5 comments about Lessons for Living: Simple Solutions for Life's Problems.
- Lessons for Living is a exceptionally well-written book offering simple, practical and usable suggestions for living a happier and more fulfilling life. The book has helped me personally, offering new perspectives on situations in my life that were troublesome. As a therapist, I often recommend Johnston's book to my clients and have used it as a text in several group therapy settings. Every single client has given positive feedback on how the book has helped them see problems in a new light as well as provide easy to follow exercises to aid them in making changes in their lives. The book's best feature is the many strategies for tackling long-standing habits that negatively impact our lives. I highly recommend Lessons for Living . . . for everyone.
- There are many reasons for having this book but let me relate to you what only two chapters did for me:
Gradually I became stressed. I found it hard to concentrate on anything, even the things I once enjoyed -- Even watching a movie became a task. I was too tense to concentrate, which made it hard to remember anything. I avoided people because even talking became stressful. I became so tense at times that I had difficulty breathing. Then I got this book. The muscle relaxation exercise showed me that all of the above symptoms were due to tense muscles brought on by stress. Afterwards I felt wonderfully calm and at peace with the world. Following the advice on meditation brought about a simultaneous supreme calmness and sharp-thinking alertness (My brainwaves had gone from high beta to alpha). Once, my concentration increased so dramatically after the meditation that I felt mentally invincible. Of course, the effect only lasted that night but I experienced a similar effect on repeating the mediation. It basically quietens your chattering mind, and reduces 'noise on the brain'. The incessant chatter on the brain stops. No longer caught up in your thoughts, you are left more in the moment, and notice the world isn't all that complicated after all. Peace follows. I can't _stress_ enough how vital this book is for conquering tension, stress, and emotional unrest. Get it for yourself and feel much better.
- Found the author's site on line a while back and got this book which helped me very much! Read it 6-7 months ago, and I'm still finding the advice in here extremely useful. Basically, it's advice on positive thinking that really can help your life be happier if you apply the principles suggested.
- I found this book to be a comfort and a reminder of how to treat others as you want to treated. I love it. Especially the whole in the street story on taking appropriate action. It is worth having in your library.
- One of the best books I've read. Very practical spiritual essays that will bring hope and comfort to whomever reads it.

