  1. Ending Aging: The Rejuvenation Breakthroughs That Could Reverse Human Aging in Our Lifetime
This is a fascinating book and a must read for every scientist and engineer. The thesis is reasonable and well reasoned by a very capable author and scientist. Every ancient culture reports a golden age before the flood in which humans lived as long as 1000 years. In my computer architecture course I ask the students to estimate the number of bits the human brain can store, evalutating the neuron as an analog element representing many bits, and also including chemical synapses. The answers range from 10**17 to 10**19 bits. Then assuming that color vision of motion is the most challenging brain function I have them estimate how many teraflops it would take a supercomputer to equal that function. Now, if the brain functions at that level 16 hours a day and rests (sleeps) 8 hours a day how long will it take to fill it. The answer is about 1000 years! But what about the motivation? Naturally, almost everyone wants to live a little longer (in good health, of course), but 1000 years? Remember the Ancient Sybil at Locarno who asked the gods for immortality and got it. Her cry after only 500 years was: "I want to die." Of course, with Dr. Aubrey's theraputic strategy one could simply discontinue the anit-aging therapy and then die gracefully in about 50 years.
    Peter C. Patton
    Professor of Engineering

  2. Ending Aging may one day be regarded as having made history. And it is fun, provoking, and informative.

Its starting point itself is eye-opening: aging isn't built into our bodies, it only results from a gradual breakdown that evolution hasn't found efficient to equip us against, picking reproduction as the preferred path for gene survival. De Grey adds that this breakdown can be fixed. Science will soon be able to engineer eternal youth, he asserts - yes, not just slow aging down but actually set back the clock. This would apparently require fixing decay in seven broad areas, for which he details the solutions. To me, a complete layman, four of the proposed solutions seem in the process of advanced medical research, two look farther off, and one, dealing with cancer, sounds somewhat unpalatable if perhaps credible (requiring regular cell transplants to a multiplicity of organs).

De Grey is not originally a biologist, but a computer programmer. He says his outsider status is an advantage. Sounds suspicious? Perhaps, but he published revolutionary research on the DNA of mitochondria (the part of the cell that generates the energy on which we live) and their role in aging; this was peer-reviewed and acclaimed by the scientific establishment. He was awarded a PhD for it at Cambridge, where he works.

Ending Aging says its goals can be achieved in 25 years. Considering the impotence of big pharma and the propensity to blunders of public government (viz. the stem cell controversy, which is detailed in the book), this sounds doubtful. But incredibly, one big hurdle to pursuing the requisite research seems to be that a number of people don't actually want to end aging. This is where De Grey turns from scientist to advocate. Apparently, the fear is that ending aging would cause grave disruption to the environment and existing social structures. So what?

  3. Clear and detailed road-map towards finding a cure for aging.

Aubrey De Grey has writen a fascinating analysis of the specific problems and challanges that we need to overcome in order to win the "war on aging". This is neither science fiction nor a vision for a distant future. Humans can obtain the ability to stay young forever within the next 20-30 years. This book explains how.

  4. This book contains very important points which should be considered by everyone who cares for himself and others.

Research in healthy life extension, which means curing diseases and fixing aging, is THE most important thing for humanity to do for itself, as what are life if they end?

In the book very realistic scientific views which show us how to move towards fixing aging and other important diseases, stay alive, healthy and young forever.

  5. This book makes a strong argument that the most important medical need in developed countries is to cure the damage associated with aging, rather than to combat the diseases which become serious as a result of that damage. It outlines a set of solutions which, if they can be implemented, look like they would add at least a decade or two to healthy lifespans.
All of the solutions look like they have a reasonable chance of being implemented within 20 years. But the probability of all of them working within that time is a good deal lower than the probability of any one solution working, and there's no obvious way to analyze whether we can get significant health benefits without implementing all of the solutions.
The authors seem somewhat overconfident about most aspects of their proposed solutions, but that doesn't affect the substance if their arguments very much. Even a small chance of postponing death and disability is worth a good deal of effort.
The parts of the solutions that appear hardest are the ones that rely on techniques similar to what are already being attempted by mainstream scientists (genetic engineering to add and delete genes from most cells in the body, massive use of stem cells, and moving enzymes across the blood-brain barrier). My impressions about the effort that has been put into these techniques and the results that have been produced so far suggest that at least one of these is likely to take much longer than the book asks us to hope for. The book gives one clear example of important research not living up to the hype surrounding it when it gives arguments that most cancer research is directed toward modestly postponing cancer rather than providing a full solution to cancer. I see no obvious way for a layman to tell whether the authors are relying on similarly overhyped research.
So even though the book gives convincing arguments that the goals of medical research ought to be reframed to focus on aging as the primary threat to be solved, it's far from conclusive about whether that should imply a large change in actual research. It may be that the hardest and most valuable tasks are the ones that are already being worked on. Or it may be that one of the critical tasks is sufficiently hard that the most important need is to invent tools that are substantially more sophisticated than what's used in existing research (i.e. that we most need something more radical that what's proposed in the book, such as nanomedicine).

