  1. "To know the road ahead, ask those coming back."
    --Chinese Proverb

James Green's interviews with 87 people helped them reveal their moment of truth--and what truth it is. Each story is only a few pages based on: If you could go back and change anything in your life, what would you do differently?

The subtitle of the book is "How to seize your once-in-a-lifetime chance to get it right." It's pretty obvious we will see ourselves in more than one of the stories.

You cannot have a favorite in these stories as each one makes a strong point. For example:
-- A retired NYC cop says he wishes he had been more open minded as a young man relative to people of different races.
-- A young woman tells how she loved men who didn't love her; and was loved by men she didn't love, and how she finally decided to save herself physically and emotionally for the right man.

The author is an airline pilot who decided that "He would listen to the whisper and not let life pass him by, and that he would live his life without regret."

The interview questions he used are part of the book, and if you read them, you will be forced to think about things you learned as each one is a subtle nudge down memory lane.

Can you tell I loved this book! And as a bonus, he included some really great quotes.

Armchair Interviews says with so much downer news in the media and our lives today, these stories so very uplifting.

"Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first,
    the lesson afterwards."
-- Vernon Sanders Law, pro baseball player

  2. IF THERE'S ONE THING I'VE LEARNED by James Green is about "how to seize your once in a lifetime chance to get it right." The author has interviewed hundreds of people of all ages and walks of life and asked what is the most important lesson each has learned and how he or she learned it. The stories and the lessons are told in the interviewee's words. Many are followed with a related wise saying from Wisdom teachers of various faiths through the ages

  3. I received this book as a gift and was very moved by its content. The author's personal experiences, as well as those of others he shares, serve to remind the reader of the importance of living life without regret ... something I promote in my romance seminars and coaching. This book is definitely worth the read, not to mention you may want to gift someone you love with a copy. Oh, and don't be surprised if you discover that one of the stories you read is very close to your own. Congratulations, Mr. Green!

  4. Reviewed by William Phenn for Readers Views

James Green, airline pilot turned writer, turned motivationalist. All he has seen and all he has done, does not compare to what he has written in this compelling volume.

Green has interviewed eighty seven people (I shall have to find out why 87 and not 90?) from all walks of life. Taken one aspect of a person's life, he gives the reader an insight into that person which no one has ever heard before. This book has true accounts of lost love, internet love, disappointing careers, unfulfilled dreams, shattered lives and few successes. Successes such as Green, who includes an excerpt from his own life, tells of how he made the right choice in his early years and how that choice, that one single moment in his existence, made an amazing difference in his life.

Green has filled "If There's One Thing I've Learned" with over two hundred and fifty pages of the most interesting accounts of people. Recollections they have had of the good, the bad, and the ugly. One such example is Steve, the thirty seven year old architect, that discovered internet dating. His humorous account of cyber sex and internet dating left me in stitches. Then there is Ron, the thirty nine year old technician, whose story was in the chapter titled "The One Who Got Away" - a heart breaker that will read like a Greek tragedy. On and on, the examples are endless, the stories compelling.

Green has combined every facet of enjoyable reading into this volume. There is joy, drama, tragedy, sex (not erotic) and no violence. If there's one thing I've learned, this is a very enjoyable book that is general audience. Lessons learned in the book are many; see which one relates to you and your life.

I highly recommend this fine piece of literary work to all who can read. You are in here somewhere, mark my words.

  5. James Green's book encourages the reader to look within himself/herself, to focus upon their goals, what's important in their lives and also offers some solace that we can learn from our past, in order to improve upon our future. It's refreshing to read a "guide" which isn't another fad. Rather, the author offers thought provoking experiences from diverse individuals, which can be of benefit to all.

  1. This book not only changed the way I looked at food but it changed my way of eating and opened my eyes to notice how my body reacted to food. This is an awsome book and I hope to find more books with a biblical fountain to make better choices of what I put and do not put in my body and live my life.

