5 comments about The Go-Giver: A Little Story About a Powerful Business Idea.
  1. I recently gave a copy of this book to a prominent businessman in my community. He read it in flight, and decided to give copies out to the 15 people he is mentoring. It has started becoming quite the buzz in the area, and people I'd never have expected to know of it are now giving copies out to others. I look forward to seeing the community learn the new ways to establish business - not self-focused - but how to give much more in value to others.

  2. I read the manuscript for this beautiful little book a few years ago, before it was published. Bob Burg wanted my opinions and input (he knows I'm not a business person.) I read the entire book immediately. This isn't the norm for me, as I am usually reading several books at a time and tend to skim over what doesn't seem to relate to me. I emailed Bob right back and told him that I loved it and hoped he would be able to get this book published and out to the public - like yesterday.

Once again, Bob has used his gift of keeping it simple and finding a way to make his theories relate to ANYONE - not just sales/business people. There is a spiritual core to this book that will improve the life of anyone who follows the 5 principles in the book, far beyond financial gain. Just read it. Then share it.

  3. This small book opened my eyes to several success paradigms of life. The five laws of stratospheric success described in the book are:

    The law of value
    The law of compensation
    The law of influence
    The law of authenticity
    The law of reciprocity

The character ethic that Stephen Covey talks about in his book "7 habits of highly effective people" is illustrated at its best in this book!

All these are principles that need to be followed in every aspect of our lives to live a truly successful life.

A fabulous book! Well worth the investment and the time it takes to read it!

  4. This book is well worth reading for some valuable insights into what really matters in business. But can the authors actually hear theselves when it comes to portrayals of women in this book? Women "make the best coffee," they serve men as happy assistants, they cry themselves to sleep, they start preschool programs that become big companies, etc. The funniest part was in a two-career couple where they've both had a long day at the office, so SHE cooks dinner!

I'm trying to take the lessons without worrying about the rest (it's a charming book with an important story to tell), but as a woman the female portrayals completely grated on me. Note to authors Bob Burg and John David Mann: Margaret Thatcher, Angela Ahrendts, Benazir Bhutto, Elizabeth Dole, Christine Todd Whitman, Melinda French Gates, Indra Nooyi, Christiane Amanpour, Amy Woods Brinkley, Ursula Burns, Arianna Huffington, DREW GILPIN FAUST, Ambassador Susan Schwab, Meg Whitman, and Susan Arnold. Not a coffee-fetcher in the bunch, and I'll bet they don't cry themselves to sleep, either. :-)

  5. I've been looking for someone to SHOW me how they achieved success, still am. When you are born on the "wrong side" of the track and are ambitious, it can be tough to find anyone successful who can help you, teach, take you by the hand.

Although I'm still looking for a mentor, I've found one in Pindar as I can relate to Joe.

If like me you THIRST for true success and don't know where to begin, then "there's someone I'd like you to meet".

3 comments about Integral Life Practice: A 21st-Century Blueprint for Physical Health, Emotional Balance, Mental Clarity, and Spiritual Awakening.
  1. I was pleasantly surprised by this book, considering I had low expectations going in. I'm a fan of Wilber but have thought the previous attempts (A theory of everything and A integral vision) at presenting his theory for a broader audience were, frankly, horrible. This book which is basically written by three others writers (closely connected to Wilber) is probably the best introduction to why an integral approach to spirituality is important.
The book breaks down into important aspects of our selves that we can "work" on and explore. None of the content in itself is groundbreaking, if you're familiar with shadow work the section on it simply presents the basic, but it is lucidly written and well organized. The same goes for all the topics: body work, spiritual practices, mind (i.e. Wilber's integral theory)....though I was glad to see a nice section on devotional approaches or an integral theism, something that is often lacking in popular spiritual books.
The impact of the book was its overall scope, when I step back and really take in all the different practices and important aspect of our human life, its inclusive vision is beautiful and penetrating. The overall drift I got from the book: if you're transcending your limitations, be sure not to reject your simple and grounded humanity. If you're primarily working on psychological/physical improvement think about greater possibilities then simply improving your mortal identity.
If you take the book with a grain of salt, which I did, you will probably find a lot of useful and practical information (maybe even a little inspiration). The most annoying part of the book was that some of the language and design remind me of a computer course: technologies, modules, bubble notes: Am I studying for the SAT or what here?

  2. There's so much fragmentation in spirituality now days its a sweet refreshment to find a book that integrates body, mind, spirit and shadow practices in a seamless, clear and understandable fashion. Read it, pick up the concepts presented, and practice. In doing so the proof is in the pudding, and you'll be well on your way to experiencing an extraordinarily rich life.

