5 comments about Stick Up for Yourself: Every Kid's Guide to Personal Power & Positive Self-Esteem (Revised & Updated Edition).
  1. This is an excellent book. My son and I read a little bit of it at bedtime and keep a notebook to jot down our thoughts. It has improved his self-worth and it has helped me relearn social skills that I should be using in my own life.

  2. this is an important work. I've submitted it for consideration by the youth education faculty at my church.

  3. This is an excellent tool for kids...also another must-read for parents isBully-Proofing Children: A Practical, Hands-On Guide to Stop Bullying Can't fall victim with these two.

  4. Suggestions and anecdotes in _Stick Up For Yourself_ are helpful for opening discussions with little ones, particularly those who may be socially sensitive or (too) highly adaptable. I don't agree with all its suggestions, but the basic premise is sound -- that to develop personal integrity and firmness of resolve requires thoughtful practice -- and overall, it's a nice resource.

  5. Self-esteem is so important to promoting happy, balanced and empowered children. This is a great start for children since it does a great job explaining to them what their personal power is all about. A companion book for parents that I have found invaluable to parenting my children is:Bully-Proofing Children: A Practical, Hands-On Guide to Stop Bullying. It goes way beyond bullying as it gives you incredible strategies, stories to share with your kids and tips on buiding their self-esteem and communication skills so your child never becomes a bully or victim. Get them both to round out your bookshelf.

5 comments about The Courage to Heal Workbook: A Guide for Women and Men Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse.
  1. This workbook is paperback and has lots of room for notes and comments. Well construsted and felxable for use as a workbook. For any survivor this is a very needful journey. This book and its author has gathered the tools that many have but don't know how to use and helps us understand what to do and how to do it. I have greatly benefitted from this. It is a book well recieved by my therapist. For all survivors and their partners and families this is a book that gives hope, understanding and reassurance. Well worth it.

  2. This book is a true gift - to me and to anyone that was abused in any way, not just sexually.

  3. this workbook is a great accompaniment to The Courage to Heal - Third Edition - Revised and Expanded: A Guide for Women Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse. i worked with a survivor of sexual abuse as she went through both books simultaneously. each session, we would review what she read and gleaned from the 2 texts. there was an appropriate amount of overlap, but she also found that she learned some very different and equally helpful things from each book. the more information and guidance, the better. both are great resources. one caveat is that the book can be overwhelming for some people, and other treatment to break into the territory of recovery may be necessary first.

  4. This workbook is very helpful an assisting my clients while working through their sexual abuse issues.

  5. On the recommendation of my counselor I bought this workbook. I just recieved it and quickly read through it. My first impression is it is very touchy feely and has a lot of "How do you feel" kind of stuff over and over. I guess that is how a person can get in touch with what is bothering them, but it sorta turned me off to it. I'm still going to give it a try and see what will come of using it.

I did like the section on anger and forgiveness as this had some very helpful information. All I know is this whole healing process is confusing and a lot of hard work.

On the topic of forgiveness... I found the book "Forgive and Forget" very informative too. It also talks about what forgiveness really is all about. The Courage Workbook has a small section on this topic too that I found helpful.

What works for one person may not work for another, but you won't know if it will work for you unless you try it.

5 comments about The Mood Cure: The 4-Step Program to Take Charge of Your Emotions--Today.
  1. Easy reading. Packed with up-to-date information, and loads of reference material to guide you.

  2. I have read many books regarding health and nutrition, and only took bits and pieces from those books. This is the first one I heeded the information on. I was sad and depressed occasionally (more often than not), and ate according to my moods. I discovered that my moods were primarily caused by the food I choose to eat. I changed my diet and most of my lifestyle was starting to change before reading it. I can say that when my moods were bad, I would be angry, shy or quite. I can be a better person to others and myself and no longer feel like being killed on the freeway from accidents caused by others. LOL. But really, I'm sure some people understand that, I have had many other people relate to that idea and am not afraid to admit how I felt. I have learned so much from reading this book, which I have helped others understand and try things suggested from the book. I went out and bought a friend a bottle of 5HTP and the book as a gift, because I wanted to share this good feeling. The book is easy to understand, as Julia Ross explains it all. The Mood Cure: The 4-Step Program to Rebalance Your Emotional Chemistry and Rediscover Your Natural Sense of Well-Being

  3. every book has aspects that are debatable. we are supposed to separate the "good" and the "bad" on our own. this was a great book. i started taking some of the aminoacids , based on the questionnaires in the book, and I found it helpful.