5 comments about Ladies Who Launch: Embracing Entrepreneurship & Creativity as a Lifestyle.
  1. Just gave this book to a friend who recently started her own business... the perfect gift!

  2. This book is a complete re-hash of "you can do it" pop-psychology. It offered absolutely nothing new in terms of real concrete getting things done. The repeated references to "take time for yoga" and have parties to sell your products to friends is annoying.

The surveys and "studies" mentioned in the book are invalid in terms of how they were conducted; no marketing expert or sociologist would give them any credence.

The book appears to be a marketing tool for the author's own business, a franchise of Incubators which cost hundreds of dollars to join. Don't waste your money; the book itself is an advertisement for a poor product.

  3. Not only am I a LWL member in Los Angeles and am very grateful for Amy Swift and leader Jen Sincero. I bought the book and recommend it to all of my girlfriends that are frustrated in their overpaid corporate jobs. Hard to believe that the almighty dollar does not make for a women's happiness. Ladies Who Launch gives you the courage to launch from within, plan your exit stategy and first and foremost believe in yourself. Like I wrote above, if only this book and this nationally recognized networking group were around when I began my business, I would not have felt so isolated. The growing numbers of women that are choosing freedom in their hearts and their souls versus "working for the man" are and will reap what they sow. Like Alicia Key's sings "I am superwomen, yes I am" The LWL team Victoria, Beth and Amy and all the other leaders certainly are and if their isn't an incubator by you just yet, purchase this book and become a leader in your own area. I thought fashion moved fast, I think Ladies Who Launch might move faster.

  4. I found this book trite and a waste of time. There are much better books to consult. The website for Ladies Who Launch is also pretty much worthless, unless you want to read about the success of celebrities and such. Their organization isn't as wide-spread and helpful as they would have you believe.

I didn't find anything that was of help. And as others have mentioned, some of the language in the book was sickening.

    I'm just not impressed.

  5. I found this book to bevery validating of my own journey starting my Business & Life Coaching practice a few years ago. Imagine it, Speak it, Do it, and Celebrate it, are simple ways to remeber the content. I encourage all my female clients in business to read this book.

5 comments about Chicken Soup for the Soul: Children with Special Needs: Stories of Love and Understanding for Those Who Care for Children with Disabilities.
  1. A wonderful book, often funny, always comforting in that I was reassured we WILL get through this (whatever the "this" is at any given moment!!) A great book for anyone who KNOWS someone with a special-needs child, to have a better understanding of where our time and energy can go.

  2. A warm and genuine compilation of inspiring stories from those that have walked the walk...sure to bring a smile to anyone who has worked with children with disabilities, and a tear to those who are just starting on this journey.
The Bubel/Aiken Foundation receives a share of the proceeds from this book~what's not to like?

  3. Wonderful book! I love that the beginning starts with the story Welcome to Holland. I have a daughter with special needs and reading Welcome to Holland expresses what having a child with special needs can be like. My daughter is such a beautiful blessing to our family and a spot of sunshine to all who meet her. You could be having the worst day and a smile from her will turn you around. You can't help but smile back.
I would recommend this to anyone who has a child with special needs no matter what the age. It will inspire you. To any one who knows someone,is friends with someone, loves someone or cares for someone with special needs you will be inspired and touched reading the wonderful stories.