  2. Joyce Meyers has done a great job on this book. It is very motivating and spiritual for living right and happy. I enjoy going back to reading it for motivation when you start feeling depressed, etc.

  3. This book helped me look at myself and get on the ball to do something different. I can no longer expect different results by doing the same thing. If I want different results I must do something different. What a great book to get me inspired to do just that.

  4. I buy a lot of Joyce Meyer's books. She relates to us humans and their relationship to God in a real-life way. She is great. I read this book in one day. Ate it right up!

  5. I have given this book to so many people...
This book gives it to you straight re: excersize, nutrition, and lifestyle habits that promote lasting health. It's expecially poignant for woman .. but applies to all. Great for those who lack motivation and who think the mountain to physical well being is just too great OR for those who think they just don't have time for themselves. Joyce did her homework. It's an easy read and technically sound.
    HIGHLY recommend it!

  1. BRAVO TO JERRY POSNER, FOR THIS UPLIFTING, INSPIRING, EASY-TO-READ,
CLEVER AND ALTOGETHER WONDERFUL BOOK ON HOW TO GET IT RIGHT-WHATEVER THE AGE. PROFOUND IN ITS' SIMPLICITY, IT EXCEEDED ALL EXPECTATIONS FROM THIS

  2. Love this book! More fun to read than other self-improvment books, accessable and enjoyable. I believe this book will really be a help in achieving my goals. I'd recommend it, not only to late bloomers, but to anyone with a sense of humor and desire to grow.

  3. In the spirit of full disclosure, I must say that Jerry hired me to edit this book. So I have read it carefully, and repeatedly. And, I am not particularly a fan of so called "self-improvement" or "new age" type products. Be that as it may ... I love this book! As advertised, it is not your normal self-help book. It is bouncy and funny and joyful, and as if that weren't reason enough to buy it, there is truth contained herein. It will take root in your head and you'll find yourself seeing your world in a new way. Relax and enjoy.

  4. This book is really a how-to manual on how to live the life you want to live. No mumbo-jumbo, just real, hands-on, instructions including fun(!!) "homework". If you read this book, and do the (painless, fun, entertaining) work, your life will improve. Period. Guaranteed.

  5. Mr. Posner has written a great book! It was an enjoyable read and uplifting! I like that the book was not bland...Mr. Posner has a sense of humor. As the back cover says, "This is NOT your normal self-help book!"

5 comments about Making Peace With Your Thighs: Get Off the Scales and Get On with Your Life.
  1. Every woman, preadolescent to midlife, has to deal with body image issues. In this culture, this is no easy task but Dr. Linda has a real handle on the issues we face and provides tremendous help with humor and practical solutions. Not only is there help but a great deal of information as to what is happening to our bodies, souls and spirits as a result of the cultural influence we face today. I thought this book would be great for me but now have decided to share it with my two teenage daughters as well. It's a must read for any age.

  2. Wow! A powerful read! I came across this book as I was browsing through Barnes and Noble with my coffee. I opened it up and was hooked just from the table of contents! Before I knew it I had been sitting in the aisle for an hour and fifteen minutes, totally engrossed in this captivating, hysterical and insightful book! Dr. Linda has a way with words and humor to get across tough issues. In the supermodel culture we live in it is nearly impossible to survive without being grounded in a secure and HEALTHY body image. Whether you are a size 2 or 22 you need to read this book! Thank you, it was such a blessing!

  3. I am a professional image consultant and have been listening to women lament about their imperfect bodies for decades! Dr. Linda's words were full of compassion and truth wrapped in humor. She obviously has been through the struggles many women face at some point in their lives. Her style of writing informs as well as entertains. She enables us to laugh at unrealistic views of ourselves while offering a godly perspective that sees hope in our mirror of life. She helps us come up with a more realistic focus of who God created us to look like from the inside out.

I think every teenage girl should read this book to get started off in the right frame of mind about what true beauty is all about and how to enjoy the skin she's in at every age! Every adult woman should read it to inspire her to be all God created her to be without fear of flaws or the future. Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me and my thighs! Thanks Dr. Linda!

