a self-aware person.

  3. Although the title sounds simplistic, the contents of this book are
profound. It is a book of inspirational true stories, written by a most perceptive physician/counselor about the wisdom she has gleaned about life and death through her experiences with patients. Each chapter is a new story, and they open windows in our minds and hearts. One of the finest books I have read in years.

  4. Kitchen Table Wisdom 10th Anniversary

I ordered 2 "New" Kitchen Table Wisdom books to be given as gifts. The cover of one of them was crooked and did not cover the first page. The book was simply not made right. I was not allowed to exchange it for another, just send it back and charged a bit to do that.
It turned out all right because I found out another way (not Amazon) to get books at discount and got the 2nd one right away.

  5. I really enjoyed reading this book and was impressed with the positive attitude and hopeful outlook under very difficult circumstances.

5 comments about One Breath at a Time: Buddhism and the Twelve Steps.
  1. As I've been going through the Steps, I have my sponsor, AA support, and many books as my guides. When I compare the steps in each of the books (Big Book, 12x12, etc.) to One Breathe at a Time, this is the one that speaks in a language I can understand, that helped me clarify my "higher power." If you have leanings toward Eastern philosophy and are somewhat put off by the Christian focus of AA, then give this one a shot. In any case, it can't hurt to have another perspective, and this guy's been through it.

  2. This was an excellent read and I would recommend it to anybody involved with a 12 step program. Taken with the 12x12 it provides some perspective of the steps, discussing them in more contemporary language. I am not a Buddhist and have no wish to become one, but find there is quite a bit of useful content in the book for anyone in recovery. I've been at this for 25 years now, with countless big book and step studies over the years. I am not a joiner or in the market for a religion, but this book does provide intriguing references to concepts in Buddhism worth pursuing. You don't necessarily need the brand name to make use of something that works. I think one aspect of particular use will be working with a concept of a higher power outside the structure of the Christian traditions. I have to disagree with the earlier reviewer - the author does address his concept of a higher power.

  3. An intriguing perspective on 12 Step programs. Having written a book about walking that fine line between compassion and codependence, I found this book insightful and inspiring. - Rita Schiano, author of Sweet Bitter Love

  4. I am a Zen Buddhist who has struggled in the past with alcohol. For personal and religious reasons, I wish to permanently quit alcohol use. I have tried in the past on my own unsuccesfully, and have recently sought help in this endeavor. I am participating in group counselling at this time. I have never really considered participating in a twelve step program as I have always been under the impression that they (AA) take a decidedly Judeo-Christian bent. This book does a fabulous job of explaining how a Buddhist can succesfully participate in such a program as well as how each of the steps can be interpreted and praciced from the Buddhist point of view. I have not joined a twelve step program as of yet, and may not, but I will definately be more open minded about the possibility after reading this book. Likewise, I have learned important techniques that I can use in my recovery now.

  5. This book does a fantastic job of demonstrating the synergies of working a 12 step program and buddhist practice. I think it would be valuable for anyone who is still uncomfortable with the Christian overtones of the 12 steps as it explains their origin and how to work them in relation to higher power of your own understanding.

5 comments about The Schwarzbein Principle: The Truth About Losing Weight, Being Healthy, and Feeling Younger.
  1. I have purchased all of Dr. Schwarbein's books related to her Schwarzbein Principle Program (SPP), each one of them giving me knowledge and encouragement that I can achieve good health of body, mind and spirit by following the simple, common-sense approach to nutrition and stress management. It is the only book of this kind that I feel makes such PERFECT SENSE. This book is not only for weight-loss, it is for every living human being who wants to be healthy. It is for you and every family member, friend and acquaintance you can recommend it to. I can't stop talking about it and I gave several books as Christmas presents this year!!
    Judy
    Ormond Beach, FL

  2. This book is an excellent owner's manual to keep the body functioning at peak levels. It doesn't take long to realize how what you eat effects the way you look, think and feel.

  3. This is an excellent program and has helped me to feel better and lose weight on a diet I can maintain. It combines the best of low carb diets with lots of vegetables and some healthy carbs like fruits and grains. This book explains her program in a clear and concise way unlike its successors. I highly recommend The Schwarzbein Principle Cookbook as well.

  4. This book has a very straightforward message. The message essentially is that too much carbohydrates, refined sugar, gluten and alcohol is the real culprits in terms of poor health/disease and weight gain and not so much meat and fat. The second message is that you need oils and that meat and fat are good sources of oil. Main idea is that man-made carbohydrates like artifical sweetners, wheat and gluten cause elevated insulin reactions and low glucagon levels which lead to storage of fat and will over time will result in insulin resistance, inflammatory reactions and autoimune disease. The book basically recommends that you eliminate refined sugar and man-made sweetners and carbohydrates and that you should increase your intake of essential oils. I am a vegetarian and lost 18 kg in 4 months essentaily following the advice in this book namely eliminating all bread, strarch, gluten, alcohol and refined sugar in my diet. I eat meat once a week but do eat lots of seeds, flaxeed oil and, tofu. The book in my opinion overemphasize the idea that you should eat animal fat and meat but do state that meat eating is not the only way to ensure adequate intake of fats, protein and oils.

