5 comments about Anxious to Please: 7 Revolutionary Practices for the Chronically Nice.
  1. After reading Anxious to Please I had insight into some of my mother's behavior. My memories include her obsessive baking of desserts and giving them away to coworkers, neighbors, doctors, anyone she had contact with. She often couldn't pay her bills but always had money to buy the ingredients for her gifts. It is obvious now that she was one of the original "chronically nice" people. She wanted to be liked by everyone (except perhaps family members who were locked into a relationship by blood). None of these people became real friends.

My husband also identified his father as one of the chronically nice, though he treated his wife very poorly. He gave big parties for extended family and acquaintances paying for literally truck loads of liquor. His dad also bought people (would be friends) gas for their cars. Generous to a fault? The family was not well to do, and his mother worked in a factory.

This book will, no doubt, give others insight into themselves and into friends and family. I suspect many people will recognize relatives, who might not have always been nice to them, but who gave away time and things to strangers in a quest to be liked.

    Dana Paulinski MSW

  2. Sure, it's good to be nice, but you may be "too nice." If you are clingy, care too much what others think of you and minimize the bad personalities of the people around you, then your niceness may be hurting you. Authors James Rapson and Craig English recommend seven practices that will put you on the road to a more balanced emotional life - many of these approaches will be familiar to readers who have engaged in any sort of meditation or self-awareness exercises. Lists, sidebars and quotes make the book's ideas easily accessible - although integrating these practices into your daily life will require some work. We recommend this book to self-help beginners who are tired of having sand kicked in their faces and wish to develop their tranquility and strength of character.

  3. In reading the cover description, I could identify with the book immediately. The author gives some helpful tips and exercises to learn to be more assertive. I was so impressed with the content, I sent it to others in my family who might enjoy the information.

  4. An excellent read if you're a chronic nice guy.. A great book if you want to become more confident, direct and effective in relationships.

    Michael A.

  5. I just happened to glance at this book while browsing in BAM the other day. Just the title made me look at it. I started reading it, and started quietly crying right there in Books-A-Million! (luckily it wasn't crowded) I read the examples and symptoms of a chronically nice person...and it's like they wrote the book about my life. It shocked me so much...I would call myself a 'textbook' case. Actually, it scared me a lot...thinking of process it will be, but intrigued me also. I think now I'm to the point where I can start really reading it and incorporating techniques, and trying to work out some big issues in my life.

Fortunately and unfortunately for me, my husband is a very assertive person...and just a couple of days after I first saw this book, he told me he can barely handle how I am like this, because he sees a stronger person in me.

When I read that it destroys relationships I thought 'Well, at least that part's not like me'...and was proven wrong 3 days later. I guess all I have to say is if you feel any way like I did, just do it: Get the book and look forward to the process. As cliche as it sounds, just admitting that I needed to work on some stuff in my life was a big step. But it doesn't require BIG steps. All you need is one little baby step at a time. I may not be MUCH better in 2 weeks, but check me out in 6 months...there will be progress :)

Good luck and God bless everyone out there
There's life to live so let's live it for once
    -Jan

5 comments about Manifest Your Destiny: The Nine Spiritual Principles for Getting Everything You Want.
  1. Manifest Your Destiny encourages you to step into your own PLACE OF POWER. It encourages you to do so and lets you know that it is your spiritual right to do so. Furthermore, this book gives you the techniques and information necessary for you to live your life in authentic power. "Never ever a victim " is the consciousness that grows out of reading and applying the information in this book. Truly awesome! Peace and love!

  2. Dyer thinks he's God. I'm tired of his constant criticism about everything and everyone. Now in this book if you want to look young or lose weight you're selfish and a bad person. Then in his lectures he says you can reverse time. He says whatever he wants to make money and I find him a hypocrite. Every principle is that he writes if from some great enlightenment in his life. Why didn't he pay the Catholic Church for stealing St. Francis' prayer. The catholic church is not happy with Wayne Dyer and that's something you can research on the net. He takes what he wants to make money off of innocent people.

