- i'm embarassed to say i bought this book but it really helped me get my self-esteem back. I'm sure some of you people feel the same way.
if you do EXACTLY what the book says to do: this will help. self-esteem has gotten a bad reputation lately.
But this book explains how self-esteem is based on accomplishments, not unproved sayings or chants. the best thing to do is to read this book and learn from it. this book helped me tremendously.
- This book is quite incredible. It goes over the details of a low self esteem and really is the perfect self-help book. I got out of a bad relationship not to long ago and finally recognized something about myself. This books has helped me recognize some demons that I have to rid of and it is truly an amazing book. It is very easy to read and understand.
- This is an amazing book. Sherfield covers everything from helping others, to being true to yourself, to making your new positive thinking habits persistent. I found it to be inspiring and truly motivational and this book will find a permanent place on the bookshelf next to my bed (where I keep the books that I go back to again and again and again.)
I hope this book finds its way to many, many people. If I had only known some of these things when I was younger, I could without a doubt have had a much happier and more fulfilling life. But as he says, it is NEVER too late. Thank you, Mr. Sherfield.

5 comments about Healing Anxiety and Depression.
- This book was very informative and useful to me. Everything that is described about these conditions helped me feel that I was on the road to recovery with what my doctor had prescribed, and know with the added knowledge provided by this book I have added supplements, excerise, and a positive attitude to my dealing with my depression.
- WOW! What a book. I have many books, on the above subjects, being a sufferer myself, and feeling like I'm hitting a blank wall trying to fully understand it, but also a book that actively helps you to accept there is more information about diagnosis, PROPER treatment available, and REAL solutions to these debilitating illnesses, not just psychotherapy, or medication. It delves into the psysiological reasons and chemistry of the brain and how SPECT scans can verify diagnoses and help to correctly pinpoint the specific type of illness you may have. I have read many medical books and was 'till now unaware of the physiological markers to look out for, but also that these scans help to pinpoint accurate treatment for your specific type, of which there are 7 main types. It is not for the novice necessarily as medical jargon is used, but is well worth the read and there are addresses and phone numbers for contacting doctors that help diagnose and treat patients. It helps to self diagnose to a point, and makes you feel like there is light at the end of the very long tunnel. About time a book like this has come along. I plan to use it extensively and rid myself of the bain I carry around daily!
- I had knowledge on this subject for years, so most of the material written in this book was mainly old news to me. Most of the material in this book is an overview of the disorders and a lot of pics of brain scans. (Including before and after shots) There is a lot of talk about medication as well and different categories of antidepressants. Honestly there isn't that much extra material that books like "Don't Panic" doesn't cover (although this book isn't as dry as "Don't Panic"). If you are new to all of this, then it's is a decent read. If you been dealing with this for quite a while now, chances are that your doctor has found the right meds for you and that you've been properly diagnosed. You may want a book that goes a little deeper in the topics of "rational vs irrational thoughts", "self-esteem", or "phobias". I gave this book 3 stars only because I was expecting more with all the 5-star reviews and didn't pick-up anything new, but it's a good book if you are new to all of this and want a primer about the road that's ahead of you.
- I enjoy reading the books written by Dr. Amen.
He writes so the lay person can understand and so the professional does not get bored. This book has been very helpful to many people.
- The book reads like a pamphlet advertising the Amen Clinics. At the Amen Clinics this and at the Amen Clinics that, give me a break. This guy can't go half a page without tooting his own horn. You would think that everywhere except the Amen Clinics, the treatment of mental disorders is by witch doctors and alchemists. The books makes a big deal about the use of brain scanning and how this is such a big advantage for their clinic. They shame insurance companies for not reimbursing payment and other doctors for not using the technique, but read closely. In the end, they still the patients are still treated just like anywhere else, symptomatically. One word for this book: lame.

4 comments about Empowering Teens to Build Self-Esteem.