  5. I actually got this for a friend - I wouldn't part with mine. What I like about this is that there's no counting. You look at your plate and understand what your body will do when you eat it. While I don't agree with everything (good luck taking away my coffee and beer), the principle is sound. Like all diet plans, take what works for you and merge it with the rest of your knowledge to create a balanced diet that works for you.

I did get a few of the later books, and got the feeling that the publisher found out there was money to be made. Not much new in the cookbooks.

5 comments about Beauty For Ashes: Receiving Emotional Healing (Revised Edition).
  1. Having been a victim of abuse Joyce is able to speak to others who have been abused on their level, not just from observation or education. She doesn't just leave the reader in the place of accepting that they have things they need to work through, but she leads them through the same steps she took by God's hand to receive that healing. I have used this book to lead a women's study group and have been wonderfully blessed to witness the changes that have come out of their applying these truths to their lives.

  2. not only it help me understand why im going through what i gone through at that time. at first i did'nt know about healing process if there is such a thing but there is. thank God for this book. as God was doing His beautiful, healing yet painful work in me this book encourage me, help me. plus i love how joyce would include her experience, her story it's very helpful!plus she's so real, honest not faking it. Thank you Lord

  3. This book has helped me tremendously. It was a real eye-opener into my personal life. Thanks Joyce for writing the things God gives you.

  4. My grandfather sent this book to me and I confess that when I first saw it, I wasn't sure it was anything I wanted to read. Emotional healing? What could *I* possibly need to be healed from? Denial is an amazing thing. Thankfully, I had nothing else to read at the moment and picked up this book. From page 1, I was captured by Meyer's ability to share her story, make light of her struggle, and give examples of God's amazing power to heal us from our wounds, whether we recognize them or not. This book took me through the whole scope of emotions. I found myself laughing, and alternately, weeping as I recognized myself in the pages and yes, even found God speaking to me through Meyer's testimony. I simply could not put it down. If you are a survivor of any type of abuse, or even if you're just trying to work on building mature, Christ-centered relationships, consider this book. You won't be sorry you did.

  5. This is a wonderful read for anyone who wants to live a Biblical life, but just can't seem to get over the hurts of abuse and betrayal. Joyce Meyer writes in her straight forward yet compassionate transparency. In this book, she takes the reader on a hope filled, "get from there to here" journey. I wish I had read this book a long time ago.

5 comments about Why Am I Still Depressed? Recognizing and Managing the Ups and Downs of Bipolar II and Soft Bipolar Disorder.
  1. Jim Phelps has provided anyone grappling with bipolar spectrum disorders (hypomania, soft bipolar, classic bipolar, et al) an invaluable book which in addition to very readable text, provides tools to monitor one's own behavior and make lasting changes. This wonderful book will undoubtedly become a classic in an area of psychiatry that is poorly understood and often ignored by intelligent and otherwise effective therapists and psychophamacologists. It serves as a perfect companion to the recently published, Break the Bipolar Cycle by Elizabeth Brondolo, which is a brilliant self-help guide, complete with easily implementable exercises for the layman (i.e. me) to "Bipolar Spectrum Disorders" (BSD). Phelps' book is especially useful from the psycho-pharmacological side in determining what your diagnosis might be and how to deal with it. Phelps is an M.D. Brondolo is a Ph.D. in Psychology (therapist). Phelps has an incredible website: [...]

I was recently diagnosed with hypomania after being in therapy for 13 years and having being prescribed antidepressants for the majority of that period. Sadly, most professionals don't acknowledge more than a few meaningless gradations in the bipolar spectrum and the term "bipolar" is so scary and brings up such horrifying & stigmatizing images of manic depressive behavior (i.e. Jamison's portrayal of herself cited a few lines below), that most would rather avoid the topic entirely, dismissing therapists and M.D.s as "crazy". One thinks -- "This is not me!". Guess again -- it might be. (for a classic book that reads like a page-turner on full-on Manic Depression, see: An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness by Kay Redfield Jamison, Professor of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University).

Most of the gradations along the "bipolar spectrum" are not even recognized in the DSM IV which is the most comprehensive guide for psychiatric professionals in making diagnoses. The whole concept of bipolar spectrum disorders is a relatively recent phenomena, having only been truly studied and understood over the last decade or so. DON'T BE SCARED AND DON'T CONTINUE TO WRECK YOUR LIFE - many hypomanics are incredibly successful professionals (see: The Hypomanic Edge: The Link Between (A Little) Craziness and (A Lot of) Success in America - John D. Gartner, which is a highly entertaining read, and uplifting, because it makes you realize that there is plenty of hope out there).

Phelps' book is a wonder for those of us who have suffered most of our lives and always thought that those closest to us giving us loving feedback were the crazy ones. It provides some easily understandable guidelines, exercises and common sense pieces of advice (good luck finding a therapist who understands what is going on with you -- after years of poor judgment and simply lying to therapists and myself, I would strongly recommend some form of Cognitive Behavior Therapy or Dialectic Behavior Therapy). Phelps and Brondolo also provide one with a framework for how to approach what you've been suffering from and how to approach your therapists and M.D.s with these issues, as many of them (the majority in my experience -- even those who understand BSD well) will not ask you many key questions or monitor key behaviors that are essential for you to get better unless you bring these things up yourself (makes one feel really great that you're spending so much $$$ on these folks).