  4. This is a truly outstanding book and is intended to help people suffering from real, deep and intractable emotional and mental problems.

Julia Ross is a true pro, working at the front line of mental health care for several decades. This is a book that brings together her hard won knowledge with that of many, many other experts in the field. There is a also a decent amount of scientific research at its core.

Compared with the extrememly poor care offered by the average clinical psychologist or psychiatrist (they essetially offer only drugs or cognitive behaviour therapy) this book heralds the beginning of a revolution in mental health care: at last some people are beginning to recognise that there is a REASON why you (or a friend or relative) is suffering such serious problems with mood, emotions and behaviour. At last there begin to be real solutions which are wholistic and effective.

Julia covers all the main issues - anxiety, depression, OCD, addictions, mood swings and the generally feeling awful and unstable that so many have. She explains why it is happening and which food and supplements to correct it. There are easy to use questionnaires which guide you in understanding which TYPE of depression or anxiety you suffer from and thereby tailor the solution.

Be warned, her solutions are a VERY long way from the general advice just to eat healthily. This is hard core scientific solutions. And a lot of back up with very specific recommendations for amino acids (to make all those neurotransmitters that regulate mood - dopamine, serotonin & GABA) and vitamins and minerals which are used in specific high doses as medicines.

The solution requires work and commitment. But ultimately it is highly workable and simple in structure. And it really changes lives.

Julia Ross opens a door and throws open the windows on a room in which so many feel trapped. No more decades of incomprehensible misery. I use this book in my practice and buy copies in bulk to give to my patients. It is an outstanding introduction - written in an engaging style but with a good strong foundation in science. A serious book that nevertheless invites everyone in.

As a response to the negative reviews below, Ms Ross does indeed take a dim view of vegetarianism - but a) this is a small point in a large and rich book and b) she has this view born of years of experience. A high protein diet is necessary for people suffering emotional health problems because protein is the source of the neurotransmitters which will ultimately cure the depression, anxiety etc. Some people are genetically predisposed to need more than average. Protein is also important for blood sugar stabilisation - unstable blood sugar being near universal with any eating issues, carbohydrate cravings, sugar addictions, much anxiety and mood swings. I find I need to give most of my vegetarian patients protein supplement powders (whey, pea, rice protein etc) before I can build up their programme of recovery further.

In summary a very good book to start your journey. Of equal excellence (in some ways superior) and more scientific in its approach (the emphasis more on neutraceuticals supplements than diet) is Depression Free Naturally by Joan Larson. Don't be fooled by the title - is covers all major issues including very serious ones like schizophrenia.

Additionally, anyone with serious emotional and mental issues should buy Gut and Psychology Syndrome - that gut toxicity is highly involved in much illness is now beyond debate and at least 45% of my patients need help with their gut before they can properly recover. This book will explain how and why.

Good luck and whatever happens don't give up. There are answers to your struggles. The Mood Cure and Depression Free Naturally will be a good start. Add in the book on Gut and Psychology, Adrenal Fatigue, a good book on the thyroid and maybe something on mercury toxicity. A great deal of mental suffering can be alleviated with these interventions. Have faith - a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. You will be taking the first when you buy this book.

  5. The Mood Cure: The 4-Step Program to Take Charge of Your Emotions

This book was very informative and had a great amount of nutritional
info for alternative treatments for people who are dealing with depression and for those trying to withdraw from cigaretts, acholol or drugs. These ideas are on the cutting edge of treatment options and provide much needed treatment alternatives when standard depression RX's are not effective. There are great suggetions on how to discuss the ideas with your doctor. There are many references for nutritional testing services listed; these are provide a important resource for more control over your individual treatment options with your doctor.

5 comments about Preparing for Marriage: A Complete Guide to Help You Discover God's Plan for a Lifetime of Love.
  1. My fiance' and I are very pleased with this product. We are looking forward to applying what we've learned being engaged and married.

  2. So far this is a great book. It keeps my Fiance and I interested. And it's a workbook!

  3. While there are areas that really don't apply if you are middle-aged and getting married, we just skimmed those. The rest is very well thought out and creates a real atmosphere of learning about one another (that is, as long as you are truthful with your answers).

I would recommend this book to anyone seeking to prepare for marriage and to know if they really are sure. Obviously, it must be taken seriously to really help at all.