  4. I loved the cover artwork for this book and the impression it gives (a fun read about a potentially serious subject) was accurate. Dr Linda Mintle explores many of the common issues of self-image that women have - dissatisfaction with face, stomach, breasts, thighs, hair etc., and how flawed our model of what we should be achieving can be. She looks at the dieting obsession that is so prevalent, along with eating disorders and the root causes of some of these problems. She talks about ageing and how this can affect a woman's physical body and self-awareness, along with unhelpful portrayals of ideal bodies on TV, in magazines and newspapers and in shops.

Linda Mintle's writing style is very readable with many personal illustrations, some humour and, at the end of each chapter, relating the issue to the reader's relationship with God. Her illustrations are rather American-centric, as is her use of situations and regular comments on very pervasive elective plastic surgery (less common in the UK) but her overall points are valid wherever we live and in whatever Western culture.

This book covers a broad range of topics and 230 pages don't allow her to delve really deeply into any of them but this is certainly a worthwhile introduction to an important subject for many women and gives some theological insights into our own views of our image and our physical attributes.

  5. If you want a book on how to accept God into your life and that you can NEVER lose weight or be happy without God then this is the book for you. I really wish that the description said something about this little detail. If I wanted a guilt lecture I would go to church. I threw the book away as soon as I figured out it had no redeeming merits. SKIP THIS BOOK, SAVE YOUR MONEY!

5 comments about Mustang Sallies: Success Secrets of Women Who Refuse to Run With the Herd.
  1. I was given this book as a gift from a friend who said, "Now you'll understand what's going on with your life, Diane. You're a mustang. That's not a negative." When I read Fawn Germer's Mustang Sallies, I knew what she meant. I've always felt misunderstood and underappreciated. Now I realize I am what Germer calls a "trailblazer." I've never been one to go along to get along, and I don't kiss up to move up. That's hurt me in the past, but Mustang Sallies is filled with strategies to make me succeed without selling out. I love this book. (...) It's phenomenal.

  2. If these stories of women who made a difference despite all odds don't inspire you to achieve to your fullest potential, it's doubtfull that anything else can. The spectrum of women chosen is a testament to diversity. This would make a great holiday gift for anyone and everyone.

  3. This book will have a permanent place on my nightstand so I will find a little calm before going to sleep. Finally. FINALLY! Someone has explained all of my self-doubts and shown a way around them. This is a powerful book that I am giving as gifts to every one of my friends. It's required reading for any woman who has ever felt judged or criticized by others when she was absolutely in the right.

  4. I just discovered Fawn Germer's books thanks to a friend who saw her speak in D.C. last year. What great advice for someone who is struggling career-wise. I am in a situation where I am unwilling to compromise my beliefs in order to fit in to a work environment where I am not respected or valued. To read this book and hear what ultra-successful women have gone through in order to just be themselves has given me hope and renewed energy. I am presenting "Mustang Sallies" to my reading group next month and I feel confident thirteen other women are going to find strength in Fawn's writings.

I highly recommend this book to any and all career women who have felt undervalued and conflicted about their careers.

  5. Do you feel isolated and judged at work, simply for being who you are? Then you may well be a Mustang Sally, insists journalist Fawn Germer ("Hard Won Wisdom"). Mustang Sallys (from the song) don't go along to get along, says Germer, which means great rewards, but also great trouble - especially in business, where women have little leeway as outspoken leaders.

Peppered with interviews from some 75 different women like Hillary Rodham Clinton, Erin Brockovich and Eve Ensler ("The Vagina Monologues"), Germer offers advice on being true to yourself, fighting for what matters, getting what you want and daring to make mistakes. While Germer suggests little in the way of self-examination, she will definitely reassure courageous yet criticized women who refuse to kiss up in order to move up.