- Teenagers should really be introduced to the basic concepts of this book. The tools and knowledge will truly fortify them with inner power that they can really use for the rest of their lives. Adults who read this will wish they had this book when they were teenagers.
Written by an experienced educator, therapist, counselor who has worked with kids for a good deal of time, this book, with teenage readers in mind, is written with depth and at the same time with much practicality and clarity. It can speak to a teenager reader in a style that is straight and to the point on a very deep, intense topic.
Self-esteem is defined in the simplest clearest way for teenagers (and even for us thick-skinned adults):
"Self esteem is how you feel about yourself."
In the same paragraph as this basic definition is explained low and healthy self-esteem. Again, easily enough for teens to understand:
"You consciously or unconsciously send thoughts and opinions about yourself to yourself. These thoughts can be accurate and helpful or they can be false and damaging. To build self-esteem, you need to consciously think and say positive, honest things to yourself in your mind." Again, to the point with no fancy words for the teenage kids in our lives that we want to help out.
Harrill's book is written in such a way that a teenager can get two basic things out of this book: First, identify habits that degrade one's self-esteem. Then two, find ways to build a healthier self-esteem.
There is a very good set of lists on the behaviors, thoughts and feelings of a person who has low self-esteem. These lists would be quite an eye-opener even for adult, too.
Then there are very practical, helpful affirmations, journaling and visualizations(mind pictures) on building good self-esteem that teenagers(and even adults) can practice for themselves. Even just some of these exercises can surely fortify a teenagers ability to manage their thought processes and nurture themselves in times of teen inner turmoil.
I used this book as part of my background research to create yoga classes for teenagers.

---------------------
- Nearly every teenager could stand to learn more about self-esteem--how it affects their lives and how they can affect it. In "Empowering Teens to Build Self-Esteem," Suzanne E. Harrill (a licensed therapist and counselor as well as teacher and writer) gets her message across in simple, easy terms that aren't condescending and don't talk down to her audience.
The book addresses the basics of self-esteem such as how to recognize low self-esteem, why people have self-esteem problems, what constitutes having good self-esteem, and the principles we need to learn in order to have good self-esteem. It sticks to straightforward concepts with clear explanation.
I think the book does a good job of addressing its intended teen audience. Surprisingly there's actually a fair amount adults can get out of this book, however. Its simple approach can benefit almost anyone, and adults could even benefit from many of the same general relationship tips.
The book does an incredibly good job of balancing two very important issues that often get skewed out of alignment in one direction or the other: the idea that yes, many self-esteem problems have their origin in childhood events and family environments, but that today, now, is the individual's responsibility. While it's often important to understand where these problems come from (for example, if you can recognize that you've unconsciously picked up the behaviors of a parent you may be able to more easily see those behaviors in yourself and alter them), it's just as important to recognize that you're ultimately the person who can help you and make your life better.
The book is written so a teen can read and understand it herself, but it's also written with teachers and counselors in mind; it includes simple evaluations as well as journaling questions. It's clear, straightforward, and well-balanced--if you're looking for some help with self-esteem issues but find the larger or more technical books out there too intimidating, this could be a great solution.
- I thought this book would be more in-depth, but I found it to be a high-level guide, but I suppose it is good for its target audience, teenagers.
- I bought this from the reviews thinking it might be good for my 17 year-old-daughter. It is geared more for a 12 or 13 year-old. Very simplistic.

5 comments about Kitchen Table Wisdom & My Grandfather's Blessing (2 Volume Set).
- Both books display such intelligence and compassion, along with the ability of the writer to be empathetic to the needs of almost any reader. My husband recently passed away and the books were loaned to me. After reading half of one book, I quickly decided that I must have my own copies, so I bought both books, and have not been disappointed.
- Reading this book is an experience in healing. I saw in these stories that my problems are not mine, but that problems are common to each of us. I am not alone in this no matter what the trouble is, someone else has gone through it, and that is the key; they have gone through it, lived beyond it, and are now aware of the blessing of problems. This is a book about forgiveness, conscious surrender, and expansion. It will move you to tears and laughter.