  4. My husband and I used this book as part of an 8 week Premarital Counseling course. We both found the book to bring up good topics for discussion though most of them we had discussed before. I would not describe myself as a very religious person but more of a spiritual person with strong Christian beliefs. That said, I found some "opinions" in the book to be narrow minded and that some of the bible passages were taken out of context. I do think that it was a good tool as part of our sessions but don't depend completely on this book for your premarital counseling. We also looked at The 5 Love Languages and Dave Ramsey's book Financial Peace Revisited. Those books as well as the insight from our counselors made all the difference.

  5. Great Book!!!!!! My husband and I read through this when we started to consider marriage and absolutely loved it. We really enjoyed the interaction and activity oriented tasks as we were challenged to dig deeper and to prepare for marriage! Wonderful for couples that haven't been married before, opens the lines of communication as well as shedding light any assumptions each may be carrying about marriage. Great Christian book with a God honoring but realistic message. -mrs. hodawanus (:

5 comments about Beyond Codependency: And Getting Better All the Time.
  1. The truth of the matter is:

We don't want to hear it and we make any excuse to deny it. This book is a denial killer!

I have been in recovery for years and let me just tell you, Beattie is right on top of the root problem. No matter who reads the words, the truth is loud and clear. I would recommend this item to anyone having problems with any relationship.

You don't need to be a doctor or a shrink to see the writing on the wall. Beattie spells it out and even if you don't agree, it will open your mind to change. Worth every penny spent!

  2. Melody Beattie's follow up to Codependent No More does not disappoint. I love it. It has fantastic stories and helpful strategies to live a happier life. I love this author.

  3. I've been a counselor for a good number of years and I have often recommended this book for individuals who desire healthier relationships where you can respect others and take care of yourself as well.

  4. this is a good book to own. my copy is dog-eared all over. and it make a wonderful gift for friends that you know who are having a difficult time. her interpretations of recovery bring everything down to a day to day experience that is very personal and very moving.

  5. Beattie scores again with this self-help book. This is more in-depth than her first book, "Codependent No More," and is for those of us who have moved past the beginning steps of our recovery.

Non-Christian Note: The one and only thing that put me off about this book was the constant references to religion. Yes, she says that any form of spirituality is accepted and acceptable for recovering, but when reading her book you can easily tell which one she prefers.

5 comments about The Anger Trap: Free Yourself from the Frustrations that Sabotage Your Life.
  1. Great book, it has changed my life (no bull). Anger is as debilitating as cancer. You may not even be aware of how angry you are, or how you're expressing it. The great thing about the book is it teaches you that you have options, and you can change how you handle your anger. You can make use of your anger to improve your life. Anyone would benefit from reading this book.

  2. I bought this for my husband, who was willing & interested in dealing with his anger issues. Both of us agreed that it was just a silly pile of psycho-babble. Really.

  3. I thought the Anger Trap was very insightful and as I read through it I recognized my typical anger-generating habits of thinking. I also learned ways to retrain my thinking - slowly but surely - in order the respond to things less emotionally. I also learned that when I am "angry" I am probably really something else - disappointed, afraid, frustrated, feeling rejected or dismissed. When I start to get mad now I pause and ask myself, "what is really going on here?" and that alone has enabled me to explore other sides to my personality that I have tried to ignore for the last 30 yrs. I can get through situations that used to make me blow my top as a sane, calm person now. It helps to dialogue with myself (silently, of course, lest they get the net!) by using techniques from the book.

My only beef with the premise (it's always something...) is that the author goes with the idea that anger comes from past problems. Grow up with a dad who yells or hits and you'll yell or hit. However, there are many studies that show that a violent home does not necessarily beget a violent child, a calm home does not beget a calm child. Just as anxiety can run in families or depression, might not problems such as overreaction to stimulus? If the dad is a yeller, perhaps it is his genes that pass on the anger and not his yelling. Otherwise, why don't all people from certain types of parents exhibit the behavior? I bring this up, because it is easier to face the problem sometimes when there is no one to blame (except perhaps God, if you lean that way). Rather than bemoan the mess a parent has made of one, it might be better to treat it as a limp that runs in the family but was not bequeathed with any malice. You have the limp, now figure out how to walk with it. You have the temper, now figure out how to respond to life as a decent human being with it.

  4. I have quite a few books on cognitive psychology. However, I had no idea what a big component anger was to my emotional health. By now, everybody has been given the opportunity to learn that mental health is a very complex issue. However, many of us(I'm guilty of it) seem to deal with our emotions with the same thought processes, over and over. If you're like me, you end up kidding yourself that one day you're going to finally relax.. and not be so angry.