  4. I was so excited to receive this book. I read it cover to cover in 3 days. The stories are all very good. They help "connect" anyone who knows or cares for a child with "special needs". I would see little glimpses of my 8 year old son in different stories and if not the "same" I could relate to the situations and the emotions. On those really rough days, it helps to know that there are others out there that know just how you feel. It gives the inspiration to keep going. "Special Needs" kids definately are SPECIAL.........they help us to remember what is important. Thank you for this collection of stories.

  5. I was so excited to get this book right when it was released but was generally disappointed in it. There were many VERY good stories that I absolutely loved, but overall there was something about it that lacked the really personal connection and everyday stories. I found myself skipping over stories and still never finished the book to the end. I have 2 kids with special needs one with Down syndrome and one currently undergoing testing for Autism, and I SO desperately wanted to Love this book.

I guess I expected it to be written from a Caregivers perspective (parents, grandparents, teachers, etc). When it seemed like more than half of the contributers have already had their stories published by Chicken Soup books or other big name publications, not just your average person. And I caught the names of 2 contributers in this book that each have 2 of their stories in this special needs edition. (many already published in MANY other Chicken soup books)

To me it almost feels like the creators of Chicken Soup sent out a staff email asking for any stories involving a person with special needs... I remember reading one story written about a typical person's high school days and her encounter with a girl with special needs and what she wishes she would have talked to her. Nothing about reaching out to her and building a friendship, even if years later. As a parent, I would have loved to read about how this person affected a persons life, not how she felt guilty about being afraid of a disabilty (that's exactly why I want to shelter my children)- Didn't leave a warm and fuzzy feeling. But I guess her article was accepted because her career happens to center on people with disabilites???
I know there are millions of people out there that could contribute more personally touching stories. I just wanted more "average people" doing great things stories. Just by compararing random biograpies of the stories I wanted more people like the contributor Chynna Tamara Laird- average mom advocating for her child. In the bio of contributer S. Thompson it states "she has had stories in 10 Chicken soup books" and her job is writing, not advocating for disabilities or living it first hand.

It does have some great stories, but I just couldn't relate to the book overall and I expected to not want to put it down. I felt like I would read 2 good stories then 2 stories that lacked connection.... SORRY... I really wish I could Love it.

5 comments about You'll See It When You Believe It: The Way to Your Personal Transformation.
  1. I am writing this review after seeing "The Secret" on DVD and browsing that book. I remembered reading those exact same concepts (which work, by the way) in many of Wayne Dyers books. In my opinion Dyer far surpasses all the other gurus for a couple of reasons.

First of all, his perspective focuses on giving out or sending out love, practicing forgiveness and of course visualizing to manifest rather than just this "genie granting wishes" attitude that I find so offensive in other law of attraction oriented works.

Dyer explains the whole process and leaves you with a very good feeling, not a cheesy, warm fuzzy feeling or a quick fix but a genuine "aha" type of feeling.

Also, he presents the material with careful thought and sincerity, and many many detailed examples. What you won't find are the many insults to one's intelligence in the form of a book cover designed to look like some stupid ancient scroll, no ridiculous marketing campaign, and none of the pretentiousness of the others who claim the info is somehow secret. It's not. Dyer also has the decency and the confidence to not present the concepts as if they were given to him by some bizarre spirit guide, which I vehemently do not believe it.

  2. This book will change your life. It spooked me, but the changes I did allow have lasted almost 20 years. Even I still can't believe what the power of thought could do. Some are simple things; I ALWAYS get a great parking space, but that's an inconsequential thing. I realized I had and was able to stop an addictive behavior. But the spookiest thing, which doctors say cannot happen, was I cured a disease; scared me and I never did it again. I had plantars warts and when I was ready for them to be gone, with my entire mind and heart I insisted that they stop and they were gone the next day, plus they have never come back. "Spontaneous remission" is the term doctors use, but they really don't think it can happen. I just nod my head in amazement. Thank you Dr Dyer.

  3. The hardcopy version of this book was the very first book I read in the spiritual growth category. To this day, nearly two decades later, I still look back on it as a pivotal, life-changing work. The chapter on "Forgiveness" in particular is the best content regarding that subject that I have ever come across. For this reason and more, I include "You'll See It When You Believe It" as a "must-read" in the recommended reading list included within my own book.