  3. This book is one of the clearest, most concise spiritual books I have ever read. People who review it badly, must be Fundamentalist Christians or just negative human beings. If you read this book with an open heart and mind, it says it all. It gives you everything you need to be a happy, fulfilled human being and to manifest good in your life and the lives of others. It is so short and simple, I call it a Cookbook for life. Get it and read it again and again. But if you are a negative, dogmatic, closed minded person, don't get it. You won't understand it anyway. Otherwise get a copy for you and all your friends and loved ones. Peace and love to you, Wayne Dyer. God bless you!

  4. I have actually been through a long period of spiritual chaos. I have owned this book in the past. I also owned many other books that are of this kind. I thought that this book would be helpful because it was written by a psychologist. This book is actually useless. The best thing to do in times of turmoil is to keep things SIMPLY. That is the best solution. Think in a positive way but not to the extreme end that is advocated in all these self improvement books which are actually self DESTRUCTION books.
For those who question my opinion, I have been severely depressed for over 6 years. I stop being depressed back in 2003. I am currently a psychology major. REAL psychology books are VERY different from these SHAM books.
I hope my review have helped someone. If you have books like this, you should throw them away.

  5. I see this mindset everywhere... Prosperity Gospel. I find nothing wrong with using what you have. But going after things for pure financial gain and ignoring larger needs, turning your back on others... it is sinful. Sure, you can have a healthy self-esteem and positive relationships, but the focus of your life should not consists of entirely YOU and what YOU WANT. We need fewer spiritual brats in this world, demanding gimmegimmegimme of their gods.

4 comments about Socratic Circles: Fostering Critical And Creative Thinking In Middle And High School.
  1. I read this book over the summer on a whim and really enjoyed Matt's writing, his suggestions, and his format for socratic seminars. I have been to training on socratic seminars, but this book helped me more than anything. He gives you little steps to take on your way to a full blown successful seminar. His ideas help get your kids asking questions, discussing, thinking, and writing at a higher level. My discussions have improved in class, and even the kids who usually don't participate have gotten involved in discussing and sharing their thoughts.

  2. I'd read Michael Strong's "Habit of Thought" book, and was looking for more help in bringing socratic learning methods into my classes at my university. Despite coming from a high school english literature context, I found this book enormously helpful. I've been using the ideas in my graduate computer science class for over a month, with adaptations (e.g., using long research articles), and it has been very successful. The rubrics and forms included with the book are excellent as well. My students have become much better discussants and seem to be really enjoying the experience.

  3. A teacher friend of mine recommended this book to help with creating Socratic Circles/Seminars. It's fabulous! The author writes smoothly and easily for anyone to understand and follow. He has terrific examples and gives worksheets and reproducibles to help teachers. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who's new at conducting Socratic Seminars. It definitely helped me better than anything else.

  4. This is an excellent book! Loved the easy style in which it is written, practical/useful content, step-by-step examples... It has been a great source of inspiration which is already helping me make a difference in my jr. high classroom. My students are catching on to the concept and are showing great enthusiasm for Socratic Circles.

5 comments about Joy's Way, A Map for the Transformational Journey: An Introduction to the Potentials for Healing with Body Energies.
  1. I have been seeking and studying in the Personal/Spiritual Growth field for over 20 years and have explored many varied avenues. This book is written at the Intermediate level. It takes times to absorb the material and open to our own "spiritual inner voice", with honesty and unconditional love. After reading the book I was fortunate to attend Brugh's workshop and learn in more depth about chakras, the I Ching, dreamwork, and other spiritual tools. A great read, an honest and insightful teacher.

  2. A very worthwhile book for anyone interested in healing or alternative medicine.

  3. I attended a workshop with this dangerous charlatan. I was truly shocked by what I witnessed. This self-procliamed messiah had an almost hypnotic effect on his devotees. He appealed to their egos by telling them they are the "chosen ones" privy to the wisdom of the "ancient mystery schools." But there's a catch,to be a part of his special circle one must embrace thier darkness. "I am the darkness" is the mantra of those who follow this man. And the results are what you might expect puppet-like people who slump and then stand to attention depending on their master's pull of the string.