I found a lot of books kind of boring... re-stating the obvious, or talking about things in a very "clinical" way. I have to say, Les Carter put together a very good book. I used to think that I was aware of the many destructive thought processes that we can possess. Chapter after chapter, however, I was impressed with the new insight into such an old problem.

I have heard that some people will make the point that Les Carter is coming from a religious perspective. I'm an atheist and did not know of his religious background before getting halfway into the book. I can say that he does a great job of leaving religion out of the book to keep its information universally acceptable.

When buying this book, I thought it was just going to cover a small facet of my emotional well being. I, now, think that this is one of the more useful books in my collection.

When I read a book on depression, it often exposes profound insights into my own thought processes. However, this book provided a different way of interpreting the behaviors of my parents, teachers, bosses, co-workers, girlfriends, etc. I, definitely, was not expecting to get this much out of this book.

  5. I think a lot of people don't like this short of book because there is no one answer. I finished the book and I'm still thinking of what I should do in my own life to make the changes I want. But the problem is that everyone is different and so it is impossible to have a book have everyone's answers.

The thing the book does do well, and other books try to do as well, is to create insight into your own life, not to let anyone off the hook, but rather, to approach a problem more effectively and more importantly, without creating other problems.

Even though I feel like I can communicate my frustrations effectively, I found this book very helpful. I happened to be reading it over a period of bad weeks and I found that it really would help my moods.

I actually think that this book is good for a lot of different types of people, not even those who consider themselves necessarily angry people. I believe the book offers a lot of other types of insight as well.

If you are looking for a less dry, funnier take on these things, and a faster read, Harriet Lerner's Dance of Intimacy/Anger is just one of my favorite reads.

  1. Might well be a recipe for ulcers , heart attacks and strokes:
reminds me of the latest fad diet. The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet: Plus Dr. Tarnower's Lifetime Keep-Slim Program
Taking advantage of an aging generation of baby boomers who worry
about their future is somewhat reprehensible.
In my psychology class we had to study
a case history of monkey's that psychologists gave ulcers by " shaking things up a bit".
Stone age hunter gathers mostly lived to a ripe old age of 25:
so emulating them is probably very bad advise.
Point by point the book's prescriptions can be one for an early death
for people who haven't already taken good care of themselves.
The most important thing in keeping your brain alive
is not believing you are too old to think.
Distrust doctors trying to get rich by publishing
a cheap popular book without much real substance that you can read in 10 minutes.

  2. This is a really quick read...
Full of practical information. If you want actual exercises to do to increase your memory, this is it.
You can read it today and start working on your brain capacity tonight!

  3. Very interesting and simple book to follow. I am definitely going to do the exercises.

  4. "Keep Your Brain Alive" is pretty much what I expected. Explains(simple/effective)ways of creating new neural pathways performing routine(mundane) activities.

  5. I liked Katz's book. A simple explanation of concepts and suggestions about how to stretch your brain and keep it healthy. A good start to understanding the field of neurobics .

5 comments about Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me, 7th Edition.
  1. I got Paula's 2003 edition in 2006, but was sorry that it was rather outdated and in that edition she said she wouldn't be doing another one. So I was happily surprised to find a brand new edition in Barnes & Noble, and after perusing it I plan to order it from Amazon. A few comments: Some reviewers claim Paula gives negative reviews to most product so she can push her own line. I don't agree with that. In fact, in the 2003 edition which I have, she includes descriptions of her products but decided not to even rate them. I think in the new edition she DOES rate them finally. As someone who has really been a makeup junkie, particularly with trying out skin care products, I found her descriptions and evaluations extremely useful. I have tried cheap products and very expensive ones, and have found things I loved in both categories. One thing I DO believe is that the highly expensive products cannot really justify the high price tags. My own experience has shown that more expensive is not necessarily better. And cheap isn't necessarily bad. My own favorite cleanser, discovered by accident many years ago, is Cetaphil, and Paula rates that one highly. I just ordered a bunch of Paula's own product samples, and from what I can tell from small samples, I like them a lot, particularly her concealers. None of them irritated my skin. I've had a lot of trouble with sensitivity and skin scrubs, so I'm anxious to try her AHA gels instead of using granular type scrubs. By the way, the information on her website is useful and her lectures are interesting. Paula knows a lot and she has been studying and evaluating skin care for a long time. This book represents an enormous compilation of work, and there is nothing else like it out there. You may not agree with all of her opinions (for example, although I had hoped I wouldn't like it, I really do like Creme de la Mer despite its outrageous price, and I've found it soothing to my skin when it is in a reddish, upset state. I'd like to find a cheap clone of it, but thus far have not found one). The point is, you can use her reviews as a starting place for your cosmetics purchases. The fact is, cosmetics companies really do take advantage of us all and our desire to look good. I think we'd all admit that there are some truly outrageous prices out there, and after years of trying things, I have to admit I haven't found any miracles yet. It's a full circle, and I'm back to the point of trying to find products to cleanse and moisturize without irritating my skin. Nothing fancy is really needed. One interesting thing Paula provides is information where there is huge product overlap (example: all Olay's lines, with older ones now being cheaper and the newest ones costing quite a bit more. Yet, considering their ingredients, there is no real difference between them....you just pay more for the newer ones!!). All the beauty magazines feature various products (obviously "paid" by cosmetic companies to do so), and it's nice to find out more details about what these "really" are. In short, this is a great and very useful book if you approach it with the right attitude. For products I like, it's nice to learn exactly what component of the products creates the effect I like, too.