  4. I have actually been through a long period of spiritual chaos. I have owned this book in the past. I also owned many other books that are of this kind. I thought that this book would be helpful because it was written by a psychologist. This book is actually useless. The best thing to do in times of turmoil is to keep things SIMPLY. That is the best solution. Think in a positive way but not to the extreme end that is advocated in all these self improvement books which are actually self DESTRUCTION books.
For those who question my opinion, I have been severely depressed for over 6 years. I stop being depressed back in 2003. I am currently a psychology major. REAL psychology books are VERY different from these SHAM books.
I hope my review have helped someone. If you have books like this, you should throw them away.

  5. Seems as though Wayne just randomly pieced together this CD. ABSOLUTELY nothing like the book which I value beyond words.

5 comments about The Courage To Trust: A Guide To Building Deep And Lasting Relationships.
  1. Good at helping to understand why we react in a protective manner when we feel threatened.

  2. For any of you who have been hurt--by a dysfunctional family situation or an adult betrayal--this book is helping me to connect how the past is inhibiting me from having all life has to offer. After reading the first 20 pages, I had a few tactics and goals to make a difference in my life. It also confirmed for me that self-trust is the basis for the other types. It's well worth the investment in time and money.

  3. The issue of trust -- of others and of myself -- comes up all the time. Whom do I really trust, and how do I build trust with people whom I would like to trust more? How much can I safely let back in people who have betrayed my trust in the past? What moves can I make that will make me more trustworthy? Cynthia Wall's exercises are often helpful in clarifying underlying blocks, allowing me to go much deeper into the real issues.

I am in a process of exploring this issue with my women's group this year; it's a very rich and scary topic. The Courage to Trust is a valuable, compassionate guide for us in this exploration. I think anyone who has ever been betrayed or disappointed by someone will find helpful support in this beautifully and thoughtfully written book.

  4. I recently had someone come back into my life that I lied to by omission. Our second time around he was having trouble trusting me. I told a white lie and he blew up. I was sitting there scratching my head thinking what's his problem. I decided to order some books about trust to get a handle on my issue with lying. This book has shown me why I choose to not be truthfull all the time. I am trying to protect myself from how I think the person will react by knowing the truth. I'm not trustfull or trustworthy. I this book is really helping me see a better way to be.

  5. This book is a great start for people wanting to explore this subject.

However, if you have serious trust issues, the book may come across as trite and trivializing. Ms. Wall's feel-good platitudes may not apply across the board. Survivors of severe abuse and betrayal might want to look elsewhere.

5 comments about The Angry Heart: Overcoming Borderline and Addictive Disorders : An Interactive Self-Help Guide.
  1. As a mental health therapist who specializes in treating BPD, I use this book in my BPD Group Therapy. The women may not recognize their own behaviors in themselves, but they can see their behaviors in others. The excerises are great and when done in a group setting, they offer support and validation from other members.

Although other research or treatments are not mentioned, it is a tool that can work well for some BPD people. I have found it helpful and so have the women who have used the book. I do use DBT at times along with the book, but for the most part, the book is the foundation of the Group.

    D.B., M.A., LPC, WY

  2. I really love this book and it's a huge help for my recovery. I especially like that you can contact the authors and get feedback about your exercises and recovery. The exercises and journal entries are painful, but the authors explain that in order to fully recover, you have to practice "extinction." I highly recommend this book to anyone with Borderline Personality or other similar disorders.

  3. I read this book to better understand my now ex-boyfriend. It helped me to not take personally his actions and gave me understanding and empathy. It will help a loved one of BPD to listen and react in ways that can help facilitate the journey to recovery. Although the book could not save our relationship, I am hopeful because he is now reading this book. The book offers steps to recovery through detailed exercises. The authors covered every area to guide the person with BPD to recovery. Awesome book!

  4. This book is an excellent guide for understanding borderline personality disorder and addictive behaviors. It clearly outlines the recovery steps someone with these disorders must take to live their life again. This book is very helpful to read as a family member of someone with bpd, as it gives you insight into how to have a relationship with someone recovering from borderline and other addictive behaviors. The book is well written and easy to read with practical advise.

  5. Every therapist who treats people with borderline personality disorder should use this book. It's an organized way to move through steps necessary for the recovery process. Would also work great in a group therapy setting with an "AA" type approach. I would recommend this to anyone recovering from this disorder.