2 comments about The Hidden Power of the Heart: Discovering an Unlimited Source of Intelligence.
  1. Sara Paddison gives a moving account of her personal transformation through using HeartMath techniques. She includes summaries of recent scientific research on the heart--how it actually functions, its two-way communication with the brain, and its relationships with other organs. This gives a scientific framework for understanding the emotional, mental and even physical improvements she experienced. I already knew HeartMath techniques worked by the time I read The Hidden Power of the Heart, but Sara gave me insight into why and how they worked and an a fuller sense of their potential. Sara includes descriptions of how to do some HeartMath exercises and refers to other books and the HeartMath website for more. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking simple, practical and powerful tools for stress relief, emotional and habit pattern management, awakening intuitive intelligence and more.

  2. Sara Paddison gives a winning and very personal testimony to the value of the Heartmath world-view and techniques. If you look through the Table of Contents, you may easily classify the book under "spirituality" with chapters on compassion, surrender, God's creation, deep heart listening, forgiveness, death... The heart of the book can be summarised, I think, by this paragraph. "As you practice loving each person you meet, you will perceive at deeper levels that earth is all one family, a global family living in one back yard. The first step of the mathematical equation for fulfillment, one that anyone can do and understand, is to just love the people. The more people in this stressful world that can build this foundation and take Step 1, the better chance humanity has." (2nd last page) Yet this is not mere pious verbiage. Readers are introduced to the scientific basis, world-view and technology of Heartmath. (Please confer my review of Cut-thru for some background.) I'd recommend this book in particular to people who are under stress, confused or not finding meaning in life. Sara's own experiences may inspire them. My reservations with the book are related to language that is too vague and sweeping. For example, "Einstein's discovery that everything is energy helped launch a whole new science, Quantum Physics, which states that nothing is really separate from anything else, everything is interconnected and interrelated." (p. 77) In reading the crucial chapter on "The Dimensional Shift", I miss more stringent criteria for each of the 5 dimensions. And I still don't know what the author's first two dimensions are. Even though I'm a Catholic priest, I actually feel uncomfortable in Chapter 14's mixing science with faith, using the Big Bang to prove God's creation. There are more recent evidences of an expanding universe. But in terms of science, we cannot rule out an eternal pulsating universe before the Big Bang. Science deals with the realm of knowledge that can be postulated and proved, while faith is in the realm of beliefs, values and meaning. The Genesis story of creation has no implication for how the world developed scientifically. It only aims at shedding light on the meaning of life, of each person in face of evil and suffering. How do you explain light before the creation of the sun on the 4th day? [Aside from a short Introduction by Deborah Rozman, Ph.D. and the author's expanded Preface, the only revisions that I can spot are 4 to 5 pages in Chapter 15 on "Holographic Awareness".]

5 comments about Bootstraps: A Woman's Guide to Personal Power in a Victim-Driven World.
  1. I have read Sue Kipperman's book two times now and feel that there is so much to learn that this could become my personal power bible. Sue shows us how to dig deeply to find our own power and then, use that power to live a life of happiness and fulfillment. Her Ten Sacred Insights are so phenomenal that I want to make them all my personal Sacred Attributes.

I have recommended this book to all of my friends and several of them have already purchased the book for themselves and their family and friends.

  2. Sue Kipperman, Life Coach and ordained minister, has written a readable, practical guide that belongs on everyone's bookshelf. We all can tap into our sacred insights in order to achieve personal power and freedom. "Victimhood" is only an excuse for not pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps.

I recommend this informative, step-by-step approach for thriving in a victim-driven world.

  3. As a man I must say I was surprised at how taken in I was by Sue's book. The book reads easy and has a good flow to it. It will make you look inside yourself for the answer to what makes you happy. It's a how do I get to that place guide for the journey of life. I will pass this one on to friends and family.

  4. After reading this book I was able to better understand how strong, and at the same time how fragile, the human spirit that lives inside all of us. This book not only provides a solid sense of what needs to happen but how someone can achieve their "own" goals and not the ones force upon us. I am looking forward to the next book the Sue Kipperman plans on writing.

