4 comments about Self-Wealth : Creating Prosperity, Serenity, and Balance in your Life.
- When I was in my early twenties I bought my first "personal development" book, written by Anthony Robbins. Little did I know this would start a long journey of studying self-help litterature, listening to motivational audiotapes, and even attending a few inspirational lectures and seminars. Now, with all that I've read and all that I've studied, I must say that Self Wealth has probably had the most profound impact on me to date. And I say this even though it's been less than a week since I finished the book! Maybe it's because the timing and the message was right for me just now. Maybe it's the result of the book's powerful simplicity.. In any case, I really feel like "I got it!" Honestly, this book really tied it all together for me and I am sure it will be a tremendous asset for anyone. No matter what your background, occupation, age, sex or location may be, this book can really help you change, reach your goals and live more abundant and balanced lives. I know this without a doubt... Still, YOU need to USE the principles and ideas that are presented. In Self Wealth you will also find tips and excercises to help you do just this. Again, it's simple, it's easy and it's practical. It is all this and more... It's one GREAT, GREAT book!
- Three of my favorate personal development books are The Power of Positive Thinking, Think and Grow Rich, and The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. Now I have four. Self-Wealth restates some time proven self-development principles combined with alot of very inciteful new material. This is a book you can't put down, and I know I got more information from my second read. Great stuff!
- This book is a clearly written account of how ballance is truly your goal on your journey to achieving your ideal state of who you want to be. Yarnell touches on some beautiful truths and principles here that anyone can use no matter what walk of life or profession. It is truly a must-have in your success library.
- First of all, there was something about the writing style of this book that made it a strain to read. I don't know if it's because it's the combined writing of three authors, but for a book that's not that long, and a subject that is not that difficult, I found myself struggling to get through. There are also some annoying little spelling and factual errors, like calling the legendary motivational speaker Earl Nightingale, Bill Nightingale. Nevertheless, there is enough of value here that it's worth the read.
The authors give a different take on the idea of motivation to succeed, which is to find a goal bigger than yourself. Accomplish your goals not strictly for yourself but to go outside of yourself and to share your wealth with others or to fund a charity. Most other wealth gurus have this as a by-product of success rather than as an objective. The authors also focus on the improtance of controlling your own thoughts and determinig your own self-worth, and not to rely on what others think. A lot of what they say has been said by others, and perhaps more clearly and in a more interesting way, but there is enough here that it's worth going through.

3 comments about The Power of Self-Esteem: An Inspiring Look At Our Most Important Psychological Resource.
- According to Nathaniel Branden in this book, self-esteem is...
1) Confidence in our ability to think and cope with the basic challenges of life 2) Confidence in our right to be happy, the feeling of being worthy, deserving, entitled to assert our needs and wants, and to enjoy the fruits of our efforts. However, he seems to focus mostly on #1 (and at that, the first part of #1, our ability to think), and little or not at all on our ability to cope, or #2 our right to be happy, etc. Most of the book is about defining self-esteem, much less about where it comes from, or how to get it or repair it (he states this as the purpose in the introduction, to be fair). Nonetheless, I got a new perspective on self-esteem. I learned it's not just "self-love", but confidence in our MIND, that is, our ability to understand our lives, ourselves, and the world, and therefore to make wise choices that lead to success in reaching our goals, if we are committed to the truth, the facts, and perceiving and accepting reality to the best of our ability. It helped me understand why I have done as well as I have in the face of childhood trauma; because deep down I had a shred of faith that life could be better, and that I was smart enough to make sense of the chaos around me, if I learned enough and applied my mind enough.
- I totally agree with the first review of the paperback version - Dr. Branden concentrates on defining self esteem, and goes into great detail how it can be destroyed during childhood, but doesn't give a clue how to go about repairing it.
The lectures (and that's what these tapes are: recorded during one of his lecture series on an unknown date and probably abridged) seem to be addressing an audience of psychiatry students. His sentence structure is complicated and unwieldy, and sometimes difficult to understand, even for a college-educated person. It's not entertainment. Finally, he winds up with a discussion of relationships that seems to start out with the assumption that most women are still housewives and are subservient to their man. I'm a man, but I was shaking my head at his old-school regard for women. He talks like it was discovered only recently that women have any intellect. Not a good tape if you want to get fast answers to improving yourself. Buy it only if you are interested in the deeper roots of a lack of self-esteem, from an academic standpoint. Even then, you'd probably be better off buying the paperback and saving your time and cash.
- I picked this book up because I greatly respect (if not entirely agree with) the philosophies of Ayn Rand and enjoyed Branden's revision of 'My Years With Ayn Rand'. I was expecting another fresh look at the self, something detailed, something useful. I was sorely disapointed.
Anyone who has had any exposure to Rand's Objectivist philosophies or ever thought for themselves at all will find this book incredibly dull. Thankfully, it's written in short bursts of a pharagraph or two at a time, seperated by various repetitive headers, unfortunately, the content of each paragraph burst is just as repetitive as the headers. Meant for the ignorant, if you have any sense of self-worth whatsoever, this book will be of no use to you - there's nothing new there.