- I READ THIS WHILE TRAVELING AND IT IS A VERY INSPIRING BOOK. I LEARNED A LOT FROM THIS BOOK AND LOOK FORWARD TO STARTING THE NEXT VOLUME IN MY SET CALLED KITCHEN TABLE WISDOM.
- Both Kitchen Table Wisdom and My Grandfather's Blessings were so full of inspiration and powerful messages for anyone dealing with a life threatening disease. I also believe it is essential reading for every doctor--I'm buying a copy of these books for all my doctors to read!
Carol Silverander, Author
With the Help of Our Friends from France: Stabilizing and Living with Advanced Breast Cancer
- Thought provoking read. Enjoy the simple and yet meaningful way Naomi interweaves the life lessons into the stories. Very good gift for ill or sad persons.
Nice book to have by the bedside and just open when seeking comfort or clarity.

5 comments about The Value in the Valley: A Black Woman's Guide Through Life's Dilemmas.
- I saw a lot of me in reading this book. It really helped me to realize somethings about myself and why I do the things that I do. It was great. I would recommend it to anyone who needs clarity on themselves and their lives.
- I am a big fan of motivational and self-help books. I have read many in my lifetime. Mostly good, some so-so. It is important to read a book relevant to what one is going through at that time to get the full scope of things from the book we read I believe. Iyanla's books are one of them and one of my favourite authors. The first book I got from Iyanla's collection was "Yesterday I Cried" and that had helped me through the ditch I was going through at that time. A friend of mine recommended a book of hers "One day My Soul Just Opened Up" which at that time I had already knew about her and went on to search on amazon her other publications and purchased the whole series of her books. Yeh - crazy me! But hey, she's good! I like her approach in the way she writes and conveys her message. It's real. I can relate to her. I have almost the whole collection of her books that she has published and reading them one by one as I go through my life's ups and downs. For the past few months I've been going through many valleys, I started reading "The Value In The Valley" which has given me many insights into my own valleys that I am going through and have gone through and approach life and my valleys in a different light. I have just purchased the Audio CD version of it to listen while I drive or at home. Can't wait to get it and the rest of the motivational goodies I just got from other authors. :) Thumbs up to this book as well as Iyanla's other books. Thank you Iyanla for all the insights your book has given me. :)
- Yes, I already gave it five stars, because I read one of her other books "Tapping The Power Within...." When I was about 14 or 15 years old, I was in a afterschool class, and the instructor gave us each a copy of "Acts of Faith." The title of the book was very powerful to me, and I tried to read it then, but I was not ready. See, thats the thing about most self help books like these, you must be READY to read them. I actually got "Tapping the Power Within..." last month from my counselor, thats when I realized I still had two of her other books. My aunt also bought me one of her books when I was of the age 14, because I was going through a tough time. The book was called "Don't Give it Away." Which I am now in my THIRD YEAR OF COLLEGE... YAYY ME, and I passed the book down to my sister. (Also, I wanted to leave this portion of my message for a poster on here named Tigress "JD": Do not feel stupid for buying a collection of her books. Actually, I had just did the same thing. I am about to buy more of her books). Its quite hard choosing which books to read. I am currently reading the "Acts fo Faith" day by day, and I have finished reading "Tapping The Power Within" Which is helping me a lot. The following books I already have purchased was already shipped to me is "Faith in the Valley," "Living Through the Meantime," (which I started to read, but I was not sure if I was ready, after reading a couple of pages through)"One Day My Soul Just Opened Up (which I am debating with "Living Through the Meantime"), and "Yesterday I Cried." So I have about seven of her books. I am going to purchase more right now. I hope you all remain strong, and I hope the books will help you all a lot. (sorry for all the typos its 3:12am in the morning in NYC and I could not help it, but to get back online and purchase some more books, plus I cannot fall asleep).