  4. I love this book and recommend it to others interested in healing and personal growth. Dr. Joy is a dedicated, sincere, and gifted healer and teacher. His workshops are a source of healing and inspiration for so many. I believe that the negative reviews here stem from an ignorant misunderstanding of the term "shadow", which is a Jungian term for the rejected parts of our personality, which can become toxic if not recognized and reassimilated. There is nothing at all "dark" or sinister about this book or this man. And "kundalini crisis"??? Please! Show me one and we'll talk. Please read this book and expand your healing horizons.

  5. I read this book back in 1984 and totally loved it. I am now rereading it after I have had to take greater responsibility for my health after an extended period of illness. Once again, I am finding it a great read, full of inspiration, and a great guidebook for healing.

5 comments about Where Did I Leave My Glasses?: The What, When, and Why of Normal Memory Loss.
  1. This book is a rare treat. It is both informative and entertaining. Many of us "of a certain age" worry that our memory lapses are a sign of early Alzheimer's. What a relief to be told that it is normal to forget where I put my glasses as long as I still know what function eyeglasses serve. I purchased several copies of this book to give to my friends as birthday gifts.

  2. Dear Martha: I hope you are reading your reviews. I'd like to get in contact with you to see if you remember something in particular. You were the first to use the term "second wave" in a 1968 NYT article. Do you remember how you learned of this term? I am researching the origins of the important and influential term. My email is edubois@ucla.edu. Thanks in advance.

  3. Where did I leave my glasses? Where did I leave my keys? Why did I come into this room... what was I after? What was I talking about? Did I call you or did you call me? This witty, well researched, clearly written analysis of what happens to our memory as we get older is comforting in the sense that it suggests we aren't losing our mind... just our memory... and it's gonna happen to EVERYONE, in greater or lesser degrees. Every time I turned a page, I said to myself, "Yeah, that happens to me... Yeah, that happens to me." The author is not talking about serious medical conditions, Alzheimers and the like...just our everyday garden variety run of the mill forgetfulness. Age, and the little grey cells shrink too, but CONSIDER THE ALTERNATIVE TO AGING! This is a very KOOL book!

  4. Excellent book. Easy to read with great sense of humor. If you are at the age of needing magnifying glasses, do read this. You will find the difference between losing it and normalcy explained. Made me feel much better to know I am not the only one with memory issues. I dont remember the title of the book, but it was great.

  5. The reason I bought this book was its recommendation in the AARP magazine. I have been very impressed with the way it breaks up the memory processes and explains why some things stick in our memories and others are gone with in seconds. The book contains a great deal of medical technical information but is written in such away that it is easy to understand even for a non medical person. There are a great many examples that are quite humorous. As you read it, it is easy to say to yourself "Mmmm been there done that: or, Oh that is why I do that." I have already given this book as a gift to one person and plan to give to several others.

5 comments about Arise from Darkness: What to Do When Life Doesn't Make Sense.
  1. Fr. Benedict Groeschel is a perceptive speaker and writer. His deft understanding of psychology and spirituality make a synthesis that is illuminating and understandable. No mere intellectual, he gives a wealth of examples for every topic he pursues. 'Arise from Darkness' gives clear treatment for the darker mysteries of life: death and suffering. Like other gifted authors, he takes the drudgery of the hardest aspects of life and delivers his audience with explanations and anecdotes providing meaning and healing. He doesn't ever back down from his topic. Even the captions and chapters tell a great deal of the story: "When Our Security Is Threatened," "When the Church Lets Us Down," and "When Death Robs Us". He is as direct as you can get. He has several honest diagnoses, including "We are afraid to live, and even more afraid to die." Insightful and ruggedly pedestrian, Fr. Groeschel and his book can help us live up to his title and "Arise from Darkness".

  2. I am 19 years old and I just lost my dad to cancer a few months ago. Fr. Groeschel has given me hope and wisdom through his clear and very understanding words. I can tell he is a man that truly does care for and love those like myself who are experiencing tragedy and pain like this.I strongly recommend it for anyone who has lost someone who was an essential person in their life.

  3. Father Benedict beautifully imparts all you need to know of how to overcome all your worries and doubts......An all around loving Father tells his children that God truly Loves you and will grant you all the grace you need to LOVE HIM !!!

  4. This book is well worth the time and effort of reading. It is a pleasure to read this book that can quikly and in perfect condition.