  5. It's easy in this fast paced world to continue the life path created for us by negative outside forces. It's even harder to take the time to break out of the rut. Change is tough but the stories in Sue's book serve as reminders that life is too precious to allow monotony. We need to be reminded that we owe it to ourselves and to those around us to be our best and allow the power of change to motivate us to more fulfilling lives. It is possible! Thanks to all who were courageous to share their stores in the hopes of allowing others to take a deeper look at what life can offer. Peace to all.

5 comments about Hypnosis for Self-confidence and Self-esteem (Hypnotic Empowerment Series for Self-Awakening) (Hypnotic Empowerment Series for Self-Awakening) (Hypnotic Empowerment Series for Self-Awakening).
  1. I have numerous hypnosis CDs and this one is by far the most professionally done. You have to relax your body to accept suggestions, and I found this CD did that very well. The content was very good... the induction, the suggestions, etc.
She has a very soothing voice that is well modulated and well timed. I actually found it more relaxing without music on the CD than with.

  2. I was so very disappointed. I was really looking forward to receiving this CD. I was hoping that it would help me with some jealousy and insecurity issues that I have. This CD only had about three or four different phrases that it kept repeating over and over. very long relaxation. so long that I wasn't relaxed, I was anxious. Do not recommend at all.

  3. People love confidence. Hmmmm... All of the cd's in this series are excellent. I own five of them. See my in depth reviews of Sleep Deeply, and Stress Reduction.

  4. I can't help being amazed at the affect listening to this CD has had on me. I also cannot help being amazed at some of the stuff people will
write on these reviews. How can one person tell everyone else that
self-help CDs and books don't work and that everyone needs to stop wasting
money and see a shrink. Not everyone needs a shrink, and not everyone can
afford to see a shrink. Get real! I've used self-help a lot through the
years and had excellent results, like with this CD, and it is not a placebo effect either! Honestly, for the price of this CD, there really isn't much to lose by trying it. The authors voice is wonderful, well modulated, and very relaxing. I found the suggestions to be quite good and to the point. The suggestions cover anything negative you may have heard or experienced from the moment of conception to the present and beyond. I liked this because it is now believed that babies in the woumb are affected by things they hear, positive and negative. Just be sure to email the author for the detailed instructions. The email address is on the CD and the response is fast. I'm sure most people don't use the self-help CDs correctly which really limits their ability to help. Especially hypnosis CDs. Your mind needs to hear the suggestions over and over in order for the impact to be powerful and long lasting. I've gotten a lot of help from using hypnosis over the last 8 years or so, so I probably know a little bit more about it than most people. I know how to make it work for me. The instructions, if you email for them, will give you good information on hypnosis and how to properly use the CD to get the most from it. So do it, get the CD, get the instructions, listen to the CD as instructed and see what happens. Nothing works for everyone and I am sure most people know this but don't condemn the self-help industry just because you need more help than a CD or book can give you. If the CD doesn't work for you pass it along to someone else, it may work very well for them. If you are like me and you have a few rough edges to smooth out try the CD. If you have heard negative things throughout your life regarding how you look or how smart you are, or should I say, how stupid you are, try the CD. Most of what I heard came from kids I went to school with growing up, and of course from my brothers and sisters which was all about sibling rivalry. Perhaps even some from my parents in the form of, "Why can't you be more like so and so? He is good in school, plays in the band..." You get my drift here. Anyway, the person who wrote the review about getting real psychological help, well, I'm sure he needs it because he is ranting like a lunatic and I hope he is getting the help he needs but it isn't logical to think all people using self-help techniques need professional help. One last thing, the memory CD in this series is excellent as well.

  5. The hypnosis CD's by Glenn Harrold work much better for me now that I've experienced someone else. I was hoping that the lack of music was going to make this CD a welcome addition to my hypnotherapy collection, but all this CD did was relax me.

I was hoping it would build my self esteem (make me feel better about myself) and confidence but it didn't give me any afirmations. This was a waste of money for me.