- This book is great not only for black women, but for all women. It helps one to understand life better, and to love ones self better.
- This is a Phenomenal book! It's a great book for all women of color to read. Each chapter alerted all of my emotions and thoughts. I am learning everyday how to attack any negative energy surrounding me and follow the gift of intution. Learning to love yourself in the midst of everything.

5 comments about Think & Date Like A Man: (Be the woman who gets the man she wants...and keeps him!).
- This is a poorly written book in urgent need of an editor. As well, I did not find anything in this book about how to think and date like a man. How MEN think (or feel) about some things and how they date, yes, but not how WOMEN are to think and date that makes their thinking and dating like that of men. Maybe it would help if the book had a different title that more accurately represented what the author actually does write about instead of a title that was, perhaps, used to get women to buy the book. Misleading title aside, I think this book might be suited for young girls or newly single women who are re-entering the dating scene. However, I even hesitate to recommend it for them because I think that, overall, what AM writes about is not conducive to a mutually loving, respectful, enlivening, and emotionally mature relationship between adults.
I agree with AM that confidence is key, but one must learn what confidence is and how to have it, as real confidence cannot be faked. There are many authors and books I'd recommend instead of this book. Peace.
- Okay ladies...the relationship equivalent of the Physicians Desk Reference is available. I think every single puzzling thought or degree of frustration had by women throughout time is addressed in this book. That's amazing.
The book is Think and Date Like a Man by nationally known relationship expert and advice columnist, April Masini. The author knows people with uncanny depth and clarity. She proves in this book, and in three others, that she understands-on a level that blows Mars and Venus out of the solar system--the intrinsic differences between and distinct characteristics of men and women.
Funny, direct, honest and packed with accumulated wisdom, you won't want to pass this one on to your friends. You'll want them to buy their own. We've all kicked back with a Cosmo quiz or two in attempts to know ourselves better. Think and Date Like a Man provides the same opportunity in much more detail and then leads the reader down the tailored path necessary to overcome dating and relationship obstacles unique, and not so unique, to the individual reader.
Masini's compilation of scenarios, dilemmas and solutions evolved from years of listening to people experiencing a vast number of human problems. Her masterful ability to dissect issues and create solutions seems to have no limits.
If you are ready, willing and unafraid to look at yourself honestly, this read will serve you better than anything you've seen or read on this subject before. And since life and relationships are ever-unfolding, you'll want to hang onto this book for future reference.
- My best friend and I bought this book on the same day. We were both in bad relationships at the time and this book has changed us both for the long-term and the better. It is self-empowering: It teaches you to love yourself and put yourself FIRST, because that is what men do and it is what matters if you want a man to respect you. I've learned, IF you don't respect yourself how can you expect a man to respect you? When you stop being some guys doormat, you start being the smart, funny, self-empowered, woman men are attracted to. While reading April Masini's book I finally realized that it wasn't men's fault I kept getting hurt, it was MINE.
If your going through a breakup GET THIS BOOK NOW!!!! As soon as you start reading it your whole outlook on life and men will change DRAMATICALLY. I promise!!! LOVE IT!!!
- Some good relating advice in the beginning chapters, but much of the book contained tips on improving your physical appearance. Personally, I don't need help in that area, and was a little disappointed in the book. If you want beauty and fashion advice, there are better books out there for that subject.
- I purchased this book awhile ago, but not from Amazon. I have no idea how this woman could be compared with "Dear Abby". I'm not saying she's a complete idiot, because I'm sure she can't have this much success without knowing how to market herself in some way, but she clearly doesn't know how men think, or atleast not consistently.
One conclusion I've come to, is that only men know how men think, and only women know how women think. Anything more, is merely a guess. You have your good guesses, and bad guesses. April Masini makes MANY bad guesses. It's also generic stuff, for the most part.
