5 comments about When GOD Winks: How the Power of Coincidence Guides Your Life.
  1. This book is an easy read, but it makes you think about different events in your life. It also helps give you a new perspective on your life. I highly recommend it!

  2. Wonderful book! I've given copies to 20 plus friends.
Amazing how it helps you see life differently.
God Winks has changed the way I view everyday happenings.
    Highly recommendthis book!

  3. I really enjoyed reading this book. It is a quick read and has a lot of short stories to illustrate how God is making Himself known in our lives. I came away with the hope that the coincedences in my own life really are signs that God is touching my life.

  4. This book was extremely disappointing. I was very excited about it. I've had times in my life when I KNOW the Lord has worked and I was hoping this book would help me be more in tune to the Lord's work in my life and help me see specific situations I may have missed. What a joke!!!

The book seems to be more of a manual for how to use coincidences to do what you want and feel good about it. Many of the examples of "God Winks" lead people to do things that our Lord would not approve of (one example being divorce).

But my biggest complaint is that the vast majority of the author's examples of "God Winks" comes from the rich and famous. I got the impression that the author apparently can not even relate to or understand the work of God in the average person's life. This mistake on the author's part could lead to a reader becoming hopeless rather than hopeful that the True God is working in their life.

I did not come away from the reading believing that the author knew and understood the True God of the Bible, though I did gain some benefit from reading the book. Reading it did remind me that God does work in my life in a personal way and that I need to always be looking for that work - and more importantly that I need to acknowledge, cherish and remember that work.

I would like to share two instances that I know God worked in my life. One could be considered a "coincidence" but the other is just God's work. And both are simple, average examples of the Lord working in an ordinary person's life. They do not describe any life-changing events, but they are God's work non-the-less.

    1) My car - a Subaru Justy - was doing it's job getting my family of 5 around (two in car seats!). We joked about it being the clown car because we could all squeeze in and it looked funny; all of us piling out. The driver's side seat belt broke. We called to find out how much it would cost to fix and discovered that we really, really could not afford it, but what else could we do? Days later we received a letter in the mail informing us that the seat belts had been recalled and we could have it repaired at a dealership for free. What a BLESSING! This seems like a coincidence (or a "God Wink") but I took it for what it was....the Lord watching over us and taking care of our needs.

    2) Shortly before my grandfather died we made a trip to visit him. He was my favorite person in the world. The whole time we were there (as other times before) I would get on to my boys for being loud and rambuctious. My grandfather would sit in his chair in the living room and seemed to be sleeping. He was very frail. I was afraid that my boys would bother him. At one point the boys came bouncing loudly into the room. As I was about to get on to them and scold them for being loud I looked over at my grandfather. He was sitting in his chair laughing! He was wasting away at the end of his life, yet he was enjoying his grandsons' romping around his house. That was pure gold to me. You can't call this a coincidence. You could call it a "God Wink", but after reading Rushnell's book I have an aversion to that term. God did move and speak into my life, but it was absolutely nothing like what Rushnell describes in his book.

I could give many more boring examples of how God has worked in my ordinary life. They probably wouldn't be as appealing as Rushnell's examples because they weren't coincidences on my path to being rich and famous. But they are real examples of a real God working in an ordinary person's life. And they didn't lead me to do something that God would not approve of, quite the opposite. All of the personal experiences I've had with God working in my life have led me away from sin and toward God.

All that to say that if you believe in the God of the Bible don't waste your time reading this book. Instead spend the time really thinking on and praying about how the Lord has worked in your life. Thank Him for it and rejoice!

5 comments about Now, Discover Your Strengths.
  1. The book is very interesting and very effective. The internet test is very accurate. Nevertheless each strength profile should be discussed more in depth. Let's say you get an idea of who you are but you would like to get more of it. Anyway, the price is worth the stuff you find in the book!

  2. Nice concept that could have been handled with a 10 page paper. Clearly authors had to have some volume to prove value so they drone on and on and on. Very tedious reading. Then at every turn they continue to try to sell other products or services. The major killer is having an online exam to evalute your strengths; however, the code is only good once - so DON'T buy a used book as your code will be invalid. If the exam is a work related exercise, you'll be forced to buy a new book just for the code. Also, DON'T let your spouse read the book. If you do, they'll want to take the exam and suprise suprise, you would need another new book just to take the test.