5 comments about What Do I Do Now?: Dr Fosters 30 Laws Of Great Decision Making.
- I've always had a hard time making decisions. In fact I would research the heck out of everything in order to make one measly decision. I've always been happy with what I decided on, but I've alway went with there's always something better. Well it got so bad that I've got to the point of enjoying the research of something vs. going straight to the decision making....what a waste of time. What do I do Now? is a great life advice book but more importantly outlines what one considers when making a decision. What's great about this book is that instead of slowly getting to each criteria through researching, you go straight to it and make a decision quickly. I don't feel guilty for not able to make a decision either. It used to be that I thought I was too wishy washy to make one but in reality did not have enough info. to make a decision. The book helps in that it tells you at what step you are in a decision process. I'm really really glad I read this book!
Danny-Dallas, Texas
- I can't decide whether or not to read this book. There are so many other books to choose from, and I keep putting off the decision. People tell me this is a good book, and although I appreciate the opinions of others, I'm uneasy making the decision. I feel frozen on the spot. I give the book 3 stars, since it's the middle score, and saves me having to make a decision either way.
- The descriptions and reviews on this page refer to the printed book, not the ebook. This ebook consists simply of a brief 7-8 synopsis of 10 of the 30 laws, along with a link to the publishers website, and an ad to buy the full book. To make matters worse, amazon.com is charging $2.00 above retail price.
There is very little more information in the ebook than is in the summaries on this page. Don't waste your money on what is essentially a $5.00 advertisement for the printed book. Buy the printed edition insead.
- I saw the average star rating and didn't look further - I knew this was the book I wanted. If I had bothered to read the first review I would have been warned about what I fell for. This IS NOT the book. It's a few pages that barely cover any information at all, just an overview of his first 10 principles.
- Can a simple decision change our lives permanently for the better? Yes.
When life hands us struggles or challenges or problems (or whatever euphemism you use to talk about when life gets hard), decision-making sometimes seems cloudy. Recently I read a thought-provoking book on decision-making called "What Do I Do Now?" by Dr. Charles Foster. In it, he lays out 30 laws of good decision-making he's developed from his over 14 years of studies with tons of participants.
Maybe this sounds a little dry, but believe me - it's anything but dry. Better decisions about our lives and activities can have resounding results capable of creating great joy, opportunity, prosperity and peace in our lives.
Just as a little taste of what's in there, I'll share some of my notes:
Law #1 - Focus on the most important thing.
(Wow, there's a great rule. Well, duh! I've heard this before. Yada, yada, yada! But wait... then Dr. Foster reveals...)
How do you recognize the most important thing?
* It's something that will make your life wonderful. (Oh, yeah. I forgot that decisions can do that. Good point.)
* Or it's something that will enable you to take care of your most important responsibility. (Yeah, when that's taken care of, I'll breathe easier. Sounds sensible.)
* Or it's something that will make it possible for you to solve your biggest problem. (Oh, yeah. That's right. Decision-making is about solving problems, not drowning in ambivalence.)
* Or it's something that will address one huge, stubborn fact you've been refusing to accept. (Hey, buddy, what are you implying? That my lack of focus on making good decisions and taking action might be a problem for me? Errr, well, I kinda see your point.)
* Or it's something that fits who you really are. (You mean it's OK for me to value myself as highly as I value others? That if I do what the Big Guy put me here to do, that might be a great decision? Maybe I should do more to fulfill my purpose. And maybe that would actually make me happier. What a concept!)
Law #2 - Don't Decide Until You're Ready
(I didn't have a problem with this concept. I take my dear sweet time already. I need to think more about his Law #4 - Choose It or Lose It.)
Law #3 - Look for all the good things that can happen.
(In the middle of struggle, we often fail to see the great things that can come of making good decisions. If we don't yield to the pressures of the moment, we can list out all the great things that can happen from making a good decision. Just so you'll start to think about what GOOD things can happen, the good doctor lays out...)
Four Flavors of Good Things That Can Happen
1. You get more of what you were hoping for.
2. You get something from them that you never imagined you'd get.
3. The outcome you were looking for might be much more likely to happen than you realized.
4. The outcome comes with a smaller price tag than you thought.
(I think you're getting the idea here. Better decisions lead to better outcomes - often unforseeably better.)
I hope the notes above give you some enjoyable food for thought. There are 26 other great thought-provoking, decision-spurring laws in the book. This guy spent the last 14 years studying this stuff and his ideas are elegantly simple and clear. Some may seem obvious but believe me - this guy makes each point alive with possibilities and how-to's.
In closing, let me just remind you of Law #8.
YOU ALWAYS HAVE BETTER OPTIONS.
Don't let yourself be mired in the challenges of life. You can choose the answers you need, the answers that make sense for you. I hope you choose something that will make your life wonderful today.

5 comments about Secrets of Your Own Healing Power.
- I really enjoyed the audio book. I felt Mr. Dryer had a good sense of humor yet realistic goals that we can all find our way to. I feel this book would be good for anyone trying to let go of past anger, disappointment, or pain. I have recommended it to many clients of our health library, and the therapists at our clinic are now referring clients to it as well.
- Dr. Wayne Dyer really practices what he lectures about . . . I
just heard him on a PBS special, in which he described how he often sends those who write him a gift for no special reason . . . so when he graciously sent me his live lecture tape series, SECRETS OF YOUR OWN HEALING POWER, I rushed to listen to it . . . my reaction: WOW! As is the case with any book or tape put out by Dyer, you'll be inspired and informed when experiencing it . . . in addition, you'll be entertained (as was the group of chiropractic professionals fortunate to be able to hear him). He emphasizes that the secrets to healing are not somewhere "out there," but rather, healing is something that takes place inside each and every one of us, occurring when we "connect to our Source" and bring Spirit to the disease." He emphasizes that healers need to be able to banish doubt and see their clients as individuals who already possess the capacity to heal themselves. That is, those with health challenges need to have someone in their energy field who truly believes that healing can take place. These other observations by Dyer also caught my attention: Doctors when they misdiagnose . . . do they then agree to having misbilled? When you place a label on somebody you negate them. You then begin to treat the label, not the person. Four words will end all conflicts in relationships: You're right about that.
- Listening to Dr. Dyer is refreshing and reinforces what I already know but somehow forget in the process of everyday living.
- This is very inspirational, humorous, frank and informative. Dr Dyer never fails to show me another way or another book which takes me further along the path of development. In this CD he has produced some magnificent work. I laughed, I cried and I was extremely moved. I recommend it to anyone wanting to find the truth of what the world is about.
- After having visited my medical physicans for months with chronic back pain and digestive pain we hit a roadblock. The physicians could find no reason for my medical issues. MRI, of everything you can think of produced no real diagnosis with the exception of a degenerative disk. I decided to try something different and I struck gold. No longer do I take any medications and I am so much more active. My day to day life has changed as well. In short, I am going through a transformation. Dr. Wayne Dyer has taught me a better approach to life.