  2. I've bought the last 3 editions of this book, and each one has saved me tons of money. Paula's reviews are fair and accurate - even though we disagree on a few key items. Any time I make a new beauty purchase I first check it out in her book. It's astonishing how much better quality product is offered in drug stores these days. I highly recommend this book.

  3. Wow! This book really stands out with its scientific references. How often do you find complete references including even the page numbers of the scientific journal, in a popular book? I thoroughly enjoyed this book even though cosmetics are not really my thing (I'm too lazy or "busy" to bother). Now I actually find myself using face creams and sunscreens. I used to think all cosmetic products were a waste of money but now I'm convinced that some products actually do help the skin.

Some of the critical reviewers here have clearly not read the book very well. I don't know where they get the idea that Begoun is against natural ingredients or plant oils. Quite the contrary, her own products are full of these and nowhere in the book did she say that she is against them. What she is against is using natural ingredients (or any ingredients) that have not been proven effective by scientific studies. In other words, she only wants to use those natural ingredients that actually work.

The same goes for essential oils. She is not againts using them if they have proven to be effective. Some essential oils have been and you can find those in her own products. What she does not like is for essential oils to be added to products solely because of the scent. And I agree: why would you want to put ANYTHING on your skin that does not have any purpose? If you want to enjoy the scent of essential oils you can use them in candles or spray them onto your clothes. You don't have to expose your skin to something that nobody really knows very much about.

  4. A no-muss no-fuss review of the cosmetic world -- be brave about the somewhat intimidating thickness as most of the pages or specific to product reviews. The actual information is a quick and useful read both front and back, then use the material in the middle to fill in answers to your questions. Highly recommend -- glad I purchased.

  5. This book was very helpful for deciding what new products to try. But I feel you should take her critiques with a grain of salt. If your already using a product and you find it works for you I don't see why you should discontinue the use just because she dislikes the product. Overall it was very informational and I feel I am that much more aware of what I put on my skin.

  1. work as advisor for a group and couldnt find enough copies.Submitted the order and recieved the books in brand new condition a full day ahead of scheduled time to expect.LOVE it.

  2. I want to thank everyone in the fellowship for showing me how to stay clean for more than 14 years to this date of my review. I rarely go to meetings today due a new direction in spirituality, however, the foundation of this program has been grounded in my life to have kept me clean for this long. If you are new to recovery, do what I did. Go to the meetings for the coffee. I say this cause it really doesn't matter why you go to meetings in the beginning as long as you suit up and show up. You will go for the right reasons eventually and they will make you get this book. It worked for me thus far and I hope you find recovery as I did utilizing this book and my sponsor for the answers to stay clean ONE DAY AT A TIME. God Bless!

  3. Recieved Wrong Book. Got (AA) Alcoholica Annonymous, not (NA)Narcotics Anonymous. Poorer condition that was stated

Contacted sender 3 times with no response.

    Very disapointed. Purchased book elsewhere.

  4. this is a must-have resource for those whose drug of choice is not alcohol, but some other drug (cocaine, meth, marijuana, Rx meds, etc.) Like the book Alcoholics Anonymous, it explains the foundations of recovery for those starting their journey into sobriety and recovery.

After reading this, I would encourage the person to read other recovery materials, especially from the Hazelden organization, and GWC Inc. (Look them up on the internet). You will find a wealth of recovery materials there to continue the journey.

  5. The Big Book for NA tells us everything we need to know to work the steps. A great way to start for those wanting help.