  3. [As a corporate human resources director, I often work on developing the latent talents and skills of various managers. Years ago, I taught a class where I had each participant to look into a hand-held mirror and ask the question, "Would you want to work for this person?"

This book takes this exercise to a completely different level. To discover your own inner strengths (and weakness) ensures that you will become the very best manager possible. As a fan of First, Break All the Rules, I was very satisfied that this follow-up was as timely and useful as the first book. I highly recommend you purchase a copy of this book for yourself and for all of your managers. Michael L. Gooch, SPHR Author of
    [ASIN:1897326882 Wingtips with Spurs]]

  4. I think the subject of the book is good, however a big part of dicovering your strengths is taking the on line strength finder quiz. Unfortunatley for me the code provided on the inside of the jacket is either invalid or has been used by someone already.
So as I read this book I will be left to wonder "what are my strengths..."

  5. Probably the best management and personnel development tool around! Four staff members were each given a copy to read and to follow the instructions for getting an analysis. Each was asked to bring the analysis for their annual job review. They expected the typical "this is good and that is bad" comments but found that when they reviewed their positive traits they were asked "how can you apply that in your job?" Ar real morale and performance builder.

5 comments about Self Matters: Creating Your Life from the Inside Out.
  1. Overall, I don't think this was really what I was looking for personally but this was still an easy set of tapes to listen to. Dr. McGraw is an excellent speaker and kind of funny at times. It's worth the money if you are looking for positive thoughts on changing your life or changing habits in your life. Give it a try!

  2. Good if you are willing to do the work. I like the inspirational talk at the beginning, but wasn't interested in the rest. Tried reading the book first and had a hard time getting to the end...now I know why.

  3. This book changed the way I look at myself and the way I look at the rest of the world. One of the best books I've ever read and I recommend it to anyone who wants to change their perception and get the most out of their life.

  4. Self Matters is Dr. Phil's self-help guide to achieving awareness of ones true self, which he believes will lead to a more rewarding and fulfilling life. Dr. Phil postulates that we are ultimately responsible for the way we are, what we think, feel, and how we behave. Even if we are living with a fictional self-concept of ourselves, it is because we have chosen to do so. The problem is that we tend to make these choices based on the expectations or influences of others, or based on external events for which we have no control.

Self Matters tends to be simplistic in its approach and also in the real-life examples Dr. Phil uses to illustrate his points. Of course, it has to be if the average person is going to use this book as a guide to practicing therapy on themselves. However, Dr. Phil does provide some key insights into the nature of relationships and personal behavior, and uses a number of interesting labels to describe the determinants of our thinking and behavioral processes.

This book will be of benefit to people who meet the following criteria (per Dr. Phil): You believe in God, and that God has a plan for you. You believe that you have a purpose in life, and if you dont realize that purpose, your life will be unfulfilling. You have had one or more profoundly negative experiences in your childhood that has altered your thinking and behavior in a negative way. As a result, you have developed a fictional concept of your true "authentic self", and this "fictional self" causes you to make bad choices/decisions in life. You tend not to be aware that you are living a life that is based on this fictional self.

Dr. Phil then outlines a lengthy process of self-awareness exercises, that involve you recounting your significant life experiences, choices, feelings, beliefs, self-concepts, and their related consequences. Through the process of reviewing, uncovering, and understanding your life's key moments, you become aware of their signifance and value, which will be either positive or negative. With this new awareness, you can create an action plan for changing your thinking and behavior, in a way that will eliminate your fictional self-concepts, and restore you back on track with your authentic self. Or so the theory goes. The older you are the harder it will be to effect this change.

Whether you are successful with Dr. Phil's guide seems to depend on whether you really want to change, your honesty and sincerity with your self, your level of commitment, and your faith in God. Some may be wondering how God fits into the science of psychotherapy, or whether psychotherapy alone, or religion alone, could achieve the same result. Finally, I found it interesting that Dr. Phil would quote Carlos Castaneda in this book. Is Dr. Phil practicing psychology or shamanism, or a little of both?

  5. This is a great book to kick start your personal relationship with self. Dr Phil uses his personality, experience, and education to help others learn the valuable lessons of life. I could totally relate to his book.

Great addition to finding a healthier life, while keeping it simple.