5 comments about Empty Cradle, Broken Heart: Surviving the Death of Your Baby.
  1. This book was recommended to me over a year ago when I lost my daughter. It has taken me that long to get around to ordering it, I wish I had of much earlier. Fantastic book.

  2. Our first child, our son Wyatt, was stillborn and it has been the most devastating event of our entire lives. I bought this book after a fellow angel parent recommended it and absolutely loved it. It is so "nice" to see all the thoughts and feelings you have after losing a child right there in print. It makes you realize you're not going crazy, that those thoughts and feelings are legitimate, and that you are not alone. I carried this book everywhere with me and would highlight phrases that were personal to me. It really helped me understand the loss of our son and give me strength and courage to go on with our lives while still keeping his memory alive. I'm so sorry to those of you having to look at this book, but I hope it can help you as much as it has helped me.

  3. After our son was stillborn in April of 2006, we were looking for any support we could find. We went to the beach and I read this book out loud to my husband cover to cover in 1 day. Everything we were feeling was covered in this book. It was to the point and very validating. We referred to this book daily. I have purchased several of these for our support group and the hospital where our son was born. We felt like this was something parents should leave with and for that matter a book the nursing and hospital staff should have as required reading. During our darkest days this book helped us work through the many emotions that come with the death of a child. If you have suffered the same fate or know someone who has I highly recommend this book.

  4. After our fourth daughter was stillborn January 2008, I thought that no one or nothing could relate to how I felt. I was wrong after I read this book. This book accurately describes
my feelings of guilt, helplessness, fears, etc. It is very comforting to know that I am not crazy for thinking the way I do.I have read a lot of books on this subject (which is so sad for it happens way too often to so many people) but this one is the best so far. I am going
to recommend it to a local hospital for anyone who (god forbid), has this tragic event in their lives as well. Deb Davis writes knowing my thoughts
and my questions, realizing at the same time that we will never know the answer why after 36 healthy weeks, her spirit was chosen to leave this earth. I love you so much...... and miss you...... we will meet again someday.

  5. I purchased this book on the recommendation of a friend after the loss of my son, which was the culmination of a series of increasingly cruel and difficult miscarriages. More than any other book, this one helped me sort through all of my losses and deal with the grief and make some sort of sense of it. I especially liked how the book, although it has a religious tone, isn't overly preachy and the chapter for husbands was also something my husband thought was good. I have passed my copy on to a friend who lost her son, but since then have encountered a number of friends and colleagues who, sadly, also have had similar experiences. I have taken to having an extra copy at all times so that when a friend does open up to me about a loss (I'm very open about my son) I have one to pass on.

5 comments about The Confidence Plan: How to Build a Stronger You.
  1. I got this book because even though I am quite confident in the work place I tend towards lacking it at times in my personal life. The book is simple to follow, doesn't spend lots of time having you "analyze" your past but focuses on where you want to be and where you are. It has simple exercises to nudge you towards your goal of having greater confidence in whatever area of your life you find it lacking. I highly recommend.

  2. I had high expectations for this book, based on the reviews that I had read on amazon. The author has done a great job in ensuring that most, if not all, of his chapters are backed up by research and studies. I found that this gives his advice context and also greater credibility. Another great feature of this book is the number of exercises that Ursiny provides for the reader, both throughout the book and also the extra section at the end. This helps to ensure that the reader is able to put into practice the advice and tips that the author recommends.

There were a few things that I did not like about the book though. Firstly, despite being over 300 pages long, I felt that most of the chapters did not go into enough detail. Each chapter is almost like an introduction to a topic that is not followed by a more indepth analysis or discussion of the points. The author seems to skim over a number of different topics and I felt that every chapter of the book could have had a lot more substance. Secondly, I felt that the book lost some credibility with what seemed to be constant references to God and religion. It is clear that Ursiny is passionate about his religion - something that I do not criticize - but it undermines the credibility of the arguments and points for those who are not religious.

I think that a lot of people will be able to get a lot out of this book. I do not feel that this is the best confidence book that I have read, but it is well written and is an enjoyable read.