4 comments about New Millennium Magic : A Complete System of Self-Realization (Llewellyn's High Magick Series).
- Tyson presents here a complete symbology and philosophy of ritual magic. Contrary to neo-pagan treatments of magic, Tyson's has a philosophically monotheistic viewpoint, which recognizes pagan gods only as limited views of the Unmanifest (God). This is in accordance with his sources -- The Golden Dawn and original texts of Renaissance occultism.
Tyson's practice of "correcting" traditional sources in order to achieve a more coherent, logical system will annoy traditionalists, but it is always well argued. A few very minor factual errors creep in, but on the whole Tyson's research is exceptional. One complaint that could be made is that Tyson is long on theory and short on practice; long chapters on symbolism fill half the book, and only after that does one find any information on what to *do* with the symbolism. It might have been useful to reverse this order, so when people got to the section on symbology they'd have some idea what the use of it was. If there's one thing that annoys about Tyson's attitude, I would say it was "sanctimoniousness." He is unusually concerned with the grim and terrible consequences which will follow if one does not use these Great Powers with Great Responsibility. Perhaps he feels these warnings are necessary. His section on Telesmatic Images (which basically turns on its head the usual practice of image-making as described in Israel Regardie's _Golden Dawn_) was one of the best parts of the book, in my opinion. A friend of mine who is a Chaos Magician (and doesn't like Tyson much) suggests that the book in general and this section in particular proves that Tyson is really a Chaos Mage in denial. Overall, I'd say that anyone who, like me, happens to get drunk on theory and intellectualizing, and who likes to draw on primary sources, would really enjoy this book. Someone with a more practical bent, or who doesn't like those primary sources questioned and reanalyzed, should look elsewhere -- perhaps Nancy Watson's "Practical Solitary Magic." Oh, one last praise of Tyson in general and this book in particular: He does not follow Aleister Crowley's archaizing spelling of "Magic" as "Magick."
- I really enjoyed this book. Nowhere else was I able to find discussion of the fundamental concepts that most (if not all) major religions of the world draw on. After reading it I began to understand how religions share commonalities at some point in their development. I wasn't looking for books on magickal correspondances or spell outlines and there isn't any of that here. I sort of got lost when the author began discussing the Tree of Life and the Kabbalah but I think that was my failing, not his. It was really refreshing to have the knowledge avaliable to make your own decisions about how things work instead of blindly following traditions that you don't understand. It was quite the mental and philosophic workout and it was worth it.
- This is the most destructive book I've ever read. In order to get involved in magic donald tyson insists you have to cut off all contact from other human beings, cut yourself off from society, become complete devout in prayer and exercises, all in preparation for your 'initiation ceremony'...which is when you find out that donald tyson is a sham and all his promises of successful magic fall through. Go ahead knock yourself out.
- Years ago, when I read The New Magus, I was in a time of spiritual searching in my life. From Western to Eastern; Yoga, Tao, Wicca, Hermetic, and much, much more ... I read, studied, and tried to find my place in them all. I wrote many personal papers regarding my journey and beliefs. It wasn't until I read The New Magus that I felt I'd found what I was looking for. It was if The New Magus was mimicking (and enhancing upon) my own writings.
The New Magus was good, but it always left me with questions. Certain concepts and theories didn't sit well with me. Most, if not all, of them were updated in New Millennium Magic. I didn't (and still don't) have the years of in depth knowledge and occult study that Mr. Tyson does, but in areas where I was comfortably knowledgeable, I found myself agreeing with him. Where I wasn't so cknowledgeable, my own researches, theories, and conclusions have led me to agree with Mr. Tyson, time and time again.
I do not believe that this is the end-all book of Western Magic. And yes, there are concepts and theories in which I don't fully agree with Mr. Tyson ... notably the removal of oneself from civilization. But I can say that of the hundreds of books I have read in the last 17 years, this one is my 'core' book.
As for Mr. Tyson's stress on Great Powers/Great Responsibility, I think this is a wonderful lesson for all aspects of life. Many parents, teachers, and books talk about Karma and what goes around comes around. I for one am very glad he continually points this out, as I have witnessed people in life, business, and occult lose themselves to selfishness and ... dare I say ... evil. It doesn't have to be magic, we all have responsibilities with money, trust, leadership, and other forms of power as well.
I have recommended this book for years, and I will continue to recommend this book to anyone interested in Western occult information and practices.