5 comments about Style Statement: Live by Your Own Design.
  1. This is an interesting book and has some good tools for helping determine your style and design interests.

  2. Lovely to look at and interesting section related to discovering one's own style statement. However, not overly interested in the lengthy style statements of the authors' chosen subjects.

  3. Although I'm not yet done reading and working through the exercises, I am thoroughly enjoying the inquiry process and learning things about me I wasn't aware of. The colorful format and beautiful layout is exciting and inspiring. The book begs to be a book club book for women, or done with a group of friends. I'm having a blast and I look forward to sharing it with friends.

  4. Wow, this seller was great. The seller even sent me a card (nice hand-writing) to let me know the book was sent, and include a copy of the receipt from the post office. Very nice. Book was in great condition, I would call it "brand new" condition. Shipping was prompt. I had no problems. The book itself is proving to be quite interesting and helpful. When trying to define any aspect of one's life, such clear guides and questionnaires can be very helpful.

  5. I loved this book. I not only learned alot about who I am, but for the first time in my life I felt like I walked away with a solid feeling that who I am really does have a solid identity, and I now have two keywords to describe myself. CULTIVATED NATURAL. Has it changed my life completely? No. Did I enjoy going through the process? TREMENDOUSLY! I haven't ever taken so much time just for myself to consider my life, my habits, my preferences, etc. I will definitely recommend this book to all of my friends!

5 comments about Earth, Air, Fire & Water: More Techniques of Natural Magic (Llewellyn's Practical Magick Series).
  1. while I consider myself a christian and not pagan, some would argue that I practice some so-called pagan arts. For centuries my ancestors have practiced a sort of combination, if you will, of Catholic and native traditions. anyway, long story short ~ I like this book and while it doesn't really have any traditions my family would have practiced and mostly focuses on Old World (European) rites/traditions, I still find it interesting. it's not nearly as good as "Earth power" but a good read anyway. take it from me, Scott Cunningham is the perfect author for non-wiccans/pagans looking for good books on invoking the earth: nothing that offends unlike many others on the genre.

  2. I adore Scott Cunningham's work, and EAF&W is no exception. Although I love EARTH POWER as well, I like that EAF&W has more techniques and really helps the reader to understand how natural things are affected, and in turn, affect the elements. I love Cunningham's ability to show the reader that magic doesn't really need 50 candles and some expensive oil to be magic - all we have to do is remember our Earth and work with her - directly...that's what real magic is about.

  3. This book was easy to understand and read. Gave good information of what Natural Magic is and was very imformative.

  4. Scott Cunningham is quite the writer! I loved this book, and have since allowed 3 friends to borrow it. And they love it too. I am just beginning wicca, and wanting to learn all I can right now. This book really put things in perspective for me. Taught me alot about the religion that I was not aware of. And also broadend what I did know. Most books that I have read on this subject, seem to go in circles with the author pushing his idea upon the reader. Scott Cunningham leaves it up to the reader to decide about the techniques he uses. A very pleasant approach for all beginners. I will be purchasing more books by Scott Cunningham.

  5. This is coming from someone who studied witchcraft for years. I suppose this book is easier to follow because it's dumbed down. There are basic ideas for making your own spells at the back of the book. They seem fun and nifty, and would be cool, except for the major fact that spells don't do anything. Once a person realizes this, spells lose all of their appeal.

There is lots of information on which herbs, stones and colors are "helpful" for whatever thing you want. Of course there is no scientific proof that any of these things will help you (with the exception of a few herbs that have medicinal value) other than being aesthetically pleasing, but collecting all these nifty things is the materialistic part of wicca. Wiccans then contradict themselves by saying that you really don't need any of these things; just your mind. Then why do people waste money and resources acquiring all this junk?

He talks about the four elements of earth, air, fire, and water. This is what the Greeks thought of as the elements that made up everything in the world. In the many centuries since, real elements have been discovered, but people still talk about the "four" elements--another example of using symbolism for its own sake. He also talks about "positively charging" things by holding them and focusing on them. I'm sure he doesn't even realize that to actually positively charge something, you need to add particles to them on a molecular level.

I'm sure that you will enjoy this book if you are gullible enough to believe in wicca. It is nothing but wishful thinking. None of it is real, and contrary to trendy opinion, wicca is just as fake as every other religion.