5 comments about Self-Esteem and Peak Performance.
- Going through the tape of Jack Canfield, I found many good tips on how to become more positive and the good thing is his voice reflects the kindness that some other positive thinkers lack. It raises above the average in that respect, even though in the field of the ideas, it is similar to the others. It definitely has its value listening though. I would recommend it.
- This was the first cassette purchase I made, and I was so impressed, I have begun to keep my eyes open for more books on tape. Jack Canfield, well known for his uplifting "Chicken Soup" series, is just as uplifting in voice. The series is very practical, with Jack outlining simple exercises you can do with minimal time, that will improve your outlook. It is true that repetitive listening makes a difference, though I've only gotten through it 4 times completely. He spices his tips up with stories of success, and the fact that it's a taped live seminar, makes it sound like you are really there listening to him in person. The only thing I could do without were the questions at the end, and the section of affirmations did not strike my imagination too strongly, though both of these would be welcomed by other listeners I'm sures.
- I first bought this set of tapes several years ago at an education seminar and it was a valuable investment. Jack Canfield is caring, understanding, knowledgeable and has a great sense of humor. He comes across as a 'real' person who uses teaching examples from his own life and degrees of self-disclosure that help create a 'trust' atmosphere for the listener. He has a speaking manner that puts you at ease and makes you want to listen to everything he has to say. Self-esteem, self-confidence and relating to other people is who we are every day and he helps improve this with techniques for developing and strengthening our 'inner selves'. I've listened to these tapes every 6 months for the last 7 yrs. and I listen to them whenever I am going through a really stressful time. They are uplifting and healing.
- Jack Canfield is my motivational role model and for good reason. Jack is a warm and lovable fellow who believes in people--to do better and be better. I love to listen to these tapes over and over again. They are really motivating. And by the way he's funny too! Zev Saftlas, Author of Motivation That Works
- This is a great collection of tips and stories to help alter the way we think of ourselves. These tapes give my self-esteem a boost and make the world a better place. The formula of Experience + Response = Outcome is just one of the great ways this tape influences posative thinking. The only down side is that this product isn't sold as a CD.

5 comments about The Thin You Within You: Winning the Weight Game with Self-Esteem.
- A great book for helping the lifelong diet addict find the true reason for losing the weight. If you have never succeeded in losing weight, this book can help you find the mental blocks that stand in your way and help you get the true success that is waiting.
- In the classic Twerski style, this book avoids the usual self help "psycho babble" and presents the topic in an easy to digest format.(pardon the pun) It is full of wonderful stories, and colorful verbal illustrations. Twerski does not examine what we eat, but rather the reasons behind what we eat. He does not "preach" nor blame you but lifts your spirit and encourages you to care for yourself as a means to permanant weight loss.(He sites the main reason for any compulsion is a lack of self-esteem.) He explores ways to cope with everyday life and situtations that can lead to overeating. This is refreshing and rare in books of the genre. I have found it personally very helpful. A book to read time and time again.
" Thin You" is filled with insight that can only come from someone who understands the compulsive mind. I reccomend it as a solid book of advise for anyone regardless of their eating disposition. It is gentle but honest wisdom everyone can use. Dr. Twerski is a legend! I am from Pittsburgh. (as is he) where his work is highly respected. He is ever revered as a wise advisor. I reccomend this booK! Read it and be well!! Thank you Dr. Twerski !!
- I found this book to be full of silly metaphors (as if that's the only way we could relate to Dr. Twerski). It just didn't get me the information I needed. Perhaps others would find it motivational.
- I just finished this book and I am not sure why, but it felt like it was missing something. I am reading alot of books about this issue right now and I didn't find anything new in this book that I haven't read in many others. But I will give him credit about the self esteem that he is constantly reminding you is the root of all of this - I just feel he failed to give you any really good advice, except for some affirmations, on how to improve it. I guess you would have to buy his other books.
- Twerski warns against 'miracle- diets' at the outset of the work. And he shows a great deal, it seems to me, of common sense and professional wisdom in not urging one single simple answer to the complex question of compulsive eating, and overweight. Among the tips I may in the future find useful are those which warn against 'eating while doing something else' 'eating when standing up'.Another major point is that it is often through some kind of 'group- support' that one is able to overcome the urge to overeat.
Twerski has great sympathy for those who compulsively overeat, sees it as a kind of disorder and compulsion similar to alcoholism and drug - addiction. He does not offer a cure- all but rather much good and sensible advice.