1 comments about Complete Earthly Woman: Every Woman's guide to complete Self Empowerment and Self Mastery.
- Complete Earthly Woman is an astonishingly simple tool that has truly transformed my life. Using the ancient art of conscious breathing, coupled with sacred invocations, the body energetically sheds the cellular memory of pain, suffering and abuse. Since the body is an energetic instrument, it makes logical sense that toxic energy remains anchored in our system, causing physical and emotional illness. To heal means to release from the energetic blockages that imprison us in our old patterns. True liberation comes from shifting this energy and actually purifying our bodies and our minds. In the tradition of alternative healeing such as Reiki and Acupuncture, this is a form of energy balancing that simply uses conscious breathing to shift and change the energy of the body and mind so that it can accept new, empowering beliefs. This is a book that I would recommend to anyone who is ready to heal and claim their true power!

- An uplifting, and emotional fulfilling experience. I have suuffered deeply from the death of my mother. These 3 audio tapes, and 2 thirty two page workbooks helped me to realize that it is o.k. for me to be happy. Spiritually uplifting, this book has helped in my finding a more loving fulfilled life. I highly recommend it to any one searching for a happier life, and for those who need help in learning the theory and practice of how to interact with other people.

2 comments about I'll Do It Tomorrow: How to Stop Putting It Off and Get It Done Today.
- OK, I'm not a procrastinator, so why did I read this book? Because I'm afraid that I'm becoming one! So I thought I would take a dose of preventative medecine and heal myself of the tendency of putting things off (usually the most important things).
There are three smashing things about this book. First, the authors, with all their humor (and there is a lot of it), take their subject very seriously. One of the authors calls himself a "recovering procrastinator" and you can tell he has experienced the downside of this affliction (and I'm sure the other author, his wife, has borne a lot of the consequences!). Most of us joke about procrastination, but this book will help you realize when it's a joke and when it isn't. Second, the advice offered is straightforward and practical: a step-by-step guide for those who really want to overcome the temptation to delay doing the things they know must be done. In addition, the advice is not just down-to-earch, it is wise, especially when it comes to the things in life that really count. Finally, the comic strips, from B.C., are side-splitters. They're done by the cartoonist Johnny Hart, who also does The Wizard of Id. While this may seem paradoxical advice to give to all you procrastinators out there, let me still give it: don't dither -- by this book now!
- This book was easy to read, with excerpts from various motivational speakers and comics interspersed throughout, which is exactly what a procrastinator needs to stay interested. But the author (who has a Christian radio show) assumes the reader is a devout Christian. The entire last chapter urges the reader to become born again (no procrasination advice). If this is your religion, you will probably find this book useful. If not, you may be turned off.