4 comments about Healing Your Emotional Self: A Powerful Program to Help You Raise Your Self-Esteem, Quiet Your Inner Critic, and Overcome Your Shame.
  1. This is geared toward abuse survivors of varying kinds. But I think it is a must read for all women...for women who have lost themselves in motherhood, in their job, in their spouses. Her writing style is easy to follow and not condescending. The exercises in the book are thought -provoking and insightful.

  2. Beverly Engel is quickly becoming one of my favorite self-help book writers. This is her newest book, and a must read for anyone who was abused or who had a difficult childhood. Beverly Engel describes the various negative parental mirrors and how they effect children, and how these negative thoughts and beliefs about the self are carried into adulthood. She also provides are powerful step by step program (including journal writing) to help you move through your feelings, coming out the other side with a renewed sense of hope and with new tools to use for the furture. This may also be good for anyone who is harsh and critical of his/herself and would like some tools to be kinder to him/herself. Very validating and empowering book.

  3. Fantastic and very, very helpful! She has a way of helping the abused and the abuser understand from where it started and how to get out of it. It is paractical, easy to read and understand. It is very thoughtful and I highly recommend it to anyone trying to escape abuse and prevent reabuse.

  4. A simply amazing book. I have learned so much about myself and I am only half way thorugh. The book has already helped me to pinpoint the negative images I have and where they came from. This is my second Beverly Engel book and this one hit the nail on the head for me, whereas the other book was good, but not as appropriate for my needs.

I am not only learning to heal myself, but learning how to interact positively with my own children so they will not have the same problems I have. This book definately helps break the cycle.

I read the reviews before I purchased and they helped.

5 comments about Making a Change for Good: A Guide to Compassionate Self-Discipline.
  1. If your life needs a change, you dont have the budget for psychotherapy, and you don't have time to sit down and read a long complicated book, this may be a big help to you. I was able to pick up some ideas and use them immediately. A shift in my perception became simple, and quick to produce results. Some of our lives are too hectic to become a guru. We just need positive changes that will last. You could do this on your lunch break.

  2. Awesome, awesome book - such an easy read, but packed full of tremendous life altering tips. Cheri Huber is an amazing author.

  3. Good little book to help jump start change.Making a Change for Good: A Guide to Compassionate Self-Discipline

  4. whose life is a testament to the fundamental value of compassionate self-discipline AND self-acceptance. That's How the Light Gets In: Memoir of a Psychiatrist by Susan Rako, M.D. takes its title from a song by Leonard Cohen: "There is a crack, a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in." Rako's book is fascinating, remarkably candid, and wonderfully well-written. It is a great read. The writing just flows.

  5. I'm an introspective person; I think a lot about the meaning of life, human interactions, etc. and have done extensive reading to help me understand myself and others. I was disappointed with this book. I thought it covered pretty basic stuff. It might be a fine book for a younger person, or someone who has never been very introspective, but it was nearly worthless for me.

Specifically, she covers conditioning, defenses, our inner voices (the critic, the nurturer, etc.), roles (the helper, the bad one, the smart one, etc.), self-hate, and she outlines "exercises" such as awareness exercises, meditation and journaling ("daily reviews") to help sort things out. This is stuff I did in high school and I'm in my fifties now.

I also found the font distracting; it's printed in a font that mimics hand printing, which gives it a cutesy touch and I HATE CUTESY. That's just a personal preference, some may like it.

Bottom line: save your money unless you really have never had a deep thought before and think you'd like to start now. I'm giving it two stars (as opposed to something less) because it really would be a good beginner book for personal growth for the right person.

  1. Simply said, this book is amazing. It is straight from the mouth of God. I have purchsed this book for many friends in need of spiritual inspiration. I am about to buy another copy for myself since I have almost worn out the original. If the current day's reading does not resonate, ask God to show you something else, flip the pages and you will read what your soul needs. This is my favorite book of all time!!!!

  2. "Until Today" helped me get through the day at one of the toughest times of my life. I would read the daily devotions everyday, and it would motivate and heal the pain away. It drew me closer to the Lord and helped my prayer life as well. I am so greatful to you Iyanla Vanzant, for all that you do for people. You are a life changer. The world is better off with you in it.