  3. This is one of the best books I've bought in a long time, and I buy a lot of books! Tim Ursiny has a really interesting perspective on how to build confidence. This book is not full of the obvious or "common sense" stuff, but instead is really much more in depth. There are exercises after each chapter that you figure out just how to relate the lesson to your life. This book isn't just for someone that is struggling with confidence, but for someone that really wants to take a healthy level of confidence to the next level!

  4. This book talks on all the types and definitions on confidence. If you want to write an exam on confidence, get this book. I could not read more than half of this stuff! :-(....For me it was too much of theory.

  5. it tells you somethings that you can do which are really helpful. The tips that you get from it are not all necessary

  1. I have many of Harry's books, and love him! He is such a sincere person and gives his all to us the reader.
Naturally if you have ordered this book, you are in a situation that you may be feeling concerned that your mind is feeling fuzzy, or that you want to keep your brain young and vibrant. You will not be dissapointed in this book at all.
I especially liked how positive the books overall feeling is. That our brains shouldn't be deteriorating and actually should be sharper than ever. I have tried the techniques in the book, and as long as I apply them, I have noticed an improvement! I now know my Bible books forwards, and backwards. Have memorized several scriptures, and am partially thru the Sermon on The Mount.
Our brains are wonderfully made, and we should take care of it. So go ahead, whatever you decide to memorize, it will help you in middle age and beyond. Thanks Harry for the encouragment and help to sharpen up!

  2. a marvelous and fun book by Harry Lorayne. I would recommend it for everone. All ages will take something good and beneficial from this book and in many cases it is potentially life changing.
    Thanks Harry

  3. I had read a Harry Lorayne book as a teenager many many years ago and found the techniques useful then.

This book allowed me to revisit his lessons as an elder retired physician and is helping me to cope with the usual senior moments that we all encounter.

    Highly recommended.

  4. This is a great book. I notice I'm not forgetting things as readily as I did. I can now tell you my safe deposit box number, my drivers license number, my car plates, and various phone numbers. It's also helped me to remember people's names. Great buy. Other programs want hundred(s) of bucks to improve your memory and prevent altzimer's. This does the same thing.

    Leah Levitt

  5. I heard the 3 CDs and immediately I started using his methods on improving memory. His methods have helped me to increased my memory in all aspects right away. The exercises are easy to follow and the applications practical. I recommend this book/CDs to anyone who wants to improve his memory.

  1. This book works well for me, it is a straightforward book and Dr. Willey was great in replying when I emailed him with questions. Very satisfied.

  2. For the beginner this book is indispensible as it introduces you to the basics of bodybuilding from a dieting and measuring standpoint. I found that even myself learned a few things that if asked previously would or should have seemed like common knowledge. If youve been in the game for a long time now you prob wont get much from it as scientifically it is very basic and simple. Overall i think worthy of a place in your library.

  3. I am using the title as a "hook", because I thought it was a really novel idea to include this in a book, and I enjoyed the author's ideas. The text doesn't flow extremely smoothly, but the chapters are short and most readers aren't expecting a literary masterpiece.
Interesting ideas, concise, specific, and to the point. Down to earth yet far-reaching in scope.
One of several recommended books to build your body without steroids.

  4. While this book has some good information regarding general body building ideas it is the best book ever written on how food is a drug and if used correctly can be extremely effective in building muscle. This is no fad diet, it is the real deal. Jay Cutler (Mr. Olympia) wrote his testimonial on the back recommending this book and stating that Dr. Willey's diet principles follow exactly what he does on a day to day basis. So if you don't like my opinion it is hard to argue with Mr. Olympia. Great book for anyone trying to put on lean mass while losing fat mass whether you are a seasoned pro or a beginner. I also highly recommend his other book "What does your doctor look like naked." While the books target audience is more the general public it still has some extremely powerful information on how food is a drug and how it can benefit us if we understand how it works.

  5. After reading the reviews, I thought I would learn a lot from this book.....I must have underestimated my understanding of bodybuilding nutrition. Like others have said here, you can get all the information in bodybuilding forums. This book is spot on for people that know little about nutrient timing. The book does offer decent example meal plans for different goals (fat loss, muscle gain, or both). If you are a intermediate or veteran fitness enthusiast, save your money. If you are new to the bodybuilding world, get this book....I recommend going to Dr. Willey's website and downloading the ebook (which is only 20 dollars and you get an immediate download).