  3. This book is truly a gift to humanity. It contains simple yet essential practices for those looking to take the leap of faith into the next stage of human consciousness and evolution. It is written intelligently yet it's tone is warm, friendly, and easy-to understand. The team of writers challenge and engage us not just to think about ways to improve our lives, but to actually practice those ways, to do and be those ways. The writers give us a dynamic and effective tool to actualize our true and widest and highest potentials.

The book distills a variety of powerful techniques and information from ancient traditions and the latest cutting-edge technologies into one short, sweet, and potent read. I especially liked the examples they give on how to start your own Integral Life Practice (ILP). This book is a great addition to the Integral Life Practice Starter Kit It expands on many of the products included in the kit.

I think that this book will attract a larger and broader audience than Ken Wilber's previous works did. It is sure to change and transform many people lives. Can't wait to see what Ken and the folks at Integral have in store for the future. This book is highly recommended.

  1. I am giving this book a tentative 4-star rating because I really wish I had gotten this book instead of some other bad book that came better rated than this one. Even though I have yet to read it (I am now going to buy it in-store), by visiting Marie's free supplemental website I can really see how her tips and methods can work... her theory of telling one's-self, for example that "this is it" and "this is what I want" in life, at every challenging situation or mind-numbing social event, I have already learned to make the best of whatever situation I am in, instantly making myself more relaxed, positive, outgoing and most importantly potentially charming (and dare I say irresistable) to the opposite sex.
If you are skeptical like I am to spend money on a product like this that might not work, might leave you discouraged or waste your time with tips you could come up with yourself, visit her website and see for yourself rather than taking these comments at face-value. Also know however that some of her tips are "common knowledge" meaning, you can probably find versions of her advice on other websites or wikis. Like every self-help thingy, you have to take the author's advice with a grain of salt; no book is going to be a "cure-all", nor will a title (especially as provocative as Marie's) really, truly be the most appropriate category for the material inside (even Marie admits in the preface that she used the title just to catch your attention). With Marie's book and a little bit of practice (!) I really think I can make some improvements to my social life!

  2. I realized that my girlfriend was unknowingly following Marie's advice when we'd met, and for all of the time we've been together. That is why we have such a perfect, fun-filled relationship and are known among our friends as the "perfect couple."I also recommend my favorite book about love I Love You. Now What?: Falling in Love is a Mystery, Keeping It Isn't

  3. I enjoyed reading this book, the title really grabs you. It was upbeat and easy to read. And what a concept, get your own life and men will be more drawn to you!!

  4. To be honest everyone thought I had the ultimate dream lifestyle and, on the face of it, I did! But the trouble was I always knew deep down, I wasn't truly happy. I knew there was more to life. Your book gave me the direction to face up to the challenge of improving my inner needs. So I applied the tips and now my life has the meaning that I was searching for. Everyone around me has noticed the difference, but of course I haven't told them the secrets!

  5. Found this to be a fun and easy to read book, excellent advice for any female who cares enough to read & improve their dating skills.

5 comments about Jonathan Livingston Seagull.
  1. Who would have thought that a fictional seagull named Jonathon Livingston could have become such a timeless hero of the modern self-discovery movement? Here I am thirty-eight years after the first publication date reviewing this powerful classic. Why is this little story about a seagull such a powerful read? What makes this tale of a nonconforming gull so timeless?

I'll confess, I read Jonathon Livingston Seagull when it was first released in 1970. Part of me "got it" and the other part was trying to figure out why there were so many pictures of seagulls? Then, came the movie sound track written and recorded by Neil Diamond. That was it - I was a "believer!" I got the message big time. I realized that with effort and belief, I could potentially conquer the world. Jonathon gave me permission to spread my wings and become my own person.

Jonathon Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach is a short read - in the 2006 edition it is 91 pages including many filled with photographs of seagulls. It's not about how long this book is, it's about the power of the message. This is a tale of one bird striving to live his life's mission, no matter the effort.

There is a Jonathon in all of us . . .

** The one that wants to not blindly follow the flock but fly out on our own

** The one that wants to discover our greatest talents and live our "bliss"

** The one that doesn't care what other people think

** The one that knows that there is something great to be learned by trying new things.

** The one that believes in being the best by loving and living our life's passion.

In order to really "get this book" be ready to appreciate the beauty of your dreams and the power of persistence. You'll get out of this book what you're ready to learn at this moment in your life. If you're at the place in life where you truly believe you can make a difference, find happiness and live a life filled with self-satisfaction - this book could very well have a powerful and emotionally uplifting impact on your life.