  5. Funny, humorous, and critical. Portrays the contrasting characters of holiness and unholiness, sinners and saints, and saneness and craziness of all the people in this world. Takes a look on how people try to achieve the heavenly ideals in a worldly community.

5 comments about The Heart & Soul of EFT and Beyond: A Soulful Exploration of the Emotional Freedom Techniques and Holistic Healing.
  1. Just wanted to say that I love the new book.
As a visual person, I like the pop of the bright white paper and the over all easy to scan headers.
The content page is most user friendly which makes referencing fast. It meets the task of an extension material that is interesting and additive. This book has a personal touch and supportive feel to it that connects to the reader past textbook information. The "Meet the EFT Experts" brings a solid connection to the impact of EFT globally. Thank you for creating this new resource.

  2. If you are new to Emotional Freedom Techniques, this book is for you. Having used EFT for awhile now, this book is the best that I have read on the subject. Its clear that the Mountrose's did indeed put their heart and soul into this one. It is well written, clear in detail, and well organized. From the essence of EFT, exploring the depths of the mind, to the special challenges and opportunities, this writing is upbeat and easy to read in spite of the complexity of material. The last part of this book by the EFT Experts illustrates the many ways that EFT can be used in the field of holistic medicine. If you're new to this technique or need a thorough refresher, this is the place to get it.

  3. While EFT can stand alone as one of today's most powerful, available-to-everyone energy healing techniques, the Mountroses demonstrate how to DEEPEN this process by accessing the healing power of one's heart and soul in order to "feel more connected to (one's) sense of wholeness"...which is true healing.

Along with clear-cut instructions, variations, tips, challenges and solutions for using EFT, this book takes us beyond by laying out a variety of additional elegant and powerful approaches. The combination and interchanging of these "tools" creates even more possibilities.

Best of all, Phillip and Jane wrote this book from their own heart and soul. It is delightful, uplifting, joyful, loving and fluid as well as clear and instructional - making it easy to read and available to practice...for everyone. Thank you for this gift.

  4. This book is an investigation of what is possible in the area of energetic healing. For anyone who has ever wanted to help really heal another being, this touches the core of that calling and resonates with a deep knowing that this potential can be activated. No hype, no glossy, no woo-woo, it is straight, genuine and truly inspiring.
As we move into a new paradigm of what is health and what is healing, individuals like Phillip and Jane are helping to make these possibilities alive and real.

  5. An informative and easy to read gem providing the deeper issues of EFT which I found invaluable in preparation to becoming an EFT practitioner.

5 comments about Makeup Your Mind.
  1. this book is for more advanced makeup artists who have grasp basic concepts already. it is more of fashion/glamour makeup, and talks more about contouring and highlighting. it can be used as a face chart or reference when you deal with different faces. the pictures are of very high quality, with all the details exposed. recommended for pros.

  2. I have already exchanged mine.Very nice quality of paper and pics, but:
    - it just shows very young models w/ pale pale complexions (that is, where makeup really shows easily);
    - it carries transparencies with the names of their colors aplied in every pic (what ridiculous propaganda!);
    - it is based on the fact that one simple item (like just a red lipstick, or just eyeliner or whatever) can change a whole look and that's all they show.
(So far, Auckwin's have been the best I've bought, I just love both of them!)

  3. This is a great book for beginners. The photos are dummy proof, and the plastic overlay explains everything without confusion. Fantastic. Good investment.

  4. I read all the reviews before I bought this book and found them to be quite equally negative and positive.I should have listened to the negative ones, because I was disappointed!I was looking for some new looks and techniques and all the looks in this book are really quite basic, even if you are a beginner at applying makeup I think you could recreate most of the looks in this book. The gray on white pages was small and very hard to read as well.If you are looking for a makeup book to teach you new ways of applying makeup check out Kevyn Aucoin or Robert Jones books.