In general, I don't like "gurus". They lie, they are marketing experts, and they are incessantly devoted to patting themselves on the back. They also tend to recycle the "facts" of others, to fit their own scenarios.
April Masini, is a guru. I wasn't going to give a review, but I noticed an article by her on what women think about nice guys on Yahoo, and it was generic, like this book. It was also more than partly mistaken, just like this book. I bought it, because I was looking for real answers about how men think with regards to dating. I didn't get any of those answers. If you buy this book, I hope it can provide something for you, because it certainly hasn't for me.
I wish Amazon allowed you to give zero stars in a rating. This is worthy.

5 comments about Secrets of Power Persuasion: Everything You'll Ever Need to Get Anything You'll Ever Want.
- Some of the topics in this book are just common-sense, some have been widely covered elsewhere and at much greater length (e.g. Cialdini's books on Influence), but all in all this is a lovely selection of the principles of persuasion and some case stories are very entertaining to read.
This book is information-rich, but there is still more you may want to learn to enhance your persuasive skills, such as Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Hypnotic Language Patterns.
- Wow. That's all I have to say. I'm halfway through this book, looking to finish it today (lol dreaming to), and I'm absolutely amazed. I have a hobby of studying books on psychology and sociology, and I've came across some good ones and some absolute rip-offs. Some of the bad ones go over some persuasion techniques that are very cliche and you have probably already heard of, and also don't offer much in the realm of content. In this book, however, every page has something to offer, and and it's all unique. What I expected out of this book was either a complete rip-off or that only a small bit of it would be useful, but I was very surprised at how satisfied I was with it. Among all the techniques in there I've found a lot that can be used in every day life, and I can actually imagine them working. It explains a lot about persuasion techniques you've came across but didn't recognize as such, and opens your eyes to an entirely new world of persuasion altogether. I'm actually planning on reading this book two or three times, and I think after that I might actually be a better persuader than I was before I bought it. All in all, this book is very professional and offers tons and tons of content. The authors life, which he uses ocassionally for examples in his techniques, shows how amazingly successful he is without it seeming like he's bragging. He has rented yaghts, probably went to every country in the world, has hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars, climbs mountains, crazy. Anyway, if you're into persusasion I highly recommend this book. You will not be disappointed.
- You can't go wrong with ANY of his book. Don't look further, don't settle for less.
Unbelievable thing has happened to me -- I followed the advise in the book and received the promotion I wanted. Funny thing is that Roger warned that this method DOES work, and I didn't think it would work, but decided to give it a try.
Have YOU ever dreamt of getting a promotion shortly after starting a new job ??? I haven't, but it happened to me.
Thank you Mr. Dawson!!!!!!!
- I've liked Dawson for a long time. I've read and studied his books and tapes on negotiation for years. While not all of his methods work with my personality, his advice has been of real value to me.
I have the audio version of this book. It's very good. The information is valuable and I expect I'll listen to it frequently. You always pick up something new in his material.
Persuasion is necessary in almost all of life, especially sales and business. This book will go a long way in helping you to become better at persuading people to your way of thinking.
Highly recommended.
- I wasn't expecting much because I didn't seek out this
book... it just sort of appeared in my life.
I've read many books about persuasion and persuasive writing
and this is a good one. Dawson's style is easygoing and
straightforward.
of course if you are more persuaded by individuals with
academic credentials you'll want to read Hogan and Cialdini,
both of whom proudly display their PHDs.
Dawson, the guy is a salesman who made good and went into
speaking. No time for a PHD. Working class.
Part 3 focuses on charisma and how to develop it. Why
ignore that people buy from people they like? You can
practice all the sly persuasion wordplay you want and get
very Machiavellian, but in truth just working on
your charisma is a short-cut to getting what you want.
Excellent book. Not mysterious or high-falutin' or
"academically verified" at all. Not NLP. Not Hypnotic
selling. This book makes sense. I like it.