This woman's devotional written in a day by day format is an easy to digest, quick reference guide for anyone wanting to start their day out on the right foot with the right attitude and a go-get 'em philosophy. 5 comments about Bradshaw On: The Family: A New Way of Creating Solid Self-Esteem.
  1. John Bradshaw is an outstanding psychologist who has probed deeply into family dynamics, especially dysfunctional families. If you have ever wondered why you have trouble relating to your family "as you should" you may gain insights about your birth family and how you were treated by them. The family of origin's strengths and, more prticularly, their weaknesses will follow from generation to generation unless you gain insight into why you act/react to family members and make the necessary adjustments in your parenting style. John Bradshaw's "Bradshaw On: The Family" will help you see where you may have been damaged as a child. It is must reading for those who know there is "something wrong" but can't put their finger on it.

  2. If you've done a lot of work on yourself this is well written. The word frames annoy me but the book gets to the heart of family. Not for the clueless.

  3. I was introduced to the Bradshaw Video's which aired on PBS in the 80's while I was in rehab. Not only did it answer a lot of questions for me about my childhood but it was enlightening and an eye opener for me. I bought all of his books and I highly recommend those from dysfunctional backgrounds to read his materials.

  4. This book saved my life! It is a must-read for anyone from a dysfunctional family or in an abusive relationship. Bradshaw helps you get to the heart of your hurt, heal it, and move on. He offers understanding of the dynamics at work in abusive situations, and the understanding helps to heal. He has been there, and his analyses make sense, and they let you know you are NOT insane and you are NOT a victim. His insight is empowering and gives us all hope for the future where we might not have had any. I have given several copies to my friends in crisis and truly believe this honest look inside could benefit everyone.

  5. I think there are a lot of good ideas in this book that have helped me and could help others, but unfortunately it was painful to get through. Bradshaw uses too much jargon and needlessly creates some of his own hokey jargon. The personal examples are all extreme cases, leaving those of us who had difficult childhoods but not Lifetime Drama-material childhoods wondering if maybe we're making too much of things. I found the lists and summaries at the end of each chapter unhelpful and irritating. Bradshaw is repetitive, and goes off on tangents too easily. I also just don't like his tone, which comes off as a bit arrogant. Given all of that, I am glad that I read this book as it gave me a lot to think about and work on. It also helped me understand that some of what I went through as a child was not normal, and had consequences for my emotional development. As I read this book I wanted to keep reading in case there was more to learn, but I kept thinking, "there must be a better written book on this subject."

  1. Cheri Huber has put into a clear, understandable book everything I've been trying to teach my psychotherapy clients. It's one of the books I've been recommending on a regular basis ever since I read it. It includes terrific information and motivational, workable suggestions for letting go of your destructive, self-limiting inner dialogue. Pamela D. Blair, Author The Next Fifty Years: A Guide for Women at Mid-Life And Beyond

  2. Cheri Huber has a small masterpiece in this gem of a book. Unlike many self-help books I've read, Ms. Huber doesn't use it to grandstand, nor does she get bogged down in minutiae. The message is simple, clear, yet incredibly powerful.

  3. This book along with BEING ZEN by Ezra Bayda, FREE YOUR MIND by Anthony Stultz and BIG MIND by Dennis Merzel-represent the best of new teachers of
mindfulness in daily life. They offer us fresh and innovative perspectives on old teachings. You cannot go wrong-they will help you to change your life!

  4. This is another of Cheri Huber's practical books on how to live with Yourself. Free of religious and Diagnostic clutter, it offers a viewpoint which can alleviate the guilt so often encountered in one's search for happiness.

The premise that "nothing needs to be fixed" is almost completely missing in contemporary Psychology because of Medicine and Psychiatry's dogma of "Diagnosis First, Treatment afterwards".

There are many copies of Huber's books in my office lending-library, and my patients have usually found her style and viewpoint refreshing and useful.

  5. I have struggled with a strong Inner Critic for a very long time when I found this book. It is simple and straight forward and has been immensely helpful in breaking the pattern with my Critic. I have read it numerous times and keep returning to it for reminders and support. I highly recommend it to anyone who struggles with low self-esteem. It is not you. There is nothing wrong with you. This book will help you come to realize that Truth. Cheri's explanations are clear, understandable and based on deep knowing. I am grateful for her teachings. I have read Cheri's Fear Book and listened to her CD course Unconditional Self-Acceptance. All were helpful in breaking patterns of conditioning that keep me in bondage. Highly beneficial work!