My suggestion: Pour yourself a glass or cup of your favorite beverage, put on the Neil Diamond sound track and curl up in your most comfortable chair. Get ready to immerse yourself in the beauty of Jonathon Livingston Seagull. Fly to new heights, perfect your talents and never, ever give up on your passion. Be prepared to enjoy the most celebrated seagull in literary history - Jonathon Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach.

"Jonathon Seagull discovered that boredom and fear and anger are the reasons that a gull's life is so short, and with these gone from his thought, he lived a long fine life indeed."
From page 26 of Jonathon Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach

  2. The book is metaphorical, simple, and very inspirational. Jonathan Livingston is a seagull who found it boring to crave for food and tried to fly in the sky, unlike his fellow earth-living seagulls. Jonathan was immediately proclaimed The Outcast and expelled from the Flock; he has been to Heaven and back; he had lots of followers in the end, and made his ideas of freedom popular. Jonathan Livingston overcame the contempt, social problems, and his nature of seagull for the sake of being able to follow his dreams.

The book reflects the ideals of freedom; freedom of thought, of self-expression, and of dreaming is what keeps Jonathan going ahead. As every innovator, he must not be afraid of becoming an outcast - and he is not. In the end, he is rewarded with realization of his dreams of rapid flights.

The book is somewhat simplistic; the idea is repeated in Gorkyi, Coelho, and many other inspirational writings. For that reason, many reviewers are lowering the rating. But simplistic does not necessarily mean primitive; most pieces of wisdom can be expressed very easily. Jonathan Livingston is a nice metaphor, and the book overall is a cute and inspirational reading.

  3. This story will change your life forever, if you understand the message.

I read this book and saw the movie as a student in the 8th grade. This book has a very strong meaning and has helped me to make a difference in my life. This book has remained as my favorite book, to this day. I still love to read it. Jonathan Livingston Seagull is my role model. I feel that this story also helped me to develop strong charisma in my life.

I strongly recommend this book for class readings for anyone with students age 12 or older. I am very thankful to my teacher, Mrs. Jimenez, for sharing this book with her class and me.

  4. I am quite an Avid Reader and have read quite a few books in my life.
I can very confidently say that this book was by far the most impressive book I have read. Short and Simple and yet drives home a point like a piledriver. I will never forget this one. Absolutely Fantastic.

  5. This book is an interesting parable about life using a seagull's experience. It is a book of encouragement and I highly recommend it to those who are searching for faith.

5 comments about Feelings Buried Alive Never Die.
  1. The title is appropiate for the information inside. The book not only informs a person who, what, why, where a person with buried feelings struggle in life, but shows you a solution to resolving the inner conflict, enabling you to return or possibly gain for the first time the peace inside we all desire.

  2. This is the first book the author wrote about feelings, which caused me to purchase her follow up book on "Healing Feelings from the Heart". I really like both these books. Feelings Buried Alive gives you a list of feelings and where they are found in the body. For those of us in the natural health and inner healing community, this kind of information is invaluable. It is a book that you need to glean from because you may not agree with all aspects of what the Author is saying, but its worth having in your library for reference.

  3. Another book showing how emotions we bottle up and bury are still in us--not forgotten--and can cause us physical pain. A method for getting rid of the hurts/emotions is The Script contained in this book. Useful charts with physical pain and possible emotional causes that are at minimum food for thought! Also word association section which is great for reference. I also appreciate that spirituality plays a large role.
I believe there is a personal "readiness" factor (which has to do with anyone rating a mind/body book negatively). Some are just not ready to hear this kind of stuff yet. Some would say in disbelief "what! my knee hurts because I'm inflexible?" yet it makes so much sense! Westerners are conditioned to think that every pain is structural in origin, which is simply not true. I've had my own pain that was indeed healed by emotional healing. It takes effort to get rid of these feelings, but it's so worth it!
I enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it (yes, there are some typos esp. at the beginning). Invaluable information.

  4. I would highly recommend this book to everyone. It is a great way to clear unwanted baggage out of you life and it teaches the importance of our words and thoughts.

  5. I loved this book primarily for it's descriptions in the back portion which describes which body parts are affected by what emotions. A helpful tool in determining how your emotions and feelings manifest in the physical form.

5 comments about The Life You Were Born to Live: A Guide to Finding Your Life Purpose (Millman, Dan).
  1. This book was recommended to me. I had never read into or about numerology before. I am amazed that not only is the book 100% accurate about me, but also 100% accurate about everyone who I have calculated. Interesting...makes you think about the universe and the powers at be.