1 comments about Transforming Body Image: Learning to Love the Body You Have.
- The book "Transforming Body Image" is an excellent resource as I struggle to lose weight. Ms. Hutchinson has helped me realize that I need to feel good about myself before I can change my body on the outside. She has helped me clarify my image of myself and release some beliefs that have limited me. She advises us to make choices about what we want for ourself. The many helpful exercises promote relaxation and enhance my ability to imagine so that I can love the body I have. This is an excellent and possibly necessary adjunct to any weight management program.

1 comments about Mental Strength: Condition Your Mind, Achieve Your Goals.
- While most of us know that mental strength can be developed in the same manner as physical strength, very few of us really know how to go about doing it save by serendipitous discovery. Based on his considerable success as a martial artist and author, Iain Abernethy lays out a step-by-step methodology for overcoming doubt, building self-confidence, and achieving your dreams. Nothing in this book is rocket science yet his codification of a straightforward, understandable, and implementable process is nothing short of brilliant. As I read through his excellent tome I found myself thinking, "Yeah, that is how I did that" several times. Without knowing it, I've followed his process in achieving most of my major successes in my life, stuff like earning a blackbelt in karate, publishing three books and dozens of articles, gaining promotions at work, and building strong relationships at home. Abernethy's clear, encouraging guidance will show you how to develop a strong, powerful mind, grow your talents, become the person you want to be, and live the life you want to live too. This information is extremely well laid out, masterfully written, and most importantly, it works. Very highly recommended.

3 comments about Tai Chi Chuan's Internal Secrets.
- This is not a "Teach Yourself Tai Chi in 24 Hours" type of book, but, rather, it is an excellent examination of the principles upon which Tai Chi is founded. Grandmaster Wong and Sifu Hallander explain clearly many of the "classic" principles of this martial art. The photos are very helpful, especially the ones showing proper and improper techniques. A "must read" for serious Tai Chi students.
- This book is very short and about half or more is just pictures, and not very informative pictures at that. The thing about Tai Chi is that so much of it is in where your feets, hips, elbows and waist is, and it's hard to see subtle things like that when they are wearing such baggy clothing. The history and Chi Kung sections of the book are very short and superficial.
I think the problem the author, and a lot of of authors, makes is that question is not whether Tai Chi Chuan would benefit you or not, the question is, how much? There are trade-offs inherent in everything, spending an hour in standing meditation is an hour you can't spend doing something else. Before someone decides to make a time commitment to Tai Chi, they should know what they're getting. What is Chi and how does it work? What should I be feeling when during exercises, what will I be feeling later? Can Tai Chi really cure "incurable" diseases like diabetes and cancer? Can Tai Chi really be used effectively today as a fighting art? This is the sort of information that people want to know but is absent from the book. This isn't a very good source of information about Tai Chi Chuan for beginners. The one thing it may be good for is if you're studying Tai Chi at a school, it serves as a decent reference to supplement your training.
- Excellent book, detailed illustrations and technique, received in perfect condition, and quick and easy transaction.