  5. This book is definitely worth reading for those interested in makeup. However, many complaints stated by others are valid, such as the light, small type, in block paragraphs on white paper, is hard to read. The "before" photos can be a little disturbing because they are nearly life-size, and despite the statement that they haven't been retouched, there are no blood vessels visible in ANY of the models' eyes, making them look oddly lifeless (this effect is compounded by their flat expressions). No doubt that reminds some readers of "The Stepford Wives." Many of the models are extremely freckled - I wonder if that is representative of the human population to the degree you see it in this book. It does appear that the models' skin and facial features haven't been altered; after looking at them for awhile, I came away thinking, "THESE people aren't pretty enough to be models!" It made me start to think NO ONE is really beautiful - we're just being conned by the "beauty industry," Hollywood, advertising, etc. Also, the models' names aren't labeled on their photos. The text does have some useful tips and information, and there are short descriptions for application of the products for each of the looks in the back of each section. The most useful sections to me were the ones on neutrals and pastels. All of the other looks would have to be modified for use in the real world. I found one flaw in the book - one of the plastic overlays was clearly the wrong one for the page. The instructions at the back of the section made it possible to deal with that, so it wasn't a significant problem. Also, the slipcase is very thin and fragile; mine was already cracked when it arrived. No wonder used copies of this never seem to have a slipcase.

3 comments about Happiness for Two: 75 Secrets for Finding More Joy Together.
  1. Four and a half INTRIGUING Stars!! A very interesting, approachable self-help book with lots of solid advice! Author/lecturer/interior designer/philosopher Alexandra Stoddard's latest book, "Happiness for Two", 'ups the ante' from her last book, "You Are Your Choices" which dealt with advice on individual satisfaction in living "the good life". The book on "Happiness for Two" begins with a 3 sentence dedication to "Peter" that is so heartfelt, specific, and sincere that couples who are not able to currently write such a salutation to their own lover may want to dive into this book headfirst to find out what they've been missing. And as I stated in the review of her previous book, we men benefit from hearing the thoughts of a keen-thinking woman, happily-married for over 34 years, who has already dealt with complex interpersonal relations in her own life. BTW, Peter returns the compliments with his own note, which is entirely in keeping with Ms Stoddard's approach that couples should return compliments.

Ms Stoddard uses short topical essays, 75 of them this time. Will it work for everyone? Much of it should. She maintains "Happiness for two requires two sensitive, loving souls who understand their own potential for wholeness individually". That alone may exclude some people, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't give this book & counseling & their religion & whatever else, a chance to make them better as a couple. A wide range of topics are covered in the book. From "Treat Each Day As Though It Could Be Your Last" (seems so simple but do we do it?) to "Go On Vacations Alone, Together" (great idea!) to "Assume More Responsibility at Home" (can Alexandra really spackle and tile? I'm impressed!) to "....Spirituality" (somewhat of a disappointment) to "Kindness and Diplomacy...." (spot on) and finally "Your Happiness Is Up To You" (a great wrap-up of ideas with a startling concept about happiness based on Alexandra's research). Then there are Chapters 22, 32, 44, and 52 which are 'biggies' that I enthusiastically agree with, but I'll let the reader discover them on their own. I don't agree with everything in the book, but most of the time she is on target. Read it and then pass this book on to that special person in your life and remember YMMV (your mileage may vary). This book is highly informative and may generate some controversy. Highly Recommended. "Love & Live Happy", indeed. Four and a half INSPIRING Stars! (This review is based on a secure eBook digital download)

  2. This wasn't as insightful as many of the other books by Alexandra Stoddard. It was an easy read, and I did find it enjoyable. I expected a little more depth. All around it wasn't a bad way to spend a rainy afternoon. I'm ready for another decorating book from her.

  3. My spouse and I bought this book at one of our favorite boutique style stores. We have an amazing relationship already, but we know there are always ways to make it even better, especially when we easily get caught up in the daily grind of work and raising our three kids. After we purchased it we decided to read a chapter or two each night to one another while curled up in bed.

The book is insightful and inspiring. Some chapters simply confirm what we already know and do, while others have helped us to express our thoughts to one another better. In it we can see our own strengths and weaknesses and how even the simpliest thing can have a profound effect on our relationship. It's already inspired us to do things to boost our happiness both individually and as a couple. Alone, together as Alexandra would say.

For those with children still at home, it's good to keep in perspective that the book is written by a woman with children who are already grown so the author's suggestions may seem a bit 'off' at times even if we still agree with what she has to say in general.

Overall, we enjoy the book, feel inspired, and it's an easy read.