  2. This book is amazingly enlightening to why things have turned out the way they did in my own life and also in the life of my husband. We're both 4s. As 4s, we understand better than Millman (I think) as to why we skip steps towards a goal and subsequently fail . . . not just once but repeatedly! So many times, I was willing to give up ever attempting a new goal again!

But then, ah, destiny prevailed and brought this book to my attention through finding Millman's first book A Peaceful Warrior in one of our local thrift shops.

Process, process, process. Life is a process. It's amazing how many things I have failed to do are demanding processes ... finish a quilt. Write a book. Save money. Lose weight. Everything, it seems, is a process. This is normally overwhelming to "impatient" people like my husband and me. We usually dive headfirst into the new endeavor and never look back until we've spent $20,000 on a failed business attempt, or whatever!

This is the most prominent enlightenment thus far. His advice is to break down the processes into tiny steps that each one by themselves can be reached! Thanks for the lessons. There are many more for us both in this book! I DO HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to anyone with an open mind.

  3. This book is awesome!! Not only do my numbers apply to my personality, but the numbers of my friends and family apply to theirs as well. Once again...thanks Dan!!

  4. Very interesting and captivating. This was so on the mark, and I like that it's not just the typical numerology based sytem. Much more accurate. I actually choked up reading my specific life path description, there were things in there I'm barely aware of but I know are true. Now all my friends are borrowing it!!

  5. When I went to the bookstore and happened upon this book, by the author of one of my favorite books, Way of the Peaceful Warrior, I read the back flap and was totally dismayed. I tend to be quite the skeptic when it comes to pseudo-mathematics. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I figured out my birth number and flipped to the sections for me.

I was blown away as to how accurately the main hurdles I face in life were pointed out. I have a hard time imagining that everyone will find their life's largest problems in one single book, but for me this was spot on. Good advice and warnings were given. I really got a lot out of what was written. For comparison, I briefly read through some other chapters that were not related to my birth number, and they did not resonate at all.

From Way of the Peaceful Warrior I got Millman's concept of what life was meant to be about. This book is not about the meaning of life, but rather the specifics of obstacles on the path to discovering it. And for me, it was great to see that the hurdles I face due to my personality are not all self-imposed, but are part of a bigger picture; it somehow makes them easier to bear.

Thanks, Dan Millman, for another quality introspective book.

5 comments about Facing Love Addiction: Giving Yourself the Power to Change the Way You Love.
  1. If you have as many sisters as I got, then you surely need this book. Women tend to be more additive to love. When they are trying to recover, then they should read this book.

In the book, author travel the great length to give you examples of how? Why causes it. Good reads.
It makes women to analyze their dating strategies. Some might work, some might not, get the book called, "Rules" for dating, get this book for healing, and in between, pray to the lady luck.

  2. My beloved yoga teacher recommended I read this.

    I highly recommend this book.

Personally, it has been a profound experience. I can now see this is a pattern of behavior that others have gone through as well.

I have felt alone. and reading this book has given me assurance and the ground work for change, for growth and healing.
It is simple enough to read in a couple of days, but i have reread it several times now. and am working the suggested exercises.

    thank you for reading.

  3. Excellent and helpful information about dysfunctional codependent intimate relationships. Great for people in recovery from substance abuse as well as others suffering from relationship problems.
Sexist cultural influences not discussed but the useful information outweighs the deficits. Recommended for all readers interested in having healthier, happier and more mature relationships. Helpful for counselors working with adults or teens with relationship challenges.

  4. i hated this book. blames everything on a screwed up childhood & tells you to get counseling.
the author doesnt offer any other explanation as to why you love people who dont love you back.
dont pay full price for this book if you want to read it.

  5. For the school-trained psychologist or Psy.D., FLA may be flawed by post-millennial standards, but not very. Though a first-rate clinician, Mellody seems not to care about "conflicting attachment schemes," "dissociative identity" or "borderlne personality organization." Much of what professionals have been taught about the etiology of identity enmeshment really doesn't matter to the lay reader.

Mellody sees the common, seducer-rejector flip-flopping in the love addicts and love avoidants who are usually one and the same person, but does not emphasize it to the extent many others do (see Benjamin, Bockian, Kluft, Linehan, Gunderson, Mason, Masterson, Millon, Preston, Putnam, and Stone).

While more attention to the "splitting" that's so common in these people might have been helpful, Mellody may well have elected to avoid the issue for a good reason. It might have been too much of a "sharp stick in the eye" and "get in the way."