One of the scariest things that emerges in Phelps' and Brondolo's work is that at least 50% of people who suffer from BSD have been mis-diagnosed for years (on avg 10 years) and have been on the usual array of antidepressants (Prozac, Zoloft, Lexapro, Paxil, et al). THESE ANTIDEPRESSANTS IN FACT HAVE THE TENDENCY TO BRING ON AND/OR EXACERBATE HYPOMANIC EPISODES!

PHELPS AND BRONDOLO'S WORK ARE "EASY READS", easy to browse through, and easy to pick up and start again at a new place. I am grateful for the existence of these two works (and you will be too -- and no -- no one has paid me for this review -- I'm the one who has paid dearly all these years -- and continue to pay). Best of luck.

  2. In "Why Am I Still Depressed" Dr. Phelps brings together in one place more really important information about Bipolar II, or what he refers to as Soft Bipolar, than has been done in terms that a layperson can understand. This book was recommended to my by the psychiatrist who treated me during a recent hospitalization as a "must read". It was amazing to pick up a book that described me and my eight-year journey with mental illness. Had I read the book earlier I could well have avoided the over-medication and mis-medication that I had received from my out-patient psychiatrist. Now I am much better, and I'm better equipped engage a new psychiatrist and to be a proactive consumer of psychiatric treatment including medications.

  3. The past 12 years of my life have been plagued with increasingly more severe symptoms within the depression spectrum. Even though I have worked with numerous psychiatrists and various Dr.'s and have been passionately involved in my treatment, including implementing most every holistic approach possible (I'm a Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach). However, I've recently discovered Dr. Phelps's work and due the implementation of the perspectives and research he shares my health is rapidly improving. I've passionately researched the topics of depression, self help/improvement, psychology/psychoanalysis, NLP, psychopharmacology, neurophysiology, etc. and yet Dr. Phelps's material offers a ton of new and even life saving information.

My gratitude for Dr. Phelps extends far beyond the capability of words. I've never met him because his waiting list is over a year long (possibly closer to 2), but I can assure you that he's a man of great integrity, a big heart and impressively humble.

I truly hope this helps and I wholeheartedly wish you health and happiness.

  4. This was the second book I bought on the subject after my husband was diagnosed with bipolar type 2. Although some of the information was repetitive for me, it did a very good job of giving an overview of the disease and treatment options. What I liked most about it was that it devotes an entire chapter to trying to differentiate type I bipolar from type 2, and hypomania from true mania, and also talks a great deal about the mood spectrum. It also give some insight into mixed mood states, which are combinations of both depression and mania/hypomania which I think largely describe my husband.

  5. This book was exactly as described and in perfect condition.

    Thank you so much.....

5 comments about Change Your Thoughts Meditation CD: Do the Tao Now!.
  1. rating less than a star, I like Dr. Dyer's reading material and lectures; however his voice on this CD is terrible, don't know if even the masters can meditate to that loud, off-key scarry sound of Tao he repeats.

  2. I have always liked to listen to Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, and found his positive and spiritual messages enlightening. However, I was very disappointed with this repording. I thought he would talk a bit about each of the 81 TAO affirmations. Instead, he read each one in his soothing voice while beautiful, relaxing music played, and then broke the spell with three loud and repeated chants. I found the chants so annoying that I could not absorb the affirmations. In fact, did not have time to absorb an affirmation before his chanting virtually destroyed their power. It was extremely difficult for me to listen to the entire CD for the actual content. I believe it would have been much more effective if Dr. Dyer had explained the chant-meditation method and provided an example of his TAO chant (one time) in the introduction at the beginning of the CD. Without the chants I believe the CD would be a wonderful tool for meditation. I still like Dr. Dyer's works, but will never buy another of his audio books that states it is a meditation.

  3. I had experimented with a small sample that is given by joining wayne dyer's mailing list and rush to buy the complete cd. it's a good practice and i recomend you giving it a chance. (If you fell the need to try it first just do what i did)

  4. I am a big fan of Wayne Dyer's, especially his Tao work, but this CD is terrible. I listened to it once and I doubt I will ever listen to it again. Dyer will say a sentence then do 4 "Tao" chants (saying the word "Tao" drawn out for about 20 seconds each.) After listening to this several times, it became unbearable. This is a very disappointing CD.

  5. As meditation is a personal thing and everyone is drawn to different methods I thought I'd share a bit more about this cd.
It's basically a two line reading of each essay(81 essays) followed by a very loud "DAOOOOOOOOOOOOOO".
    Think "AUM" but substitute DAO.

Personally, it's too loud and in my face. I was hoping for a gentle reading of each verse as I have the book and have really enjoyed it(see my review).

This is just an opinion as I know a lot of people like the "AUM". Duz it come with de AUM? No, it comes with the "DAO".