Mellody's views were formed in the trenches at The Meadows in Wickenburg, AZ, where thousands have sat (as well as twisted, squirmed and bawled) through five days of self-revelation called "survivors' week." Mellody specializes in opening Pandora's various boxes, and one of them is child abuse. She knows that if sex was part of it, love addiction and love avoidance -- and dissociative identity -- will often follow.

As was the case with her hugely successful Facing Codependence (1989), Mellody's approach is more theoretical, purposeful and direct than Beattie's (Codependent No More, Beyond Codependency) vis the bigger subject, and Schaef's in her Escape from Intimacy (1987), as well as Peele's and Norwood's earlier work on the narrower concept of obsessive romance.

It's also -far- more organized, understandable and utilitarian. The result is psychoeducation and bibliotherapy at its finest for the early 1990s.

The troubled reader -will- come away with a firm grasp of the specific topic of delusional romance addiction (this is -not- a book about -sex- addiction; for that see Carnes). And most will see themselves in the mirror. Insofar as the "contemplation," "identification" and "acceptance" phases of treatment for interpersonal issues are concerned, Mellody has no equals that I know of.

Nor will the 57-page workbook section fail to produce results in those areas, as well as, to some degree, in the "commitment" and "relapse prevention" phases. Mellody's methods may be highly experiential and "onion-peeling" during Survivors' Week, but here she is a cognitivist offering a dozen different exercises aimed at labeling, framing, belief examination and appraisal schemes.

What I hope for in a future edition is 1) the same fine examination of the syndromes, and 2) a simpler, more accessable, user-friendly and faster acting set of cognitive-behavioral exercises based on methods developed by Albert Ellis, Aaron Beck, Arthur Freeman, Martin Seligman, Jeffrey Young, Richard Wessler and the like.

Why re-invent the wheel? The "thought-questioning" exercises of this type are easy to learn and adapt, highly self-empowering, rewarding, motivating, and, above all, -effective-. The TQ methods of cognitive-behavioral and/or rational-emotive therapy produce emotional comfort, as well as attitudinal and behavioral change, -very- rapidly.

Those taught to use TQ will benefit hugely from -this- very effectively presented description of The Problem, however. As is the case with Facing Codependence, this is -great- stuff.

  2. Louise is an incredible teacher. I love the cd that comes with this book, and the power and assertiveness in her voice and message. She suggests a 30 day listening regimen, and I'm doing it.

    Highly recommended! Thank you, Louise!

  3. This is a great little book and CD. It has helped my husband and I so much. I really recommend it! :-)

  4. I love this book! Louise Hay has a peaceful, joyful way of writing and speaking. This book comes with a CD, with Louise reading the book. It is great to listen to in the car. I also enjoy reading from this book everyday. I like the way it is divided into important life issues so it's easy to go right to the one that will help you in any particular situation. This book gives you positive affirmations to help you in all areas of life. I love Louise's message and her loving, quiet way of getting it across. It's a small book so you don't get bogged down in a long read. I am very pleased with this book and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in improving their own self-talk and improving their general attitude towards life.

  5. Great book. I started to browse through the book before listening to the CD. The CD in the back of the book is 99% the same as the book. A few words off here and there but not a big deal. I have it in my car right now. I love the daily affirmations for each chapter. (Prospertiy, self esteem, work etc.)

Great gift for yourself or for others.

5 comments about The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book.
  1. This is a very important topic and people need real information that will help them. Unfortunately, the content of this book is meager at best. I would look elsewhere.

  2. A great book with very useful information for everyday life. It can be extremely useful if implemented into your life. Highly recommend!

  3. Wow! Emotional intelligence really packs a punch! It is an amazing skill set that has a tremendous impact upon what we do and say each day. I learned a lot from this book about how emotional intelligence works and also how I can improve and use it to my advantage. The online test that comes with the book is outstanding! Very informative and such a nice addition to provide with a book.

I came across this book when I read Squawk!: How to Stop Making Noise and Start Getting Results by the same author. I enjoyed Squawk! a lot (it's about leadership) and really see the connection to emotional intelligence. They are very complimentary and both very helpful books. Highly recommended!

  4. This is a special book. In addition to illustrating how emotional intelligence works and why it is important, it showed me how I can identify my emotions accurately in the moment and respond to them more effectively. The techniques are quite easy to apply, and I am already managing the destructive emotions better. A must read for people who are looking to get ahead at work and/or get along better with a spouse or loved ones.

  5. I'm a big fan of the Dalai Lama and noticed that he liked this book and wrote a blurb for it. So, I gave it a try and got a lot out of it. It's a very practical book that shows you how to understand and manage your emotions, how to read other people, and how to connect better with those you care about and those you work with. It's the kind of book you go back to and reference after you read it. Highly recommended.
